Government Sets Target Of Achieving 500 GW Of Green Energy For Central PSUs Every Year: Report

  •  The government has set a target of achieving 500 gigawatts of green energy every year for central government owned public sector undertakings (PSUs).
  • The government has released a detailed agency wise break up on inviting bids for renewable energy projects with total capacity of 50 GW for 2023-24, Moneycontrol reported.
  • The country's total green energy production reached 125 GW in March 2023, according to Central Electricity Authority.
  • The government has said that it will float tenders for 15 GW of green energy in first two quarters of current financial year and 10 GW tenders for the last two quarters. The government has appointed NTPC, Sola Energy Corporation of India, NHPC and SJVN as the renewable energy implementing agencies.
  • The renewable energy implementing agencies will be permitted to bring out bids with or without storage for solar, wind, solar-wind hybrid, round-the-clock (RTC) RE power and so on

Hari Hara Mishra takes charge as CEO of Association of Asset Reconstruction Companies

  •  Hari Hara Mishra has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Association of Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARCs). The ARCs are the voice of all Asset Reconstruction Companies in India and have been active for over eight years. Currently, there are 28 ARCs registered with the Reserve Bank of India.
  • Hari Hara Mishra has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Association of Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARCs). Shreekant Bhandiwad is KVGB chairman

  •  Shreekant M Bhandiwad has taken charge as the new chairman of Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB). Outgoing chairman P Gopikrishna handed over the charge to the new incumbant. Shreekant M Bhandiwad  holds a master's degree in agricultue and is also a certified associate of Indian Institute of Bankers. A native of Dharwad, Shreekant carries with him the experience of 29 years in Canara Bank, having worked across India (Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar and Karnataka) in various capacities. Prior to his joining as chairman of KVGB, Shreekant Bhandiwad was heading the Patna circle of Canara Bank. P Gopikrishna has been repatriated to Canara Bank as circle head, Bengaluru.

Infosys Partners With Walmart Commerce Technologies To Deliver Omnichannel Solutions To Retailers

  •  Indian IT services company Infosys has joined hands with Walmart Commerce Technologies to help retailers harness technology solutions that simplify customer and store employee experiences.
  • Infosys will help retailers implement and use Store Assist, which enables them to provide "seamless omnichannel experiences" such as pickup, delivery and ship from store for both employees and customers, the company said in a statement.
  • It is pertinent to mention that Infosys has a consumer and retail focused practice that has been helping retailers, consumer tech, consumer packaged goods and logistics companies navigate their way through digital and emerging technologies over the last three decades.

India-built Mongolia refinery by 2025'

  •  Mongolia's first oil refinery, built and funded with Indian assistance, will be completed by 2025, said the country's Ambassador Dambajav Ganbold. In an interview, Ganbold said the first stage of Mongol Oil Refinery, built with a $1.2 billion Indian soft loan, will be completed at the end of this year.
  • The development comes with strategic implications as Mongolia is entirely dependent on Russia for its energy imports. The refinery, Ganbold said, would help Mongolia meet 70% of its demand domestically. Mongolia also hopes to attract Indian investment in its mining and metals, with plans to start shipping coking coal to India by 2024. Mongolia also has key rare earth metals, which may be crucial to India's ambitions to build cutting edge technological capabilities in semiconductors and green mobility.
  • Indian firms have already visited Mongolia to explore these opportunities. In order to facilitate these exchanges, Mongolia and India are expected to establish regular direct flights

Australia to host third in-person Quad Summit on May 24 in Sydney

 Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that his country will host the third in-person Quad Summit on May 24 in Sydney. It will be attended by US President Joe Biden, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He said, the Quad is committed to supporting an open, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific that is respectful of sovereignty and ensures security and growth for all. The Australian PM said that the Quad leaders will discuss how the grouping can work alongside partners and regional groupings including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Pacific Islands Forum, to strengthen cooperation and shape the region. 

International Girls in ICT Day 2023: 27th April.

  •  International Girls in ICT Day is an annual event celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April to encourage and empower girls and young women to explore and pursue careers in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This day helps to promote gender equality and diversity in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It raises awareness about the gender gap in the tech industry and inspires women to consider careers in ICT.
  • This year, it is being observed on April 27 with the theme "Digital Skills for Life". Despite the significant role of ICT in our lives, a relatively small percentage of women globally opt for higher education in ICT-related fields, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
  • International Girls in ICT Day was declared by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on April 8, 2011, to encourage women to pursue careers in information and communication technologies. The Day has been celebrated globally since its inception, with over 11,400 events held in 171 countries and more than 3,77,000 girls and young women participating.
  • Governments, ICT regulatory bodies, businesses, academic institutions, UN agencies, and NGOs support the event, which provides opportunities for girls to learn about ICT, meet role models and mentors, and explore various career paths in the industry.

US State Pennsylvania Recognizes Diwali as an Official State Holiday.

  • Senator Nikil Saval tweeted that the state of Pennsylvania in the United States has declared Diwali, the Hindu festival, as a national holiday. The legislation to make Diwali an official state holiday was introduced by State Senators Greg Rothman and Nikil Saval in February of this year.
  • The bill was passed unanimously by the Senate. According to My Twin Tiers, there are almost 200,000 South Asian residents in Pennsylvania, many of whom celebrate Diwali as a time for gathering and reflection. Senator Saval expressed gratitude to Senator Rothman for the opportunity to introduce this bill and welcomed all Pennsylvanians who celebrate Diwali.

Dalai Lama Gets 1959 Ramon Magsaysay Award In Person After 64 Years

  • The 1959 Ramon Magsaysay Award was presented to Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama at his residence here by members of the award foundation personally after 64 years. 
  • It was the first international award given to "His Holiness for Community Leadership in recognition of his leadership of the Tibetan community's gallant struggle in defense of the sacred religion that is the inspiration of their life and culture" by the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation in the Philippines in August 1959.
  • Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation president Susanna B Afan and Foundation Trustee Emily A Abrera met with the Dalai Lama, the Nobel Peace laureate, to personally present the 1959 Ramon Magsaysay Award after 64 years.

Union Cabinet approves National Medical Devices Policy

  • According to a release issued by the government, the policy is expected to provide the required support and directions to strengthen the medical devices industry into a competitive, self-reliant, resilient and innovative industry that caters to the healthcare needs of not only India but also the world. 
  • The Union Cabinet approved the National Medical Devices Policy, 2023, which is expected to facilitate an orderly growth of the medical device sector to meet the public health objectives of access, affordability, quality, and innovation.
  • It will help the sector grow from the present $11 billion to $50 billion in the next five years."The National Medical Devices Policy, 2023 aims to place the medical devices sector on an accelerated path of growth with a patient-centric approach to meet the evolving healthcare needs of patients,'' the government said in the release.

  • He said that India's traditional healthcare systems held a lot of answers to stress and lifestyle diseases and called for an integrated, inclusive and institutional global response to healthcare challenges.

Cabinet approves establishment of 157 new nursing colleges 

  •  The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved establishment of 157 new nursing colleges "in co-location with the existing medical colleges" established since 2014.
  • The step will add approximately 15,700 nursing graduates every year and is aimed at addressing the geographical and rural-urban imbalances in the healthcare sector.
  • Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced the decision and said that the government plans to complete the project within the next two years and has laid out detailed timelines for every stage of planning as well as execution of the project.
  • A release issued by the Central government noted that the government has increased the number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS seats in last few years. "There is an increase of around 71% in medical colleges from 387 before 2014 to 660 as of now. Further, the number of MBBS seats have almost doubled and postgraduate seats have more than doubled since 2013-14.

PM inaugurates 6th Edition of One Earth One Health.

  •  Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and addressed the One Earth One Health – Advantage Healthcare India – 2023 conference at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi via video conferencing.
