UP's Suhelwa Sanctuary Records First Photographic Proof of Tigers

  • Suhelwa Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh is a new area where photographic evidence of tigers was captured for the first time. The sanctuary was established in 1988 and is located in Shravasti, Balrampur, and Gonda districts of Uttar Pradesh. It spans across 452 sq km and is positioned on the border of India and Nepal. It is renowned for its natural resources and named after King Soheldev, with the Shivalik ranges of the Himalayas located nearby. Suhelwa Wildlife Sanctuary is a significant area within the Bhabar-Tarai eco-system region, which is renowned for its diverse range of flora and fauna.

Nepal and India to Sign Agreement for Cross-Border Digital Payments

  • Nepal and India are preparing to sign an agreement to allow cross-border digital payments through e-wallets, a move that is expected to boost trade and tourism between the two countries by eliminating currency exchange issues. The accord, expected to be signed during Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's visit to India, will allow Indian tourists in Nepal to make digital payments through Indian e-wallets like BharatPe, PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. The launch of digital payment services will eliminate the hassle of carrying large amounts of cash for Indian tourists and businessmen in Nepal and is expected to increase inter-operable real-time person-to-person (P2P) and merchant payment transactions (P2M) in Nepal.

SEBI Unveils New Logo on 35th Foundation Day

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) unveiled a new logo on the occasion of the market regulator's 35th Foundation Day. The new logo retains the traditional blue palette but also reflects on a more modern design.
  • "SEBI's new logo seeks to reflect the unique combination of its rich traditions and its new data and technology-based approach in all the three areas of its mandate in the securities market--development and regulation of the securities market and investor protection," said Sebi chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch, who is also the first woman to lead the market regulator in its 35-year history.
  • SEBI was established on April 12, 1988 under the Ministry of Finance. However, the body was granted statutory powers in 1992. SEBI functions as a quasi-judicial body and is said to have more statutory powers than other market regulators like the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) of the United States.

MRF Second Strongest Tyre Brand in the World

  • MRF emerged as the second-strongest tyre brand in the world according to the latest report by Brand Finance on the 'Most Valuable and Strongest Tyre Brands' in the world.
  • MRF scored high in almost all parameters and is also featured as the second fastest-growing tyre brand in the world. It scored 83.2 out of 100 in brand strength and was awarded a AAA- brand rating.
  • The report, which also named MRF as the most valued Indian tyre brand, said that it scored high in the Sustainability Perception Value and is the only Indian tyre manufacturer to be featured in the top 10.
  • Brand Finance's annual report on the most valuable and strongest automobile, auto component, tyre and mobility 2023 analysed the value of brands in these industries.

UAE's Rashid Rover to Land on Moon on April 25

  • The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), a Dubai government organisation working on the UAE space programme, announced that the Rashid Rover, onboard the HAKUTO-R Mission 1 Lunar Lander, is scheduled to land on the Moon on April 25.
  • The landing date is subject to change depending on operational conditions.
  • During the landing sequence, the lander will perform a braking burn, firing its main propulsion system to decelerate from orbit. Utilising a series of pre-set commands, the lander will adjust its altitude and reduce velocity to make a soft landing on the confirmed site of Atlas Crater in the Mare Frigoris.

Chennai to Host Asian Hockey Men's Championship

  • After a gap of 15 years, Chennai is set to host the Asian Hockey Men's Championship this year (2023). The State government would extend financial assistance for hosting the international hockey event.
  • The championship would be held at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in the last week of August 2023. The men's Asia Cup hockey championship in 2007 was the last international hockey event that happened in Chennai.

Antim Stopped at Final Hurdle by Fujinami

  • Young Indian wrestler Antim Panghal won silver in the 53 kg category at the 2023 Asian Wrestling Championships after losing to Japan's Akari Fujinami, while four other Indian wrestlers clinched bronze medals.
  • Anshu Malik (57 kg), Sonam Malik (62 kg), Manisha (65 kg) and Reetika (72 kg) added to India's medal count by winning their bronze medal bouts.

Ministry of Education Organise Young Authors' Conference on Occasion of SCO Summit 2022-23

  • India hosted the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Young Authors' Conference in New Delhi on April 12-13.
  • The conference was part of the calendar of events drawn up by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, under the current Chairmanship of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
  • The Ministry of Education, GoI organised the Young Authors' Conference with National Book Trust, India, an autonomous organisation, under the Ministry of Education, as the Implementing Agency.
  • The theme of the Conference was 'Civilizational Dialogue amongst the SCO member nations – Perspectives from Young Scholars', with the sub-themes of History and Philosophy, Economy, Religion, Culture, Literature and Science and Medicine.

International Conference on Defence Finance and Economics

  • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh kicked off a three-day international conference on Defense Finance and Economics in New Delhi.
  • As per the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Defence (Finance) conference will provide a platform for eminent policymakers, academics and government officials from within and outside the country to share their insights and experiences on Defence Finance and Economics in the context of evolving security challenges and policies globally.
  • The conference will be attended by delegates from the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Kenya, and aims to promote communication and collaboration among participants while also contributing to the country's defence readiness through optimal financial resources and effective defence budget implementation.
  • It intends to participate in global talks on defence finance and economics and present a long-term blueprint on the subject. It also targets to spread best practices, experiences and expertise from other countries, as well as to align procedures in the Indian context with worldwide standards.
  • The conference also facilitates collaborations with foreign governments, international institutions and global leaders in the domains of Defence Finance and Economics in order to support the government's ongoing efforts towards indigenisation and self-reliance in the defence sector, as well as to advance transformative reforms.

India's Under-river Metro, Makes its First Run

  • In 1984, Kolkata created history by being the first city in the country where the Metro services were started. Thirty nine years later, the City of Joy created history again as the Kolkata Metro undertook its first maiden under-river journey through a tunnel under the Hooghly River from Mahakaran to Howrah.
  • Metro Rail's general manager P. Uday Kumar Reddy, along with other senior officials of the Metro Rail and the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited, travelled from Mahakaran to Howrah Maidan station on rake no-613, which crossed Hooghly River.
  • Terming it as a historic event, the general manager of the Metro Rail said that trial runs on the 4.8 km section from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade will be conducted for seven months, after which the Metro service on this route will be made available to the public.

Greek-Indian Air Forces to Conduct Joint Exercise

  • The Greek and Indian Air Forces will collaborate on a joint training exercise with Su-30, F-16, and Rafale fighter jets for ten days over Greece and the Mediterranean Sea. The exercise will be conducted as part of the annual Greek exercise Iniochos 23, led by the Greek Air Force and the Greek Air Tactics Centre of the Ministry of Defence. The training is scheduled to begin on April 18 and will conclude on April 28.

India's Oldest Billionaire Keshub Mahindra Passes Away

  • Keshub Mahindra, the Chairman Emeritus of Mahindra & Mahindra and India's oldest billionaire, passed away at the age of 99. He had a net worth of $1.2 billion as per Forbes. He retired as the Chairman of Mahindra Group on August 9, 2012, and passed on his responsibilities to his nephew, Anand Mahindra.
  • Under his 48-year long tenure as Chairman, the Mahindra Group diversified from being solely an automobile manufacturer to expanding into other sectors such as IT, real estate, financial services, and hospitality. Keshub Mahindra played a crucial role in establishing strategic partnerships with global giants like Willys Corporation, Mitsubishi, International Harvester, United Technologies, British Telecom, among others.
  • Keshub Mahindra was born on October 9, 1923, in Shimla and earned his degree from Wharton, University of Pennsylvania, USA. He joined the Mahindra & Mahindra Group in 1947 and eventually became its Chairman in 1963.

  • Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group, received the Business Leader of the Decade Award. In his acceptance speech, Birla said, "It is a very special award because it recognises longitudinal contribution over a period of ten years."
  • Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, presented the 13th AIMA Managing India Awards to India's high-performing management leaders and institutions for their contribution to nation-building.
  • Scindia congratulated the awardees and called the awards a wonderful portrayal of Indian capability.
  • Apart from Birla, T.V. Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel was awarded with AIMA JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award on the occasion, Sanjiv Bajaj, MD of Bajaj Finserv received the Transformational Business Leader Award and Venu Srinivasan, Chairman Emeritus, TVS Motor Company was given the Outstanding Institution Builder Award for making the TVS Group a significant force in the domestic and international automotive markets.

Chhattisgarh Launches Scheme for Tribals

  • Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was in Chhattisgarh during which she attended the launching of a state government scheme for tribals in Jagdalpur city in Bastar district.
  • Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel was the chief guest at the event "Bharose Ka Sammelan" where 'Mukhyamantri Adivasi Parab Samman Nidhi Yojana' was launched.
  • Under this scheme, the state government will provide annual financial assistance of Rs. 10,000 (in two instalments) to Gram Panchayats in the scheduled areas for organising tribal festivals, fairs, and religious programs.
  • At the event, the Chief Minister disbursed the first instalment of Rs. 5,000 each for 1,840-gram panchayats in the Bastar division, comprising seven districts.
  • The scheme is aimed at preserving tribal culture and traditions.

Central University of Kerala Awards its First Honorary D.Litt to P.T. Usha

  • Olympian P. T. Usha, the renowned Indian athlete and coach, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the Central University of Kerala (CUK). The ceremony took place at Sabarmati Hall, Periya Campus, where Vice Chancellor Prof. H. Venkateshwarlu conferred the degree upon her, making her the university's first recipient of this prestigious title.
  • Vice Chancellor Prof. H. Venkateshwaralu praised Usha as the pride of the nation and a role model for the youth. He emphasized that it is the university's duty to honor and recognize such distinguished individuals who have inspired and contributed to their respective fields.
  • The event was attended by Deans, Heads of Departments, Teachers, Students, and Staff, among others. The CUK awarded the honorary doctorate to Usha in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Indian sports.

Digital Library System e-Granthalaya Implemented in 100+ Uttarakhand Universities

  • The 'e-Granthalaya' portal was linked to over 100 higher educational institutions in Uttarakhand, providing online access to course books and research papers in various subjects for 1.9 lakh students and faculty members.
  • Higher Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat stated that the state is on track to achieve 100% digitisation of higher education in the near future.
  • The e-Granthalaya platform, created and maintained by the National Informatics Centre under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is designed to automate in-house activities and provide member services and networking for resource sharing for government libraries.

Madhya Pradesh's Gond Painting Gets GI Tag

  • The famed Gond painting of Madhya Pradesh received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • A geographical Indication (GI) tag is a sign used on products which have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. It is used for industrial products, foodstuff, agriculture products, spirit drinks, and handicrafts. GI Tag ensures that no one other than the registered authorised user is allowed to use the name of the popular product.
  • Padma Shri awardee and famous Gond artist Bhajju Shyam said that it is a matter of pride for us. With this, the people of tribal and Gond dominant communities will now get direct benefit.

Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh New Chief Justice of Tripura HC

  • Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh was appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, replacing Justice Jaswant Singh who retired. The Department of Justice in the Law Ministry issued a notification stating that President, under the powers conferred by Article 217 of the Constitution of India, appointed Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, who is a judge at the Jharkhand High Court, to assume the position of the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court.
  • On January 25, the collegium approved the nomination of Justice Jaswant Singh, a judge of the Orissa High Court, as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. However, a week after Justice Singh's appointment, on February 19, 2023, Justice Singh announced his retirement from the service. The collegium then recommended that Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh be appointed Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court.
  • Since 1990, Singh has worked as a lawyer in the High Courts of Patna and Jharkhand. Later, in 2012, he was elevated to the position of additional judge in the Jharkhand High Court. From December 22, 2017 to February 19, 2018, he also served as the High Court's interim Chief Justice.
