Bhupender Yadav Addresses the Plenary Session at the 111th International Labour Conference in Geneva
Union Minister for Labour and Employment and Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav addressed the Plenary Session at the 111th International Labour Conference in Geneva. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi India is moving towards Amrit Kaal with the commitment to provide social security and decent work to its workforce.
Yadav also said that through its G20 Presidency, India aims to push for tools to map skill gaps among countries and move towards harmonisation and mutual recognition of skills and qualifications, and also aims to work with the world to find out ways for sustainable financing mechanisms to provide universal and comprehensive social security coverage to all, including for gig and platform workers.
Yadav also met the Director General of the International Labour Organization Gilbert Houngbo on the sidelines of the International Labour Conference. Issues around Employment Working Group Priority Areas of Global Skill Gaps, Gig and Platform Economy and Social Protection and Sustainable Financing for Social Security under India's G20 Presidency were discussed.

Indian Oil Corp Partners with LanzaJet to Establish Aviation Fuel Plant in Haryana
Indian Oil Corp (IOC), one of India's largest oil refiners, announced its collaboration with LanzaJet, a leading sustainable fuels technology company, to establish an aviation fuel plant in Haryana. With an investment of approximately 23 billion rupees ($280.1 million), this strategic partnership aims to promote the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the country.
The proposed 80,000-tonne aviation fuel plant will contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of the aviation industry by producing sustainable alternatives to traditional jet fuel. SAF, also known as biojet fuel, is produced from renewable sources such as agricultural and municipal waste, non-edible plant oils, and other sustainable feedstocks. By partnering with LanzaJet, which specializes in advanced biofuel technologies, IOC is emphasizing its commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship in the aviation sector.
In addition to its collaboration with LanzaJet, IOC is actively involved in a pilot project for green fuel in partnership with Praj Industries.
The establishment of the aviation fuel plant and the ongoing pilot project highlight IOC's proactive approach in driving the transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

RITES Signs Contract Agreements with National Railways of Zimbabwe
RITES signed Contract Agreements with National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) for supply of rolling stock (3000 HP Diesel Electric Locomotives and High Sided Open Wagons) valuing USD 81,175,500. However, the Contract Agreements are subject to approval of funding by funding agency.
RITES is a Miniratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Railways. It is a multidisciplinary engineering and consultancy organization.
NASA Discovers Phosphorous, Key Element for Life, on Saturn's Moon Enceladus
Phosphorus, a key element for various biological processes was discovered in icy grains spewed from the interior ocean of Saturn's moon Enceladus.
The new discovery, published by a German-led international team of scientists, was based on a review of data collected by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, the first to the planet, during its 13-year exploration of the giant planet, its rings and its moons from 2004 to 2017.
The scientists earlier found minerals and organic compounds in Enceladus' ice grains excluding phosphorus- the least abundant of six chemical elements considered necessary to all living things, and is found in the bones and teeth of humans and animals.
Phosphorus is fundamental unit of the structure of DNA and RNA and, a vital part of cell membranes and energy-carrying molecules existing in all forms of life on Earth.
First Janjatiya Khel Mahotsav Concludes in Bhubaneswar
The first Janjatiya Khel Mahotsav concluded with Odisha emerging as the overall champions in both the men's and women's categories. The grand sporting extravaganza was hosted by KIIT and was a joint initiative of the Ministry of Culture and the Odisha Government.
The first edition attracted the participation of 5,000 tribal athletes and 1,000 officials from 26 states, with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik describing the games as a historic event. The event provided a unique opportunity to celebrate the athletic prowess of the tribals and promote their cultural heritage and traditional sports on the national stage.
Karnataka emerged as the 1st runners up and Jharkhand as the 2nd runners up in the overall.
Women 20, the official engagement group of G20, held its Jan Bhagidari (Citizens' Connect) event in Mahabalipuram. The summit concluded on June 16. The theme of the summit was 'Women-Led Development- Transform, Thrive and Transcend'.
The citizen connect event on the theme - 'The Journey of Empowerment,' was supported by the National Rural Livelihood Mission, Tamil Nadu Department of Rural Development and Central Ministry of Rural Development.
The Women 20 came into force in 2015 under Turkey's Presidency of G20 in 2015, with the objective of focusing on gender equity, women empowerment, advocating for the rights of women and raising women's voices in society.
As per Sandhya Purecha, chair, W20, the key focus areas of the W20 India summit were entrepreneurship, bridging the gender digital divide, women and girls' participation in climate action, education and skill development and grassroots leadership. She added that the grouping has been working with 21 knowledge and network partners for the same.
MEIL Group Company Bags Order from Defence Ministry
ICOMM, a group company of Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL), bagged a Rs. 500 crore order from the Ministry of Defence. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) inked a contract with ICOMM Tele Limited for the procurement of 1,035 of 5/7.5 ton radio relay communication equipment containers. The delivery of the containers is scheduled to commence from the current Financial Year 2023-24.
The radio relay containers will address a long overdue requirement of mobile communication detachments of the Indian Army. The containers will be utilised to provide a protected environment for communication equipment to function in a failsafe and reliable manner. The containers would be mounted on authorised specialist vehicles and moved as per operational requirements.
ICOMM would produce the containers with all equipment and sub-systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers.

The International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) is a universally-recognized observance adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and celebrated every year on June 16. The Day recognizes the contribution of over 200 million migrants to improve the lives of their 800 million family members back home, and to create a future of hope for their children. Half of these flows go to rural areas, where poverty and hunger are concentrated, and where remittances count the most.
The history of International Day of Family Remittances dates back to 2008. The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Bank together marked the first-ever International Day of Family Remittances on June 16, 2008, with the aim of highlighting the role of migrant workers and that of their remittances in improving the economy of developing countries. Different financial organisations, policymakers, and other stakeholders, participated in the event, and discussed the positive impact of remittances on the economic development of countries worldwide.
The day received global recognition and support by various organisations and finally on June 16, 2015 the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution and declared June 16 as official International Day of Family Remittances.
According to the United Nations, the theme of International Day of Family Remittances 2023 is 'Digital remittances towards financial inclusion and cost reduction'.
The Siddaramaiah-led government in Karnataka decided to repeal the controversial anti-conversion law passed during the previous BJP regime. The state government arrived at the decision after the cabinet meeting.
This came after the Congress government hinted to review decisions taken under the earlier BJP rule, including one to look into any land allotments made to right-wing groups under their regime and others such as textbook revisions and the hijab ban.
The Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, 2021, or anti-conversion bill was passed in September 2022 in the Karnataka Legislative Council, when the then opposition Congress had staged a walkout.
The withdrawal of this controversial law was also mentioned in the Congress' manifesto before assembly elections in the southern state.
IIT Roorkee Introduces New Curriculum for BTech, BArch, BS, Integrated MTech Programmes
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee revised its undergraduate curriculum after a decade. The new curriculum was approved by the Institute Senate, the highest academic decision-making body. The new curriculum will be offered to students who will be admitted in all BTech, BArch, BS-MS and Integrated MTech programmes, as per IIT-Roorkee.
The institute has introduced concepts which make its curriculum unique in the country introducing mandatory courses on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML), Data Science, Indian Knowledge System (IKS), Tinkering and Mentoring, Talent Enhancement Baskets (TEB), Entrepreneurship, Environmental Science and Sustainability (ESSC), Community Outreach (CORE), soft skills and more.
Further, students will be getting the opportunity to pursue theme-based minor specialisation, design thinking-based projects and a lot more.
The curriculum has been designed keeping NEP 2020 guidelines in mind.
Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI) 2023
Nearly 90 per cent of both men and women have at least one fundamental bias against women, revealed the Gender Social Norms Index 2023 (GSNI). The index is released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The 2023 index showed no improvement in biases against women in a decade despite powerful global and local campaigns for women's rights.
Gender biases are pronounced in both lower and higher Human Development Index (HDI) countries. These biases hold across regions, income levels, and cultures.
According to the GSNI, biases against women can be quantified along four key dimensions: Political dimension, Educational dimension, Economic dimension and Physical integrity dimension.
Teenager from Maharashtra Dances for 127 Hours, Breaks World Record
A 16-year-old from Latur, Maharashtra, who danced for five days straight broke the record for the longest dance marathon.
According to Guinness World Records, Srushti Sudhir Jagtap broke the record for the longest dance marathon by an individual, with a time of 127 hours. The previous record of 126 hours was set by Nepalese dancer Bandana Nepal in 2018.
Describing the performance, GWR Official Adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar said that, Srushti's dance marathon took place in her college's auditorium, which was jam packed with supporters.
Explaining the rules, the record-keeping organisation said, "To achieve this record, a recognised dance style must be performed to a reasonable standard, and the participant's feet must be moving to the music at all times. Srushti performed the Kathak dance style, which is one of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance."
Srushti prepared for her record attempt for 15 months. She was trained by her grandfather, Baban Mane.
