Indian-Origin Satellite Industry Expert Aarti Holla-Maini Appointed as Director of UNOOSA
Aarti Holla-Maini, a highly accomplished expert in the satellite industry of Indian origin, was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna. Her appointment follows the end of Simonetta Di Pippo's tenure. The primary objective of UNOOSA is to promote global collaboration in the peaceful exploration and utilization of outer space, as well as the effective application of space science and technology to foster sustainable economic and social progress.
With over 25 years of professional experience in the space sector, including managerial and advocacy roles, Aarti Holla-Maini brings a wealth of knowledge to her new position. Prior to her appointment as the Director of UNOOSA, she served as the Executive Vice-President of Sustainability, Policy & Impact at NorthStar Earth & Space. Before that, Holla-Maini held the position of Secretary-General at the Global Satellite Operators Association for a remarkable 18 years.
South Koreans Become Younger under New Age-counting Law
South Koreans became a year or two younger as a new law aligns the nation's two traditional age-counting methods with international standards.
The law scrapped one traditional system that deemed South Koreans one year old at birth, counting time in the womb.
Another counted everyone as ageing by a year every first day of January instead of on their birthdays.
The switch to age-counting based on birth date took effect on June 28.
President Yoon Suk-yeol pushed strongly for the change when he ran for office last year (2022). The traditional age-counting methods created unnecessary social and economic costs.
Centre Approves Rs. 56,415 crore for 16 States under Capex Scheme
The Department of Expenditure under the Finance Ministry approved capital investment proposals of Rs. 56,415 crore for 16 states in the current financial year 2023-24.
With an intent to tap into a higher multiplier effect of capital expenditure by frontloading the spending by states, the amount was approved for 16 states including Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Odisha, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and West Bengal.
The approval was given under the scheme titled 'Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment 2023-24'. The scheme, which was announced in the Budget for 2023-24 in continuation of a similar push for capex from the last three years, special assistance is being provided to the state governments in the form of 50-year interest free loan up to an overall sum of Rs. 1.3 lakh crore during the financial year 2023-24.
CCI Approves Acquisition of TCNS Clothing by Aditya Birla Fashion
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the acquisition of TCNS Clothing Co Limited by Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited.
The proposed combination involves acquisition of 51 per cent of the expanded share capital of TCNS Clothing Co Limited by Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited.
Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited is a listed company and is part of the Aditya Birla conglomerate. It is engaged in retailing of branded products within the apparel, footwear and accessories segment, through its retail stores, online retail platforms, and e-commerce marketplaces.
TCNS Clothing is also a listed company engaged in the business of manufacturing, distribution and sale of women's apparel, jewellery, footwear, and beauty products, currently undertaken under the brands ie, W, Aurelia, Wishful, Elleven and Folk Song. TCNS Clothing is also engaged in the business of wholesale cash and carry trading (including sale through franchisee outlets) of products in the aforementioned categories.
India's Amara Raja Group Secures Solar Power Project in Bangladesh
India's Amara Raja Group secured a $130 million solar power project in Bangladesh, marking its debut in the international market.
The project consists of the engineering, design, supply, installation, and commissioning of a 100 megawatt solar power plant.
According to Amara Raja Infra Private Limited (ARIPL), part of the Amara Raja Group, the project will be funded by the EXIM Bank of India and completed in 18 months.
After the project is commissioned, ARIPL will also provide comprehensive operation and maintenance services for two years, along with warranty spares and consumables.
Khandker is Head Coach of Junior Women's Hockey Team
Hockey India appointed former skipper Tushar Khandker as head coach of the junior women's hockey national team. Khandker replaced Harvinder Singh, who was named coach on an interim basis after Eric Wonink left the position in January 2023.
A deputy of senior women's team chief coach Janneke Schopman, Khandker has developed a strong portfolio as a coach over the last decade. Between 2014 and 2016, he was part of the Indian men's team in the capacity of a coach when the team won the Champions Trophy silver medal in London, a gold medal at the Asian Champions Trophy, and a bronze at the World Hockey League. He was also part of the Indian coaching staff at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
India Ends Special Olympics 2023 Campaign with 202 Medals
India ended its Special Olympics World Games 2023 campaign by winning 202 medals (76 gold, 75 silver and 51 bronze), with the last of the medals coming from the athletics track.
Speaking about the Indian contingent's performance at the Berlin Games, Chairperson Special Olympics Bharat, Mallika Nada highlighted not only their performance but also the need for inclusion and acceptance of these athletes by the mainstream.
Third Infrastructure Working Group Meeting in Rishikesh
The high profile third G20 Infrastructure Working Group meeting under G20 Indian Presidency took place in the city of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand from June 26 to 28, 2023. The meetings further discussed on the 2023 Infrastructure Agenda under the Indian G20 Presidency and followed up on the discussions held during the second IWG meeting held in Visakhapatnam. The delegates who participated in the meeting included 63 delegates from G20 member countries, invitee countries and international organizations.
The group deliberated on various aspects of infrastructure investments including developing infrastructure as an asset class, promoting quality infrastructure investment and identifying innovative instruments for mobilizing financial resources for infrastructure investment.
Ministry of Agriculture Signs an MOU with Pixxel Space India
Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare signed an MoU with Pixxel Space India Pvt. Limited in the presence of the Manoj Ahuja, Secretary, DA&FW, Pramod Kumar Meherda, Additional Secretary, DA&FW and other senior officers of the Ministry in New Delhi. C. S. Murthy, Director, MNCFC signed the MOU on behalf of Government of India, and Abhishek Krishnan, Chief of Staff represented M/s Pixxel Space India Pvt. Limited. It aims to develop various geospatial solutions on pro bono basis for the Indian Agriculture Ecosystem using Pixxel's hyperspectral dataset. The project focuses on leveraging sample hyperspectral data from Pixxel's path finder satellites to develop analytics models focused on crop mapping, crop stage discrimination, crop health monitoring, and soil organic carbon assessments. This will enable the Government to develop use cases with hyperspectral data provided by PIXXEL. MNCFC on behalf of the DA&FW will associate with Pixel team for developing and implementing the suitable methodologies.
Govt. Launches Nandi Portal to Grant NOC for Veterinary Drugs, Vaccines
The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying took a significant step towards streamlining the regulatory approval process for veterinary drugs and vaccines with the launch of the Nandi portal. The portal aims to timely process applications and grant non-objection certifications (NOC) for these essential products. With the increasing demand for veterinary products, especially due to the ongoing livestock vaccination drive, the Nandi portal will play a crucial role in expediting the approval process.
The manual system of granting permissions for the import, manufacture, and marketing of veterinary drugs and vaccines has been replaced by the Nandi portal. This digital platform integrates seamlessly with the SUGAM portal of the Central Drug Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and the Drugs Controller General of India, ensuring a more efficient and streamlined approval process.
President Confers Distinguished Service Awards on Serving, Retired Personnel
President Droupadi Murmu conferred Distinguished Service Awards, including 52 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, on 84 serving and retired personnel of the armed forces and the Indian Coast Guard.
The awards were presented during a defence investiture ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Lt Gen ADS Aujla, former commander of the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps responsible for guarding the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kashmir Valley, was awarded the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM).
The President awarded 52 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals (AVSMs), one Bar to AVSM, three UYSMs and 28 Param Vishisht Seva Medals (PVSMs) to the personnel for distinguished service of exceptional order.
Army Adjudged Best Organisation in Defence Ministry for Procurement on GeM
The Indian Army was adjudged as the best organisation in the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for procurement on Government e-Marketplace (GeM) for the financial year 2022-23.
Vice Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General M. V. Suchindra Kumar received the prestigious award on behalf of the Army.
Approximately 16,000 buyers (in the context of the Army) are registered on GeM, the officials said, adding that on an average, 60,000-80,000 transactions take place every month. The maximum of up to two lakh transactions took place in March in 2022-23.
Ajay Bhatnagar Appointed Special Director in CBI
Senior IPS officer Ajay Bhatnagar was appointed as Special Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), according to a Personnel Ministry order.
Bhatnagar, a 1989 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Jharkhand cadre, was Additional Director in the federal probe agency.
He has been appointed to the post till the date of his superannuation on November 20, 2024.
Anurag, Joint Director in the CBI, will now be Additional Director in the agency.

IIT Bombay Breaks into Top 150 in QS World Ranking
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai achieved its highest rank ever, breaking into the world's top 150 universities in the latest edition of the QS World University Ranking released in June 2023. This marked the first time in eight years that an Indian higher education institution made it to the top 150 list, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore previously achieving this feat in 2016 with a ranking of 147.
IIT Bombay was ranked 1st in India and moved significantly up from 177th rank last year (2022) to 149th rank this year (2023) in the QS World University Rankings, with an overall score of 51.7 out of 100.
Environment Ministry Gives Final Nod to 'Kalaignar Pen Monument'
The Tamil Nadu state government's proposal to construct the Kalaignar Pen Monument at Chennai's Marina Beach received Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). The clearance came with certain conditions that need to be met to ensure the protection of the marine ecosystem and wildlife.
The CRZ clearance was granted based on recommendations from the Expert Appraisal Committee (CRZ) and the Tamil Nadu Coastal Zone Management Authority.
The pen monument will be dedicated to M. Karunanidhi and will be constructed as a tribute to his legacy.

Bengaluru Airport Launches BLR Pulse App for Passengers
Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the operator of Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru, created a personalised digital travel buddy to cater to the needs of flyers.
BIAL created BLR Pulse, an omnichannel platform, in collaboration with GrayMatter Software Services. It will allow passengers to navigate within the terminal buildings and provide essential information about the airport in real time. The interactive chatbot feature in the app will enable a self-sufficient mode of finding answers to various questions, which will be further curated over time.
BLR Pulse offers real-time updates on various passenger processing touch points, including entry gates, check-in counters, and security check areas, and delivers flight timings and status updates on passengers' mobile phones or email inboxes. In addition, the 'WayFinder' feature allows passengers to navigate through the airport easily and get real-time information on queues at various touch points.
Passengers can also book a transit hotel for their short-term stay or complete their last-minute flight check-ins.
