Flipkart Partners with Axis Bank to Facilitate Personal Loans for Customers

  • Flipkart e-commerce marketplace, entered into a strategic partnership with Axis Bank, one of the largest private sector banks, to facilitate personal loans for its valued customers, adding additional convenience and enhanced benefits to its 450 million customers. The newly introduced personal loan service offers highly competitive loan options, granting access to amounts as high as Rs. 5 lakh, allowing customers flexible repayment cycles ranging from 6 to 36 months. Flipkart's introduction to personal loans demonstrates its commitment to addressing customers' demands in today's financial environment and leveraging the potential of digital lending.

Indian Refiners Start Yuan Payments for Russian Oil Imports

  • Indian refiners started paying for some oil imports from Russia in Chinese yuan, as Western sanctions force Moscow and its customers to find alternatives to the dollar for settling payments.
  • Western punishments over Russia's invasion of Ukraine have shifted global trade flows for its top export, with India emerging as the largest buyer of seaborne Russian oil even as it casts about for how to pay for it amid shifting sanctions.
  • The U.S. dollar has long been the main global oil currency, including for purchases by India, but now the yuan is playing an increasingly important role in Russia's financial system.

PNB Launches Its Virtual Branch in the Metaverse

  • State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) launched a virtual branch, PNB Metaverse.
  • It is a virtual branch of the bank, which will deliver a unique experience of banking to existing and new customers who can now explore the bank's products and services such as bank deposits, retail and MSME loans, digital products, women and senior citizens, 'Do It Yourself' and government flagship schemes.
  • PNB developed the bank's Metaverse branch, where its esteemed customers will get exclusive access to its virtual environment from the comfort of their home or office through their mobile phones and laptops.
  • In addition, the bank will offer an immersive 3D experience to customers while they perform traditional banking activities through their digital avatars.

Zaka Ashraf Appointed as Chairman of PCB Management Committee

  • The Pakistan government appointed a new 10-member PCB Management Committee, headed by Zaka Ashraf, for a period of four months.
  • Ashraf was the favourite to become chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board last month but the PCB had to postpone that election after the formation of its board of governors, which elects the new chairman, was challenged in multiple courts around the country.
  • The government Removed PCB election commissioner Ahmed Shehzad Farooq Rana and appointed advocate of Supreme Court Mahmood Iqbal Khakwani in his place.

IPL Version of Impact Player Rule in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy; BCCI Approves Asian Games Participation

  • The IPL version of the much-talked about Impact Player Rule will be used in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy (SMAT) beginning October 16, the BCCI Apex Council approved.
  • The Impact Player was introduced in SMAT last season but it had to be brought before the end of the 14th over and had to be named before the toss.
  • However, this will change from the next season. Like IPL, the teams will be allowed to name four substitutes besides the playing eleven before the toss. Out of the four substitutes, only one can be used as an Impact Player.
  • The Apex Council also approved the participation of the men's and women's teams for the Asian Games in Hangzhou in September-October.
  • A second-string Indian team will participate in the men's competition, beginning September 28 while a full-strength side will be picked for the women's event, beginning September 19.
  • Cricket has been played only thrice in the Asian Games' history and the last time it was held in Incheon in 2014 when India did not take part.

Punjab Regiment to Represent Indian Army at Bastille Day Parade in France

  • Punjab Regiment was selected to represent the Indian Army at the Bastille Day celebrations in France this year (2023). The parade will include a 269 member tri-services contingent of the Indian Armed Forces marching alongside their French counterparts.
  • The Punjab Regiment contingent comprises three officers, four junior commissioned officers and 69 other ranks, led by Captain Aman Jagtap. The Indian Navy contingent is being led by Commander Vrat Baghel and the Indian Air Force contingent by Squadron Leader Sindhu Reddy.
  • The tri-service team also includes a 38-member band from the Rajputana Rifles, the senior-most Rifle Regiment of the Army. In addition, four IAF Rafale fighter jets will also form part of the fly past during the parade.

In A First, Haryana Announces Monthly Pension for Unmarried People, Widowers

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that unmarried people in the age group of 45 to 60 years will now get a monthly pension of Rs. 2,750, provided that their annual income is less than Rs. 1.80 lakh.
  • He also announced that widowers in the age group of 40 to 60 will get a monthly pension of Rs. 2,750, provided their annual income is less than Rs. 3 lakh.

Four-member GoM to Study UCC Issues

  • The government constituted a four-member group of ministers (GoM) to study issues related to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The GoM comprises Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Smriti Irani, Arjun Ram Meghwal and G. Kishan Reddy. While Rijiju was tasked with studying issues related to tribal societies and their customs, Women and Child Development Minister Irani will look at women-related issues. Law Minister Meghwal will give an overall legal perspective to the debatable issues while Reddy will peruse matters concerning north-eastern states.

India Gains Major Attention from Korean Defense Contractors

  • As per reports, Hanwha Aerospace plans to participate in the Indian Army's Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) Project. The FICV Project aims to replace the Indian Army's 2,600 aging Soviet-made BMP-1 and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).
  • Hanwha Aerospace will partner with Indian defence contractor Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in producing the Redback. The Korean defence contractor also collaborated with L&T on the export of K9 self-propelled howitzers in 2017. With technical support from Hanwha, L&T locally produced K9 Bajiras, an Indian version of the K9 self-propelled howitzer, and supplied them to the Indian Army.
  • On top of that, Hanwha Aerospace will also participate in the Indian Army's light tank program with K21-105 light tanks. K21-105 light tanks are based on the body of the army's K21 infantry fighting vehicle and have turrets made by Belgium's John Cockerill Defence. The tank's 105 mm main gun has a maximum range of 4 kilometres and can fire not only smart shells but anti-tank missiles.

J&K Launches India's First Chatbot for People in Mental Distress

  • Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched India's first Tele-MANAS chatbot in the Union Territory, which will ensure round the clock services of health counsellors, clinical psychologists and consultants.
  • The service was launched after Sinha inaugurated 'J-K Health Conclave' on mental health and non-communicable diseases at SKICC.
  • Tele-MANAS is a two-tier system. Tier 1 comprises State Tele MANAS cells, which includes trained counsellors and mental health specialists. Tier 2 comprises specialists at District Mental Health Programme (DMHP)/Medical College resources for physical consultation and/or eSanjeevani for audio visual consultation, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare website.

Justice Goel Retires as NGT Chief

  • National Green Tribunal (NGT) Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel retired after a five-year stint. The NGT during his tenure starting July 6, 2018, disposed off a total of 16,042 cases. Of these, 8,419 were settled by the Justice Goel-led Benches. Justice Goel is also credited with taking up cases on NGT's unmanned Benches.
  • Justice Goel initiated a special drive to take up more than five-year-old cases or other cases of complex nature. These were heard and disposed of by a special Bench comprising the Chairperson and vice-chairperson.
