Pakistan Appoints First Hindu Female Civil Servant

  • A doctor, said to be Pakistan's first Hindu female civil servant, was appointed as an assistant commissioner and administrator in Punjab province's Hassanabdal city. Sana Ramchand Gulwani, who grew up in Shikarpur city of Sindh province, graduated to become a doctor at her parents' wishes, before enrolling for the Federal Public Service Commission.
  • She became the first woman from the Hindu community to join the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS) after clearing the Central Superior Services (CSS) exam in 2020.

New Zealand Declares National Emergency as Cyclone Gabrielle Wreaks Havoc

  • New Zealand declared a national state of emergency for only the third time in its history as Cyclone Gabrielle caused widespread flooding, landslides and huge ocean swells, forcing evacuations and stranding people on roof tops.
  • Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said that the disaster is New Zealand's biggest weather event in a century.
  • As per reports, at least 225,000 people were without power.

T-Hub, Suzuki Motor Pact to Help Indian Start-ups Access Japan's Ecosystem

  • T-Hub, an innovation hub and ecosystem enabler partnered with Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), a leading corporation in the automobile sector to accelerate the growth of the Indian start-up ecosystem.
  • T-Hub said that with the collaborative partnership, both the firms aim to provide mentoring and support Indian entrepreneurs to access Japan's ecosystem.
  • Suzuki Innovation Center (SIC), which is an open innovation platform, will provide growth opportunities to T-Hub incubated start-ups. In addition, SIC provides an open platform for new connections and innovation between India and Japan among academia, industries, and start-ups.

HDFC Bank Begins Offline Payment Pilot under RBI Sandbox Facility

  • The country's largest private sector lender HDFC Bank is attempting to execute digital payments in an offline mode under a regulatory facility to test innovations.
  • Apart from executing transactions in no network areas, such a facility will be of help in urban pockets experiencing bad networks and also in aircraft.
  • It can be noted that there is a facility which helps users with feature phones undertake Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions.
  • HDFC Bank began the pilot in a partnership with Crunchfish, IDFC Bank and M2P Fintech under the RBI's regulatory sandbox programme after getting the nod in September 2022.
  • The lender will roll-out this service as part of a limited pilot for four months in more than 16 cities and towns across the country. The offline transaction amount would be limited to up to Rs 200 per transaction.

  • Home-grown financial technology firm Velocity launched India's first AI chatbot integrated with OpenAI's ChatGPT, called 'Lexi'.
  • Velocity integrated this latest advancement in artificial intelligence with its existing analytics tool, Velocity Insights.
  • Indian e-commerce brands that utilise Velocity Insights receive a daily business report on Whatsapp, which led the company also integrate ChatGPT in the same Whatsapp interface.
  • The integration of ChatGPT with Velocity Insights empowers e-commerce founders by providing them with AI-powered business insights in a conversational manner, freeing up time for critical business functions.

Fifthth Khelo India Youth Games Concludes in Bhopal

  • The Fifth Khelo India Youth Games 2022 concluded. Maharashtra secured the top position in the medal tally with 161 medals including 56 gold, 55 silver and 50 bronze medals.
  • Haryana grabbed second position by winning 128 medals including 41 gold, 32 silver and 55 bronze medals. Host Madhya Pradesh remained at third place with 96 medals including 39 gold, 30 silver and 27 bronze medals. Rajasthan and Delhi were in the fourth and fifth position, respectively.
  • Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Anurag Singh Thakur and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan were the chief guests of the concluding ceremony.

FIFA Club World Cup Final: Real Madrid Beats Al Hilal

  • Real Madrid won the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Club World Cup for a record-extending fifth time after beating Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal 5-3 in the final in Rabat, Morocco. Madrid last won the tournament in 2018. It also lifted the trophy in 2014, 2016 and 2017. Madrid also won three Intercontinental Cups in 1960, 1998 and 2002 — a match between European and South American champions, which merged with the Club World Cup in 2005.
  • The FIFA Club World Cup is an international men's association football competition organised by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, the sport's global governing body. The competition was first contested in 2000 as the FIFA Club World Championship.

WPL Auction: Smriti Mandhana Goes to Royal Challengers

  • India's star opener and vice-captain, Smriti Mandhana, emerged as the most expensive player in the first-ever auction for the Women's Premier League (WPL). Mandhana was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for Rs. 3.4 crore in an auction dominated by Indian players.
  • Overseas women players such as English cricketer Natalie Sciver and Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner came close to Mandhana's final price, having been picked up for Rs. 3.2 crore each by Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants, respectively.
  • The second costliest Indian player was all-rounder Deepti Sharma who was bought by UP Warriorz for Rs. 2.6 crore, while the captain of the Indian national squad, Harmanpreet Kaur, went to Mumbai Indians for Rs. 1.8 crore.

Annual Meeting of Members of the River Cities Alliance 'DHARA' Held in Pune

  • The annual meeting of the members of the River Cities Alliance (RCA) under the programme Driving Holistic Action for Urban Rivers (DHARA) organised the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) in association with National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) in Pune.
  • The Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat delivered the keynote address on the inaugural day, while the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Kaushal Kishore delivered the valedictory address on day two.
  • DHARA 2023 provided a platform for senior officials including commissioners, Addl commissioners, chief engineers and senior planners of the 95-member river cities in India to co-learn and discussed solutions for managing local water bodies.
  • The event has strong synergies with the Urban20 (U20) initiative under the ambit of India's G20 Presidency. One of the thrust areas of U20 is to promulgate urban water security.

Parliament Goes into Month-long Recess

  • The first part of the budget session of Rajya Sabha was adjourned till March 13 after continued disruptions by Opposition MPs who kept up their demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into allegations against the Adani Group.
  • Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who spoke about deliberate obstruction of proceedings, adjourned the House for the day after repeated appeals to bring order went unheeded and Opposition MPs raised slogans in support of their demand for a JPC and also revocation of the suspension of Congress MP Rajani Patil.

Seventh Operation Dost Flight for Earthquake-hit Syria and Turkey

  • The seventh Operation Dost flight departed for earthquake-hit Syria and Turkey. The Indian Air Force C17 carried relief material, medical aid, emergency and critical care medicines, medical equipment and consumables took off from Hindon Airbase in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad.
  • According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the flight carried more than 35 tons of relief material, of which over 23 tons headed for relief efforts in Syria, and around 12 tons to Turkey.
  • On February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake happened in Turkey and Syria.
  • The death toll across Turkey and Syria following earthquake reached 28,192.

Indian Navy Launches Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile (ACTCM) Barge

  • Boosting the 'Make in India' initiative, Indian Navy's Captain Prashant Saxena AWPS (Mbi) launched Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile (ACTCM) Barge, Yard 125 (LSAM 15). The Barge was launched at M/s Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd in Thane.
  • The ACTCM Barge is equipped with auxiliary systems developed by indigenous manufacturers, making it stand true to the 'Make in India' resolve of the Ministry of Defence.
  • The availability of ACTCM Barges will help Indian Navy fulfil its operational commitments by easing the transportation, embarkation, and discharge of supplies and ammunition onto the Navy ships at outer harbours and alongside jetties.

Maharashtra Bhushan Award for Social Worker Appasaheb Dharmadhikari

  • The state government named renowned social worker, preacher and reformer Dattatreya alias Appasaheb Dharmadikari for the Maharashtra Bhushan Award for the year 2022.
  • The Maharashtra Bhushan Award comprises a medal, a citation and Rs. 25 lakh, which will be conferred to Appasaheb at a function later in the year. Appasaheb was honoured with Padma Shri in 2017.

Amit Shah Presents President's Colour Award to Haryana Police

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the President's Colour Award to Haryana Police for their outstanding service to the nation.
  • The state police was bestowed with the prestigious President's Colour Award during a ceremonial function at the Haryana Police Academy, Madhuban in Karnal.
  • The President of India had approved this award for the Haryana Police for a good track record in commitment to professionalism and high rank in the service of humanity while keeping up its performance and integrity.
  • The "President's Colour" is bestowed on any armed forces or a police unit, in recognition of exceptional service rendered to the Nation, both in peace and in war.

Telangana Govt. to Enact Clinical Establishment Act

  • The Telangana government is planning to enact the Clinical Establishment Act for regulating private hospitals in the state. State Finance Minister Harish Rao made the announcement in the Assembly during his reply to a discussion on the health department.
  • The members raised concerns relating to private hospitals over irregularities and imposing hefty charges for treatment. Stating that there is no law to regulate private hospitals in the State, he said the government is planning to enact a new Act to regulate them.
  • He said that the aim is to improve facilities and provide corporate healthcare for the poor through the government hospitals.

Six Indian B-schools Find Place in FT MBA Global School Ranking

  • The Financial Times released the list of the global top 100 MBA institutes. Indian School of Business (ISB) and Indian Institutes of Management at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta Indore and Lucknow figured in the Financial Times (FT) Global MBA 2023 ranking. While ISB slipped to 39th rank from 32nd in 2023, IIMs at Indore and Lucknow secured their place in the chart. IIM Ahmedabad improved its position to 51 from 62 in 2022.
  • The ranking reflects a significant increase in the number of Indian business schools on the list over the past decade, with only two schools ranked in the top 100 in 2013.
  • US business schools dominate the top of the FT Global MBA Ranking in its 25th year. But for the first time, Columbia in New York took the top spot.
  • The top 10 B-schools in the world: Class of 2023 - Columbia Business School: The United States, Insead: France/Singapore, Iese Business School: Spain, Harvard Business School: The United States, Stanford Graduate School: The United States, SDA Bocconi School of Management: Italy, University of California at Berkeley: The United States, Cornell University: The United States, Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management: The United States and Yale School of Management: The United States.

IIT Madras Faculty Elected as International Member of US National Academy of Engineering

  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) faculty Prof R. I. Sujith was elected as an international member of the United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE). He was elected in recognition of his contributions to engineering 'for applications of dynamical systems theory to the understanding and control of instabilities in engineering systems.'
  • He is one of the 18 international members newly elected.
  • Academy membership honours those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."
  • Prof R. I. Sujith is the second Indian to be elected to the Aerospace Section of the National Academy of Engineering after B. N. Suresh.

National University of Singapore Business School Launches CSO Programme in India

  • The National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School in collaboration with education platform Emeritus launched its first executive education online programme, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO). The programme will start on March 28.
  • The nine-month CSO programme is developed for senior-level professionals with over 10 years of work experience who are looking to develop their strategic decision-making skills to address an ever-changing business climate.
  • The programme is split into three sections — 3 core courses with in-depth video lectures from distinguished NUS Business School faculty, along with live sessions with industry practitioners; learners can choose from three electives for their second programme.

Unlicensed Firearms: Supreme Court Directs Uttar Pradesh to File Affidavit on Possession, Usage

  • The Supreme Court took a suo motu cognizance of the possession and the use of unlicensed firearms in Uttar Pradesh.
  • It was while a Bench of Justice K. M. Joseph and Justice B. V. Nagarathna While was hearing a bail plea by a man who is accused of murdering a victim by firing a gun, that they took note of the misuse of unlicensed firearms.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government was directed by the Court for filing an affidavit on the number of cases that were registered for the possession and use of unlicensed firearms.
  • The court has asked for the state's stand on the same, along with the steps that have been taken to tackle this issue.
