  • Canada appointed its first special representative on combatting Islamophobia, a position created following several recent attacks on Muslims in the country.
  • Journalist and activist Amira Elghawaby filled the post to serve as a champion, advisor, expert and representative to support and enhance the federal government's efforts in the fight against Islamophobia, systemic racism, racial discrimination and religious intolerance.

South Africa in Deal to Send Dozens of Cheetahs to India

  • In an attempt to increase the population of Cheetahs, India struck a deal with South Africa wherein the latter will send dozens of African cheetahs to India over the next decade.
  • Notably, the first batch of eight Cheetahs was brought in from Namibia in September 2022 and were released at Kuno National Park by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was the first time wild cheetahs were moved across continents to be released.
  • These cheetahs came back to India after the species was declared extinct in the country in 1952.
  • As per reports, an initial batch of 12 cheetahs is scheduled to be flown from South Africa to India in February 2023. The plan is to translocate a further 12 annually for the next eight to 10 years.

Kishore Biyani Resigns as Executive Chairman and Director of Future Retail

  • Kishore Biyani resigned as executive chairman and director of Future Retail and his resignation was placed before the Committee of Creditors, as per the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.
  • Troubles began mounting for Future Retail because of high debt which was compounded by its operations taking a hit due to the Covid-19 induced lockdowns, which impacted its sales and its net worth.

Nomura Hires Mahesh Natarajan to Head India ECM Business

  • Nomura Holdings hired Mahesh Natarajan to head its equity capital markets business in India.
  • Natarajan is due to join the Japanese firm's Indian unit in the coming months.
  • Natarajan currently heads the equity capital markets, including initial public offerings and block deals, for Nomura's domestic rival ICICI Securities and has spent nearly 17 years with the firm. He worked with Morgan Stanley earlier.
  • He replaced MangeshGhogre, who headed Nomura's equity capital market business in India until last month.

First Ever White Card Shown in a Football Match

  • Most football fans must be aware of the red and yellow cards in football. But history was scripted in Portugal when a white card was shown for the first time in a women's cup quarter-final match between Benfica and Sporting Lisbon.
  • The card was initiated by Portugal to try and improve ethical value in the sport. It is in contrast with yellow and red cards which are used to discipline players for misconduct. The exact purpose and consequence of the card are yet to be announced.
  • During the match, a fan fell ill in the stands. The medical teams from both the teams rushed to the spot and the referee Catarina Campos showed the white card to them. It received a positive reception from the crowd at the Estadio da Luz, with many cheering and applauding the decision.
  • The card was shown as an appreciation to the medical teams for their spirit.

ICC Announces All-female Panel of Match Officials for Women's T20 World Cup

  • In a significant first for world cricket, the ICC named an all-female panel of match officials, including the Indian trio of G. S. Lakshmi, Vrinda Rathi and Janani Narayanan, for the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa.
  • Three match referees and 10 umpires make up the 13-woman team in what is a landmark moment and is in part of the ICC's strategic ambition of advancing the involvement and visibility of women in cricket. The panel includes seven first timers, and the announcement came after a constant rise in the number of women officiating in global tournaments.

Visakhapatnam Railway Station Receives 'Green Railway Station Certification' with Highest Platinum Rating

  • East Coast Railways' Visakhapatnam railway station received the prestigious 'Green Railway Station Certification' with the highest Platinum rating. The certificate was awarded by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for adopting green concepts. It secured 82 out of 100 points in six environmental categories.
  • Visakhapatnam Railway Station falls under the Waltair division of the East Coast Railway. The railway station performed well in various categories such as – sustainable facilities, health, hygiene, energy and water efficiency, smart green initiatives, innovation, and development.
  • On the basis of the survey conducted by the IGBC, the following steps were undertaken: setting up of solar panels to conserve power, installation of LED Lightings, providing well-developed passenger amenities, segregation of waste materials by building MRF shed, and operationalization of 500KLD STP for station and colony water.

Government Extends Tenure of Sangeeta Verma as CCI's Acting Chairperson

  • The government extended the tenure of SangeetaVerma as the acting Chairperson of the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
  • Ms. Vermawas the acting Chairperson of the anti-trust regulator since October 2022 after Ashok Kumar Gupta demitted office as the full-time Chairperson.
  • As per reports, Ms. Verma shall act as the acting Chairperson "until the date on which new Chairperson is appointed or till any further orders in this regard.

Soren Becomes First J'khand CM to Visit Former Maoist Hotbed 'Budha Pahad'

  • Hemant Soren became the first Jharkhand Chief Minister to visit the Budha Pahad' once a Maoist hotbed that was freed from the red rebels' control by security forces after over three decades situated near the border with Chhattisgarh.
  • He is expected launched a slew of welfare schemes in Budha Pahad', located around 150 km from state capital Ranchi, along the Latehar and Garhwa districts.
  • Security forces managed to free the area from the grip of Maoists through three special operations that were launched since the beginning of April 2022.
