Reliance Signs MoU with Brookfield for Renewable Power Equipment Manufacturing in Australia

  • Reliance Industries and Brookfield Asset Management signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities to manufacture renewable energy and decarbonisation equipment in Australia.
  • The MoU aims to accelerate and de-risk Australia's energy transition by enabling it to locally produce clean energy equipment such as photovoltaic modules, long-duration battery storage, and components for wind energy.
  • According to the initial agreement, Brookfield will collaborate with Reliance to explore avenues for direct capital investment and the development of skills, knowledge, and expertise in the renewable energy sector of Australia. This collaboration aims to facilitate the nation's journey towards a net-zero future.
  • The MoU with Reliance forms a significant part of Brookfield's efforts to bring global manufacturing technology and expertise to Australia.

Franklin AMC Appoints Debt Head, Explores to Foray into Alternatives Business

  • Franklin Templeton appointed Rahul Goswami as the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) & Managing Director (MD) – India AMC Fixed Income. Rahul will oversee the fixed income functions of the locally managed and distributed debt schemes of Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund. Prior to joining Franklin Templeton, Rahul was the CIO of fixed income at ICICI Prudential Asset Management.
  • Rahul Goswami has over 24 years' experience managing fixed income funds investing in government securities, corporate bonds, besides monitoring key economic developments.
  • Santosh Kamath, current Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of India AMC Fixed Income funds, assumed a new role as the President and CIO of Franklin Templeton Alternative Investments India Pvt. Ltd (Alternatives). The India Alternatives business led by Santosh will initially focus on alternative credit, covering listed and unlisted corporate bonds and structured credit.

Microsoft Appoints Puneet Chandok to Lead India Operations

  • Microsoft appointed Puneet Chandok as the new Corporate Vice President of Microsoft India and South Asia, effective from September 1, 2023. He will take over operational responsibilities from Anant Maheshwari and will lead the integration of Microsoft's businesses across South Asia, including countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Puneet aims to strengthen Microsoft's presence in the region and focus on key industries through a customer-centric approach, with generative AI as a core technology.
  • This appointment came during a period of significant market expansion for Microsoft, especially in cloud technology and digital innovation.
  • Puneet joined Microsoft after leading the India and South Asia business for AWS, where he worked closely with enterprises, digital businesses, start-ups, and SMBs to drive innovation and agility. Before that, he held senior roles at McKinsey and IBM.

Airtel Launches Self-service Digital Marketing Product Airtel IQ Reach

  • Airtel launched an enterprise communications platform - Airtel IQ Reach - which will enable brands/ companies to drive targeted customer engagements through personalised communications. Airtel IQ Reach will protect users from spam by seeking their consent before sending them messages. The platform is already live for communications via WhatsApp, with SMS and voice to be added in the future.
  • Calling it the world's first network-embedded Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS), Airtel said that the platform will target businesses with a marketing spend between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 1,00,000 per month. It will let small businesses access a portal for designing customised messages, uploading or selecting their target audiences, scheduling their messages and, tracking campaign effectiveness.

Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes Highest Goal Scorer with Headers in Football History

  • Cristiano Ronaldo became the highest goal scorer through headers when he scored the second goal for Al Nassr against US Monastir in a King Salman Club Cup game at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
  • Ronaldo scored his 145th headed goal. He broke the record of Gerd Muller who had 144 goals through headers.
  • The top four to score the most headers in football history are Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) – 145, Gerd Muller (Germany) – 144, Carlos Santillana (Spain) – 125 and Pele (Brazil) – 124.

World University Games: Double Delight for Shooter Sift Kaur Samra

  • Sift Kaur Samra edged out Ashi Chouksey and won the gold medal in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions at the World University Games.
  • Sift scored 462.9 points, while Ashi finished with 461.6 as India grabbed the top two positions. Sift, Ashi and Manini Kaushik also won gold in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions team event. The trio scored 3,527 points to take the top spot.

Government Launches Digital Crop Survey

  • The Centre launched digital Crop Survey (DCS) in 12 states on a pilot basis from kharif (summer-sown) season of this year for better sowing data collection.
  • DCS reference application has been developed as an open source, open standard and inter operable public good.
  • Further, geo-referenced cadastral maps with Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) Technologies are used to ensure the farmland position.
  • The 12 states selected for pilot on DCS are Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Odisha, Assam and Telangana.
  • The states were selected based on the preparedness in respect of pre-requisite criteria for DCS, i.e. geo-referencing of village map and digitised Record of Right (RoR) with ownership extent.
  • The project aims to create a single and verified source of truth about the crop sown data which is useful for accurate crop area estimation and development of various farmers centric solutions.

India, Moldova Agree to Sign MoU for Cooperation in Agriculture

  • India and eastern European country Moldova agreed to explore signing of an MoU for cooperation in the agriculture sector.
  • A meeting between Shobha Karandlaje, Minister of State for Agriculture, and Vladimir Bolea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture & Food Industries of Moldova, was held.
  • Both Ministers emphasized the potential for increasing bilateral trade in agricultural commodities and for strengthening of bilateral agricultural cooperation through exchange of knowledge and technology.

Indian Army Implements Common Uniform for Brigadier and above Ranks

  • The Indian Army put in force a common uniform for the rank of Brigadier and above like Major General, Lieutenant-General and General, irrespective of an officer's parent cadre and appointment. The step has been implemented to maintain uniformity all across the Indian Army. There will be no change in the uniform worn by Colonels and officers below that rank.
  • The decision was taken after a discussion with all stakeholders during the Army Commanders Conference.

Rear Admiral Ajay D. Theophilus Takes over as Flag Officer Commanding Goa Area

  • Rear Admiral Ajay D. Theophilus took over as the Flag Officer Commanding Goa Area from Rear Admiral Vikram Menon at a ceremonial parade held at the INS Hansa at Vasco in South Goa.
  • Prior to taking over the new charge, Rear Admiral Theophilus served as deputy commandant of the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala (in Kerala).
  • Rear Admiral Theophilus joined the Indian Navy in 1987 and was commissioned into the executive branch on July 1, 1991. He was selected for the pilot's course in June 1992, and upon completion of the course, he joined the fighter stream of naval aviation.

  • Renowned art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai has passed away at the age of 57.
  • The art director has also won National Film Award for Best Art Direction four times for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar (1999), Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (2000), Lagaan (2002) and Devdas (2003).
  • The four-time National Award winner for art direction also created sets for Slumdog Millionaire and Kaun Banega Crorepati. Some of the most notable Bollywood movies that he worked for were Jodhaa Akbar, Munnabhai M.B.B.S. and Lage Raho Munna Bhai.

Rajya Sabha Passes Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill

  • The Rajya Sabha passed the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2023, to amend the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002.
  • The Lok Sabha had earlier passed the amendment Bill.
  • The Bill will improve governance, reform the electoral process, strengthen the monitoring mechanism, improve the Board's composition, and enhance transparency and accountability in Multi-State Cooperative Societies.
  • The Bill allows state cooperative societies to merge into an existing multi-state cooperative society.
  • The Bill establishes the Cooperative Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Development Fund for the revival of sick multi-state cooperative societies. As per the Bill, the central government will appoint one or more Cooperative Ombudsman with territorial jurisdiction.

NHPC and ALIMCO Sign MoU for Providing Aids and Assistive Devices to Divyangjans

  • NHPC Limited and Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding, under which NHPC will provide CSR support for distribution of aids and assistive devices to around 1,000 Divyangjans (Persons with Disabilities) in the vicinity of NHPC Projects located in North and North Eastern states.
  • The MoU was signed at NHPC Corporate Office, Faridabad under the CSR initiative of NHPC. The MoU was signed by Group Deputy General Manager (HR), CSR & SD, NHPC and General Manager - Marketing, ALIMCO in the presence of Shri Uttam Lal, Director (Personnel), NHPC; Executive Director (CSR & SD), NHPC, and other senior officers from NHPC CSR&SD Division and ALIMCO.

  • London-based Indian-origin author Chetna Maroo's debut novel 'Western Lane' is among 13 books to make the cut for the 2023 Booker Prize long list.
  • Kenya-born Maroo's novel, set within the context of the British Gujarati milieu, has been praised by the Booker judges for its use of the sport of squash as a metaphor for complex human emotions. It revolves around the story of an 11-year-old girl named Gopi and her bonds with her family.

Delhi High Court Forms Committee to Examine Whether All Bar Association Elections in Capital can be Held in One Day

  • The Delhi High Court constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva to explore the possibility of holding elections for all the bar associations in Delhi on the same day.
  • A Division Bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Narula passed the order.
  • The Court asked the committee to examine if identity cards and radio frequency tags/stickers for vehicles of lawyers can also be prepared. Further, the committee has been asked to submit its report in four weeks' time.
  • The Delhi High Court's Justices Jasmeet Singh and Manoj Jain, along with Bar Council of Delhi Chairman KK Manan, Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) President Mohit Mathur and Chairman of the Coordination Committee of All District Bar Associations of Delhi are other members of the committee.
  • The Court passed the order on a plea by Advocate Nitin Kumar, who had raised concern that there was no uniformity in the tenure of leadership of office bearers in different bar associations, as bar elections are presently held on different dates.
