  • He officially filed his candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.

ISRO Successfully Places Singapore's DS-SAR, 6 other Satellites into Intended Orbit

  • ISRO successfully launched its proven PSLV rocket carrying seven Singaporean satellites from Satish Dhawan Space Centre and placed them into intended orbits.
  • Around 23 minutes after lift-off, the primary satellite got separated and it was followed by six other co-passenger satellites, which were deployed into the intended orbits sequentially.
  • This ISRO mission, which came after the much-awaited Chandrayaan-3 launch earlier this month, was undertaken by its commercial arm NewSpace India Limited (NSIL).

Indian, Japanese Scientists Discover 600-Million-Year-Old Ocean in Himalayas

  • High up in the Himalayas, scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Niigata University, Japan, discovered droplets of water trapped in mineral deposits that were likely left behind from an ancient ocean which existed around 600 million years ago.
  • Analysis of the deposits, which had both calcium and magnesium carbonates, also allowed the team to provide a possible explanation for events that might have led to a major oxygenation event in Earth's history.

BSNL's Shivendra Nath Set to be Next CMD of EPIL

  • Shivendra Nath was appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Engineering Projects (India) Ltd., a public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.
  • Currently, Nath is serving as the senior general manager in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and has been recommended for the CMD position by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) panel.
  • In his new role, Nath will be the Chief Executive of the company working under the board and directors. He will be responsible for the smooth functioning of the company in order to achieve the organisational objectives.

India and ADB Signs $200 mn Loan Deal to Enhance Urban Services in Rajasthan

  • The Central Government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) inked a $200 million loan agreement to bolster the ongoing Rajasthan Secondary Towns Development Sector Project. The project's objective is to expand water supply and sanitation systems, while also enhancing urban resilience and promoting heritage conservation in selected towns.
  • The loan agreement was signed by Vumlunmang Vualnam, Additional Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, on behalf of the Government of India, and Takeo Konishi, the country director of ADB's India Resident Mission, representing ADB.

Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited, GAIL Sign Interconnection Agreement

  • Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) and GAIL India signed an interconnection agreement to connect the North East Gas Grid (NEGG) of IGGL with the Barauni Guwahati Pipeline (BGPL) of GAIL.
  • The agreement was signed by IGGL chief executive officer Ajit Kumar Thakur and GAIL's zonal chief general manager R. Choudhury.
  • The interconnection agreement will facilitate connection of the NEGG with the BGPL at three locations - Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and Baihata and Panikhaiti in Assam.
  • The interconnection agreement will pave the way for making the NEGG a part of the National Gas Grid.

World Aquatics Championships 2023 Concludes

  • The 2023 World Aquatics Championships took place in Fukuoka, Japan from 14 to 30 July.
  • China topped the medal table with 40 medals. Australia was second place with 30 medals, followed by the United States with 44 medals. The US was ranked third because Australia won 15 gold medals, while the UD won 7 gold medals. The US was followed by Japan, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Great Britain and Canada, respectively.

Indian Women's Team Wins 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation Tournament

  • The Indian women's hockey team reigned supreme in the 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation International tournament, beating hosts Spain 3-0 in a one-sided contest in Barcelona. Goals from Vandana Katariya (22'), Monika (48'), and Udita (58') helped the Indian women's team stand tall in the end and remain unbeaten in the tournament.

Formula 1: Max Verstappen Secures Eighth Straight Win

  • Formula One leader Max Verstappen raced from sixth on the grid to a crushing eighth win in a row at the Belgian Grand Prix with Sergio Perez a distant second to seal the Belgian Grand Prix one-two for rampant Red Bull. Red Bull's 13th consecutive victory made the team the first in the sport's 73-year history to win the opening 12 races of a season, one more than McLaren managed in 1988 with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

Maharashtra Seeks World Bank's Assistance for Upgrading Infrastructure and Capacity Building

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has sought the World Bank's assistance for upgrading infrastructure and capacity building in the state.
  • Speaking at a meeting with the World Bank's executive directors here on Sunday, Mr Shinde said the World Bank was not just a fund-giving body, but a source of knowledge for developing countries.
  • The partnership with the World Bank will help improve the standard of living of people in Maharashtra which has the best skilled workforce and modern infrastructure facilities.

Prof Ganesan Kannabiran New NAAC Director

  • The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) appointed educationist Prof Ganesan Kannabiran as its new director. Prof Kannabiran a senior professor of Information Systems at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli, and has served in the education sector for over 30 years. He was also the Dean of Research and Consultancy, and Director-in-Charge of NIT Trichy and NIT Puducherry.
  • He was also the founding director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Andhra Pradesh, from 2018 to 2023. During this time, he made significant contributions towards the implementation of the National Education Policy at the institute, and promoted the adoption of neighbouring villages.

Tenth Meeting of Subcommittee on Military Cooperation between India, Malaysia Held in Delhi

  • The 10th meeting of the subcommittee on military cooperation between India and Malaysia was held in Delhi.
  • The existing defence cooperation between the two countries was reviewed during the meeting and wide-ranging discussions were held on issues of mutual interest.
  • The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), Ministry of Defence, Amitabh Prasad, while the Malaysian side was headed by Assistant Chief of Staff, Defence Operations and Training Division Maj Gen Dato' Khairul Anuar bin Abd Aziz.
  • Both the co-chairs also deliberated on the possible outcomes for the 12th Malaysia-India Defence Cooperation Committee (MIDCOM) meeting which will be held at the level of Defence Secretary in India in September.

Indian Navy Ends 'Colonial Practice' of Carrying Batons by Personnel

  • The Indian Navy discontinued the practice of carrying barons by its senior officers with immediate effect. This decision to stop the custom that has been followed since British rule was a part of the Navy's effort to shed colonial-era influences at different levels of the force.
  • Now, the Navy decided to place a ceremonial baton in the office of the Head of the Organisation of every unit. A ceremonial handing over of the baton may be undertaken within the office, as a part of Change of Command only.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked the defence forces to shed their colonial practices as the country entered Amrit Kall having been independent for over 75 years.

US Announces Taiwan Weapons Package Worth up to $345mn

  • The United States (US) unveiled a Taiwan weapons aid package worth up to $345 million, a move likely to anger China even as the Biden administration declined to publicly provide details on the arms in the package.
  • The Congress authorised up to $1 billion worth of Presidential Drawdown Authority weapons aid for Taiwan, which strongly rejects Chinese sovereignty claims, in the 2023 budget. Beijing has repeatedly demanded the United States, Taiwan's most important arms supplier, to halt the sale of weapons to the island.

World Ranger Day

  • World Ranger Day, celebrated on July 31, serves as a special occasion to pay tribute and show gratitude to the courageous men and women who devote their lives to safeguarding wildlife and preserving our precious natural resources.
  • The origins of World Ranger Day can be traced back to the International Ranger Federation (IRF), an organisation established in 1992 to promote and support the work of park rangers worldwide. The day was first observed in 2007 in memory of eight rangers who tragically lost their lives while on duty in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then, World Ranger Day has become an internationally recognised occasion to celebrate rangers' contributions and raise awareness about the challenges they face in their line of duty.
  • The theme of World Ranger Day 2023 is '30 by 30', building on the momentum from the 2022 United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15).

Ratan Tata to get Maharashtra Govt's First 'Udyog Ratna' Award

  • The Maharashtra government decided to honour Ratan Tata, the Chairman emeritus of the Tata group, with the first esteemed Maharashtra Udyog Ratna Award. This significant recognition was announced by the state Industries Minister, Uday Samant, during a session at the State Legislative Assembly.
  • Following the tradition of the Maharashtra Bhushan award, which is the highest state honour presented to distinguished individuals, the Maharashtra government introduced the prestigious Udyog Ratna Award starting this year (2023). Tata will be the inaugural recipient of this award.

Punjab Tops Beneficiary List under Atmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana

  • Punjab is the leading beneficiary among states (as in July 2023) under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana (ABRY), a scheme initiated by the Centre during the pandemic to give a fillip to formal employment.
  • According to data, one in every five active Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) subscribers in the state joined the workforce.
  • According to Rameshwar Teli, minister of state, labour and employment, 20.1 per cent of formal workers in Punjab had benefited from the central scheme until July 18, 2023.
  • They were followed by beneficiaries in Himachal Pradesh (19.1 per cent), Rajasthan (18.9 per cent), Gujarat (15.4 per cent), and Madhya Pradesh (14.2 per cent).
  • However, Maharashtra (978,308), Tamil Nadu (817,315), Gujarat (643,573), and Karnataka (486,278) topped the list in terms of total number of beneficiaries under the scheme.

Kerala to Soon Launch its Overseas Emigrants with Shubhayatra Scheme

  • Giving a fresh impetus to the international migration from Kerala post COVID-19, the State government will soon roll out a unique scheme to provide financial support to first-time overseas emigrants from Kerala. Titled 'Shubhayatra', the project envisages creating a positive and productive migration ecosystem by providing a financial assistance of up to Rs. 2 lakh with a tax holiday for six months and attractive interest subvention to meet the incidental expense of eligible candidates.

Bhutan Announces Successful Elimination of Rubella

  • Bhutan announced the successful elimination of rubella. The World Health Organisation recognised Bhutan's efforts to tackle this highly contagious and potentially devastating disease.
  • In the past 20 years, Bhutan's health workers have worked tirelessly and fought against rubella, also known as German Measles. This infectious disease poses a threat to those infected and also causes severe complications for pregnant women, resulting in irreversible birth defects in newborns. However, Bhutan's efforts in vaccination promotion and creating awareness have resulted in commendable success.

CBSE Signs 15 MOUs to Promote Skill Education, Assessment and Teacher Training

  • With a vision to promote Skill Education, Assessment, and capacity building of teachers, CBSE signed 15 MoUs with different Institutes. The NEP emphasises stronger collaboration between academia and industry. The curriculum needs to be aligned with industry requirements, making provision for internships and apprenticeships for students to promote industry exposure.
  • It is equally important to update the capacity of teachers for desired outcomes. CBSE, through these initiatives, has thus entered into strategic partnerships for skill development, education, and training.
  • In order to ensure that students acquire a diverse set of expertise and ensure the availability of quality infrastructure along with exposure to students to emerging technologies, 12 MOUs have been signed with Sector Skill Providers such as Atal Innovation Mission, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Apparel Made-ups and Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council, Automotive Sector Skill Council, Sports, Physical Education, Fitness and Leisure Skills Council, Logistics Sector Skill Council, Furniture and Fittings Sector Skill Council, Life Sciences Sector Skill Council Textiles Sector Skill Council, Healthcare Sector Skill Council.

To have a Say in Key IIM Appointments, Centre Set to Appoint President as Visitor

  • In a move that could potentially curb the autonomy granted to 20 Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) in 2017, the Centre introduced an amendment to the IIM Act in the parliament, proposing to make the President the Visitor of all B-schools.
  • The amendment, if comes into effect, will strip the IIM Board of the power to select and appoint chairpersons and directors to the institutes. Under the amendments, the Visitor will have the power to appoint the Chairperson to the Board of Governors of the institute, and nominate an individual to the search-cum-selection committee for the positions of Director, giving the government a say in these crucial calls.
  • The Visitor will also have the power to appoint the Chairperson to the Coordination Forum of the institute, as per the Bill.
  • The Visitor would also be empowered to set up an inquiry against the institute in case of suspected irregularities, and remove the institute's director, besides allowing the Central Government to constitute an interim Board in case of suspension or dissolution of the said Board of Governors.
  • This is the second attempt by the union government at curbing the autonomy granted to the 20 premier Business-schools.

Supreme Court Issues Notice on RBI Appeal against Lifting of Loan Restrictions on Tiruvalla East Co-operative Bank

  • The Supreme Court issued a notice in response to an appeal filed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) against the Kerala High Court's order that lifted the loan restrictions imposed by the RBI on Thiruvalla East Co-operative Bank Ltd. The notice was issued by a division bench consisting of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, with the Attorney General for India, R. Venkataramani, representing the RBI.
  • The case stems from an inspection conducted by the RBI before imposing the prohibitory order on the Cooperative Bank, accompanied by an inspection report that highlighted certain deficiencies in banking practices, particularly in some loan advance schemes that were susceptible to misuse.
  • The Kerala High Court, in its ruling, upheld the decision of a single bench that lifted the restriction placed on the Co-operative Bank by the RBI, citing that the bank was not given a fair opportunity to present its side before the prohibition was imposed.

Centre Notifies Appointment of Two Advocates, One judicial Officer as Himachal High Court Judges

  • The Centre notified the appointment of advocates Ranjan Sharma and Bipin Chander Negi, and judicial officer Rakesh Kainthla as judges of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
  • The Himachal Pradesh High Court is currently functioning with only nine judges against a sanctioned strength of 17 judges.
  • The Supreme Court Collegium led by CJI D. Y. Chandrachud had recommended their names for elevation as judges of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
