To Counter Chinese Presence, US May Soon Rejoin UNESCO
UN cultural and scientific agency UNESCO announced that the United States plans to rejoin and pay more than USD 600 million in back dues after a decade-long dispute sparked by the organisation's move to include Palestine as a member.
As per reports, the decision to return was motivated by concern that China is filling the gap left by the US in UNESCO policymaking, notably in setting standards for artificial intelligence and technology education around the world.
The US and Israel stopped funding UNESCO after it voted to include Palestine as a member state in 2011, and the Trump administration decided in 2017 to withdraw from the agency altogether the following year, citing long-running anti-Israel bias and management problems.
The return of the US, once the agency's biggest funder, is expected to face a vote by its 193 member states next month.

International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) is celebrated annually on June 13. The holiday is organized by the United Nations to battle discrimination against those diagnosed with albinism and to create a society that is aware. This event is also an opportunity to celebrate the human rights of persons with albinism worldwide.
Albinism was a serious problem in Tanzania during the mid-2000s. The country is believed to be having the highest percentage of albinos living. Hundreds of them have been brutally murdered and mutilated in the African country in the past decades. Local superstitions claim their body parts can bring luck and prosperity. Another widespread rumor is that albinos are evil spirits. The Tanzania Albinism Society (TAS) and other NGOs campaigned for the human rights of albinos. On May 4, 2006 they celebrated the first Albino Day. 2009 onwards, it came to be known as National Albino Day.
In 2013, the UNHRC adopted a resolution called "Attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism." This UN resolution appealed for the prevention of attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism since it is still profoundly misunderstood, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion and leads to various forms of stigma and discrimination.
Eventually, On December 18, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution proclaiming 13 June as International Albinism Awareness Day, with effect from 2015. In response to the call from civil society organizations, the UNGA also created the mandate of Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism on March 26, 2015.
The theme for International Albinism Awareness Day 2023 is 'Inclusion is strength'.

Germany Has the Most Private Contemporary Art Museums in the World
Germany took the top slot for the number of private museums of contemporary art, according to a new report that has just gone live—just piping the US by a single figure.
The report is the brainchild of Christoph Noe, the founder of the art collector data company Larry's List, working with a team of researchers including the Hong-Kong based Jamie Bennett and the University of Amsterdam academic Olav Velthuis.
The number of museums they record has grown, up from 317 in their previous 2016 report to a stunning 446 this year. And the line-up has also changed: in 2016 South Korea was number one, while Germany was third. This time (2023) five countries dominate the list: Germany (60), the US (59), South Korea (50), Greater China (30) and Italy (30). Interestingly, these countries are home to half of all private museums in the world, not necessarily the biggest, though, but the sheer number of them beats out the 54 other countries listed.
