India Improves its Ranking by 6 Spots in Global Business Environment Rankings
India improved its ranking by six spots in the latest Business Environment Rankings (BER) globally, according to data released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
The upward shift is due to its improved score in parameters like technological readiness, political environment, and foreign investment among others.
The BER measures the attractiveness of the business environment in 82 countries on a quarterly basis across 91 indicators.
The rankings for the second quarter of 2023 show that Singapore, Canada, and Denmark will be the three countries with the best business environment over the next five years.
Solar Energy Corporation of India Gets 'Miniratna Category-I' Status
State-owned Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI) got the status of Miniratna Category-I Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE). A communication to this effect was issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
The SECI Incorporated in the year 2011, is the primary implementing agency for renewable energy schemes/projects of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy towards fulfilment of India's international commitments.
Till date, SECI has awarded Renewable Energy (RE) project capacities of over 56 GW. SECI is also active in setting up of projects through its own investments as well as for other public sector entities as Project Management Consultant (PMC). SECI enjoys highest credit rating of AAA by domestic rating agency ICRA.
HDFC Bank Signs Agreement with Export-Import Bank of Korea for $300 Million
HDFC Bank signed a "Master Inter Bank Credit Agreement" with Export Import Bank of Korea for a USD 300 million line of credit.
The pact was signed by the two entities at GIFT City in Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar on Wednesday, said a release by the HDFC Bank. This agreement will help HDFC Bank raise foreign currency funds which it would extend to Korea-related businesses.
This line of credit would be utilised by HDFC Bank towards funding requirements of companies having equity participation by Korean companies as well as companies having business relationship with Korean companies.
Yes Bank Becomes First Indian Company with over 50 lakh Shareholders
Private sector lender Yas Bank became the first Indian company to have over 50 lakh shareholders, according to the shareholding pattern of the bank on March-end 2023.
Tata Power was a far second with 38.5 lakh shareholders, followed by Reliance Industries with 33.6 lakh shareholders, according to the December 2022 shareholding disclosures.
The bank had 50.6 lakh shareholders as of March 31, 2023, all of whom were public shareholders. This was an increase from 48.1 lakh shareholders as of December 2022, most likely owing to the end of the three-year lock-in period for shareholders that held equity shares of the bank when it underwent the reconstruction scheme in March 2020.
IIT-Bombay and UIDAI Join Hands to Develop Touchless Biometric System
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay), to develop a touchless biometric capture system for easier use, anytime and anywhere.
Under the MoU, UIDAI and IIT Bombay will carry out joint research to build a mobile capture system for fingerprints along with liveness model integrated with the capture system.
Once developed and operational, the touchless biometric capture system will allow fingerprint authentication from home, akin to face authentication. The new system is expected to capture multiple fingerprints at one go and improve the authentication success rate. Once in place, it will be an addition to the existing facilities available in the Aadhaar ecosystem.

India signs MoU with World Food Programme for Sending Wheat to Afghanistan
India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Food Programme (WFP) paving the way for sending 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat for the people of Afghanistan. The signing ceremony between officials of the Ministry of External Affairs and the United Nations WFP was held in Mumbai where the WFP assured that it had the required infrastructure on the ground to ensure speedy delivery of wheat to the most vulnerable sections of the Afghan population.
Animal Pandemic Preparedness Initiative Launched
The Union government drew up the country's first animal pandemic response plan in collaboration with the World Bank, which will be implemented as a central government scheme to deal with outbreaks such as the devastating lumpy skin disease among cattle in 2021-2022,. It will also enhance the government's capacity to monitor diseases that jump from animals to humans, such as Covid-19.
The programme seeks to ramp up surveillance, treatment and diagnostics infrastructure across 151 districts in five states with a federal funding of Rs. 1,229 crore, according details of the scheme launched by Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala.
Officially named the "Animal Pandemic Preparedness Initiative", the programme will focus on prevention of outbreaks, especially zoonotic diseases, or infections caused by microorganisms that jump from animals to humans. Ebola and Sars are examples of zoonotic diseases; Covid-19 is most likely one too.
North Korea Tests New Solid-fuel "Hwasong-18" ICBM
North Korea successfully test-launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile powered by solid propellants, a development that if confirmed could provide the country with a harder-to-detect weapon targeting the continental United States.
The launch was supervised on site by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who described the missile, named Hwasong-18, as the most powerful weapon of his nuclear forces that would enhance its counterattack abilities in the face of external threats created by the military activities of the United States and its regional allies.
North Korea justified its weapons demonstrations as a response to the expanding military exercises between the United States and South Korea, which the North condemns as invasion rehearsals while using them as a pretext to push further its own weapons development.
NFSU Becomes First Government University of India to Open a Campus Abroad
India's National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) opened its first overseas campus in Jinja, Uganda, marking a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between India and Uganda. NFSU is the first government university of India to open a campus anywhere abroad.
NFSU is an institution of national importance and the world's first university dedicated exclusively to forensic sciences.
The campus in Uganda was established due to the high demand for courses in forensic sciences among African students on scholarships provided by the government of India.
Modi Inaugurates AIIMS Guwahati, the First in Northeast
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) of the Northeast, located in Guwahati.
During the inauguration, PM Modi also participated in the celebrations with Bihu dancers and drummers, making it a unique moment. Additionally, he laid the foundational stone of Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute and a new bridge that connects Palashbari-Sualkachi on the outskirts of Guwahati.
The AIIMS Guwahati has 750 beds and 30 AYUSH beds, with a capacity of 100 MBBS students. It will provide world-class health facilities to the people of the Northeast.
Assam's Traditional Bihu Dance Enters Guinness Book of World Records
India's North-eastern state Assam created history and marked its name in the Guinness Book of World Records by performing the traditional Bihu dance at a single venue.
More than 11,000 performers, including drummers and dancers, participated at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati in the State Government's bid to register its world record in the Guinness Book.
Practice sessions were held across the state to bring in the best performers for the mega event with the aim being to put Assam's cultural heritage on the world map.
Supreme Court Sets Aside Calcutta High Court Order over Attack on Convoy of Home Minister in Cooch Behar
The Supreme Court rejected the order by Calcutta High Court directing a CBI probe into the attack on the convoy of MoS (Home) Nisith Pramanik in Cooch Behar district in February 2023.
An instruction was issued by a bench led by Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud directing the High Court to re-examine the material placed by the West Bengal police for deciding whether the case needs CBI probe.
