China to Create New Department to Bolster Growth in Private Sector

  • China's top economic planner is creating a new department to help private businesses, the latest step by the government to revive confidence in the sector and bolster growth.
  • The private economy development bureau will be responsible for tracking and analysing the state of the industry, along with coordinating and drafting policies to promote its growth.
  • Beijing unveiled a drip-feed of policies in recent months intended to revitalise private companies and attract foreign investment, with President Xi Jinping vowing to ease market access and create opportunities for global cooperation.
  • The new bureau will also regularly talk to companies and help them resolve their main problems, as well as support their attempts to improve international competitiveness.

CCI Approves Vistara-Air India Merger

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) gave the green light to the merger of Tata SIA Airlines, which operates under the Vistara brand, with Air India, a subsidiary of Tata Sons Pvt. Ltd. This landmark merger also involves Singapore Airlines (SIA) and entails the acquisition of shares in the merged entity, Air India, subject to certain voluntary commitments. TSAL (Tata SIA Airlines Limited) is a joint venture between the Tata Group and the Singapore Airlines with the former holding 51% and the latter 49%.
  • With the CCI's approval, the merger between Tata SIA Airlines (Vistara) and Air India is set to redefine the Indian aviation industry. This strategic alliance between two renowned giants in the business, Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, promises to reshape the aviation landscape, offering passengers enhanced services, expanded routes, and improved travel experiences.

Indian Bank Partners with OneCard to Launch Mobile-first Co-branded Credit Cards

  • Indian Bank, a public sector bank in India, announced its partnership with OneCard, aimed at introducing state-of-the-art, mobile-first, contactless, metal co-branded credit cards. This partnership will empower users with full digital control over their credit card interactions — ranging from real-time transactions tracking, spends management, EMI conversion, reward redemption, repayments, monthly budget planning to credit limit adjustments and seamless payments, all in-app.
  • For the unversed, OneCard is a mobile-first metal credit card launched and managed by FPL Technologies in partnership with issuer banks. FPL Technologies was founded by Anurag Sinha, Rupesh Kumar, and Vibhav Hathi, who come from banking backgrounds with deep expertise in payments, credit and building and scaling digital businesses. FPL is on a mission to re-imagine credit and payments from first principles.

State Bank of India Announces Introduction of UPI Interoperability on CBDC

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) implemented UPI interoperability in its digital rupee, called Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
  • With this move, the bank aims to deliver unprecedented convenience and accessibility to its customers.
  • This cutting-edge feature, accessible through the 'eRupee by SBI' application will empower SBI CBDC users to effortlessly scan any merchant UPI QR code for swift and secure transactions.
  • SBI was among the first few banks to participate in the RBI's retail digital e-rupee project in December 2022.
  • The seamless integration of CBDC with UPI marks a significant leap for the bank, enhancing the acceptance and utilization of digital currencies in everyday transactions.

UAE astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi and Three Space Station Fliers Return to Earth

  • UAE astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, his crewmates from NASA, Stephen Bowen and Woody Hoburg, and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev returned to Earth in the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.
  • The splashdown happened in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida. Al Neyadi's mission became the longest in Arab history, as Crew-6 spent 186 days in space.
  • On March 2, 2023 Crew-6 was launched by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Crew-6 orbited the Earth 2,976 times and travelled 78.9 million miles. Throughout their mission, the Crew-6 astronauts welcomed seven visiting vehicles. They also carried out three spacewalks. Al Neyadi joined Bowen for a third excursion to retrieve a failed antenna package and do other maintenance.

Indian Men's Hockey Team Beat Pakistan to Win Inaugural Men's Hockey 5s Asia Cup

  • In Hockey, India beat Pakistan in penalty shootout in the final and won the inaugural Men's Hockey 5s Asia Cup 2023 in Salalah, Oman. The win also served as Asia's qualifying tournament for the FIH Men's Hockey5s World Cup Oman 2024. Subsequently, India qualified for the FIH Men's Hockey5s World Cup Oman 2024.
  • India beat arch-rivals Pakistan 2-0 in a shootout after both teams were locked at 4-4 in regulation time.

Ravindra Jadeja Becomes India's Leading Wicket-taker in Asia Cup ODIs

  • Star Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja equalled Irfan Pathan's wicket tally and become the joint-most successful Indian bowler in Asia Cup ODIs during the group match against Nepal in Pallekele. Both Jadeja and Pathan have taken 22 wickets in Asia Cup One-Day Internationals, demonstrating their exceptional bowling abilities on the international stage.

  • Oscar-winning film 'Slumdog Millionaire' actor Madhurr Mittal is portraying the role of the legendary Sri Lankan spinner in his biopic.
  • Written and directed by MS Sripathy, the film will be released in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu.
  • Member of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, Muralitharan is widely regarded as one of the greatest bowlers in the history of the sport and is the only bowler to take 800 Test wickets and 530+ ODI wickets. He is also the highest wicket-taker in both Test and ODI formats and averages over six wickets per Test match.

J-K LG Inaugurates 'Community Radio' at Jammu University

  • Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated a community radio, a first-of-its-kind in the Union Territory, at the University of Jammu on its foundation day.
  • The radio shall act as a medium to promote, propagate and disseminate the polyvocal and polylingual voices of the various stakeholders of the university and act as a site of exchange for various ideas culminating in motivating people to participate in the national endeavour for integrated development of the country.

Assam Govt. Forms Committee to Draft Anti-polygamy Law

  • The Assam government constituted a three-member committee to draft the proposed anti-polygamy law.
  • It has been constituted with Advocate General, Legal Remembrancer and Director General of Police.
  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government had earlier constituted a committee to examine the "legislative competence of the state legislature" to enact a law to end polygamy.
  • The government had sought the views of the public on the proposed anti-polygamy law. Altogether 149 individuals and organisations responded and of them, 146 supported it while the remaining three objected to it.

IPS Officer Yogesh Bahadur Khurania is Head of BSF's Western Command

  • Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, a 1990-batch Indian Police Service officer of Odisha, assumed charge as the Special Director-General of the Border Security Force's (BSF), Western Command, in Chandigarh. He is responsible for the management of the entire border with Pakistan as well as the administration and deployment of BSF manpower and assets in the Western Sector.
  • Prior to this, he was serving as Special Director-General (Operations) at the BSF Headquarters in New Delhi. He took over from P. V. Rama Sastry, who has been posted to force's headquarters in his place.

N. Valarmathi, Voice Behind ISRO Launch Countdowns, Passes Away

  • N. Valarmathi who was the voice behind the countdowns for various launches of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), including the Chandrayaan-3 mission, passed away at the age of 64.
  • She was responsible for the countdowns for numerous launches by the space agency at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. Valarmathi was a project director for the remote sensing RISAT-1 project in 2012.
  • Valarmathi received the Tamil Nadu government's Abdul Kalam award in 2015, shortly after her role as director in the RISAT-1 project.

Teachers' Day (India)

  • Teachers' Day in India is celebrated every year on September 5 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was a former President of India, scholar, philosopher and Bharat Ratna recipient.
  • The first Teachers' Day in India was marked on September 5, 1962, which was his 77th birthday.
  • The theme for Teacher's Day 2023 is 'Teachers at the heart of education recovery'.

International Day of Charity

  • International Day of Charity is celebrated every year on September 5. The day was established by the United Nations with an intention to promote and encourage charity and philanthropy across the globe. It also commemorates the death anniversary of Mother Teresa – a Noble Prize winner for her heroic acts of kindness, charity, and struggle against poverty.
  • The International Day of Charity was conceived as a Hungarian civil society initiative supported by the Hungarian Parliament and Government in 2011, to enhance visibility, organize special events, and in this way to increase solidarity, social responsibility and public support for charity.
  • September 5 was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.
  • On December 17, 2012, in response to a proposal by Hungary, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution by consensus to designate September 5 as the International Day of Charity.
  • The theme for International Day of Charity 2023 is 'Global Solidarity to End Poverty'.

P. V. Satyanarayana Receives Dr. MS Swaminathan Award

  • Dr. P. V. Satyanarayana, Principal Scientist, Agricultural Research Station, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), Ragolu, was awarded the prestigious 8th Dr. MS Swaminathan Award for his contributions in the field of agriculture during the period 2021-2022. The biennial Dr. MS Swaminathan Award, constituted by the Retired Indian Council of Agricultural Research Employees Association (RICAREA) and Nuziveedu Seeds Limited (NSL), includes a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh and a gold medal, was presented to Dr. Satyanarayana at an event at Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR), Hyderabad.
  • Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director General (DG), ICAR and Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) gave away the award in the presence of senior scientists. Some of the notable achievements of Dr. Satyanarayana include the national award as Team Leader for the Best Golden Jubilee AICIP Centre Award in 2015, the Best Scientist Award by the Seedman Association in 2021.

Peregrine Falcon Image Wins Bird Photo Award

  • Photographer Jack Zhi's dramatic picture of a female peregrine falcon protecting her young, won this year's (2023) Bird Photographer of the Year award.
  • The picture was taken in California and beat more than 20,000 entries to claim the prize.
  • The Young Bird Photographer of the Year award went to German photographer Anton Trexler for his atmospheric picture of a blackbird silhouetted against the moon.

Air pollution is basically one of the top 5 risks causing chronic diseases, according to the World Health Organisation.

IIT Madras Includes 'International Immersion Learning' to its MBA Programme

  • The Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) included an 'International Immersion Learning' component to its executive MBA programme for working professionals.
  • The core focus of the International Immersion Learning programme is on Global Leadership and Cultural Intelligence. Under this initiative, several students from the '23 and '24 batches of the executive MBA programme attended a 9-day immersion programme at IÉSEG School of Management in two countries and three locations – Brussels in Belgium and Paris, Lille in France.

IIM-Calcutta Director Uttam Kumar Sarkar Resigns

  • The Director of the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C), Uttam Kumar Sarkar, is learnt to have resigned over differences with the Board chairperson, making him the second institute head in two years to leave before completing a five-year term.
  • Sarkar was appointed director on August 18, 2021, and still had almost three years left of his term.
  • Incidentally, Sarkar's predecessor, Anju Seth, who was the first woman director of IIM-C, quit in March 2021. She had more than a year left of her term.

Kathmandu-Kalinga Literary Festival 2023

  • The three day long Kathmandu-Kalinga Literary Festival successfully came to an end in Lalitpur, Nepal. Minister for Foreign Affairs NP Saud of Nepal had inaugurated the festival. This event fulfilled its role in the exchange of culture in the South Asia promoting literary and cultural activities. Llitterateur from India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka exhibited in the festival. The festival showcased literature, music, dance, poetry and other art forms.
  • Professor Avadhesh Pradhan, actress and writer Divya Dutta, Prof Madhav Prasad Pokharel and actress Manisha Koirala's were awarded 'Yashaswi Sahitya Samman'. Similarly, those awarded with the 'Yashaswi Book Prize' initiated from this year include writer Bibek Ojha towards fiction for his book 'Aithan', Dr Nawaraj KC towards creative non-fiction for his book 'Sunyako Mulya', Renuka GC towards story for her book 'Sanesh', Dr Mahendra Malla towards poetry for the anthology of poems entitled 'Bhasako Bakpatra', Govinda Giri Prerana towards biography for the biography 'Sushree Parijaat' and Anuradha towards children's literature for her book 'Chhamchhako Chhamchhami'.

Karnataka High Court Declares 2019 Election of JD (S) MP Prajwal Revanna as Null and Void

  • The High Court of Karnataka declared null and void the 2019 election of Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna on grounds of corruption.
  • Revanna had successfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Hassan constituency of Karnataka and became the lone face of Janata Dal (Secular) MP in the lower house.
  • The Single-Judge Bench of Justice K. Natarajan found Prajwal guilty of corrupt practices on several counts such as wrong disclosure of value of properties, non-disclosure of material facts, evading taxes, exorbitant expenditures than the limit prescribed by the Election Commission of India and proxy voting.
  • The High Court also found fault with the acceptance of nomination by the Returning Officer, calling it illegal and improper.
