Indian-Origin Banker Appointed Chair of Centre for Australia-India Relations

  • A veteran Indian-origin senior banking executive, Swati Dave, was named the inaugural Chair of the Advisory Board to the Centre for Australia-India Relations, a national platform to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
  • Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong, announcing Dave's appointment, said that the Centre, to be launched this year, will promote a stronger business and cultural understanding between Australia and India.
  • Dave brings valuable strategic, leadership and business experience to the role from her extensive senior executive and non-executive director roles across the public and private sectors.
  • Dave currently serves as Deputy Chair of Asia Society Australia and as a member of the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations Advisory Board.

Apsara Iyer First Indian-American Student to be Elected President of Harvard Law Review

  • A second year Indian-American student at Harvard Law School was elected president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review, becoming the first woman from the community to be named to the position in the prestigious publication's 136-year history.
  • Apsara Iyer was elected the 137th president of the Harvard Law Review, which was founded in 1887 and is among the oldest student-run legal scholarship publications.
  • Iyer's distinguished predecessors in the role include Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and former president Barack Obama.

Myanmar and Russia Sign Pact on Developing Nuclear Power

  • Myanmar's military-led government, working with Russia's state atomic energy company, inaugurated a nuclear power information centre as a step toward developing atomic power to fill energy shortages in the strife-torn Southeast Asian nation.
  • The head of the military government, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, met with Alexey Evgenievich Likhachev, director general of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corp., or Rosatom.
  • Myanmar hopes to build and operate a reactor under a preliminary agreement between Myanmar and Rosatom that was signed in 2015. The two sides signed memorandums of understanding in Moscow in July (2023) on nuclear energy, training and promotion of public understanding of atomic power.
  • The development is likely to ignite concerns that Myanmar's military would like to develop a nuclear weapons capability.

Millions Face Threat of Flooding from Glacial Lakes

  • According to a new study, up to 15 million people face risk of catastrophic flooding from glacial lakes which could burst their natural dams at any moment.
  • The study led by Newcastle University is the first global attempt to map potential hotspots for such floods.
  • As the climate warms, glaciers retreat and melt-water collects, forming lakes.
  • The impact of global warming on glacial lake floods is yet to be defined, but it has increased both the volume and number of glacial lakes worldwide.

Cashfree Payments Launches Automated Escrow Management Solution for Co-lending

  • Cashfree Payments, a leading payments and API banking solutions company, launched 'Co-lend', India's first fully automated escrow management solution for co-lending that facilitates instant disbursal with auto reconciliation and a dashboard for managing multiple partnerships.
  • Co-lend, developed in line with the digital lending guidelines announced by the Reserve Bank of India, requires no manual intervention, automatically notifies the loan management system, and eliminates reconciliation efforts.
  • Currently, in co-lending partnerships, the reconciliation of funding to the escrow accounts for disbursement and repayments is done manually, resulting in errors and delays.
  • 'Co-lend' provides a robust platform for co-lending originators and lenders, especially the ones sanctioning high volumes of loans, where real-time disbursement, repayment and reconciliation are primary requirements. Cashfree Payments has also partnered with Loan Management Service and Loan Origination Service providers as well as banks to enable a plug-n-play offering for lenders to manage all their co-lending and add new partners with ease.

K. Satyanarayana Raju New MD & CEO of Canara Bank

  • The Union Government appointed K. Satyanarayana Raju as Managing Director and CEO of Canara Bank, with immediate effect.
  • He replaced L. V. Prabhakar who demitted office on December 31, 2022.
  • Raju, who is a Physics Graduate, Post Graduate in Business Administration (Banking and Finance) and CAIIB (Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers), had earlier served Canara Bank as Executive Director since March 10, 2021.
  • He has a very rich and vast experience in all segments of banking including Branch Banking, Corporate Credit, Retail Credit, Agri Financing, Credit Monitoring, Credit Recovery, Compliance etc.

Uniper Signs Pact with Greenko to Source Green Ammonia from India

  • Germany-based Uniper signed an agreement with Greenko ZeroC to source green ammonia from the latter's Kakinada facility in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Under the MoU, the two companies intend to negotiate pricing, supply and tenure structure for a supply and purchase agreement for 2,50,000 tonnes per annum of green ammonia (GASPA) based on the heads of terms.
  • Uniper and Greenko ZeroC signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and heads of terms during the India Energy Week in Bengaluru in presence of Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Greenko CEO Anil Chalmalasetty, Uniper CCO Niek den Hollander and other senior company officials.

Smallest Main Belt Asteroid Detected by James Webb Telescope

  • European astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope detected a previously unknown asteroid about the size of Rome's Colosseum in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
  • The asteroid measuring between 300 and 650 feet (100 to 200 meters) in length is the smallest object observed to date using the telescope.
  • It was detected during calibration of the telescope's Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI), which operates in mid-infrared wavelengths.

Nepal Cricket Association Appoints Former Indian Cricketer Monty Desai as Head Coach

  • The Nepal Cricket Association appointed former Indian cricketer Monty Desai as the head coach of the Nepal national cricket team. He replaced another former Indian cricketer Manoj Prabhakar, who resigned from his post in December 2022. Nepal Cricket Association signed a two-year deal with Monty Desai. Monty was the head coach of teams like West Indies, Canada, UAE. Monty also served as the head coach of the Rajasthan Royals team in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Women's Premier League to be Held in Mumbai from 4th to 26th March

  • The much-awaited inaugural season of the Women's Premier League (WPL) will be played from March 4 to 26 in Mumbai.
  • The Brabourne Stadium and the D. Y. Patil Stadium will host all the matches with the tournament opener expected to be played between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians-owned franchise.

Vinesh Listed for Best Sportswoman Award

  • Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik, who staged a protest against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and accused him of sexual exploitation and intimidation, were among five athletes nominated for the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award.
  • The others nominees are weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, shuttler P. V. Sindhu and boxer Nikhat Zareen.
  • The nominees were selected by a panel of jury consisting of sports journalists and writers.
  • The winner will be chosen by a public vote, and the winner will be announced on March 5.

Agriculture Ministry Signs MoU with Digital Green

  • The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare signed an MoU in New Delhi with Digital Green under a public-private partnership framework to build a national-level digital extension platform.
  • The platform will host a digital library of curated multi-format multi-lingual content, helping extension workers access. It will also deliver curated content to farmers on time and up skill the vast network of extension workers for agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, livestock and rural livelihood missions through certified online courses.
  • Ministry's secretary Manoj Ahuja said that the proposed national digital platform will help make an extension system more efficient and effective by connecting farmers to the strong foundation of the digital agriculture ecosystem that is being built by the government.

NCS to be Primary Govt. Portal for Skilled and Unskilled Workers

  • The Centre decided that the National Career Service (NCS) portal, which brings together jobseekers, employers and trainers, will now be the primary government portal for both skilled and unskilled workers.
  • According to a document titled 'Implementation of Budget Announcements 2022-23', at a meeting under the joint chairmanship of skill and labour ministers in October 2022, it was also decided to subsume the Atmanirbhar Skilled Employee-Employer Mapping (ASEEM) portal under the Skill India portal.
  • The ASEEM portal acts as a directory that matches supply of the skilled workforce with the market demand. On the other hand, the Skill India portal accumulates the skills data of various central ministries, state governments, private training providers and corporates on a single platform.
  • The main objectives of NCS project are Enhancing career and employment opportunities, Counselling and guidance for career development, Enhancing quality of workforce and Focusing on inclusive growth initiatives

Rajnath Singh to Host Defence Ministers' Conclave at Aero India on Feb 14

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will host the 'Defence Ministers' Conclave' on February 14, on the sidelines of 14th edition of Aero India in Bengaluru.
  • The biennial airshow would be held at the Air Force Station in Yelahanka from February 13-17.
  • The conclave will see participation of Defence Ministers of foreign friendly countries, who would also be attending the Aero India.
  • The conclave would address aspects related to deepening cooperation for capacity building (through investments, R&D, joint venture, co-development, co-production and provisioning of defence equipment), training, space, AI and maritime security to grow together with the broad theme Shared Prosperity through Enhanced Engagements in Defence' (SPEED).
  • According to officials, Aero India has carved a niche for itself globally as one of the premier aerospace exhibitions with 13 successful editions organised in Bengaluru since 1996.

IIT Mandi Develops Technology that Make Stealth Vehicles Less Visible to Radar

  • In a major breakthrough that can have far-reaching consequences for the defence establishments, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi created an artificial structure or material that can evade detection of stealth vehicles and make less visible to the radar.
  • According to ITT Mandi, this material can absorb a wide range of radar frequencies or signals, irrespective of the direction from which the radar signal hits the target.

CRPF to Hire Psychologist for VIP Security Wing

  • The CRPF, which is mainly deployed for dealing with issues pertaining to internal security, has a special VIP Security (VS) wing in its establishment that has a strength of over 6,000 personnel and it currently guards more than 110 VVIPs, including prominent ones like Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and business tycoons Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, among others.
  • The CRPF issued an advertisement to engage a clinical psychologist to be based at a camp in Greater Noida near Delhi, which also serves as the garrison for its VIP security unit.
  • According to the terms of engagement issued by the CRPF, the candidate should essentially hold a Master's degree in clinical psychology or applied psychology from a recognised Indian or foreign university.

  • Indian e-commerce company, Myntra announces the appointment of Ranbir Kapoor, as its brand ambassador. Kapoor will be seen focusing on men's fashion wear, in Myntra's upcoming brand campaign, 'Be Extraordinary Everyday', slated to go live shortly.
  • The brand's existing ambassador, Kiara Advani, will continue to drive awareness about the women's western wear category. Kapoor joins Tamannaah Bhatia, and Vijay Deverakonda in representing the brand. Advani has been the brand's ambassador since 2020.

Queen Elizabeth Prize: Solar Team Wins Prestigious Engineering Award

  • Four pioneers behind the electricity-generating silicon solar cell won this year's (2023) Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.
  • Martin Green, Andrew Blakers, Jianhua Zhao and Aihua Wang developed so-called Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell, or Perc, technology.
  • This transformed the efficiency of solar panels and is now built into 90% of all installations worldwide.

This Indian-American Girl is in 'World's Brightest' Students List

  • Indian-American schoolgirl Natasha Perianayagam was named in the "world's brightest" students list for the second consecutive year by the US-based Johns Hopkins Center For Talented Youth, based on the results of above-grade-level tests of over 15,000 students across 76 countries.
  • Perianayagam is a student at Florence M Gaudineer Middle School, in New Jersey.
  • She also took the Johns Hopkins Center For Talented Youth (CTY) test in Spring 2021, when she was a Grade 5 student.

IIT Ropar Creates Unique Green Technology

  • IIT Ropar created an innovative green technology called an air nano bubble that can cut the amount of water used in the textile industry by up to 90%.
  • As per Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar, textile is one of the most water-intensive industries and there is an escalating need to address the problem of managing water usage in the textile industry associated with contamination of water.
  • According to experimental findings, the air nano bubble dispersed in water can cut water use and chemical dosage by 90-95 percent, saving 90 percent of energy usage in the process.

NCERT Selects ETS for Establishing India's First National Assessment Regulator

  • Educational Testing Service (ETS), the world's largest educational assessment organisation, announced that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) selected ETS to support the set-up of India's first national assessment regulator, PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development).
  • The PARAKH initiative will set norms, standards and guidelines for student assessment and evaluation for all recognized school boards in India. This will put a heightened focus on building quality assessments to better measure and increase knowledge and skill acquisition across India.

Virginity Test on Accused Women in Custody is Unconstitutional

  • The Delhi High Court held that the virginity test conducted on a female accused who is under the judicial or police custody is unconstitutional.
  • A single-judge bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said that the virginity test conducted on Sister Sephy, who was been convicted for the murder of Sister Abhaya in Kerala in the year 1992 was not in the spirit of constitution.
  • The bench added that whatever be the case the basic dignity of a person in custody should always be upheld.
  • Now that the criminal case is over, the Justice Sharma further granted liberty to Sister Sephy to seek compensation for violation of her human rights.

Centre Notifies Appointment of 5 Judges to Supreme Court of India

  • The Union government notified the appointment of five new judges to the Supreme Court. With their appointments, the number of judges in the Supreme Court will rise to 32. Currently, the Supreme Court of India has a sanctioned strength of thirty-four Judges and is presently functioning with twenty-seven Judges.
