Indian-origin Meghana Pandit Named CEO of Oxford University Hospitals

  • Professor Meghana Pandit, a leading Indian-origin medic was appointed the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, one of the UK's largest teaching hospitals.
  • Pandit became the trust's first female chief and she is also the first person of Indian heritage to be appointed CEO of any National Health Service (NHS) trust in the Shelford Group, which represents some of the biggest teaching hospitals in the country.

UN Social Development Commission Elects Ruchira Kamboj its Chair for 62d Session

  • The UN Commission for Social Development elected India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj as its chair for the 62nd session.
  • Kamboj was elected chair by acclamation at the first meeting of the 62nd session of the UN Commission for Social Development at the UN headquarters in New York.
  • It also elected Jon Ivanovski from North Macedonia, Carla María Carlson from Dominican Republic and Thomas Lammar from Luxembourg as the Vice-Chairs of the 62nd session.

Largest Man-made Forest to Come up in MP

  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his cabinet colleagues planted saplings at a site where he said that the largest man-made forest in the state would come up.
  • The saplings were planted on a plot near the Raja Bhoj Airport to mark two years of Chouhan's daily plantation drive, which started in 2021 in Amarkantak.
  • "The biggest man made forest with 40,000 trees will be developed at this site and will be monitored by Shri Ram Astha Mission," said Chouhan, who also released a pictorial book about his daily plantation drive.

UN Ocean Treaty Talks Resume with Goal to Save Biodiversity

  • United Nations members gather in New York to resume efforts to forge a long-awaited and elusive treaty to safeguard the world's marine biodiversity.
  • Nearly two-thirds of the ocean lies outside national boundaries on the high seas where fragmented and unevenly enforced rules seek to minimise human impacts.
  • The goal of the U.N. meetings, running through March 3, is to produce a unified agreement for the conservation and sustainable use of those vast marine ecosystems.
  • The talks, formally called the Intergovernmental Conference on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, resume negotiations suspended last fall without agreement on a final treaty.
  • The aim of the talks is not to actually designate marine protected areas, but to establish a mechanism for doing so. The goal is to set up a new body that would accept submissions for specific marine protected areas.

UAE and India Launch the UAE Chapter of the Business Council to Boost Bilateral Trade & Investment

  • India-UAE signed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), the two sides established the UAE chapter of the UAE-India Business Council (UIBC-UC). The bilateral outfit was launched by UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Trade Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi. Other representatives present on the occasion were India's Ambassador to the UAE SunjaySudhir, Consul General of India in Dubai AmanPuri and founding members of the UBIC-UC.
  • The India-UAE CEPA aims to boost bilateral trade as both sides charted the path ahead in post-COVID recovery of national and regional trade. Faizal Kottikollon, chairman, KEF Holdings, who was appointed as the chairman of UIBC-UC said, "The Council's focus will be to identify significant strategic projects that can be undertaken by both countries. This includes investments in large infrastructure projects in India, advancements in manufacturing and technology, and providing Indian manufacturers with the ability to use the UAE as a base for their global expansion.

Rolls-Royce Marine North America and Kalyani Strategic Service Ink an Agreement

  • A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Rolls-Royce Marine North America and Kalyani Strategic Service Limited (KSSL), a 100% subsidiary of Bharat Forge, to investigate the possibility of KSSL serving as an in-country provider for propeller sales in the Indian market.
  • Under the agreement, KSSL will collaborate with Rolls-Royce for the design and development, licensed manufacturing, pre-sales and sales support, installation, commissioning, testing, and aftermarket services and support of the propulsion systems. This would facilitate the creation of a local supply chain ecosystem in India for Controllable Pitch Propellers and Shafting systems as required by the Indian Navy.

BoM Tops List of Public Sector Lenders in Loan Growth

  • Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) emerged as the top performer among state-owned lenders in terms of loan growth percentage during the third quarter of 2022-23, an analysis of the latest financial results of public sector banks showed.
  • The Pune-based lender recorded a 21.67 per cent increase in gross advances on a year-on-year basis.
  • The bank maintained the top slot in credit growth in percentage terms consistently for the past 10 quarters despite COVID-19 pressures.
  • BoM was followed by the Union Bank of India with 19.80 per cent growth. Country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) stood at fourth spot with 16.91 per cent rise in advances growth.

Chandrayaan 3 Undergoes Key Test Successfully

  • As per Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the 'Chandrayaan-3' lander successfully underwent the Electro-Magnetic Interference/Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMI/EMC) at the U. R. Rao Satellite Centre.
  • The EMI/EMC test is conducted for satellite missions to ensure the functionality of the satellite subsystems in the space environment and their compatibility with the expected electromagnetic levels.
  • This test is a major milestone in the realisation of the satellites.
  • According to the space agency, Chandrayaan-3 interplanetary mission has three major modules. They are - the Propulsion module, Lander module and Rover, and the mission's complexity calls for establishing radio-frequency (RF) communication links between the modules.

IAF Develops Indigenous 'Vayulink' Platform for Jammer-proof Communication

  • The Indian Air Force came out with an innovative solution that would help pilots to deal with bad weather and also provide them jammer-proof uninterrupted communication with the base station.
  • Known as 'Vayulink', the data link communication uses the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) that is also known as NAVIC, to send radio communication to the base station when the signals are low.
  • The IAF had put up a gallery on Vayulink to provide information about its platform at the India Pavilion at the Aero India 2023e.
  • 'Vayulink' is an ad-hoc data link communication system, which when installed in an aircraft, gives position of other aircrafts close by, encrypted traffic data over secured channel.
  • The Vayulink system also prevents aircraft collision, provides better combat teaming and helps plan real-time basis where multiple teams can get together and go towards the target coming from different areas.
  • The advantage of the system is when you are going into combat, it prevents fratricide. It means, you are able to know where our ground forces are present.

Saurashtra Bags Second Ranji Trophy Title

  • Left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat claimed a match haul of nine wickets, including 6/85 in the second innings, as Saurahstra thrashed Bengal by nine wickets in the Ranji Trophy final.
  • Having given away a big first innings lead of 230, Bengal, who were overnight 169/4 in their second essay, folded for 241, handing the visitors a mere 12 runs' target.
  • In reply, Saurashtra's Jay Gohil was out for a duck. Saurashtra, however, went past the target in 2.4 overs to wrap up the match with one day and two full sessions to spare.

Varun Bags 10m Air Pistol Bronze at Cairo World Cup

  • Teenager Varun Tomar bagged a bronze medal in the men's 10m air pistol competition, opening India's account at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol in Cairo. Tomar got the better of Sarabjot Singh in a shoot-off after both had tied for the third spot with a score of 250.6. Slovakia's Juraj Tuzinsky defeated Italy's Paolo Monna 17-15 to win gold.
  • This is Tomar's first senior ISSF World Cup stage medal.

India Secures Bronze in the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship 2023

  • In badminton, India's campaign at the Asia Mixed Team Championships came to an end. The P.V. Sindhu led side faced a 2-3 defeat against China in the semi-finals and settled for the bronze medal.
  • World No. 9 H. S. Prannoy and Sindhu lost their respective singles contest. Men's doubles pair Dhruv Kapila and Chirag Shetty won the contest to keep India in the game. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also won the Women's Doubles. However, Mixed Doubles pair Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto suffered defeat in straight games.

Manipur Hosts B20 Conference for Delegates from 23 Nations in Imphal

  • In Manipur, a B20 Conference for the delegates from G20 countries and other invited countries was held n Imphal. The exchange of ideas took place for economic growth.
  • Delegates from 23 nations consisting of 26 overseas business delegates and 24 diplomats participated in the conference. Interaction in medical tourism, ICT and other sectors were discussed during the conference.
  • The inaugural function was attended by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Union MoS of Commerce and Industries Som Prakash, Union MoS of External Affairs R. K. Ranjan and other senior government officials.
  • While welcoming the delegates, the Chief Minister highlighted the investment potential in different sectors of the state. He said the law and order situation has improved in the state while the connectivity has expanded.
  • It may be mentioned that the conference was a part of the official G20 Dialogue Forum for the global business community.
  • The Business 20 or B20 is a group that represents the private sector within the Group of 20 (G20) Forum. This organization was created to provide a platform for the business community to engage with the G20 and to offer recommendations on policies that can support global economic growth and development.

mPassport Police App: Police Verification for Passport in just 5 Days

  • The "mPassport Police App, developed by the consular, passport and visa division of the External Affairs Ministry for law enforcement agencies, was rolled out along with 350 tablets to personnel of the Special Branch of Delhi Police. These personnel are responsible for carrying out verification of antecedents of passport applicants. A new app developed by the external affairs ministry and rolled out in New Delhi is expected to cut the time for police verification of passport applicants to five days and reduce the scope for misuse of the process. The new digital services were launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the 76th Raising Day Parade of Delhi Police.
  • The passport application will be given a label by the police as per the status of passport and verification. There are 3 status types that a passport may receive, which are clear, adverse and incomplete.

Northern India's First Nuclear Plant to Come up in Haryana's Gorakhpur

  • Haryana may soon become home to Northern India's first nuclear plant as a 1,400 MW nuclear power plant is under construction near Gorakhpur village, Haryana.
  • As per Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy, Jitendra Singh, during Prime Minister NarendraModi's regime, one of the major achievements would be the installation of Nuclear Energy plants in other parts of the country, which were earlier confined mostly to the Southern and Western parts of India.
  • Gorakhpur Haryana AnuVidyutPariyojana's(GHAVP) having two units of 700 MWe capacity each of Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) indigenous design is under implementation near Gorakhpur village in Fatehabad district in Haryana. Till date, an amount of Rs. 4,906 crore has been spent out of total allocated funds 20,594 crore (Total Financial progress is 23.8% as on date).

South Africa Commences Joint Military Exercise with Russia-China

  • South Africa started a joint military exercise with Russia and China that some countries say it amounts to an endorsement of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
  • The US has also criticised the 10-day naval drills.
  • But South Africa's government says it remains neutral regarding the conflict, and that it routinely hosts similar drills with other countries, including France and the US.
  • The Mosi II naval exercises are taking place in the Indian Ocean, off the South African coast. The South African National Defence Force says 350 members of its armed forces will take part.
  • Russia announced sent its Admiral Gorshkov warship, which carries Zircon hypersonic missiles. These fly at nine times the speed of sound and have a range of 1,000 km (620 miles).

India, Uzbekistan 4th Joint Military Exercise 'DUSTLIK'

  • As part of a military-to-military exchange program between the Indian Army and Uzbekistan Army, the fourth edition of biennial training Exercise DUSTLIK (2023) started on February 20 and will conclude on March 5, 2023 in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.
  • The Indian contingent is being represented by the 14th Battalion, The GARHWAL RIFLES, part of Western Command in this bilateral exercise. The Uzbekistan Army is being represented by troops of the North Western Military District of Uzbekistan Army.
  • This joint exercise is aimed at enhancing military capability to undertake multi-domain operations in a Sub Conventional scenario under United Nations Mandate.

Balipa Narayana Bhagavatha Passes Away

  • Famous Yakshagana singer and screenwriter Balipa Narayan Bhagwat passed away at the age of 85. He had mastered a unique style of singing, due to which fans gave him the name of 'Balipa Style'. Rich in voice, Bhagwat has written more than 30 Yakshagana 'Prasanga' (scripts). He was well versed in over 100 Yakshagana episodes, which he composed by heart. He had served in the field of Yakshagana for about 60 years. He was the chief Bhagwat of Kateel Durgaparameshwari PrasaditaYakshaganaMandali (KateelMela).
  • Born on April 13, 1938 in Padre village of Kasargod district (Kerala), Bhagavata wrote several Yakshagana episodes. Bhagwat entered the Yakshagana field at the age of 13. He composed the five-day 'Devi Mahatme' episode, which was an important milestone in the history of Yakshagana literature. He was honoured with several other awards including the 'Karnataka Sri' award in 2002 for All India Kannada literature.

UNICEF India Appoints Ayushmann Khurrana as National Ambassador

  • UNICEF India appointed Bollywood star Ayushmann Khurrana as its National Ambassador. The film star who bagged a National Award shared the stage with seven children who are representatives of the Butterfly NGO and are doing exceptional work at the grassroots level to further access to education, and awareness on child rights and various social issues such as gender equality and menstruation.
  • The actor has been UNICEF's celebrity advocate over the last two years and had used his "powerful voice to stand with children and challenging harmful social norms and gender stereotypes", said UNICEF India Representative Cynthia McCaffrey.

Arunachal Pradesh Foundation Day

  • Northern States Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh celebrate their Foundation Day on February 20, since 1987. Arunachal Pradesh is the extreme northern part of the country, which is also known as the 'land of the rising sun'. The state at the edge of the Himalayas is proud to be called the land of dawn and lit mountains. Arunachal Pradesh became the 24th state of India.
  • Mizoram was declared as a separate UT in 1972 under the Northeast Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971. It became the 23rd state of India after the 53rd Amendment to the Indian Constitution, 1986. Mizoram, as well as the state of Arunachal Pradesh, came into existence on 20 February 1987.

Ramesh Krishnan Gets Rotary Club's Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Former India Davis Cup tennis player Ramesh Krishnan was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual awards function organised by the Rotary Club of Madras, T. Nagar (RCMT), in Chennai.
  • Tamil Nadu Tennis Association president and ace tennis player Vijay Amritraj presented the award and a citation to Mr. Krishnan. Mr. Vijay Amritraj was the recipient of the first award in 2010.
  • Golf player Uttam Singh Mundy was awarded for vocational excellence and K.V. Rangaswami, former Executive Director and Member of the Board of L&T, was honoured with the Living Legend Award.

  • Former Health Minister K.K. Shailajawas was selected for the 32nd Ramashramam Unneerikkutty Award, which is annually given to individuals who have made a mark in the fields of art, literature, culture, politics, or social service by Kozhikode-based Ramashramam Trust.
  • Ramashramam Trust chairman and writer M. Mukundan said that Shailaja was selected for the award based on her services as a minister during the times of Nipah outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, besides her services to the State in various other capacities.
  • Former Health Minister K.K. Shailaja has been selected for the 32nd Ramashramam Unneerikkutty Award, which is annually given to individuals who have made a mark in the fields of art, literature, culture, politics, or social service by Kozhikode-based Ramashramam Trust.
  • Ramashramam Trust chairman and writer M. Mukundansaid that Shailaja was selected for the award based on her services as a minister during the times of Nipah outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, besides her services to the State in various other capacities.

Devan and O. N. V. Kurup. Actor Indrans was the recipient of the award in 2022 when it resumed after a three-year gap. Ms. Shailaja is the fourth woman to win the award ever since its inception in 1985.

'All Quiet on the Western Front' Wins 7 trophies at BAFTA Awards

  • German movie 'All Quiet on the Western Front' was the big winner at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), winning seven trophies, including best film and best director.
  • Irish black comedy 'The Banshees of Inisherin' and rock biopic 'Elvis' took four awards at the BAFTAs, which are the UK's equivalent of Hollywood's Academy Awards.
  • Hosted by Richard E. Grant, the award ceremony was held at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Madhya Pradesh Approves New Excise Policy

  • The Madhya Pradesh cabinet approved the new excise policy under which 'ahatas', or areas for drinking attached to liquor outlets, and shop bars will be closed.
  • As per State Home Minister Narottam Mishra, the new excise policy is designed to discourage liquor consumption.
  • This came amid senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Uma Bharti's demand for a controlled liquor policy in MP.
  • Bharti, who started her campaign with the demand for total prohibition, has now been asking for regularisation of liquor sale in the state, where the Assembly polls are due this year-end.
  • The distance of liquor shops from educational institutions, girls' hostels and religious places is being increased from 50 metres to 100 metres.

IIT Roorkee Hosts its Annual Entrepreneurship Summit 2023-Reminiscing the Ethos 'Bharat'

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) celebrated 175 years of imparting technical education and contributing to the development of society. Commemorating the celebration, the Entrepreneurship Cell IIT Roorkee hosted its Annual Entrepreneurship Summit (E-Summit'23) from 17th - 19th February 2023.
  • The conclave celebrated 175 years of IIT Roorkee by inviting prestigious alumni, speakers, and start-ups from all over the globe to relay their values and knowledge to upcoming cohorts. This year's E-Summit saw a great congregation of entrepreneurs, speakers, investors, and students.
  • This year (2023), the theme for E-Summit'23 was Reminiscing the Ethos "Bharat". The theme of this edition of the summit brought out the inconspicuous culture of the old-age Golden Bharat, also known for its richness and innovation, to set forth the values that are pertinent to the upcoming generation.

Ujjain Breaks Ayodhya's Record with 18.8 Lakh Diyas on MahaShivaratri

  • The Ujjain city in Madhya Pradesh set a new Guinness world record by lighting 18.82 lakh diyas or earthen oil lamps.
  • About 20,000 volunteers took part in the event which was staged mainly across the banks of the Kshipra River.
  • Swapnil Dangarikar, Guinness World Records' adjudicator, said that the previous world record for the "largest display of oil lamps was set at Ayodhya during Diwali 2022 when 15.76 lakh lamps were lit. The record was now been broken in Ujjain with 18.82 lakh oil lamps being lit.
  • The diyas were to be lit for minimum five minutes which was done successfully. The event was organized by the local administration with the help of citizens' groups.

France to be Guest Country of Honour at Delhi Book Fair

  • France will be the guest country of honour at the New Delhi World Book Fair, which will open on February 25.
  • As India was the guest country of honour at Festival du Livre de Paris in April 2022, the reciprocal invitation was decided between PM Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron.
  • The 31st edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair (NDWBF), held for the past 50 years, is a major calendar event in the publishing world. NDWBF 2023 is scheduled from February 25 to March 5, 2023 in newly constructed Halls 2-5 GF at the centrally located Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The Fair is organised by the National Book Trust, India, an autonomous organisation of the Government of India under the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the India Trade Promotion Organisation.
  • Visitors to the book fair will have a chance to meet a delegation of sixteen authors from France, including the 2022 Nobel Laureate for Literature Annie Ernaux.
