UN Appoints Indo-Canadian Coordinator for Scaling Up Nutrition Movement

  • United Nations Secretary-General Antnio Guterres announced the appointment of Indo-Canadian Afshan Khan as the coordinator of the 'Scaling Up Nutrition Movement'.
  • The Scaling Up Nutrition or SUN Movement is a country-driven initiative led by 65 nations and four Indian states united in their mission to end all forms of malnutrition by 2030.
  • Afshan Khan succeeded Gerda Verburg of the Netherlands.
  • Khan started her work for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Mozambique in 1989 and is currently serving as the regional director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
  • She also has extensive knowledge of international civil society organisations, having served as the CEO of Women for Women International.

UAE to Host First I2U2 Vice-ministerial Meeting

  • The United Arab Emirates hosted the first vice-ministerial meeting of the I2U2 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It was attended by senior officials from the four countries India, Israel, the United States and the UAE.
  • Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose W. Fernandez led the US delegation at the meeting in Abu Dhabi.
  • It was the first vice-ministerial meeting since the grouping was jointly announced by President Joe Biden, Israeli Prime Minister Lapid, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • During the forum, partner countries discussed opportunities to advance regional cooperation and investment opportunities to build partnerships that address some of the region's most pressing issues, including management of the energy crisis and food insecurity.

Indo-American Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy Announces 2024 Presidential Bid

  • Indian-American tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy launched his 2024 presidential bid with a promise to put merit back and end dependence on China, becoming the second community member to enter the Republican Party's presidential primary after Nikki Haley.
  • A second-generation Indian American, Ramaswamy founded Roivant Sciences in 2014 and led the largest biotech IPOs of 2015 and 2016, eventually culminating in successful clinical trials in multiple disease areas that led to FDA-approved products.
  • He founded other successful healthcare and technology companies, and in 2022, he launched Strive Asset Management, a new firm focused on restoring the voices of everyday citizens in the American economy by leading companies to focus on excellence over politics.

RBI Cancels Licence of MP-based Garha Co-operative Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled licence of Garha Co-operative Bank, Guna in Madhya Pradesh as the lender does not have adequate capital and earning prospects.
  • As per RBI, about 98.4 per cent of the depositors of the co-operative bank are entitled to receive full amount of their deposits from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).
  • Consequent to the cancellation of its licence, the bank is prohibited from conducting various activities, including acceptance of deposits and repayment of deposits with immediate effect.

Axis Bank Enables Cross-border Transaction in Real Time via UPI

  • Axis Bank enabled cross-border transactions in real-time using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) network. With this, the lender will act as the settlement bank for peer-to-peer (P2P) foreign inward remittance transactions initiated through PayNow by the Liquid Group in Singapore.
  • The cross-border UPI transaction initiative is a part of the joint initiative between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to develop cross-border payments between India and Singapore.

Samsung Electronics Ranks First in Global TV Market for 17 Years in Row

  • Samsung topped the global TV market last year (2022), making it the 17th year in a row that the company has ranked first in the TV industry.
  • This success can be credited to the company's dedication to high-quality viewing experiences and user-centred design.
  • The company sold 9.65 million QLED and Neo QLED televisions last year, pushing total sales to 35 million units since its launch in 2017.

India's 14-year-old Tilottama Sen Wins Bronze Medal in Women's 10m Air Rifle at ISSF World Cup

  • Indian teen Tilottama Sen won bronze medal in the women's 10m Air Rifle at ISSF World Cup at Cairo in Egypt. The 14-year-old Sen won the second bronze for India, fifth overall after ending the top eight ranking round with a score of 262. She missed out on the gold medal match by the narrowest possible margin of 0.1. Great Britain's Seonaid Mcintosh won the gold and Switzerland's Olympic Champion Nina Christen won the silver.

Vignesh and Visakh NR Become India's First Brothers to Become Grandmasters

  • After winning the 24th NordWest Cup 2023 at Bad Zwischenahn in Germany and defeating German IM Ilja Schneider, Indian chess player Vignesh N.R. became the 80th Grandmaster of India. The Chennai boy reached the milestone after crossing 2500 in the live ratings. Vignesh's elder brother Visakh N.R. had become India's 59th GM in 2019. Thus, Visakh and Vignesh became India's first brothers who are Grandmasters.

Upendra Kushwaha Quits JD(U), Launches New Political Party

  • Former Union Minister Upendra Kushwaha quit the Janata Dal (United), and floated his own political party, the Rashtriya Lok Janta Dal (RLJD). He was named the national president of the new party.
  • This is not the first time Kushwaha has parted ways with the JD(U) over differences with Kumar. He left the party in 2007 and 2013 as well and returned in 2009 and again in 2021. Earlier also, he formed a outfit, the Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), in 2013 but merged it with the JD(U) in 2021.

Minister of Power R. K. Singh Inaugurates 15th Edition of ELECRAMA 2023

  • At ELECRAMA 2023, the largest solo electrical exhibition in the world held at the India Expo Mart in Greater Noida, the Ministry of Power, Government of India displayed a number of advances in the energy sector.
  • Cabinet Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy R. K. Singh officially inaugurated the Power Pavilion, ELECRAMA 2023, Vivek Kumar Dewangan, Chairman & Managing Director, REC Limited, and other REC representatives were also present at the inauguration.
  • PSUs in the power sector, such as REC, PFC, NTPC, NHPC, PGCIL, SJVN, and THDC India Limited, participated in the Power Pavilion, which presented a variety of technologies and activities, including e-mobility, energy transition, green financing, RDSS, smart cities, smart grids, and smart metres.
  • 'Re-imagining the Future: Metamorphosis of the Power Sector in India' was the focus theme of the Power Pavilion, ELECRAMA 2023.

AAP's Shelly Oberoi New Mayor of Delhi

  • Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Shelly Oberoi won the mayoral election, days after the Supreme Court ordered that nominated members will play no role in the voting process. Oberoi received 150 votes as against BJP candidate Rekha Gupta's 116. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia congratulated Shelly Oberoi for winning the mayoral election.
  • AAP's Aaley Mohammed Iqbal was elected deputy mayor with 147 votes as against BJP's Kamal Bagri who secured 116 votes.

BEL Inks MoU with ADA for Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft Programme

  • Bharat Electronics signed an MoU with Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), DRDO, for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, during the Aero India 2023 in Bengaluru.
  • The AMCA is a fifth generation, multi-role, all-weather fighter aircraft designed with high survivability and stealth capability.
  • The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) was established under the Department of Defence Research and Development (DR&D), Ministry of Defence (MoD), Government of India, at Bangalore, in 1984 to oversee the development of the nation's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme.
  • The primary objective of ADA is the design and development of LCA to meet the Air Staff Requirements (ASR) specified by the Indian Air Force, and subsequently, the design and development of carrier borne naval variant and advance version of LCA (Mk1A, Mk2), Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) Aircraft, etc.

World Peace and Understanding Day

  • World Peace and Understanding Day is commemorated on February 23, every year. It is closely linked to Rotary International, a global service organisation that is dedicated to promoting peace and understanding worldwide. The observance of this day also marks the formation of the Rotary club and hence, Rotary International plays a significant role in promoting the day.
  • This day commemorates the anniversary of the formation of Rotary International. Attorney Paul Harris from Illinois organised a meeting with his three friends in a downtown office building in Chicago on February 23, 1905, where the idea of Rotary Club took shape for the first time. Together with Gustavus Loehr, Silvestor Schiele, and Hiram Shorey, Harris named the organisation as Rotary Club because their meeting locations would "Rotate". It was a professional group representing friendly smiles and small-town values.
  • They officially adopted the name Rotary International in 1922. This came into being after the four men encountered fellow professionals worldwide who also supported the club's vision of global peace and humanitarian values.
  • Over the years, World Peace and Understanding Day is marked to commemorate the founding of one of the largest philanthropic organisations in the world.

Sansad Ratna Award 2023

  • Thirteen members of Parliament (MP) were nominated for the Sansad Ratna Awards 2023. The Jury Committee of eminent Parliamentarians and civil society, chaired by Arjun Ram Meghwal (State Minister of Parliamentary Affairs) and Co-Chaired by T. S. Krishnamurthy (Former Chief Election Commissioner of India) has nominated eight MPs from Lok Sabha and five from Rajya Sabha for the Sansad Ratna Awards 2023. These nominations are based on cumulative performance in questions, private members' bills and members' debates from the beginning of the 17th Lok Sabha till the end of the Winter Session 2022.

University of Auckland, Tata Memorial Hospital Collaborate for Cancer Care

  • Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Mumbai and Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to engage in long-term cooperation in cancer care. Tata Memorial Hospital is the largest and the most renowned cancer care hospital and research centre in India.
  • The Auckland University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Professor Frank Bloomfield, accompanied by a delegation of academic staff, met with TMH representatives led by TMH director Dr. Rajendra Badwe and professor and medical oncologist, Dr. Vanita Noronha, to explore ways to enhance cancer care using digital health.
  • Initial projects envisaged for the partnership include a digital platform for clinical trials to track study-related activities for patients, investigators and regulators; a digital platform to make outpatient clinics more efficient; and a digital method to enhance prescription medicine safety, such as including connecting systems to ensure potential serious drug interactions are identified and flagged for the treating physician.

Minimum Age for Class 1 Admission to be 6 Years

  • As par reports, the Ministry of Education ordered all states and union territories to set the minimum age for admission into Class 1 as six years old.
  • The foundational stage, as defined by the new National Education Policy (NEP), consists of five years of learning for all children (between the ages of 3 and 8), including three years of preschool instruction and then Classes 1 and 2.

India-Guyana Air Service Agreement

  • The Union Cabinet approved the signing of an air services agreement between India and Guyana that will pave the way for flight services between the two countries. The agreement will come into force after the exchange of diplomatic notes between the parties confirming that each party has completed the necessary internal procedure for entry into force of the pact.
  • As per the 2012 census, Indians have a sizeable presence in Guyana and are the largest ethnic group comprising about 40 per cent of the population.
  • The agreement will provide the legal framework for air operations between two countries based on the principles of sovereignty of nations, nationality of carriers and reciprocity in terms of commercial opportunities for the designated airlines of each side.

Centre Extends Term of 22nd Law Commission till August 2024

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the extension of the term of the 22nd Law Commission of India up to August 31, 2024.
  • The tenure of the present 22nd Law Commission of India ended on February 20, 2023.
  • The Law Commission of India is a non-statutory body, constituted by the Government of India from time to time.
  • The Commission was originally constituted in 1955 and is re-constituted from time to time.
  • The various Law Commissions have been able to make important contributions towards the progressive development and codification of the Law of the country. The Law Commission has so far submitted 277 reports.
  • Ritu Raj Awasthi is an Indian Judge. He is currently serving as the Chairperson of 22nd Law Commission of India. He was Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court from October 11, 2021 to July 2, 2022.
