Iran to Join Shanghai Alliance with China, Russia

  •  As per Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Iran will be formally approved as a member of the regional Shanghai Cooperation Organisation with China, Russia and Central Asian countries.
  • "At the meeting of heads of state on July 4, the full membership of Iran will be approved," Lavrov said at the opening of an SCO centre in Moscow.
  • Iran has intensified its diplomacy with friends and foes alike, seeking to reduce its isolation, improve its economy and project strength.
  • SCO membership was already on the cards and Iran is also hoping to be quickly accepted into another grouping that excludes Western countries -- the BRICS group with Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
  • The SCO, which has its headquarters in China, is a diplomatic organisation with eight members, including India and Pakistan.

Biden to host Swedish PM for talks on NATO, Ukraine

  •  U.S. President Joe Biden will host Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson next week to talk about transatlantic security cooperation and the war in Ukraine, the White House said on July 1.The two leaders "will review our growing security cooperation and reaffirm their view that Sweden should join NATO as soon as possible," the White House said in a statement about the July 5 meeting.Sweden asked to join NATO in May 2022, three months after Russia invaded Ukraine, but its membership bid, which must be ratified by all 31 member states, has been blocked by Turkey and Hungary.
  • Western officials had hoped to formally welcome Sweden into the bloc by the time a NATO summit is held in Lithuania on July 11-12.
  • But earlier this week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced Sweden for allowing a protest during which a man burned pages from the Koran, further clouding the Nordic nation's chances of quickly joining the military alliance.

'I ask forgiveness': Dutch king apologises for Netherlands' role in slavery

  •  King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands apologised on Saturday for his country's role in slavery and asked for forgiveness during a historic speech greeted by cheers and whoops at an event to commemorate the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Dutch colonies.
  • The king's speech followed Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte's apology late last year for the country's role in the slave trade and slavery. The public expressions of remorse are part of a wider reckoning with colonial histories in the West that the Black Lives Matter movement spurred in recent years.

Zoological Survey of India celebrates 108th ZSI Day with Special Focus on 'Mission Life'

  •  Union Minister for Environment & Forest and Climate Change and Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav said we must all do everything to protect Nature and the Gifts it bestows upon us. The Minister inaugurated a three-day celebration programme of the 108th Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) Day with Special Focus on 'Mission Life' in Kolkota .
  • Addressing the gathering Mr. Yadav congratulated ZSI for completing 108 glorious years dedicated to the service of our faunal diversity. The Minister categorically pointed out that we must protect the Indian faunal diversity to protect ourselves as climate change has busted the myth that humans are superior to nature.
  • The Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey said that ZSI should focus on the research and conservation of important wetlands of Gangetic plains of India as 'Sarovar Mitra', by initiating a programme for citizen scientists for better data dissemination and conservation awareness.

SBI opens 34 transaction banking hubs

  • State Bank of India (SBI) said it has opened 34 Transaction Banking Hubs in top 21 district centres across the country to provide quick and efficient transaction banking solutions to customers. As part of the transaction banking services and current account-related offerings, SBI is planning to meet all customer needs and provide comprehensive solutions for their transaction, payment, and collection requirements under one roof. The newly set-up hubs will be staffed by product specialists who will also assist business customers with their other financial service needs.

Bank of Baroda to divest 49% in credit card arm BOB Financial Solutions

  • State-owned Bank of Baroda (BoB) plans to sell up to 49 per cent stake in credit card business arm BOB Financial Solutions Ltd.Currently, it is 100 per cent owned by BoB.The bank has floated a Request for Proposal for roping in a strategic investor, and the process is expected to complete in one year, a senior bank official said.
  • BOB intends to offload up to 49 per cent in a combination of primary and secondary capital from one or multiple investors to create more value in BOB Financial Solutions and take it to the next level of growth, the official said.
  • BOB Financial doubled the acquisition of new credit cards in FY23 by issuing close to 1.2 million credit cards compared to 0.5 million a year ago.

Indian Bank rolls out digital services under 'Project WAVE' initiative

  •  Accordingly, the city-headquartered bank in collaboration with National E-Governance Services Ltd, has introduced an electronic bank guarantee (e-BG) service to ease traditional paper-based processes.
  • This move will also reduce the turn-around time of the bank guarantee issuance and delivery to the beneficiary from an industry average of 3-4 working days to a few minutes, a bank statement said.
  • Besides, the facility would replace the need for physical stamp paper and physical signatures of customers by replacing them with digital stamping and e-signing making the entire process digital.

ESA's Euclid Space Telescope Launched

  •  The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched the Euclid space telescope. It was launched with the help of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. After reaching the orbit it sent a signal to mission control.
  • Euclid is a 1.2-meter-diameter telescope that will travel to L2, about 1 million miles away from Earth. The telescope will spend two months calibrating its instruments before commencing a six-year survey of one-third of the sky.
  • The Euclid mission's main goal is to investigate the dark side of the universe, focusing on dark matter and dark energy. For those who don't know, dark matter comprises 85 per cent of the universe's matter, however, it has never been directly observed, while dark energy is a mysterious force responsible for the universe's accelerating expansion.
  • Euclid aims to create a highly accurate 3D map of the universe by observing billions of galaxies up to 10 billion light-years away. It will reveal how dark energy has influenced the stretching and separation of matter over cosmic time.

Dream11 Secures BCCI Lead Sponsor Rights

  •  Fantasy gaming platform Dream11 won the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s lead sponsor rights for Rs. 358 crore.
  • As per reports, Dream11 emerged as the sole serious contender in the race, with only two companies showing interest by picking up the tender document.
  • Byju's had an optional agreement with the BCCI until November, but they decided to end the contract in March. Since then, Team India has been without a jersey sponsor and even played the World Test Championship 2023 final without one.
  • During this time, the team wore new training and match jerseys provided by Adidas.

Verstappen runs away with Austrian F1 sprint ra

  •  Double world champion Max Verstappen ran away with an Austrian Grand Prix sprint race in a Red Bull one-two on to increase his Formula One lead over Mexican team mate Sergio Perez to 70 points.
  • Verstappen took the chequered flag a hefty 21.048 seconds clear of Perez on a drying track at Spielberg's Red Bull Ring with Ferrari's Carlos Sainz finishing third in the 24 lap 100km standalone race.
  • Aston Martin's Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso finished fourth and fifth with Nico Hulkenberg sixth for Haas, Esteban Ocon seventh for Alpine and George Russell bagging the final point for Mercedes on slick tyres a mere 0.009 behind.

  •  A 13-member boxing team led by Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain will represent India at the Asian Games 2023, which will be held this year in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8.
  • Amit Panghal, the 2018 Asian Games and 2022 Commonwealth Games winner, and Nitu Ghanghas, the reigning world and Commonwealth Games champion in the women's 48kg, are not on the Indian boxing team for the Asian Games 2023

Ajit Pawar Joins Eknath Shinde Govt, Takes Oath as Maharashtra Deputy CM

  •  In what is seen as a massive political development ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister in the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government. Pawar, who will now share the deputy CM post with Bharatiya Janata Party's Devendra Fadnavis, took the oath at the Raj Bhavan along with several of his NCP colleagues including senior politician Chhagan Bhujbal.
  • Ajit Pawar's sudden oath-taking ceremony came hours after he met some of his party leaders at his official residence in Mumbai. Senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal and party's working president Supriya Sule were among the leaders who were present at the meeting held at Ajit Pawar's official residence 'Devgiri', while state party president Jayant Patil was not present. Some NCP MLAs were also present in the meeting.

Parliamentary Standing Committee to hold meeting on Uniform Civil Code to seek views of stakeholders

  • The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice will hold a meeting on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) today.
  • Committee head and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi informed that the panel will seek the views of the stakeholders on the matter. He added the meeting of the Committee is non-political as the panel has members from all political parties. The UCC proposes to formulate and implement personal laws of citizens which apply to all citizens equally regardless of their religion, sex, gender and sexual orientation. Currently, the personal laws of various communities are governed by their religious scriptures.

  • The Startup20 Shikhar summit under India's G20 presidency began in Gurugram, Haryana today. The Startup20 Engagement Group is hosting the two day Startup20 Shikhar summit. Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Prakash said, education and awareness play a vital role in nurturing a culturally sensitive startup ecosystem. He said, India's recent climb on the global innovation index can be largely attributed to the dynamic startup ecosystem. Mr Prakash said, startup-20 strives to create a conducive business environment across G20 nations and assist sach talents from diverse background to commercialize, scale up and innovation further.
  • On the occasion, G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said, in India, the total investment in start-ups has gone up to 19 times. He said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the startup movement in 2016. Mr Kant said the number of start-up has increased to 100 thousand from just one hundred startups. He said there is no shortage of funds for good startups with strong business models.

US Approves Sale of Ammunition and Parts to Taiwan in Defence Support

  •  The United States approved to sell $440 million in ammunition and parts to Taiwan, its latest effort to boost the self-ruling island's defence as tensions simmer with China.
  • The sale is comparatively small in scale and does not expand the range of US weaponry to Taiwan, but came as the United States and China move delicately to stabilize their turbulent relationship.
  • As per reports,  the State Department would sell $332.2 million in 30mm ammunition and related equipment to Taiwan and $108 million in spare and repair parts for wheeled vehicles and weapons.
  • The sales will help Taiwan maintain a credible defensive capability but will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

Former Punjab Deputy Speaker Bir Devinder Singh Passes Away

  •  Former Punjab assembly deputy speaker Bir Devinder Singh passes away at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. Having started out as a leader of the All India Students' Federation (AISSF), Bir Devinder was elected MLA for the first time from Sirhind in 1980 on a Congress ticket. He later won from the Kharar assembly constituency in 2002. He served as the deputy speaker of the Vidhan Sabha between 2003 and 2004 during the Amarinder Singh-led Congress regime in Punjab. He was expelled from the Congress in 2016 and joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali) in 2019. Leaders cutting across political lines expressed grief over Bir Devinder's demise.

World Sports Journalists Day

  • World Sports Journalists Day is observed globally on July 2 every year. The day aims to acknowledge the work of sports journalists and to encourage them to do better at their work. Sports journalists help millions of people in the world to receive information on various sports.

Boxing champion Mary Kom named Global Indian Icon at U.K.-India Awards

  •  Sporting legend and India's first-ever Olympic medallist in women's boxing, Mary Kom, was honoured with the Global Indian Icon of the Year award at the annual UK-India Awards in Windsor, south-eastern England. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, directing Oscar-nominated 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the field of cinema across both nations at the awards, organised by India Global Forum (IGF) as part of UK-India Week. The Nehru Centre in London, the cultural wing of the Indian High Commission, won the UK-India Award for Significant Contribution to UK-India Relations.
  • The awards were selected from a shortlist by a jury of industry experts and marked the penultimate event of the six-day UK-India Week, which included a special reception hosted by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street during which he committed to working towards a truly ambitious free trade agreement (FTA) with India.
  • The awards, now in their fifth year, recognise outstanding contributions of leaders in business, professional services, government, culture and social impact, highlighting their remarkable achievements in strengthening bilateral ties.

Under the aegis of Ministry of Culture, the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) to celebrate Ashadha Purnima at National Museum tomorrow

  •  The International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), under the aegis of Ministry of Culture, Government of India, will celebrate  Ashadha Purnima on 3 July, 2023 as the Dharma Chakra Pravartana Divas at National Museum, Janpath, New Delhi. It is the annual flagship event of IBC and the second most sacred day for Buddhists after the Buddha Purnima or the Vaishakha Purnima.
  • A video address by  the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu will be presented at the programme. The programme highlight will be the screening of the film on IBC's special project in Lumbini (Nepal) – "India International Centre for Buddhist Culture and Heritage". Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Centre at Lumbini in Nepal last year on Buddh Purnima.
  • The programme will include Dhamma talk on the Significance of Ashadha Purnima by His Holiness 12th Chamgon Kenting Tai Situpa and the Special Address by Minister of Culture and External Affairs Smt. Meenakashi Lekhi. Many other dignitaries and Patriarchs of Buddhist Sanghas, eminent Masters, Scholars, and diplomatic representatives based in New Delhi will be participating in the event.

Tushar Mehta Re-appointed as Solicitor General for India, six ASGs for Supreme Court Re-appointed

  •  Senior advocate Tushar Mehta was re-appointed as the Solicitor General of India for a term of three years.
  • Mehta was appointed as Solicitor General on October 10, 2018 and since then he had been granted extension twice.
  • According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, besides Mehta, six Additional Solicitors General for the Supreme Court were also re-appointed for a period of three years.
  • Six ASGs who were re-appointed for the top court are Vikramjit Banerjee, K. M. Nataraj, Balbir Singh, S. V. Raju, N. Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati.
