Iceland is the Most Peaceful Country in the World

  • The 2023 Global Peace Index released its annual ranking of the most peaceful countries in the world.
  • The Institute for Economics and Peace 2023 study measured a country's level of negative peace using three domains of peacefulness: Ongoing domestic and international conflict, Societal safety and security, Militarization/
  • Overall the index found that the world is a little less safe than last year, due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is unchanged from the 2022 survey results.
  • While the United States ranked 131 on the list, seven out of the top 10 most peaceful countries in the world are in Europe.
  • Iceland remained the most peaceful country in the world since the study was first released in 2008.
  • It also ranked as the third happiest country in the world, after Finland and Denmark.
  • The top 10 most peaceful countries in the world are: Iceland, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, Singapore, Portugal, Slovenia, Japan and Switzerland.

Reliance Jio to Sign 5G Equipment Deal with Nokia

  • Reliance Jio Infocomm is ready to finalise a $1.7 billion deal with Finland-based Nokia to buy 5G network equipment.
  • The contract is likely to be signed at Nokia's headquarters near Helsinki. Senior executives from the Reliance Group and representatives from the banks that are financing the purchase will be present.
  • Reliance's purchase from Nokia is in addition to the $2.1 billion worth of 5G equipment that it is already buying from Sweden's Ericsson. The purchases are part of Jio's arrangements as it plans to roll out its 5G services across the country by the end of this year (2023).
  • Global banks like HSBC, JP Morgan, and Citigroup are among the several banks that will be lending money to Jio to finance this 5 G equipment from Nokia and Ericsson. The total loans stand at around $4 billion.

RBI Permits UBS-owned Credit Suisse to Keep Indian Banking License

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) granted permission to UBS, the owner of Credit Suisse, to retain the banking license for operations in India. This decision came as UBS intends to reduce more than half of Credit Suisse's workforce. Additionally, UBS has yet to determine the future of the Swiss domestic business acquired from Credit Suisse.
  • To facilitate the integration of Credit Suisse, UBS has enlisted the help of Tom Wipf from Morgan Stanley, who will play a key role in the tie-up.

RBI Panel Suggests Steps for Internationalisation of Rupee

  • A Reserve Bank-appointed committee suggested a host of short-term and long-term measures for internationalisation of Indian rupee, including efforts for inclusion of the Indian currency in IMF's Special Drawing Rights (SDR) basket.
  • SDR is an international reserve asset created by the IMF to supplement the official reserves of its member countries. It is a potential claim on the freely usable currencies of IMF members. As such, SDRs can provide a country with liquidity. A basket of currencies defines the SDR: the US dollar, euro, Chinese yuan, Japanese yen, and the British pound.

Priyansh-Avneet Pair Wins Junior Mixed Team Archery Gold at Worlds

  • Indian archers Priyansh and Avneet Kaur won gold in the junior mixed team compound event, defeating Israel in the final of the World Archery Youth Championships in Limerick, Ireland. It was a nail-biting contest wherein the Indian players beat Israel with a close score of 146-144.
  • India's Manav Jadhav and Aishwarya Sharma also won a bronze medal defeating Mexico in the cadet mixed compound event.

Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh's Highest ODI Run-scorer, Retires from International Cricket

  • Bangladesh ODI captain, Tamim Iqbal, announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an abrupt end to his illustrious 16-year career. The shocking announcement was made by Tamim himself during an emotional press conference held in Chattogram, just three months before the World Cup in India.
  • The Bangladesh Cricket Board has not yet named a successor to the ODI captaincy, as Shakib Al Hasan currently leads the team in the T20I format and Litton Das holds the Test captaincy. Tamim had previously retired from T20Is last year and played his last Test match against Ireland in April.
  • He finishes his ODI career as Bangladesh's highest run-scorer with 8313 runs and 14 centuries, placing him third among current cricketers, behind Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

U20 Engagement Group of G20 Meet for the Mayoral Summit

  • U20 Engagement Group of G20 met on July 7-8 for the Mayoral Summit, which was attended by over 500 participants including mayors, Deputy Mayors, city officials and knowledge partners. Delegates and participants from 57 cities across the world and 35 cities from India gathered in the twin cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, Guharat.
  • This sixth cycle of Urban 20, was an Engagement Group under the G20. By facilitating discussions among cities from the G20 countries, the U20 established a platform for cities to collectively inform G20 negotiations with respect to urban priorities.
  • Besides the inaugural session and the handover of the U20 Communiqué by the Mayors to the G20 leaders, a number of thematic sessions and spotlight events were included in the two-day schedule. In this endeavour, Ahmedabad was supported by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) as the nodal ministry, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), the Technical Secretariat of U20, and the U20 Conveners, C40 Cities and UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments).
  • This meeting was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendrabhai Patel. Thematic sessions on the six U20 priority areas was organised during the summit. The U20 priority areas echoed the emphasis G20 is laying on environmental responsibility, climate finance, and cities of the future.
  • The six priorities under U20 were namely- 'encouraging environmentally responsible behaviours', 'accelerating climate finance', 'ensuring water security', 'promoting local culture and economy', 'reinventing frameworks for urban governance and planning', and 'catalyzing digital urban futures.'

India, Singapore Extend MoU to Co-operate on Public Administration

  • The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, and the Public Service Division, of the Republic of Singapore signed a protocol document, extending for five years the current memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of personnel management and public administration till 2028.
  • The MoU was signed by V. Srinivas, secretary on behalf of DARPG, and Simon Wong, High Commissioner of Singapore to India.
  • The MoU aims at strengthening the partnership between the two countries through various forms of cooperation between both countries' public service.
  • The cooperation in areas such as administrative reforms & public sector transformation, public service delivery, leadership, and talent development, e-governance, capacity building, and training form part of the areas to be covered under the activities of MoU.

World Food India-2023: Roundtable interaction in New Delhi

  • Ministry of Food Processing Industries organised Roundtable with Heads of Foreign Missions in India to discuss overseas participation in the World Food India (WFI) 2023, at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. The second edition of 'World Food India 2023' is being organised by the Ministry from November 3-5, 2023 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi to showcase Indian Food Processing Sector seeking collaborations and investments from global Stakeholders. The event is being organised as part of International Year of Millets 2023 activities and will have Millets (Shree Anna), organic produce and indigenous processed food as some of the focus areas.
  • The interaction was co-chaired by Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Anita Praveen, and Special Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, Prabhat Kumar. It was attended by Ambassadors, High Commissioners, Charge d' Affaires and other senior representatives from wide spectrum of countries. In all, 47 countries were represented in the interaction. Senior officers from Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Department of Commerce, APEDA, MPEDA and other Commodity Boards, apart from organizations associated with organizing the event (FICCI, Invest India & EY) participated in the deliberations.

Artist Namboothiri, Iconic Illustrator Passes Away

  • Artist Namboothiri, one of the most prolific literary illustrators in the country, passed away.
  • During his several decades-long career, Namboothiri illustrated many popular characters for literary publications in the southern states.
  • A winner of the Raja Ravi Varma Award, Namboothiri is famous for his own style of line sketches.
  • Namboothiri's contribution stands out as he has done illustrations for almost all important literary works, starting from the 1960s to 2010.
  • The eminent work for which he drew his illustrations included Jnanpith Award winner M T Vasudevan Nair's famous novel 'Randamoozham'.
  • Born in 1925 in Kerala's Ponnani, Namboothiri entered the world of painting and sculpture in his childhood.
  • A disciple of renowned artist K. C. S. Paniker, he also drew inspiration from prominent painters like Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhury and S Dhanapal. He studied painting at the Madras School of Fine Arts.

New Medical College on RIMS Pattern Coming Up in Ranchi

  • Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced the establishment of a new medical college in Ranchi, following the pattern of the state's renowned Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).
  • The objective is to offer world-class healthcare facilities and ensure equal access to healthcare for all citizens. The government's initiatives also include the opening of medicine shops at the panchayat level, creating self-employment opportunities, and providing air ambulance services at affordable rates.
  • Chief Minister Soren emphasised the need to bridge the gap in healthcare services between the rich and the poor. The upcoming medical college in Ranchi will focus on providing excellent healthcare facilities to meet the growing demand.

Allahabad University to Soon Start 10 New Multidisciplinary Courses

  • A total of 10 new multidisciplinary courses will start from this session at Allahabad University, also known as the Oxford of the East. Under the flagship programme, the New Education Policy (NEP) of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the university administration has prepared new courses.
  • However, admission to only 7 courses will start from this session. Further, admissions to other courses will be given from the next academic session. These courses include five years of BCA and MCA, MSc Cognitive Science, BSc and MSc Family and Community Science, 5-Year Integrated Courses in Disaster Management and Environmental Studies, BA LLB Honours, 5-Year Integrated Law Course, and 5-Year MBA Course.
  • Apart from this, proficiency courses in Music, Sports, NCC, Elements of the Constitution, Mental Health, Financial Market, Discovery Science and Technology, Film and Theater & Therapeutic Nutrition and Yoga are also being started. Along with this, new courses are being started in European languages, French, Russian and German proficiency courses, and in oriental languages Urdu, Sanskrit and English.

SC Collegium Recommends 7 Judges as Chief Justices for Various High Courts

  • The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the name of seven different judges as the Chief Justice of seven separate High Courts.
  • The Collegium recommended the names for the High Courts of Bombay, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Orissa and Kerala.
  • The Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sanjiv Khanna made these recommendations at a collegium meeting.
  • If the name is cleared by the Centre then Gujarat HC will get a woman Chief Justice as Collegium proposed Justice Sunita Agarwal as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Gujarat.
  • Once appointed, she would be the only woman Chief Justice of a High Court as currently there is no woman representing the same post.
  • The SC Collegium recommended Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Judge, High Court of Judicature at Allahabad as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Bombay.
