Indo-Canadian Anita Anand Named Treasury Board President in Trudeau Cabinet Reshuffle

  • In the latest cabinet reshuffle, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Anita Anand, of Indian origin, to the position of Treasury Board president. She has been promoted from her previous role as the Defence Minister in the Canadian government.
  • Anita Anand was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Oakville in 2019. She has previously served as Minister of National Defence and as Minister of Public Services and Procurement. The Indian-origin leader has also worked as a scholar, lawyer, and researcher. She has been a legal academic, including as a Professor of Law at the University of Toronto.

Maruti, Tata, HP, Coca-Cola and 35 other Firms to Launch 'RECEIC' a Global, Industry-led Coalition

  • The fourth and final meeting of the G20 Atmosphere & Native weather Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) meeting took place in Chennai. Delegates from most G20 nations, nine guest nations and 12 World and regional organisations attended.
  • The old meetings of these working personnel were held in Bengaluru, Gandhinagar and Mumbai.
  • According to Richa Sharma, Additional Secretary of India's Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, the key focus areas of this group were land degradation, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity & water resources, sustainable & resilient ocean-based economy, resource efficiency & circular economy.
  • The previous meetings of this working group were held in Bengaluru, Gandhinagar and Mumbai.
  • A highlight of the ECSWG meeting was the launch of the Resource Efficiency Circular Economy Industry Coalition (RECEIC). The RECEIC has been formed with the objective to bring together nations, industries and experts in their endeavour to take forward the global circularity agenda. 39 firms from across industries are the founding members of this coalition.

MRPL Becomes Largest Single-location PSU Refinery in India

  • The Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), a mini-Ratna CPSE PSU refinery based in coastal Karnataka and a subsidiary of ONGC, became the single largest PSU-refinery (single location) in the country for the year 2022-23. MRPL achieved this feat by processing 17.14 million metric tonnes of crude oil during the past financial year.
  • This is also the highest-ever throughput processed by any single-location PSU refinery in India's petroleum refining history. MRPL processes 10 per cent of the total crude oil refined by the PSU petroleum refineries in the country. Set up as a joint venture refinery in 1988 with a 3.69 MMTPA (million metric tonnes per annum) capacity, MRPL later underwent a second and third-phase expansion to raise its capacity to 15 MMTPA.

HDFC Bank Partners Dvara KGFS for Micro Loans

  • Dvara KGFS, a Chennai-based NBFC, entered into a co-lending partnership with HDFC Bank to provide capital to micro business units operating primarily in the unorganised sector.
  • The tie-up aligns with the NBFC's this year's (2023) Annual Operating Plan (AOP) looking to enable credit for micro businesses across the 10 states that it serves.
  • As per LVLN Murty, MD, and CEO of Dvara KGFS, the co-lending partnership with HDFC Bank will enhance the company's capabilities in empowering micro businesses operating in rural areas.
  • Dvara KGFS had launched its enterprise loan vertical in 2020, focusing on three value chains viz., grocery, dairy, and agri. So far, "the company has assisted numerous beneficiaries with working capital and business growth loans, improving their livelihood generation capabilities and facilitating their inclusion in the Indian economy.

Razorpay Launches MoneySaver Export Account

  • Payment and banking company Razorpay launched an account for Indian exporters, the MoneySaver Export Account.
  • With this product, Indian exporters can now open a smart account in any country of their choice and receive payments locally via bank transfers on the Razorpay platform.
  • The initiative allows exporters to receive international bank transfers from 160 countries.
  • This is India's first smart account to offer 50% savings on international bank transfers for exporters, and helps save them from high transfer costs, chargebacks and payment failures.

India's Nidhi Buley and Ritika among Four Females to Enter BCCI Umpiring Panel

  • The Indore-based Buley sisters, Nidhi and Ritika Buley, were among the four retired female cricketers who made their way into the BCCI umpires' panel with a distinction. Nidhi played a Test and ODI for India back in 2006 while her younger sister Ritika represented Madhya Pradesh in 31 First-Class games. The BCCI conducted the exam for retired cricketers and the result was declared.
  • Apart from them, V. Kritika from Tamil Nadu and Ankita Guha of Vidarbha were the other females who passed the exam and were elevated to the BCCI panel.

Indian Men, Women Football Teams to Participate in Asian Games in China

  • The Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs permitted the Indian men's and women's football teams to participate in the Asian Games 2023 which will be held in Hangzhou in China from September 23, 2023 to October 8, 2023.
  • The Sports Ministry had earlier refused to grant clearance to the Indian football teams to take part in the quadrennial competition as they are not ranked amongst the top eight teams in Asia at present. However, Stimac and other stakeholders of the game in India demanded exemption from this regulation citing the promising form of the men's team recently coupled with the fact that similar reliefs have been provided to other sports.

Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurates Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 2023

  • Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurated the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 2023 in Greater Noida. The event is being held in India for the first time. The international event will see the participation of more than 30 Indian weightlifters, including many Khelo India Athletes who in the past month alone gave India its best-ever performance at the Weightlifting Commonwealth Championships by winning 61 medals in total.
  • Thakur expressed happiness that India is hosting this prestigious event where more than 15 nations from the Asian region, 200 athletes, and more than 50 technical staff and coaches are participating.
  • The Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships will conclude on the 5th of August.

PM Inaugurates Gujarat's First Greenfield Airport

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly constructed Rajkot International Airport in Gujarat. It is the first greenfield airport in the state and has been built at a cost of Rs. 1,405 crore.
  • The facility, located in Hirasar village, around 30 km from Rajkot, is spread over an area of 1,025.50 hectares (2,534 acres), out of which the Airports Authority of India has constructed the airport in an area of 1,500 acres.

ED Chief Sanjay Kumar Mishra to Remain in Office till September 15

  • The Supreme Court allowed Sanjay Kumar Mishra to continue as the director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) till September 15. The central government had sought an extension of his tenure till October 15, saying it would be in the nation's interest as Mishra's absence in the ongoing Financial Action Task Force (FATF) review would have an adverse effect.
  • The top court, while extending Mishra's tenure, said that the Centre's application was only considered because it was in the nation's interest.
  • Supreme Court of India also noted that there would not be any further extension and that Sanjay Kumar Mishra shall cease to occupy the post from midnight of 15-16 September.

India Developing its Own 400 km Class Long-Range Surface to Air Missile Air Defence System

  • In what could be a major boost for self-reliance in the defence sector, India is indigenously developing a three-layered long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) defence system which would be able to strike down enemy aircraft and missiles at around 400 km ranges.
  • The proposal for developing a three-layered long-range surface-to-air missile system is at an advanced stage in the Defence Ministry and is expected to be taken up for clearance soon.
  • The missile system will have three layers of surface-to-air missiles, which would allow it to hit targets at different ranges.
  • The surface-to-air missile system development work has been taking place as India worked with Israel to develop the medium-range surface-to-air missile system MRSAM which can hit aerial targets at 70 plus km.

Goa Girl Sets Record by Climbing 3 Peaks above 6,000 Metres in 62.5 Hours

  • A 12-year-old mountaineer, Gunjan Pankaj Prabhu Narvekar from Goa set a new global record by successfully climbing three peaks above 6000 metres in the Markha Valley in the Ladakh region in just 62.5 hours. After achieving this commendable feat, Gunjan now aims for Mt Everest.
  • Gunjan, a class 8 student of Jnyan Vikas School in Goa, climbed and successfully summited three peaks, namely Mt Kang Yatse-II (6250 m), Mt Reponi Mallari-I (6097 m), and Mt Reponi Mallari –II (6113 m) mountain ranges located in the Markha Valley in the Ladakh Region.
  • She climbed the three 6000 m peaks in 49 hours (1st to 3rd Summit) and 62.5 hours (base camp to base camp), setting a new global record.

International Tiger Day

  • International Tiger Day is observed globally on July 29 every year. The day is celebrated to raise awareness among individuals, organisations, and governments about the importance of the conservation of tigers. This day aims to encourage all to take appropriate action to save the wild cats. As per World Wildlife Fund, approximately 95 per cent of the population of tigers has declined in the last 150 years.
  • The day seeks to protect and expand tiger habitats apart from preserving these species. International Tiger Day is observed by many international organisations, including the World Wide Fund for Nature, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Smithsonian Institution. The current wild cat population is 3,900.
  • International Tiger Day was introduced in 2010 after it was discovered that 97 per cent of tigers had disappeared in the past century, with only about 3,000 remaining. Since tigers were on the verge of extinction, a number of countries signed an agreement at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia in 2010 to prevent the situation from worsening. Tigers are found in only 13 countries of the world, while 70 per cent of its tigers are in India only.

Shankari Chandran Wins Miles Franklin Literary Award 2023

  • Ten years ago, Sri Lankan-origin Australian writer Shankari Chandran faced difficulty in getting her debut book published. The reason: publishers thought her novel wasn't "Australian" enough to be successful in their local market. And now, Chandran has been announced as the winner of the 2023 Miles Franklin Literary Award for her novel 'Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens'.
  • Chandran's award-winning novel 'Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens' is a story about family, memories, community, race. It is an intergenerational epic that highlights Australia's difficult and complex equation with multiculturalism and the traumas of post-colonialism. It also highlights how our stories shape the people that we are today. This is Chandran's third novel.
  • The Miles Franklin Literary Award is an annual prize given to a novel which is of the highest literary merit and presents Australian life in any of its phases. This year's judges for the award included: Richard Neville- State Library of NSW Mitchell librarian and Chair; author Bernadette Brennan; translator Mridula Nath Chakraborty; critic James Ley; and poet Elfie Shiosaki.
  • The Miles Franklin Literary Award is one of the prestigious literary awards in Australia. Previous winners of the award include Thea Astley, Jessica Anderson, Tim Winton, among others.

Transgender Students in Kerala to Get Reservation in Nursing Courses

  • The Kerala government decided to grant reservations to transgender students pursuing nursing courses in the state.
  • Stating that reservations will be granted to transgenders in the field of nursing, Health Minister Veena George announced that one seat each will be reserved for the transgender students in BSc Nursing and General Nursing courses.
  • This is the first time that a reservation has been introduced for transgenders in the field of nursing. The LDF government is doing great work for the upliftment of the transgender community.
