South Africa to Host 15th BRICS Summit in August 2023

  • The 15th BRICS summit is all set to take place in South Africa's Durban in late August this year.
  • The Foreign Ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, and China met for the first time on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in 2006, kicking off BRIC cooperation. Later in April 2011, South Africa participated, for the first time, in the 3rd BRICS Summit held in Sanya, China.
  • The announcement was apparently made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Indian-American Raja J. Chari Nominated as US Air Force Brigadier General

  • Indian-American astronaut Raja Chari was nominated by US President Joe Biden for the post of Air Force brigadier general. The nomination has yet to be confirmed by the US Senate. The senate approves all senior civilian and military appointments, according to the US Defense Department. Brigadier General (BG) is a one-star General Officer rank of the United States Air Force.
  • Raja Chari is a US Air Force Colonel, who is 45 years old and earned a master's degree in aeronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
  • Chari is also graduated from the US Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Maryland.

Petr Pavel Becomes New President of Czech Republic

  • Petr Pavel, a former chairman of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) military committee, became the new President of the Czech Republic.
  • Pavel defeated billionaire Andrej Babis in a run-off vote and replaced controversial President Milos Zeman.
  • A former military general, Pavel got more than 58 per cent of the vote.

GRSE Signs Pact with Rolls Royce Solutions to Make Marine Diesel Engines

  • Defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rolls Royce Solutions of Germany for manufacture of high-quality marine diesel engines at the former's plant in Ranchi.
  • The Indian Navy's Chief of Material Vice Admiral Sandeep Naithani was present at the signing of the MoU.
  • The MoU deals with transfer of technology related to engine assembly, painting, parts sourcing and after-sales service for these engines that are to be assembled at GRSE's Diesel Engine Plant in Ranchi.
  • Under the agreement, GRSE and Rolls Royce Solutions will co-operate in the licence production and localisation of the technologically advanced MTU S4000 governmental marine engines.

Gautam Adani Slips to Seventh on Rich List after US Short Seller Report

  • India's Gautam Adani dropped four places to become the world's seventh-richest person as the companies in his empire lost a combined $48 billion in market capitalisation following a scathing report by a U.S. short-seller.
  • Hindenburg Research had raised concerns about high debt at the group and accused it of improper use of entities set up in offshore tax havens - a charge the group denied.
  • Adani has regularly been in the news in his home country due to the meteoric rise of his business empire and numerous deals.
  • According to Forbes, Gautam Adani's net worth dropped to $96.6 billion from $121 billion before the Hindenburg report.

NSE Emerges as the World's Largest Derivatives Bourse for 4th Year in a Row

  • The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) again emerged as the world's largest derivatives exchange in 2022, in terms of the number of contracts traded, according to the Futures Industry Association (FIA). This is the fourth consecutive year when the exchange earned the top spot.
  • In addition, the exchange was ranked third in the equity segment by the number of trades (electronic order book) in 2022, an advancement from the previous year when it was in the fourth position, as per statistics maintained by the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE).

England's Ben Stokes and Nat Sciver Win ICC Annual Awards

  • England Test captain Ben Stokes and England all-rounder Nat Sciver were among the winners in the International Cricket Council's annual awards.
  • All-rounder Stokes was named Men's Test Cricketer of the Year while Sciver won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year.
  • Sciver was also named Women's one-day international (ODI) Cricketer of the Year.

Hockey World Cup 2023: Germany Beat Belgium in the Final

  • Germany beat Belgium 5-4 in the penalty shootout and won the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2023 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, India. The scores were level at the end of regulation time at 3-3. This is Germany's third Hockey World Cup title after it in 2002 and 2006. With this, Germany levelled with Netherlands and Australia. Germany also became the fourth team to register a come-from-behind win in a World Cup final. From a 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 to lead and ultimately a shootout, they eventually became champions.

India Wind First Women's U-19 T20 World Cup

  • India won its maiden ICC title in women's cricket as a bunch of sprightly and talented teenagers lifted the inaugural U-19 World Cup with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over England.
  • The Shafali Verma-led India U-19 squad managed to do what their seniors could not do by clearing the final hurdle in a global event.

Third Interpol Young Global Police Leaders Programme held in New Delhi

  • The third edition of the Interpol young global police leaders programme was held in in Delhi with the theme 'Trust' which aims at building trust between public-police as well as trust factors between international police forces in the era of technology.
  • There were 60 participants from 44 countries. A delegation of Interpol young global police leaders programme visited National Police Memorial and paid homage to the fallen policemen.
  • The event brings together young police leaders holding vital assignments in their respective countries and helps them develop an international perspective and understanding. It seeks to empower the next generation of International Police leaders through mentoring from experienced officers.
  • The Interpol Young Global Police Leaders Program (YGPLP) will end on February 2.

PM Modi Releases Special Rs. 75 Coins

  • PM Modi released special Rs. 75 Coins on the occasion of completion of 75 years of National Cadet Corps (NCC) at the Delhi NCC event. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of India Lt. Gen Anil Chauhan were also present at the Delhi NCC event.
  • At the Cariappa Ground in Delhi, the NCC rally was conducted to mark the 75th anniversary. Notably, 196 officers and cadets from 19 other nations took part in the demonstration as well.

Construction of "Bajrang Setu" to be Completed by July 2023

  • In Uttarakhand, Asia's second and country's first cable suspension bridge "Bajrang Setu" is being constructed at Rishikesh. This bridge is coming up next to the famous 90-year-old Laxman Jhula.
  • Laxman Jhula is closed since last year when it was found that it wasn't safe for pedestrians anymore. However, it will not be removed and will be preserved as a heritage.
  • Superintending Engineer of Public Works Department NPS Singh said that the construction of the new bridge would cost Rs. 67 crore and all efforts are made to complete it by July 2023.

Made-In-India Weapon Systems on Display at Army's 'Exercise Topchi'

  • Indigenously manufactured weapon systems were the highlight of the Indian Army's 'Exercise Topchi', an annual firepower demonstration and training exercise conducted at the School of Artillery in Devlali in Maharashtra.
  • The mega event took place under the stewardship of Lt Gen S Harimohan Iyer, AVSM, Commandant School of Artillery and Col Commandant Regiment of Artillery.
  • The event showed the capability of the Indian artillery.
  • This edition of "Exercise Topchi" showcased the integrated employment of firepower and surveillance assets to include guns, mortars, rockets, drones, and aviation assets.
  • The event was witnessed by student officers of Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Defence Services Technical Staff Course, Pune, Nepal Army Command & Staff College and civil administration officers.

Odisha Minister Naba Kishore Dies

  • Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Naba Kishore Das died after battling bullet injuries for several hours after being shot at by a policeman.
  • Das was shot in the chest at Brajrajnagar town around 1 pm when he was on his way to attend a programme in Jharsuguda district.
  • The minister, a strongman in the mining hub of Jharsuguda, had switched over to the BJD from the Congress ahead of 2019 elections. He is known to have business interests in coal mining, transportation and hospitality sectors.

Uttar Pradesh Govt. Launches Campaign to Empower Underprivileged Girls

  • The Uttar Pradesh government launched a campaign to empower girls from the underprivileged class.
  • The Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan will work under the Aarohini Initiative Training Programme for the safety and security of girls in 746 Kasturba Gandhi Residential Girls Schools in the state.
  • Director General of School Education Vijay Kiran Anand said that the main objective of the Aarohini programme, which will be implemented in three phases, is gender sensitisation.

Madhya Pradesh CM Launches Ladli Bahina Scheme

  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that his government will launch a new scheme 'Ladli Bahina' to provide Rs. 1,000 per month to women from financially poor background in the state, where the Assembly polls are due this year-end.
  • A sum of Rs. 60,000 crore will be spent on this scheme in five years.
  • As per Chouhan, poor women from all sections can benefit from this scheme even if they have been receiving benefits of other welfare programmes.

  • The G20 seminar will be held at IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP) as part of 'Sherpa Track – 1st Education Working Group Meeting' in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, from January 31, 2023 to February 2, 2023.
  • The Education Working Group, under India's Presidency of G20, has a key objective to identify areas/themes to promote possible research and academic collaboration among educational institutions in G20 member countries.

SCO Film Festival Begins in Mumbai

  • Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that the lines have blurred between regional and international cinema as there are no boundaries for good content.
  • He was speaking in Mumbai, which is hosting the first edition of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Film Festival.
  • Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, and Hema Malini attended the inaugural ceremony of the five-day festival, at NCPA in South Mumbai and will see screening of 58 movies from SCO member-countries.
  • Last year, India took over the rotating presidency of the SCO, a regional grouping of eight Eurasian nations. The festival has been organized to mark India's Presidency of SCO.
  • Launched in Shanghai in June 2001, the SCO has eight full members – China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan.

Patiala Military Literature Festival Concludes

  • On the concluding day of Patiala's first Military Literature Festival, GOC of Black Elephant Division of Indian Army Major General Puneet Ahuja along with other dignitaries paid tributes to the martyrs by offering floral garlands at the War Memorial complex Cenotaph of Patiala State Forces and Black Elephant situated in YPS Chowk.
  • Later, the Brave Heart Ride Motorcycle Rally of about 140 bike riders gathered at the Polo Ground and was flagged off by Ahuja. The rally completed a circuit of about 26 km in Patiala city and ended at the place of the Military Literature Festival at Khalsa College.

India's First Glass Igloo Restaurant in Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg

  • A glass igloo restaurant in the middle of the snow-covered mountains in Gulmarg became the centre of attraction for tourists in the hill station in Kashmir.
  • This unique glass igloo restaurant was developed by Kolahoi Green Heights, a hotel in Gulmarg. The hotel claims it is the first glass igloo restaurant in the valley. It is worth noting that earlier they had built the valley's first snow-covered restaurant.
  • According to Hotel Manager Hamid Masoudi, it has always taken unique measures to make Gulmarg attractive to tourists.
  • This concept was taken from Finland.
