Global Slavery Index 2023 Released

  • The Global Slavery Index (GSI) provides national estimates of modern slavery for 160 countries.
  • It is presented by Walk Free, a human rights organisation, and is based on data provided by the Global Estimates of Modern Slavery, which, in turn, is produced by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Walk Free, and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
  • The fifth edition of the GSI released in 2023 is based on the 2022 estimates. The previous four editions were published in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
  • In its report, Walk Free reported that 49.6 million people are living in modern slavery, out of which, India is home to 11 million.
  • There are three sets of key findings. The first set consists of countries that top in terms of the prevalence of modern slavery. The prevalence refers to the incidence of modern slavery per 1,000 population. On this count, the following 10 countries are the worst offenders: North Korea, Eritrea, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Tajikistan, the UAE, Russia, Afghanistan, and Kuwait.
  • The index states that these countries share some political, social, and economic characteristics, including limited protections for civil liberties and human rights.
  • The second set consists of countries with the lowest prevalence. The list includes countries such as Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Ireland, Japan, and Finland.
  • The third set consists of countries hosting the maximum number of people living in modern slavery. The list is as follows: India, China, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Indonesia, Nigeria, Turkey, Bangladesh, and the US.

World Bank Launches Its First Road Safety Project in South Asia

  • The World Bank (WB) launched its first dedicated road safety project in South Asia with a USD 358 million financing agreement signed in Dhaka with the government of Bangladesh. The project seeks to improve road safety and reduce fatalities and injuries from road crashes in selected cities, high-risk highways, and district roads.
  • Two national highways of Bangladesh, Gazipur-Elenga (N4) and Natore-Nawabganj (N6), will be taken up for the implementation of this project. The project will pilot comprehensive road safety measures, including improved engineering designs, signage and marking, pedestrian facilities, speed enforcement, and emergency care. These measures will help reduce road traffic deaths by more than 30 percent on these two highways.
  • Road signs, dividers, footpaths, zebra crossings, speed breakers and bus bays will be constructed on the two highways passing through the five divisions of Bangladesh, Dhaka, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Mymensingh to reduce accidents and fatalities.

Fino Payments Bank Partners Hubble for `Spending Account'

  • Fino Payments Bank entered into a tie-up with Sequoia Capital-backed fintech Hubble to introduce India's first spending account.
  • As per the bank, customers can park their funds, spend (on categories such as food ordering, shopping, travel, entertainment etc.) and save up to 10 per cent on all purchases made from the account.
  • Further, users can track spends across categories of over 50 brands that Hubble has partnered with and save up to Rs. 20,000 a year.
  • "The spending account is integrated with the bank's digital savings account operated through its mobile app FinoPay.

Forbes' Global 2000 List: Reliance Rises by Eight Positions

  • Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) climbed eight spots to the 45th rank, the highest for an Indian company, on Forbes' latest Global 2000 list of public companies worldwide.
  • The Global 2000 ranks the largest companies in the world using four metrics: sales, profits, assets, and market value.
  • JPMorgan, America's biggest bank with USD 3.7 trillion in assets, was at the top of the list for the first time since 2011.
  • Saudi oil behemoth Aramco is at 2nd position followed by three giant-sized state-owned Chinese banks. Technology giants Alphabet and Apple are at 7th and 10th place, respectively.

Samsung India Opens its Largest Premium Experience Store in Telangana

  • Samsung India inaugurated its largest premium experience store in Telangana at Hyderabad's Inorbit Mall.
  • According to the company, the new store highlights Samsung's entire product ecosystem through exciting zones centred on its connected ecosystem SmartThings, smartphones, laptops, audio, gaming, and lifestyle televisions.
  • The store, which is spread across 3,500 sq ft, is also said to host a variety of entertainment activities with a special focus on local culture, music, and art, offering a Samsung experience tailored to the city of Hyderabad.

Indian Archer Aditi Gopichand Swamy Breaks the under 18 World Record

  • Indian archer Aditi Gopichand Swamy scored 711/720 during the 72-arrow compound qualification round and broke the Under 18 world record during the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Colombia.
  • Swamy bettered the previous best of 705/720 set by USA's Liko Arreola. Swamy's score fell just two short of the senior record of 713 held by Colombian Sara Lopez.

Total Prize Money on offer at Wimbledon Rises

  • The total prize money on offer at Wimbledon has risen to a record 44.7 million pounds ($56.52 million) for the Championships this year (2023), the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) said.
  • Winners and runners-up of the men's and women's singles finals will also see their prize money rising to previous levels in 2019, where they received 2.35 million pounds and 1.175 million pounds, respectively.
  • The prize money for winners had fallen to 1.7 million pounds in 2021 before it was increased to 2 million pounds in 2022.

Cluster-Based Training of Trainers Project Certifies 98 Trainers under the SANKALP Programme

  • The Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) successfully certified 98 trainers who participated in the cluster-based Training of Trainers (ToT) project. This initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Automotive Sector Development Council (ASDC), GIZ-IGVET, and the Maharashtra State Skill Development Mission (MSSDS). The project, developed as part of the National component of Skill Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion (SANKALP), aimed to enhance the skills of trainers in various trades such as Advanced Welding, CNC operations, Robotics, Quality Control, and Advanced Automotive Technology.

India to Host IIAS Conference on Administrative Reforms in 2025

  • India will host the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS) Annual Conference 2025 in February in Kochi, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions announced.
  • The government's decision was conveyed to IIAS' Council of Administration in a virtual meeting by V. Srinivas, Secretary, Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).
  • The annual conference will be attended by 30 countries, 18 national sections, and over 50 IIAS universities/ institutes of public administration. The DARPG proposed the theme of the annual conference as "Next Generation Administrative Reforms - Empowering The Citizens And Reaching The Last Mile".
  • India has always viewed the IIAS as an important institution for international relations in public administration. The IIAS 2025 Conference in Kochi would represent a significant milestone for India's pursuit of next-generation administrative reforms.
  • The IIAS is a federation of member states, national sections, and academic research centres which elaborates on public administration solutions to policy challenges. Established in 1930, it is headquartered in Brussels. The Council of Administration manages the affairs of the institute, decides its program of activities, and establishes the annual budget.

'Sanshodhak' 4th Warship of Indian Navy Launched

  • 'Sanshodhak', the fourth of four ships of Survey Vessels (Large) (SVL) Project, being built by L&T/ GRSE for Indian Navy was launched at Kattupalli, Chennai. The chief guest of the Launch Ceremony was VAdm Adhir Arora, Chief Hydrographer to Government of India. In keeping with the Naval maritime tradition, Tanvi Arora launched the ship. The ship named 'Sanshodhak', meaning 'Researcher', signifies the primary role of the ship as a Survey Vessel.
  • The contract for building four SVL ships was signed between MoD and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata on October 18, 2018.
  • SVL ships will replace the existing Sandhayak Class survey ships, with new generation hydrographic equipment, to collect oceanographic data. The Survey Vessel (Large) ships are 110 m long, 16 m wide with a displacement of 3,400 tons.

  • Printer company Epson India signed actress Rashmika Mandanna as its brand ambassador. The actress will collaborate with the company to promote its products in a multi-media campaign for its 'EcoTank' printers this month. In collaborating with the actress known for her performances across Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and Tamil cinema, the company said that it hopes to leverage her popularity to reach a wider audience across the country, particularly the younger generation.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed annually on June 15 to raise awareness about the abuse and neglect experienced by older adults. This day aims to promote understanding of the importance of preventing elder abuse and supporting the rights and well-being of older people.
  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was officially recognised and established by the United Nations General Assembly on June 15, 2011 however, the history of raising awareness about elder abuse predates this specific observance. The origins of WEAAD can be traced back to the International Plan of Action adopted at the First World Assembly on Aging, held in Vienna, Austria, in 1982 and this plan emphasised the need to protect older adults from abuse, neglect and exploitation and called upon governments and societies to address the issue of elder abuse and promote the well-being of older people.
  • The theme for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2023 is 'Closing the Circle: Addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Older Age Policy, Law and Evidence-based Responses'.

World Wind Day

  • World Wind Day or Global Wind Day is a worldwide event which falls on June 15 every year. It is a day for discovering wind energy, its power and the possibilities it holds to reshape our energy systems, decarbonise our economies and boost jobs and growth.
  • The first Wind Day was organised in 2007 by European Wind Energy Association (EWEA). In 2009, the European Wind Energy Association (Wind Europe) and Global Wind Energy Council collaborated to make Wind Day a global event. The day acknowledges the power of the wind and raises awareness about its potential as a sustainable resource.

Child Rights Advocate Lalitha Natarajan Wins 2023 Iqbal Masih Award

  • Chennai-based lawyer-activist Lalitha Natarajan was awarded the 2023 Iqbal Masih Award for the Elimination of Child Labour.
  • US Consul General Judith Ravin presented the award to Natarajan at a ceremony at the US Consulate General in Chennai.
  • As a leader in the fight to end exploitative child labour in southern India, Natarajan identifies child victims of trafficking, specifically bonded labour, assisting in their reintegration into society. In her role as a member of the Child Welfare Committee (North Zone), under the Department of Social Defence, Tamil Nadu, Natarajan ensures victims receive compensation under the Child Labour Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Besides working on child labour issues, Lalitha also provides legal and counselling support to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
  • The award is named after Iqbal Masih, a Pakistani child who was sold into slavery at the age of four and forced to work in a carpet factory. He escaped at the age of ten and became an outspoken advocate for the rights of child labourers. He was assassinated in 1995 at the age of twelve.

RBI Chief Named 'Governor of the Year' At London's Central Banking Awards

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das was awarded the "Governor of the Year" at the Central Banking Awards 2023 in London. Central Banking is a London-based international economic research journal.
  • Das is the second RBI governor to receive the award after Raghuram Rajan, who was given the title in 2015.
  • The National Bank of Ukraine was named the 2023 Central Bank of the Year.

Geological Survey of India Training Institute gets accredited as 'Athi Uttam'

  • The Geological Survey of India Training Institute (GSITI), operating under the Ministry of Mines, received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board of Education and Training (NABET). This recognition is a testament to the institute's commendable services and the high standards it upholds in the realm of earth science training. The evaluation was conducted by a team comprising members from the Capacity Building Commission (CBC), NABET, and the Quality Control of India. They thoroughly inspected the institute's various levels of standard operating procedures and methodologies. Subsequently, GSITI was granted the Certificate of Accreditation with the distinguished grading of 'Athi Uttam.'
  • GSITI was established in 1976 and is headquartered in Hyderabad. It operates under the Ministry of Mines and comprises six Regional Training Divisions (RTDs) located in Hyderabad, Nagpur, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kolkata, and Shillong. Additionally, there are four Field Training Centers (FTCs) situated in Chitradurga (Karnataka), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Zawar (Rajasthan), and Kuju (Jharkhand).

Learning Company Pearson Appoints Vinay Kumar Swamy as India Head

  • Vinay Kumar Swamy was appointed as the new country head of Pearson's Indian operations, the British–owned learning company. Swamy will lead Pearson India's digital transformation as it aims to become a digital-first online learning, skilling, and assessment company.
  • He replaced - Siddharth Banerjee - who served Pearson as - Managing Director & SVP, India & Asia.
  • Before joining Pearson, Swamy was part of an investment banking firm and Clutch Group. He graduated from Bangalore University with a degree in finance and later affiliated himself with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).

Goa government Announces Career Programmes for Students of Classes 9 to 12

  • Goa government launched CareerAware and CareerReady programmes for the students of class 9 to 12. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced these career programmes. This is a pioneering initiative of the state government to impart guidance and training to the students related to their career concerns.
  • The initiative has been undertaken in partnership with Antarang and Adhyayan Foundations to provide comprehensive career guidance and career readiness training to secondary and higher secondary students in all schools.
  • The CareerAware programme will be implemented for Classes 9 and 10, focusing on enabling students to develop self-awareness, understand their interests and aptitudes, and gain clarity in their career plans.

Ramachandra Guha's Book Wins Elizabeth Longford Prize 2023

  • Historian and writer Ramchandra Guha's book 'Rebels Against the Raj: Western Fighters for India's Freedom' won the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography, in 2023. Guha was awarded £5,000 (Rs. 5 lakh approximately) and a bound copy of Elizabeth Longford's memoir.
  • The Bengaluru-based historian's book tells the story of seven foreigners — four British, Two American, and one Irish — who joined India's freedom fight against British rule. The list of names includes Annie Besant, B.G. Horniman, Philip Spratt, Richard Ralph Keithahn, Samuel Stokes, Madeline Slade, and Catherine Mary Heilemann.
  • The award was founded in 2003 by Flora Fraser and Peter Soros to commemorate British historian Elizabeth Longford. Every year it rewards exemplary works in historical biography.

Centre Notifies Appointment of 3 Advocates as Judges of Bombay High Court

  • The Centre cleared the appointments of three advocates, Shailesh Pramod Brahme, Firdosh Phiroze Pooniwalla, and Jitendra Shantilal Jain, as additional judges of the Bombay High Court for a period of two years. The Supreme Court had last month (May) recommended their names as judges of the Bombay HC.
  • The Bombay HC is functioning with 63 judges, 40 permanent judges, and 23 additional judges. However, the sanctioned strength of the Bombay HC, which is the second-largest in the country after the Allahabad High Court, is 94. With the elevation of three lawyers as additional judges of the HC, its strength will go up to 66.
  • The Bombay High Court was one of the three High Courts in India established at the Presidency Towns by Letters patent granted by Queen Victoria. It was inaugurated on August 14, 1862.
