Queen of the Skies: Boeing's Iconic jumbo B747 Flies off into History
The iconic jumbo B747, also called the 'Queen of the Skies', flew off into history when Boeing delivered the last such plane to Atlas Air from its Everett manufacturing facility in Washington.
The US aircraft maker had rolled out the first B747-100 plane on September 30, 1968, while the first 747 entered service on launch customer Pan Am Airlines' New YorkLondon route on January 21, 1970.
Atlas Air was the final 747 customer with an order of four 747-8 freighters, according to Boeing.
The last B747 was rolled out from the production facility on December 6 last year.
In the 55-year period, Boeing built a total of 1,574 B747 aircraft with four engines for over 100 customers, including Air India.
IMF Approves USD 4.7 Billion Loan for Bangladesh
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board approved a total of USD 4.7 billion loan for Bangladesh. It includes USD 3.3 billion under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and USD 1.4 billion under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) for Bangladesh.
The fund will be disbursed to Bangladesh over a period of 42 months to support Bangladesh's economic policies. Bangladesh is the first country in Asia to receive financing under the RSF. The approval of ECF/ EFF enables immediate disbursement of USD 476 million to the country.
Equatorial Guinea Appoints First Woman PM
Equatorial Guinea appointed Manuela Roka Botey as Prime Minister, becoming the first woman in the country to hold the position.
President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who ruled the country since 1979, made the announcement.
For the first time in Equatorial Guinea, a woman is appointed Prime Minister.
This is further proof of the commitment to gender equality and opportunities in the country.
Ms Rotey was previously the Education Minister and joined the government in 2020.
She replaced former premier Francisco Pascual Obama Asue.
Hibbertopterus lamsdelli: New species of Giant Sea Scorpion
Aquatic arthropods are invertebrates living in water with segmented bodies. They are extinct. A new species of aquatic arthropod was found in New Mexico. The new species is called Hibbertopterus lamsdelli. The species lives in an estuary. It lived 300 million years ago. The species found is a sea scorpion. It is giant and is extremely rare. They feed on large prey.
They have anterior appendages. The scorpion uses these appendages to explore its food and the substrate of its habitat.
Fossils of sea scorpions are rare. They are abundantly found in European and American sedimentary rock deposits. However, they are hard to explore.
Gautam Adani out of World's Top-10 Billionaires List
Gautam Adani has fallen out of the exclusive group of the top 10 wealthiest billionaires in the world after losing $36 billion of his wealth so far in January as a result of a collapse in firm share prices in the wake of the Hindenburg report.
According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the Indian tycoon who has his headquarters in Ahmedabad, is currently ranked 11th in terms of wealth with $84.4 billion in assets.
RBI Appoints V. Ramachandra as Member of Advisory Committee of SIFL, SEFL
The Reserve Bank appointed V. Ramachandra, former chief general manager of Canara Bank, as a member of the Advisory Committee of Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited (SIFL) and Srei Equipment Finance Limited (SEFL).
The Advisory Committee shall advise the administrator in the operations of SIFL and SEFL during the corporate insolvency resolution process.
The other two members of the committee are Venkat Nageshwar Chalasani, former deputy managing director, State Bank of India; and T. T. Srinivasaraghavan, former managing director, Sundaram Finance Limited.
IndiaMART and Four other Indian Markets Figure in US Notorious Markets List
IndiaMART, one of the largest Indian e-commerce websites, along with four physical marketplaces in Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Mumbai figured in the latest annual edition of the Notorious Markets List of the US.
Released by the US Trade Representative (USTR), the 2022 Notorious Markets List identified 39 online and 33 physical markets that are reported to engage in or facilitate substantial trademark counterfeiting or copyright piracy.
The Indian markets in the list were IndiaMART, Heera Panna in Mumbai, Kidderpore in Kolkata, Sadar Patrappa Road Market in Bengaluru, and Tank Road in Delhi.
The Notorious Markets List is an important tool that urges the private sector and trading partners to take action against these harmful practices.
Usman Khawaja Wins Shane Warne Men's Test Player of the Year award 2023
Australia opening batter Usman Khawaja capped his second comeback as a Test opener by claiming the inaugural Shane Warne Award as the men's Test player of the year.
Named in honour of the legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne, who passed away in March 2022, Khawaja polled 22 votes to win ahead of Marnus Labuschagne (20) and Steve Smith (16).
Anish Giri Wins Tata Steel Masters 2023
Dutch player Anish Giri, five times the runner-up in Wijk aan Zee, won the 85th edition of Tata Steel Masters after pouncing on a blunder by Richard Rapport while Jorden van Foreest took down long-term leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Magnus Carlsen beat Arjun Erigaisi on demand to catch Nodirbek in a tie for 2nd place, while Wesley So finished 4th.
The Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2023 was the 85th edition of the annual chess tournament held in Wijk aan Zee. It was held from 13 January to 29 January 2023. The field of 14 players in the Masters section included the numbers one and two of the FIDE World ranking, Magnus Carlsen and Ding Liren, as well as five teenage grandmasters.
UPSC Recommends Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi as Drugs Controller General of India
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recommended the name of Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi as the new Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). The UPSC had conducted interviews for the appointment of the DCGI.
In November 2022, V. G. Somani's term as DCGI was extended for three months. This was done for the second time, as he had also got an extension in the month of August 2022.
V. G. Somani was appointed as the Drugs Controller General of India in the month of August 2019.
DCGI heads the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), which is responsible for ensuring the quality of drug supply across the country. It also has the authority to give approval to new drugs and regulate clinical trials.
Assam Cabinet Nod for Floriculture Mission
Assam's cabinet approved a state floriculture mission with an initial investment of Rs. 150 crore, covering 20,000 farmers.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that in view of the huge demand for flowers in Assam, which is currently met with supply from West Bengal's capital Kolkata and even Thailand, a State Floriculture Mission has been approved.
Under it, the area of flower cultivation will be expanded from 2,200 hectares to 3,288 hectares within three years.
Visakhapatnam to be Capital of Andhra Pradesh
Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said that Andhra Pradesh's capital would be shifted to Visakhapatnam in a few months. The statement assumes significance in the wake of cases on the capital issue pending in the Supreme Court.
He made these remarks at a curtain-raiser programme for the Global Investors Summit, scheduled to be organised at Visakhapatnam in March.
'Trishakti Prahar': 10-day Exercise in Siliguri Corridor Concludes
A 10-day joint training exercise 'Trishakti Prahar' concluded in the strategically vital Siliguri corridor, in North Bengal.
The aim of the exercise was to practice battle preparedness of using latest weapons and equipment in a networked environment, involving all arms and services of the Army, the Indian Air Force and central armed police forces (CAPF).
As part of the exercise, swift mobilisation and deployment practices were carried out in various locations across North Bengal.
The exercise culminated with an integrated fire power exercise in Teesta Field Firing Ranges, near Siliguri.
Every year, India celebrates the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Day on February 1. The ICG Day is observed to honour and pay tribute to the Indian Coast Guard Force who play a critical role in protecting the Indian Coasts and enforcing regulations in the maritime zones of India.
This year (2023), India observed its 47th Raising Day on February 1, 2023. Indian Coast Guard is the 4th largest Coast Guard in the world with approximately 158 ships and 70 aircraft in its inventory.
The interim Indian Coast Guard was originally established on February 1, 1977, to prevent the sea-borne smuggling of goods that hampered India's domestic economy.
On August 18, 1978, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Day was officially established by the Parliament to be celebrated on February 1.

The Honour, announced at an awards ceremony, will be handed over to Singh in New Delhi by the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK.
The India-UK Achievers Honours by NISAU UK, in partnership with the British Council in India and the UK's Department for International Trade (DIT), celebrate the achievements of Indian students who studied at British universities and the Lifetime Achievement Honour is a nod to Singh's academic achievements at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, is the best college to pursue the Master of Business Administration (MBA) course in India, according to the latest ranking released by the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF). IIM Ahmedabad is followed by IIM Bengaluru and IIM Kolkata at second and third spots, respectively. The top three have remained unchanged since 2022.
The IIM, Lucknow, jumped one place to fourth rank from fifth in 2022.
The ranking was based on seven parameters: research, teaching-learning resources pedagogy, industry income and integration, placement performance, future orientation, external perception and international outlook, and placement strategies and support.
'Jeevan Vidya Shivir' Organized for Delhi Govt. School Teachers

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Names of Rajesh Bindal and Aravind Kumar for Elevation to SC
The Supreme Court Collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice K. M. Joseph, cleared the names of Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Aravind Kumar for elevation to the Supreme Court.
The resolution of the Collegium in regard to the appointment of Justice Rajesh Bindal, Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad was unanimous. However, in regard to the appointment of Justice Aravind Kumar, Chief Justice of the High Court of Gujarat, Justice K. M. Joseph expressed his reservations on the ground that his name can be considered at a later stage.
On 13 December 2022, the Collegium recommended five names for appointment as Judges of the Supreme Court, namely (i) Justice Pankaj Mithal, (ii) Justice Sanjay Karol, (iii) Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar, (iv) Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, and (v) Justice Manoj Misra. Their appointment is yet to be notified by the Government.
