Iran Appoints First UAE Ambassador Since 2016

  • Iran appointed an ambassador to the United Arab Emirates for the first time since 2016, amid a realignment of relations between Gulf States and Iran.
  • The move came after the UAE in August 2022 moved to upgrade ties and said it was returning its ambassador to Tehran.
  • The UAE downgraded relations with Iran after Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran in January 2016 after Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran following Riyadh's execution of a prominent Shi'ite cleric.
  • Iran's newly appointed ambassador Reza Ameri had served as the Director General of the Iranian expatriates office in the Foreign Ministry.

Bandipur Completes 50 Years as a Project Tiger Reserve

  • Bandipur National Park, located in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, recently completed 50 years as a Project Tiger Reserve. The park, which spans an area of over 874 square kilometres, is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including tigers, elephants, Indian bison, and several species of birds and reptiles.
  • The park was initially established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1973, but it was later designated as a Project Tiger Reserve in 1974. Since then, it has played a vital role in the conservation of tigers and other endangered species in the region. Over the years, the park has become a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers from around the world.
  • One of the key factors contributing to the success of the Bandipur Tiger Reserve is its rich biodiversity. The park is home to several species of plants and animals that are found nowhere else in the world. Its dense forests, grasslands, and water bodies provide a perfect habitat for tigers, elephants, and other wildlife.

Karur Vysya Bank Ties Up with SBI Life to Market Insurance Schemes

  • Karur Vysya Bank Ltd. (KVB) entered into a pact with SBI Life Insurance to market the latter's insurance schemes through its branches.
  • KVB is a major player in the South with strong presence in urban, semi-urban and rural locations. SBI Life Insurance would leverage the strengths of the bank to market its schemes.
  • KVB offers the entire range of financial services through tie ups with leading service providers. In an attempt to offer a wider choice to its customers in the life insurance sphere, KVB inked an agreement with SBI Life.

Mukesh Ambani Becomes Richest Sports Owner in Forbes Billionaire 2023 List

  • Apart from regaining his spot as Asia's richest person in the Forbes Billionaire 2023 list, Mumbai Indians cricket team owner Mukesh Ambani also became the richest sports owner of all in Forbes billionaire 2023 list, released in April.
  • Ambani claimed the top spot from Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer.
  • As on March 10, 2023, when Forbes locked in net worth for the 2023 World's Billionaires list, Ambani net worth was $83.4 billion, compared to Ballmer's net worth of to $80.7 billion. Ballmer is now planet's second-wealthiest team owner.
  • Reliance purchased a franchise in the inaugural Women's Premier League and owns cricket teams in South Africa and UAE.
  • The following are the 5 richest sports team owners: Mukesh Ambani, Steve Ballmer, Rob Walton, François Pinault & family and Mark Mateschitz.

Dhoni, Yuvraj Get MCC Life Membership

  • The prestigious Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), housed at the iconic Lord's cricket ground, gave 'Life Membership' to former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh.
  • The other Indians to get the membership were Suresh Raina, Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami. The MCC announced naming 19 new honorary life members who represented eight Test-playing countries. The others who were honoured with the membership included Eoin Morgan and Kevin Pietersen from England, Pakistan's Mohammad Hafeez and South Africa's Dale Steyn.

India Elected to Top UN Statistical Body

  • In a significant victory, India was elected to the UN Statistical Commission for a four-year period in a competitive election.
  • India secured an overwhelming 46 out of 53 votes. A second candidate is yet to be decided between South Korea and China.
  • India was elected by secret ballot while Argentina, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Ukraine, the United Republic of Tanzania and the United States were elected by acclamation for a four-year term beginning January 1, 2024.
  • The United Nations Statistical Commission, established in 1947, is the apex body of the global statistical system that brings together the chief statisticians of member states around the world. It is the supreme decision-making body for international statistical activities, responsible for the establishment of statistical standards and the development of concepts and methods, including their implementation at national and international levels.
  • The commission consists of 24 member states of the United Nations elected on the basis of equal geographic distribution by the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
  • Five members are from African states, four from Asia-Pacific states, four from Eastern European states, four from Latin American and Caribbean states, and seven from Western European and other states.

India, Japan Agree to Diversify Cooperation

  • India and Japan agreed to diversify cooperation in new and emerging domains such as defence space and cyber technologies.
  • The move was announced after the seventh India-Japan Defence Policy Dialogue. It was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Japanese Vice-Minister of Defence for International Affairs Oka Masami.
  • A wide range of issues, including service-level exercises and engagements, regional security issues and cooperation in defence equipment and technology, were discussed during the meeting.

India, US to Begin Major Air Combat Exercise in Kalaikunda, West Bengal

  • The Indian Air Force is all set to kick off exercises with the US Air Force. The exercise will be conducted at the Kalaikunda air base in West Bengal. The exercise is known as the 'Cope India' exercise.
  • The exercise will be conducted from April 10 - April 21. It will further enhance the operational capability and interoperability between the two forces. Tokyo will significantly act as an observer in this exercise, it will witness "air combat and mobility elements" operating from multiple airbases like Kalaikunda, Panagarh, Agra and Hindon.
  • The Indian Air Force will be fielding the French-Origin Rafel fighter jets, Russian Sukhoi-Su 30 MKI and indigenous Tejas fighter jets as well as AEW&C (Airborne warning and control systems), C17 Globemaster III strategic airlift aircraft and IL-78 mid-air refuellers for the exercise. The US will deploy its F15 Strike Eagle jets.

Army to Induct Women in Artillery Regiment

  • The Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande announced that the Army is going to commission women officers in the Regiment of Artillery. The Army chief talked about the move during the Chief of Army Staff Annual Press Conference 2023 in January.
  • Artillery is a combat support arm of the Army and is the largest in size after the Infantry. The Artillery Regiments comprise various calibres of guns, surface to surface missiles, tracked guns, mortars and unmanned aerial platforms.
  • The regiments and Corps of the Army are divided into Arms and Services. The Arms include Infantry, Armoured Corps, Artillery, Engineers, Signals, Army Air Defence, Army Aviation Corps and Military Intelligence. With the latest government decision, women will now serve in all arms barring Infantry and Armoured Corps, which are considered to be fighting arms.
  • In addition, woman officers also serve in Services which include Army Service Corps (ASC), Army Ordnance Corps (AOC), Army Education Corps (AEC), Judge Advocate General Branch (JAG Br), Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), Army Medical Corps, Army Dental Corps and Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC). They also serve as nursing officers in Military Nursing Service.

  • The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is observed in the world every year on the 6th of April. The day marks a special occasion for the sport to be celebrated as a tool to bring social change and foster peace and understanding.
  • The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is a link to the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896. April 6 was declared as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 2013.

President Droupadi Murmu Confers Padma Awards in Second Civil Investiture Ceremony

  • President Droupadi Murmu conferred 55 Padma Awards for the year 2023, at the second Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She presented three Padma Vibhushan, five Padma Bhushan and 47 Padma Shri Awards.
  • Padma Vibhushan was given to ORS pioneer Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav posthumously.
  • Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis, saved millions of lives by promoting the use of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS).
  • Kolkata-based Dilip Mahalanabis was a paediatrician who started working on oral rehydration therapy in 1966. During his stint as a research scholar at Johns Hopkins University International Centre for Medical Research in the US, a team of doctors led by Mahalanabis developed the life-saving solution.
  • The President presented Padma Bhushan to philanthropist Sudha Murthy, theoretical physicist Prof Deepak Dhar, Kannada author Dr. S.L. Bhyrappa and spiritual leader Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji. Legendary singer Vani Jairam was given Padma Bhushan posthumously.
  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Home Minister Amit Shah, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur along with several other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
  • On the 22nd of last month, President Droupadi Murmu conferred 54 Padma Awards for the year 2023, at the first Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Ukrainian President Decorated with Poland's Top Award

  • The highest decoration of Poland, the Order of the White Eagle, was presented to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky by the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, during a meeting between the two leaders at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw.
  • The Order of the White Eagle is the Republic of Poland's oldest and most prestigious award. The Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland stated that Zelensky was given the award in acknowledgment of his contributions to enhancing ties between Poland and Ukraine, promoting security, and his unwavering commitment to protecting human rights.

Telangana Launches 'Cool Roof' Policy to Reduce Heat Impact on Buildings

  • The Telangana Government launched a Cool Roof Policy to reduce temperatures in Hyderabad and other urban areas in the state.
  • In the first year, the State government has set a target to 'cool roof' an area of 7.5 square kilometres, including 5 sq km in Hyderabad.
  • The policy is aimed at reducing heat island impact and heat stress in the state.
  • The urban heat islands phenomenon is gaining global attention as urban centres report 2-4 degree Celcius higher than rural areas, bearing the brunt of climate change. The government will make it mandatory for all constructions beyond 600 square yards to factor in a cool roof at the design stage.
  • Telangana being the third most urbanised state in the country with 48 per cent the population residing in the urban areas, there is a serious need to introduce cost-effective and climate-friendly cooling solutions to counter the urban heat island effect.

TN Govt, IIT Madras Tie Up to Connect Rural Students to Electronic Science

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin launched an initiative of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to connect 100,000 students studying in government schools in rural areas to electronic science.
  • As part of this endeavour, Stalin also distributed electronic kits developed by IIT Madras to government school students. Through this initiative, 252 government schools were earmarked for getting these electronic kits.
  • The institute has already trained two teachers from each school to train children. To support the teachers, India Literacy Project (ILP India), a non-profit organisation, has come forward to deploy teachers to support them in electronics teaching and provide science kits (at least 10 kits to each of the 252 schools) through IIT Madras.

New Book Titled "Gandhi: Siyasat Aur Sampradaiykta" Written by Piyush Babele

  • A new book in Hindi titled 'Gandhi: Siyasat aur Sampradaiykta' (Gandhi: Politics and Communalism) written by journalist-turned-author Piyush Babele, who currently heads the Madhya Pradesh Congress' media department, was released. He cites extracts from Dr. Ambedkar's book 'Pakistan or the Partition of India' and other sources, and claims to "contextualise the developments leading up to India's Partition in 1947 to bust the illusion spread by the Hindu right wing that Mahatma Gandhi was responsible for the Partition".
  • The formal launch of the book, published by the New Delhi-based Genuine Publications and Media Private Limited, took place in Indore at an event that former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath attended.

Delhi Breaks into League of Top Ten Busiest Airports for the First Time

  • Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport broke into the club of the world's 10 busiest airports in terms of the number of passengers handled, as per Airports Council International (ACI). The global trade association of airports ranked the Delhi Airport at the ninth spot for 2022, just ahead of Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport.
  • The airport was ranked as the 13th busiest for 2021 and 17th busiest for 2019. The Delhi airport is India's largest and is the only airport from South and Southeast Asia to feature in ACI's list of the 10 busiest airports.

Searches Conducted before June, 2015 Will Also Come under Amendment in Section 153C of Income Tax Act: Supreme Court

  • The Supreme Court delivered a landmark verdict as it ruled that searches conducted before June 1, 2015 would also come under the amendment brought by the Finance Act 2015 in Section 153C of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
  • The Bench of Justice M. R. Shah and Justice C. T. Ravikumar passed the orders on a bunch of 115 applications filed by the Revenue Department against the Delhi High Court order of 2014 in the PepsiCo India Ltd vs Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax case.
  • The High Court had given a restrictive meaning to the words used in Section 153C in the case PepsiCo India Ltd vs Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax.
  • The High Court had held that the word used in the Section could not be confused as "relates to" or "refers to". If photocopies of a document were seized from a person, it cannot be said that the document "belongs" to that person, as the originals were with someone else.
  • Modifying the High Court order, the Supreme Court ruled that Section 153C allowed the Revenue department to proceed against a party other than the person who was being searched, if incriminating articles against the 'other' person were found during the search.
