China and Australia Trade Ministers Hold their First Meeting since 2019

  • Australian and Chinese trade ministers held their first bilateral meeting in three years as Australia urged China to lift official and unofficial barriers that are costing exporters 20 billion Australian dollars ($14 billion) a year.
  • China thawed its diplomatic freeze on Australia since Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's center-left Labor Party was elected in May for the first time in nine years.
  • Trade Minister Don Farrell said that he and his Chinese counterpart Wang Wentao had agreed to enhance dialogue at all levels as a pathway "towards the timely and full resumption of trade."

Turkey Earthquake: Historical ''Gaziantep Castle'' in South-eastern Turkey Collapses

  • The partial destruction of a Roman-era castle 'Gaziantep Castle' in the Turkish city of Gaziantep led to fears that two earthquakes that struck may have damaged other priceless monuments in Turkey and Syria, areas rich in cultural heritage.
  • Photos of Gaziantep Castle, considered one of the best-preserved citadels in Turkey, showed parts of its stone walls had cascaded down the side of the fort.
  • Syria and Turkey are considered cradles of human civilisation and home to some of the world's most precious relics of antiquity, boasting several UNESCO world heritage sites, including the ancient city of Aleppo, already ravaged by the Syrian civil war.

RIL, Ashok Leyland Unveil First Hydrogen Combustion Driven Heavy Duty Truck

  • Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries (RIL) and Ashok Leyland unveiled India's first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) powered heavy duty truck. The vehicle was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengaluru at the India Energy Week.
  • Ashok Leyland, the Indian flagship company of the Hinduja Group and India's leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, along with RIL, has been developing this unique technology over the past year and has been under test since August 2022. The Ashok Leyland H2-ICE heavy-duty truck range (19-35 Tonne) is powered by hydrogen, a renewable and clean energy source.

Indian Oil to Sign MoU with LanzaJet for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

  • Indian Oil Corp will sign a memorandum of understanding with sustainable fuel tech provider LanzaJet to produce sustainable aviation fuel at its Panipat refinery in northern India.
  • The company has a tie up with LanzaTech for converting waste gas to ethanol, and U.S.-based LanzaJet will be helping in upgrading ethanol to jet fuel.
  • By 2030, 2% of aviation fuel will be sustainable aviation fuel, Chairman S. M. Vaidya said on the sidelines of India Energy Week in Bengaluru.

ISRO Plans to Develop Astronaut Training Module with IIT Madras

  • ISRO and Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) plan to develop a training module for the Indian Spaceflight Programme using Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality / Mixed Reality (AR / VR / MR). ISRO aims to utilise the advanced technologies created at the newly-established eXperiential Technology Innovation Centre (XTIC) at IIT Madras to promote Research and Development (R&D) in the domain of Extended Reality.
  • A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between ISRO and IIT Madras for collaboration on the application of Extended Reality (XR) and other technologies in the Indian Human Spaceflight Program.

National Ice Hockey Championship: ITBP Wins 3rd Consecutive Time

  • The central ice hockey team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) won the 12th edition of the Ice Hockey Association of India (IHAI) National Ice Hockey Championship for men- 2023 organized in Leh, Ladakh. The ITBP team defeated the Ladakh Scouts by a score of 1-0 at the final. This was the third time in succession that the mountain trained Force won this premier national ice hockey championship.
  • Top teams of the country participated in this national tournament organized at the Ice Hockey Rink in Ladakh which is located in one of the highest altitude regions of the world. The ITBP is a pioneer in the adventure sports in the country and possesses an unparalleled record of mountaineering and allied sports in the country.

Australia's Aaron Finch Retires from International Cricket

  • Aaron Finch, who led Australia to their first ICC Men's T20 World Cup title in 2021, called time on his international cricket career.
  • Finch, Australian Men's T20 captain, announced his retirement from all international cricket, 12 years after making his debut.
  • Having retired from One-Day Internationals in September 2022 after playing 146 matches, Finch has now decided to step away from T20 Internationals after playing 103 matches, where he averaged 34.28 at a strike rate of 142.5. He also played five Test matches in 2018.
  • Finch first represented Australia in the U19 World Cup in 2006 -- alongside current internationals Usman Khawaja, Matthew Wade and David Warner.
  • Finch captained Australia in 76 T20 Internationals, more than any other men's player, leading the team to a maiden ICC Men's T20 World Cup title in 2021.

CAG's 6th SCO SAI Leaders' Meeting to Begin in Lucknow

  • The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) hosted the 6th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) SAI Leaders' Meeting in Lucknow.
  • Comptroller and Auditor General of India, Girish Chandra Murmu led the discussions on the theme 'Integrating Emerging Technologies in Audit'.
  • The heads of the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI) of SCO member countries participated in the meeting and the Governor of Uttar Pradesh inaugurated the event.
  • India currently holds the SCO presidency, which annually rotates among member countries. India's 2023 theme is 'Towards a SECURE SCO''.
  • The concept of SECURE stands for: 'S' for security for citizens, 'E' for economic development, 'C' for connectivity in the region, 'U' for unity, 'R' for respect of sovereignty and integrity, and 'E for environment protection.

Balasaheb Thorat Resigns as Maharashtra Congress Legislature Party Chief

  • Maharashtra Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat resigned as the state legislature party head, a day after his letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over friction with state unit chief Nana Patole came out.
  • Thorat, who represents the Sangamner constituency in Ahmednagar district, has sent his resignation to the party high command.
  • Thorat is a staunch Congress loyalist and has earlier served as the party's state president apart from holding many key ministerial portfolios.

Yuva Sangam Registration Portal Launched

  • The Yuva Sangam registration portal was launched in New Delhi. The Yuva Sangam is an initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build close ties between the youth of the Northeast Region and rest of India under the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.
  • Under the initiative over 20 thousand youth will travel across the country and gain a unique opportunity of cross-cultural learning.
  • On this occasion, Minister of DoNER, Culture and Tourism G. Kishan Reddy said that the Yuva Sangam program will work to connect the youth of my Northeast with the whole country.
  • He added that the program is an opportunity for the youth of the North East to explore the country. Mr. Reddy stressed that this Wide Cultural Exchange Program will also give an opportunity to the country's youth to celebrate the ancient culture and natural diversity of India. He said that out of one thousand, 300 students will be from the North East region.
  • Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju and other dignitaries also graced the event.

  • The Kerala Police arrested 2,507 gangsters under Operation AAG. It was launched throughout the state. The operation aimed on arresting the fugitives listed under the Kerala anti-Social Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA).   • Operation AAG is a 360-degree action against anti-social elements.

Popular Artist B.K.S. Verma Passes Away

  • Popular artist B. K. S. Verma passed awa. Known for his romantic style of art, he was also popular for his stage shows, where he painted to poetry rendering or a dance performance before an audience.
  • Verma was born in Karnur village, Attibele, on the outskirts of Bengaluru in 1949 in a family of artists. His father was a musician and his mother a painter.
  • He was trained in art by the legendary art teacher A.N. Subbarao.
  • He was awarded the Rajyotsava Award in 2001 and an honorary doctorate by Bangalore University in 2011.

Indian Music Composer, Ricky Kej Wins Third Grammy for 'Divine Tides'

  • Indian musician Ricky Kej won his third Grammy Award for the album 'Divine Tides' with rock-legend Stewart Copeland. The Bengaluru-based Indian music composer and producer won the award for 'Divine Tides' as he was nominated in the Best Immersive Audio Album category. The result was announced at the live ceremony held at the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles, USA.
  • This song was Kej's collaborative project with Copeland and they bagged another Grammy for Best New Age Album in 2022. The composer also won for his 2015 album, 'Winds of Samsara.'
  • Featuring artists from around the world, 'Divine Tides' is a tribute to the magnificence of our natural world. This critically acclaimed album contains 9 songs and 8 music videos that were filmed around the world from the exquisite beauty of the Indian Himalayas to the icy forests of Spain.

Dr. Peggy Mohan Bags 'Mathrubhumi Book of the Year' Award

  • Author Dr. Peggy Mohan bagged the 'Mathrubhumi Book of The Year' award at the fourth edition of Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL 2023). Her book 'Wanderers, Kings and Merchants,' portraying evolution of language as the outcome of migrations, won the award that carries Rs. 2 lakh as cash prize and a sculpture. Nobel Laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah presented the award to Mohan at the valedictory ceremony of the four-day MBIFL 2023.

CJI DY Chandrachud Inaugrates 10 Virtual High Courts in Orissa

  • The Chief Justice of India (CJI) D. Y. Chandrachud inaugurated ten new virtual High Courts in 10 different districts of Orissa.
  • CJI who addressed the event virtually said that very soon by March 2023, Orissa would be the very first State on India which would have virtual High Courts in all its districts.

Supreme Court Rejects Challenge to Appointment of Advocate Victoria Gowri as Additional Judge of Madras High Court

  • The Supreme Court rejected the two petitions that challenged the appointment of Advocate Victoria Gowri as Additional Judge of the Madras High Court, even as the latter was sworn-in to the post at the Madras High Court.
  • As the hearing was in progress, the swearing-in ceremony took place at the Madras High Court. Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Justice T. Raja, administered the oath of office and secrecy to Victoria Gowri and four other Advocates. These include Pillaipakkam Bahukutumbi Balaji, Kandhasami Kulandaivelu Ramakrishnan, Ramachandran Kalaimathi and K. Govindarajan Thilakavadi.
