Zerodha's Nikhil Kamath Becomes Youngest Indian to Join 'The Giving Pledge'

  • Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, became the youngest and fourth Indian to join 'The Giving Pledge,' in which the world's wealthiest families and individuals vow to donate the majority of their income to charity organisations.
  • The initiative was founded in 2010 by Warren Buffett, Melinda Gates, and Bill Gates.
  • Kamath (35) is only the fourth Indian after Azim Premji, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, and Rohini and Nandan Nilekani to join the community.
  • Kamath founded Zerodha in 2010, as well as Gruhas for private investments, hedge fund True Beacon that manages wealth for ultra HNIs in India, fintech incubator Rainmatter, and Rainmatter Foundation, which supports climate-related non-profits.
  • The Giving Pledge invites billionaires worldwide to contribute a majority of their wealth to social causes like poverty alleviation, refugee aid, disaster relief, global health, education, women's and girls' empowerment, medical research, arts and culture, criminal justice reform, and environmental sustainability.
  • The Giving Pledge is a campaign to encourage wealthy people to contribute a majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.

Amid Tensions with US, Iran Unveils 'Hypersonic Missile'

  • Iran claimed that it had created a hypersonic missile capable of travelling at 15 times the speed of sound, adding a new weapon to its arsenal as tensions remain high with the US over Tehran's nuclear programme.
  • The new missile, called Fattah, or "conqueror" in Farsi, was unveiled even as Iran said that it reopened its diplomatic posts in Saudi Arabia after reaching a détente with Riyadh following years of conflict.

RBI Governor Launches Financial Inclusion Dashboard 'Antardrihsti'

  • RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das launched a financial inclusion dashboard named 'Antardrishti'. As the name suggests, the dashboard will provide the required insight to assess and monitor the progress of financial inclusion by capturing relevant parameters.
  • This facility will also enable to gauge the extent of financial exclusion at granular levels across the country so that such areas can be addressed.
  • Presently, the dashboard is intended for internal use in the RBI. It will further facilitate greater financial inclusion through a multi-stakeholder approach.

Aditya Birla Group to Enter Jewellery Retail Business

  • Aditya Birla Group announced its foray into the branded jewellery retail business with its new venture Novel Jewels Ltd. The company will invest Rs. 5,000 crore to set up large-format exclusive jewellery retail stores with in-house jewellery brands across the country.
  • As per Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of Aditya Birla Group, this foray is a strategic portfolio choice that allows tapping into new growth engines and expands our presence in the vibrant Indian consumer landscape.
  • This is the group's third major foray into a new business in the last two years after paints, and business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce for building materials.

Wipro Launches Innovation Experience for Financial Services with Microsoft

  • IT major Wipro Limited launched the Wipro Industry Innovation Experience for Financial Services, featuring a new suite of banking and financial services solutions built on Microsoft Cloud.
  • The Innovation Experience will bring together Microsoft Cloud capabilities with Wipro FullStride Cloud, as well as leverage Wipro's and Capco's deep domain expertise in financial services.
  • Microsoft and Wipro will develop new solutions to help financial services clients accelerate growth and deepen client relationships.
  • The Innovation Experience will allow financial services firms to explore new solutions in an immersive 3D environment. Solutions currently available as part of the experience range from prevention of financial crime and loan origination to those that help transform core banking systems and maximize cloud investments.

World's Most Powerful Wind Tunnel Opens in Beijing

  • China completed the construction of the most powerful wind tunnel in the world, located in the mountainous Huairou district of northern Beijing. The wind tunnel, called JF-22, has a diameter of 4 metres (13 feet) and can generate incredibly high airflow speeds of up to 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) per second. This makes it capable of simulating hypersonic flight conditions up to Mach 30, which is 30 times the speed of sound.
  • The Institute of Mechanics, which owns the facility, stated that the JF-22 wind tunnel will play a crucial role in advancing China's hypersonic ambitions. The tunnel will support research and development efforts for China's space transport system and hypersonic aircraft, as well as for military purposes.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Launches Kerala Fibre Optic Network Project

  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the ambitious Kerala Fibre Optical Network (KFON), which is envisaged to provide high-speed internet connectivity for all households in the state.
  • CM Vijayan said that Kerala is the only state in the country which has made the right to access the internet a basic right. The state is implementing KFON to ensure that the internet as a basic right does not remain on paper.
  • The state is now providing basic infrastructure to take high-speed internet to all people.
  • As part of the project, KFON connection has been given to 17,412 government offices and 2,105 households.

Siddharth Choudhary Clinches Gold in Men's Shot Put Event of U-20 Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea

  • India showcased its dominance on the second day of the Under 20 Asian Athletics Championships in Yecheon, South Korea. India's Siddharth Choudhary clinched gold in men's shot put with a personal best throw of 19.52 metres.
  • Further three other athletes Sharuk Khan (3000 m steeplechase), Shivam Lohakare (Javelin), and Susmita (Long Jump) claimed silver medals in their respective events. Shakeel (800 m) and the mixed relay team concluded the day by winning the bronze medal. With this India won six medals on day 2 with the overall tally accounting to nine.

Sunil Kumar Wins the Decathlon Gold

  • Competing with a pole vault borrowed from the organisers, Sunil Kumar won the decathlon gold medal with his personal best performance in the Asian U-20 Athletics Championships in Yecheon, South Korea.
  • Sunil bagged gold as he won the 10-event competition with a personal best tally of 7,003 points on the penultimate day of the competition.
  • Sunil won the 100m hurdles, discus throw and javelin throw to make up for the below-par show in the other events and secure gold in the gruelling discipline competed over two days.

Sachin Pilot Likely to Float Party on June 11

  • The compromise enforced by the Congress leadership in its Rajasthan unit appears to be falling apart as speculation is rife that Sachin Pilot is likely to walk out and announce a new party, 'Pragatisheel Congress', on June 11, the death anniversary of his father Rajesh Pilot.
  • The former Deputy CM is reportedly being helped with the groundwork for the formation of the new party by Prashant Kishor's IPAC. There is talk about Pilot joining hands with Hanuman Beniwal's Rashtriya Loktantrik Party and AAP.

Indian Navy Successfully Carries Out Underwater Test

  • The Indian Navy successfully carried out a test to hit an underwater target.
  • As per the Navy, the successful engagement of an underwater target by an indigenously developed Heavy Weight Torpedo was a significant milestone in the Indian Navy's and Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) quest for accurate delivery of ordnance on target in the underwater domain.
  • This was the second sea-level test in a fortnight.
  • The missile, known as 'Sea Skimming', hit the target floating in the sea from below.

Sixth Edition of India-Maldives Exercise 'Ekatha'

  • Indian Navy divers and Marine Commandos are in the Maldives for the sixth edition of Exercise Ekatha with Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) from June 4 to July 3. The annual exercise is conducted between the two forces to enhance interoperability in diving and special operations.
  • The fifth edition was held from September 5, 2022 to October 3, 2022.

Colonel Shuchita Shekhar Becomes First Woman Officer to assume command of Communication Zone Mechanical Transport Battalion

  • In a historic moment for the Indian Army, Colonel Shuchita Shekhar became the first woman officer of the Army Service Corps to assume command of a Communication Zone Mechanical Transport Battalion. The battalion, responsible for the maintenance of the supply chain of the fully operational Northern Command, plays a vital role in army logistics, including animal transportation.
  • This milestone marked a significant step forward in the Indian Army's efforts to promote gender equality and inclusivity, even in senior positions.

World Food Safety Day

  • World Food Safety Day is celebrated on June 7 every year to encourage producers, consumers and governments to acknowledge the mutual responsibility of food safety. The United Nations (UN) assigned two of its agencies, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to lead efforts in promoting food safety around the world.
  • A resolution was adopted on December 20, 2018, by the United Nations General Assembly to mark June 7 as the day 'celebrating the myriad benefits of safe food'. The first-ever World Food Safety Day was celebrated on June 7, 2019, just a few months after it was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018.
  • The theme for World Food Safety Day 2023 was 'Food Standards Save Lives'.

President Droupadi Murmu Conferred the Highest Civilian Award of Suriname

  • President Droupadi Murmu was conferred with Suriname's highest civilian award by her counterpart Chandrikapersad Santokhi to honour the deep-rooted bilateral ties. Murmu was in Suriname on a three-day state visit - her first since assuming office in July 2022.
  • She was conferred with the highest civilian honour of Suriname 'Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star' by the President of Suriname at a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace.
  • She said that this recognition holds immense significance, not only for her but also for the more than 1.4 billion people of India. She dedicated the honour to the successive generations of the Indian-Surinamese community, who have played a stellar role in enriching the fraternal ties between the two countries.

Maharashtra CM Launches Asia's Largest Cluster Development Scheme

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde launched Asia's largest, ambitious and historic cluster development scheme in Thane. While launching the scheme, Shinde said that his much-awaited dream is coming into reality but he will be the happiest person in the world only on the day the beneficiaries of the scheme will receive the keys of their own house.
  • This scheme was conceptualised for the collective redevelopment of unauthorised and official dangerous buildings after the collapse of the Sairaj Building in Thane which had claimed 18 lives. The redeveloped township plan includes well-equipped health, educational, sports, recreational, parking, mandi, and civic facilities. The CIDCO will execute the project. Under the project, the integrated redevelopment project will be done on the lines of townships.
  • Chief Minister Shinde announced that the scheme will be implemented not only in Thane but also in Mumbai and the Mira-Bhayandar area of Thane district. He added that 10,000 houses will be constructed in the first phase of cluster development in Thane on 1500 acre area. He expressed confidence that the projects which are stalled or delayed will be completed with greater initiative with the help of CIDCO, MHADA, and BMC and those who had to migrate away from Mumbai will be brought back.

PM Modi Launches Schemes for Wetland, Mangrove Conservation

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched two schemes, namely Amrit Dharohar and MISHTI (Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes). These schemes are aimed at reviving and conserving India's wetlands and mangroves, contributing to the campaign for a green future and green economy.
  • Conserving Ramsar Sites 'The Amrit Dharohar Yojana' focuses on the conservation of existing Ramsar sites in India through active public participation. Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. With this scheme, these sites will become centers of eco-tourism and a source of green jobs, benefiting local communities. The scheme aims to achieve sustainable ecosystem development and will be implemented over the next three years.
  • Reviving Mangrove Ecosystems 'The Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes' (MISHTI) aims to restore and protect the mangrove ecosystem in India. Mangroves play a crucial role in mitigating the threats posed by rising sea levels and cyclones to coastal areas and the livelihoods of communities. The scheme targets the restoration of mangrove cover across nine states in the country. Over the next five years, nearly 540 square kilometres of mangrove area will be comprehensively developed across 11 states and two union territories, starting from the fiscal year 2024.
  • The MISHTI scheme has several primary objectives, including:

  • Mobilizing resources through public-private partnerships
  • Promoting sustainable development and livelihoods in coastal areas

NIRF 2023: NLSIU Bengaluru Best Law School in Country

  • Like last year, the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru grabbed the top spot under the best performing law colleges category in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 released by the Ministry of Education.
  • This year (2023), the NLSIU scored 80.52 points, an improvement from 78.00 points in 2022. The second position was secured by National Law University, New Delhi, the same as previous year. The university scored 73.91 points.
  • Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad secured the third spot with 73.76 points. In 2022, the university was at the fourth position. The number 4 rank was bagged by West Bengal National University of Juridicial Sciences, Kolkata with 69.34 points, up from the fifth position in 2022.

First Cruise Vessel "MV Empress" Between Chennai, Sri Lanka Flagged Off

  • The first international cruise vessel between Chennai and Sri Lanka 'MV Empress' was flagged off by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
  • The occasion also marked the inauguration of an international cruise tourism terminal, set up at a cost of Rs. 17.21 crore at the Chennai Port. The facility spread across 2,880 square metres would be able to host 3,000 passengers.
  • The launch of the cruise service came in the backdrop of the memorandum of understanding signed between Chennai Port and Waterways Leisure Tourism for domestic and international cruise service at the Incredible India International Cruise Conference in 2022.
