World's first conservation, breeding centre for Asian king vultures ready in UP's Maharajganj

  • Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre (JCBC) in UP's Maharajganj district, the world's first conservation and breeding centre built and designed exclusively for the conservation of Asian king vulture, is ready and may be inaugurated anytime soon by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Asian king vulture is critically endangered and protected under the Wildlife Protection Act.
  • Spread over 1.5 hectares in the Gorakhpur forest division, it is a state-of-the-art centre, worth around Rs 15 crore, with multiple aviaries (cage for birds) for vultures, like breeding and holding aviaries, nursery aviaries for juveniles, hospital and recovery aviaries for those needing medical help. A food processing centre, where food for vultures will be prepared and checked before being fed to the population and an incubation centre to rear eggs artificially to ensure 100% results are other features.

Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka among 5 states in front runner category of state energy efficiency index

  •  Five states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, have featured in the front-runner category of the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI) report for 2021-22, according to an official release.
  • Rajasthan and Kerala are the other two states in the front-runner category which shows that states scored more than 60 points on various parameters under SEEI to assess state-level energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Assam, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Punjab are in the achiever category, scoring points between 50-60 on the index parameters.
  • The index developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in association with Alliance for an Energy-Efficient Economy (AEEE), assesses the annual progress of states and UTs in energy efficiency implementation for FY 2020-21 and 2021-22. SEEI 2021-22 has an updated framework of 50 indicators aligned with national priorities.

In a first, ICICI Bank introduces EMI facility for UPI payments

  •  The ICICI Bank has introduced an EMI facility for UPI payments made by scanning a QR code. The private sector lender said that customers, who are eligible for the PayLater facility, can avail of the EMI facility using the Bank's 'buy now, pay later' option.The EMI facility for UPI payments can be availed across a host of categories such as electronics, groceries, fashion apparel, travel, and hotel bookings, the private bank said.
  • Through this facility, ICICI Bank customers can pay transaction amounts above Rs 10,000 in easy installments in three, six, or nine months. The bank stated that the new facility will be extended shortly for online shopping as well.

Tim Cook set to inaugurate India's first Apple store on April 18

  •  Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple is all set to visit India for the first time in seven years to inaugurate the country's first Apple store in BKC, Mumbai on April 18 says Bloomberg. Today, the world's richest tech brand confirmed to launch two new Apple stores in India in April, located in BKC Mumbai, and Saket New Delhi on April 18 and 20, respectively.
  • Tim Cook visited India back in 2016 for a country tour. Since then, Apple has seen enormous growth in the country and has even made several new initiatives such as local manufacturing of iPhones and the launch of the Apple store online.

Vikas bags solitary bronze for India on Day 2 of Asian Wrestling Championship

  •  Vikas pinned Jain Tan of China 8-0 by technical superiority in the 72kg Greeko-Roman category to clinch a third bronze medal for India in the ongoing Asian Wrestling Championships here on April 10.
  • On the second day of the tournament, Sumit (60kg) and Rohit Dahiya (82kg) fell by the wayside in their bronze medal matches, but Vikas took just one minute and 41 seconds to knock out his Chinese rival.Mr. Sumit lost to Maita Kawana of Japan 14-6 after picking cautions in his bout. Mr. Dahiya on the other hand lost to Alireza Azizkhoon Mohamadipiani of Iran 1-5

Ons Jabeur downs Belinda Bencic to win Charleston Open, first title of the year

  •  Ons Jabeur defeated defending champion Belinda Bencic in straight sets to win the WTA Charleston Open clay court tournament on Sunday.
  • Jabeur, the world number five from Tunisia, avenged her defeat to Bencic in last year's final with a hard-fought 7-6 (8/6), 6-4 victory in just under two hours.

Election Commission grants national party status to AAP; withdraws national tag of Trinamool Congress, CPI, NCP

  •  With the removal of NCP, CPI, and TMC, there are now only six national parties in the country – BJP, Congress, National People's Party, CPM, Bahujan Samaj Party and the latest addition AAP.
  • According to Election Commission rules, a party gets national status if it is recognized as a state party in four states. For recognition as a state party, it has to secure at least six percent of the valid votes polled and two seats each in Assembly or Lok Sabha polls.
  • The AAP got the status of a national party as it secured nearly 13 percent of the vote share and five seats in the Gujarat Assembly polls earlier this year making it the state party in four states—Delhi, Goa, Punjab and Gujarat.Reacting to his party getting the national party status, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said: "National party in such a short time? This is nothing less than a miracle. Many congratulations to all. Crores of people of the country have taken us till here. People expect a lot from us. Today people have given us this huge responsibility. Lord, bless us so that we can fulfill this responsibility well"

HM Amit Shah launched Vibrant Villages Programme in Arunachal Pradesh

  •  Home Minister Amit Shah has launched the 'Vibrant Villages Programme' in Kibithoo, a border village in the Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh.He has also inaugurated nine Micro Hydel Projects of the AP government constructed under the "Golden Jubilee Border Illumination Programme" in Kibithoo.These electricity projects will empower people living in border villages.In the first phase, 662 villages have been identified for priority coverage

UIDAI - IIT Bombay join hands to develop touchless biometric capture system

  •  Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has joined hands with Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay) to develop a robust touchless biometric capture system for easier usage by people anytime, anywhere.
  • As part of the memorandum of understanding, UIDAI and IIT Bombay will carry out joint research to build a mobile capture system for fingerprints along with liveness model integrated with the capture system.
  • The touchless biometric capture system, once developed and operational, will allow fingerprint authentication from home alike face authentication. The new system is expected to capture multiple fingerprints at one go and aid authentication success rate further. The new system once in place will be an addition to the existing facilities available in the Aadhaar ecosystem.

IAF, USAF hold joint exercise after Covid-19 gap

  •  The war games between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the United States Air Force (USAF) are being held after a gap of four years since it had been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The last edition was held in 2019.
  • The Su-30MKI fighter aircraft will spearhead the IAF contingent which also features the LCA Tejas, IL-78 mid-air refuelers and air-borne early warning aircraft.
  • The US Air Force (USAF) contingent has flown in from the Pacific command of the US military and will field the F-15 fighter aircraft.
  • The Pacific command of the US military coordinates with India in the Indo-Pacific sector as both nations strive to counter growing Chinese influence in the region.

Philippines, US kick off largest-ever joint military drills

  •  The Philippines and the United States launched their largest-ever joint military exercises on Tuesday, as the longstanding allies seek to counter growing Chinese assertiveness in the region.
  • Nearly 18,000 troops are taking part in the annual exercises dubbed Balikatan, or "shoulder to shoulder" in Filipino, which for the first time will include a live-fire drill in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost entirely.
  • The drills follow Monday's conclusion of a three-day Chinese military operation that simulated targeted strikes and a blockade of self-ruled, democratic Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory.

National Safe Motherhood Day

  • On April 11 every year, National Safe Motherhood Day is observed with the objective of promoting the well-being and safety of mothers and expectant mothers by increasing awareness of proper healthcare. This initiative, launched by the Indian government, aims to decrease the number of maternal and neonatal deaths. In the past, India was recognised as one of the most perilous countries to give birth, responsible for 15% of all maternal fatalities worldwide.
  • The inception of National Safe Motherhood Day as an annual event was initiated by the White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI) to emphasize the significance of adequate healthcare facilities for mothers, particularly during pregnancy.
  • The Indian government proclaimed April 11 as National Safe Motherhood Day in 2003. This date is also significant because it coincides with the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, the wife of Mahatma Gandhi, who was a prominent freedom fighter and social reformer. Since then, National Safe Motherhood Day has been commemorated with a variety of awareness campaigns and events held throughout the country.
  • The theme for National Safe Motherhood Day 2023 was 'Motherhood is a blessing from God'.

EAM Jaishankar launches 'Tulsi Ghat Restoration Project' in Uganda

  •  External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was received by Uganda Foreign Minister General Jeje Odongo and Uganda Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja on his arrival in Uganda on April 10, 2023.
  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on April 10 launched the 'Tulsi Ghat Restoration Project' of Varanasi, during his visit to Uganda's Kampala.
  • "Living in a land of the Nile, their commitment to a ghat on the Ganga reflects the confluence of our two cultures. The conservation of Varanasi's heritage underlines the cultural revival of India. This has profound global implications," he said. "Confident that many more members of the Indian community in Uganda will keep visiting Varanasi and continue their efforts for its redevelopment," he added.
  • Earlier he met Uganda's President Yoweri K. Museveni at his farm in Rwakitura and congratulated the country on assuming the chairship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Ayush Ministry to hold 'Yoga Mahotsav' in Dibrugarh on April 7: Sarbananda Sonowal

  •  The Ministry of Ayush is organising the 'Yoga Mahotsav' on April 7, 2023 to commemorate the 75 days to International Day of Yoga at Dibrugarh University campus. The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal today visited the site at Dibrugarh University to take stock of the preparation for the event. The state Health Minister, Keshab Mahanta along with senior officials of Ministry of Ayush along with the district administration of Dibrugarh accompanied during the visit here today.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Ayush Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal said, "It is a moment of great pride as our beautiful Dibrugarh gets ready to host one of the biggest Yoga events in the country on April 7, 2023. It is a wonderful connection that we also celebrate the World Health Day on the same day, which ultimately is to create a conduit for the humanity to live better, healthier & happier. Yoga can do that. Due to the consistent effort of PM Shri Narendra Modi ji, yoga has become worldwide movement towards achieving better health & mind. True to our heritage, India remains committed for every effort to further this journey of Yoga as it becomes the elixir for quality human lives.   • The Union Minister also interacted with the students of the University along with the Health Minister and Prof Jiten Hazarika, Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh University among others. The discussions ranged on different topics ranging from importance of Ayush in improving our lives to the opportunities created for the benefit of the students in further their role in the nation building. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also called upon the students to take active part in the successful hosting of the Yoga Mahotsav.

India releases first edition of Dogri version of Indian Constitution

  • "Understanding law is essential in accessing justice by a common person," said Union Minister of Law Kiren Rijiju while releasing the Dogri version of the Constitution of India. The first edition of the Dogri version was released at the University of Jammu on 8th April 2023. Addressing the gathering, the Law Minister said that understanding the law is essential in accessing justice by a common person and it can't be done better than having it codified in one's mother tongue. He called the translated document very significant in the dispensation of justice to common people.

T.N. Governor grants assent to Bill banning online gambling

  •  A senior official at the State Secretariat said the Raj Bhavan had confirmed the Governor's decision to the government.
  • The Bill, was first passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in October 2022. According to the Statement of Objects and Reasons of the Bill, online gambling and online games are addictive in nature and increase the threat to public order manifold, while posing difficulties in terms of designing appropriate regulation
