BBC Chairman Announces Resignation over Loan to Boris Johnson

  • BBC Chairman Richard Sharp announced his resignation after controversy about role in arranging loan for former Prime Minister of United Kingdom Boris Johnson. Sharp resigned over involvement in securing a private credit line for up to $990,000 for the then-PM Boris Johnson from a Canadian businessman.
  • The country's public appointments watchdog has been investigating the way in which Sharp was selected by the government to chair the broadcaster in 2021.

Razorpay Joins Hands with ONDC to Offer Payment Reconciliation Service

  • Razorpay, a fintech payments and banking platform for businesses, joined the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a non-profit company set up by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) as an alternative for internet shopping.
  • With this, the Tiger Global-backed firm became the first payment gateway to launch a Payment Reconciliation Service for Network Participants (NPs) like buyers, sellers, and logistic partners on ONDC. This will provide them with an integrated single view of all their transactions.
  • Founded in 2014 by Kumar and Harshil Mathur, Razorpay is backed by the likes of Y Combinator and other marquee investors such as TCV, GIC, Tiger Global, Sequoia Capital India, Matrix Partners, Salesforce Ventures, and MasterCard have invested a total of $741.5 million in the firm. The company is currently valued at around $7 billion.

Arya.ag Announces Partnership with Shivalik Small Finance Bank

  • Shivalik Small Finance Bank announced a strategic partnership with Arya.ag, a grain commerce platform, to provide financing to small farmers against warehouse receipts. The collaboration will enable Arya.ag to further its mission of driving financial inclusion for farmers and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in India. Through the partnership, Shivalik Small Finance Bank will offer loans to farmers and FPOs under Warehouse Receipt Finance, using the stored crops as collateral. The business correspondent model partnership will facilitate loan disbursement, credit assessment, documentation, and recovery. This partnership will help in promoting financial inclusion in rural areas and strengthening the agriculture ecosystem in India.
  • Under the partnership, Shivalik Small Finance Bank will offer loans to farmers and FPOs through warehouse receipt finance. This means that farmers can use their stored crops as collateral for securing loans from the bank, which can help them in accessing credit and managing cash flow efficiently.

Embassy REIT CEO Vikaash Khdloya Resigns

  • Embassy Office Parks REIT's CEO Vikaash Khdloya resigned and the company appointed Aravind Maiya as the new CEO with effect from July 1, 2023.
  • Maiya has been previously associated with Embassy REIT as its Chief Financial Officer and comes with over 22 years of experience, including in real estate, capital markets, audit and consulting.
  • Embassy REIT, sponsored by Blackstone and realty firm Embassy Group, is India's first publicly listed Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT).

India, UK to Create India-UK 'Net Zero' Innovation Virtual Centre

  • According to minister of state for science and technology Jitendra Singh, India and the UK are set to jointly establish the India-UK 'Net Zero' Innovation Virtual Centre.
  • The announcement was made during the India-UK Science & Innovation Council meeting, chaired by Singh and attended by UK Science Minister George Freeman.
  • The two leaders called for increased science and technology collaboration between the countries.
  • The minister emphasized the close cooperation between India and the UK, as evidenced by the ambitious 'Roadmap 2030,' which outlines collaboration across various sectors, including health, climate, trade, education, science and technology, and defense.

Dima Hasao Insurgent Group Signs Peace Pact with Assam, Centre

  • An Assam-based insurgent group, Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA)/Dimasa People's Supreme Council (DPSC), which operates in the Dima Hasao district, signed a peace agreement with the State Government and the Centre in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
  • After the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU), Mr. Shah said that the agreement has put a complete end to insurgency and with this, there are no more armed groups in Assam.
  • Dimasa Welfare Council will be set up by the Government of Assam to protect, preserve and promote a social, cultural, and linguistic identity to meet political, economic and educational aspirations and will ensure speedy and focused development of the Dimasa people residing outside the jurisdiction of the Autonomous Council.

Expelled from JD(U), Ajay Alok Joins BJP

  • Former JD(U) leader Ajay Alok, a regular on TV debates, joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
  • He has been a strong defender of the BJP's policies and is seen by the party as a sharp and articulate voice.
  • Vaishnaw lauded Alok's contribution and praised him as a sharp analyst.
  • In June 2022, the JD(U) had expelled Ajay Alok from the primary membership of the party.
  • Besides Ajay Alok, JD(U) also suspended state general secretaries Anil Kumar and Vipin Kumar Yadav from primary membership.

India, UK Joint Military Exercise 'Ajeya Warrior 2023' Commences in the UK

  • Military troops of India and the United Kingdom (UK) kick-started the seventh edition of 'Ajeya Warrior 2023', a two-week joint military exercise at UK's Salisbury Plains, as part of efforts to consolidate the overall military ties. The soldiers of the 2 Royal Gorkha Rifles from the UK and Indian Army troops from the Bihar Regiment are participating in the military exercise.
  • Ajeya Warrior is a biennial training event with the UK which is conducted alternatively in both countries. The last edition was held at Chaubatia, Uttarakhand in October 2021.

Ayushman Bharat Diwas

  • Ayushman Bharat Diwas is celebrated across India on April 30. This day revolves around the Ayushman Bharat Yojna launched in 2018 by Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. The Yojna refers to a scheme meant for providing healthcare benefits to major sections of the Indian population, who cannot afford the required medical facilities for themselves.
  • Ayushmaan Bharat Diwas, is a day observed to uplift the ideals of the Ayushman Bharat Yojna. This scheme reflects the fulfilment of the objectives of the Indian Government that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), under the United Nations. One of the sustainable goals of the UN with respect to universal health coverage is to "leave no one behind."

68th Filmfare Awards 2023

  • The 68th edition of the Hyundai Filmfare Awards took place at the Jio World Conventional Centre in Mumbai. This year's (2023) ceremony was co-hosted by Salman Khan, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Maniesh Paul, marking Salman Khan's first time as a host for the event. The awards were presented in collaboration with Maharashtra Tourism. Minister Narayan Rane Launches the Revamped CGTMSE Scheme

  • Union Minister for MSME Narayan Rane launched the revamped CGTMSE Scheme in Mumbai. CGTMSE has been provided with an additional corpus support of Rs. 9,000 crore in the Union Budget for FY 2023-24 to revamp its Scheme to provide guarantee for additional Rs. 2 lakh crore to Micro & Small Enterprises. Accordingly, the major revamp measures were launched and disseminated to the lending institutions. The modifications included reduction in guarantee fees for loans up to Rs. 1 crore by 50% bringing the minimum guarantee fee to the level of 0.37% pa only. Another major change announced was raising of ceiling for guarantee from Rs. 2 crore to Rs. 5 crore and enhancing the threshold limit for claim settlement without initiation of legal action to Rs. 10 lakh.

Jharkhand's First Air Ambulance Services Commences

  • Jharkhand launched its first air ambulance services. Apart from Ranchi, air ambulance services will also be made available at Deoghar, Dumka, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Giridih and Jamshedpur This move of the government will boost medical transport facilities in the state by connecting it to other destinations in case of requirement. The ambulance services would be made available to all at competitive rates.
  • The destinations specified so for the service are New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Lucknow and Tirupati.

Three-day Heritage Festival at Saligao

  • The tourism department of the Goa government held the 'Heritage Festival 2023' from April 28 to 30 at Saligao village in North Goa. The festival aimed to promote cultural tourism in the state by showcasing its traditions, culture, and arts. The festival featured various performances, such as dances, heritage walks, culinary delights, musical shows, and more.
  • The festival was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in the presence of Union Minister Shripad Naik, State Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, and Chairman of Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ganesh Gaonkar.

Supreme Court Invites Public Suggestions after Releasing Draft List of Neutral Citations of over 10,000 Judgments

  • A list of over 10,000 judgements from January 1,2 014 to March 31,2023 was released by the Supreme Court. The judgements are proposed with neutral citations to facilitate crowdsourced checking.
  • The exercise is to check for any missing or incorrect items that can be addressed with the help of legal professionals and publishers.
  • As per the notice, the inputs on the same should be sent to the Registrar of the top court's Library and Editorial Section within 15 days.
  • One may compare the list of cases and neutral citations with their own database and accordingly make suggestions regarding any missing or incorrect data, if any, in the list of judgements.
  • A final list of judgments with neutral citation will be published by the Registry after the suggestions are received and recorded.
