Brazil and Argentina Discuss Plans to Develop Common Currency

  • Brazil and Argentina aim for greater economic integration, including the development of a common currency, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Argentine leader Alberto Fernandez said in a joint article they penned.
  • Both the countries intend to overcome the barriers to their exchanges, simplify and modernise the rules and encourage the use of local currencies.
  • The idea of a common currency was raised originally in an article written last year (2022) by Fernando Haddad and Gabriel Galipolo, now Brazil's Finance Minister and his Executive Secretary, respectively, and was mentioned by Lula during the campaign.

Bangladesh to Hold Presidential Election by February 23

  • Bangladesh will hold the presidential election by February 23, the country's poll body announced.
  • The announcement was made by the Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md Jahangir Alam.
  • As per Md Jahangir Alam, incumbent President Abdul Hamid will not to be re-elected for another term, as the country's Constitution allows only a maximum two-term limit consisting of five years each.
  • Hamid's tenure will expire on April 24.
  • In Bangladesh, the President is elected by an indirect election by MPs.

Chandigarh Gets North India's Largest Floating Solar Power Project

  • Chandigarh UT Administrator Banwari Lal Purohit inaugurated northern India's largest floating solar power project of 2000kWp worth Rs. 11.70 crore at waterworks, Sector 39.
  • The inauguration was held in the presence of MP Kirron Kher. He also inaugurated a 500kWp floating solar project with fountains at Dhanas Lake. Adviser Dharam Pal, director (environment) Debendra Dalai and Mayor Anoop Gupta were present on the occasion.
  • These projects were designed and executed by CREST (Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society) and will generate a minimum of 35 lakh units (kWh) of solar energy per year with 20% module efficiency.

Manish Gunwani to Replace Anoop Bhaskar as CIO-Equities at IDFC MF

  • Manish Gunwani is set to join IDFC Mutual Fund (MF) as the chief investment officer (CIO)- Equities. Gunwani, who left Nippon India MF in November 2022, will replace Anoop Bhaskar, who is moving out of IDFC MF.
  • Gunwani joined Nippon India MF in 2017. Before this, he served as Deputy CIO-Equity at ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund. At Nippon, he was managing schemes like Nippon India Flexi Cap Fund, Nippon India Growth Fund and Nippon India Balanced Advantage Fund.
  • Bhaskar has been in the MF industry for over 27 years. He joined IDFC AMC in February 2016. Prior to joining IDFC AMC, he was associated with UTI MF as Head of Equity.

Tata Motors and ICICI Bank Tie up to Offer Financing Solutions to its EV Dealers

  • Tata Motors partnered with ICICI Bank to offer financing solutions to its authorised passenger electric vehicle dealers.
  • Under the partnership, ICICI Bank will provide inventory funding to the authorised passenger EV dealers in addition to the bank's funding to dealers for diesel and petrol models.
  • Through this partnership the EV dealers can avail flexible repayment tenures.

JUICE Space Mission of Europe

  • The European Union is to launch the JUICE Spacecraft in April 2023. The spacecraft is to explore the moons of Jupiter. Specifically, the mission is to study the three major moons of Jupiter namely Ganymede, Europe, and Callisto. Out of the 80 moons of the planet, these three were selected for their large oceans. The satellite is to be launched from French Guiana. Ariane 5 will carry the satellite. JUICE is the first satellite from the earth to enter the orbit of Ganymede.
  • UICE stands for Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer. The satellite was developed by Germany and tested by France.
  • The main objective of the mission is to study the microbial life on the icy moons of the planet.
  • It will also study the polar regions and the magnetosphere of the planet.

Mary Kom to Lead Oversight Committee to Probe against WFI President

  • Boxing great MC Mary Kom was selected to lead a five-member Oversight Committee that will probe sexual harassment charges against Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
  • The government-appointed Committee will also run the day-to-day affairs of WFI for the next one month.
  • The other members of the panel are Olympic medallist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former badminton player and Mission Olympic Cell member Trupti Murgunde, ex-TOPS CEO Rajagopalan and former SAI executive director Radhika Sreeman.
  • Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had decided to form the Committee following a three-day sit-in protest by some of the country's top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya against WFI and Singh.

Lt Governor R. K. Mathur Launches ULPIN in Ladakh Calls it a 'Game Changer'

  • Lieutenant Governor R. K. Mathur launched the Unique Land Parcel Identification Number (ULPIN) in the Union Territory, with both hill councils of Kargil and Leh welcoming the initiative. The 14-digit ULPIN would help in the digitization of land records and also reach a conclusive land titling.
  • Terming ULPIN as a "game changer" and the next step in 'SVAMITVA' for digitisation and computerisation of land revenue records, R. K. Mathur informed the importance of 100 per cent coverage of land revenue records in Ladakh and completion of the exercise at the earliest.
  • ULPIN would prove beneficial in numerous ways, including settling and expediting land-related disputes in court and addressing legacy issues such as putting a check on any unwanted change in land revenue records. He also stated that the scheme would also prove beneficial to farmers in availing loans from banks and also using drones to spray insecticides and pesticides on the registered lands of the farmers.

EC Hosts International Meet on Use of Tech, Election Integrity

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) hosted a two-day international conference for election management officials from 17 countries with the focus on "use of technology and elections integrity".
  • The conference was the second one the ECI hosted under the US-led Summit for Democracy platform, in which the ECI was selected to lead the cohort on elections integrity.
  • The first conference was in October 2022 where 50 representatives from 11 countries participated.
  • The conference came at a time the ECI proposed the use of remote voting machines to enable domestic migrants to vote, a suggestion that most political parties opposed at a meeting.
  • The two-day conference was inaugurated by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar. Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey chaired the concluding session and Election Commissioner Arun Goel chaired the first technical session.

Indian Air Force to Conduct Exercise 'PRALAY' in North-eastern Part of India

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to conduct Exercise PRALAY from February 1 to 5 in the north-eastern sector of India amid the unresolved contention with China about differing perceptions regarding the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between the two nations. The exercise will involve major air bases of the IAF in the north-east in addition to the newly deployed drone squadron.
  • Exercise PRALAY will include major combat assets including the Rafale fighter in addition to Su-30 fighter jets and other transport aircraft.

International Day of Education

  • The International Day of Education is annually celebrated on January 24. This year (2023) marked the fifth year of celebration.
  • January 24 was declared the International Day of Education by a resolution that was passed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 3, 2018. Thereafter, on January 24 2019 the first International Day of Education was celebrated.
  • The theme for International Day of Education 2023 was 'invest in people, prioritise education'.

National Girl Child Day

  • On January 24, India celebrates National Girl Child Day. This day was established in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The goal of National Girl Child Day is to highlight the prejudice and injustice that girl children face. This day also encourages awareness of women's rights in our country.
  • According to the women and child development ministry, National Girl Child Day is meant to create awareness about the rights of a girl, support the nation's girl children, eliminate gender biases, and emphasise the importance of education, health, and nutrition. The national holiday is observed nationwide by holding a variety of events to honour girls.

Raghav Chadha Conferred with 'India UK Outstanding Achievers Honour'

  • Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha received the "Outstanding Achiever" honour at the prestigious India UK Achievers Honours in London.
  • Raghav was selected as the "Outstanding Achiever" for the "Government and Politics" category, which recognises individuals who are demonstrating excellence in how democracy and justice are experienced and how challenging societal problems are tackled together for the good of people and the planet.
  • The India UK Achievers Honours celebrate the educational and professional achievements of young Indians who have studied in the UK, marking India's 75th independence anniversary. Chadha studied at the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE), after which he set up a boutique wealth management firm in London. The award ceremony was organised by the NISAU UK in partnership with the British Council in India, supported by the UK Government Department for International Trade and the UK Higher Education sector. This is the second international recognition for Chadha within a year. Last year (2022), he was honoured as a Young Global Leader by the most coveted World Economic Forum.

Banaras Hindu University Collaborates with Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence

  • Banaras Hindu University and Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence, Karnataka, collaborated for the promotion of studies and research in ancient Indian knowledge systems. The two varsities signed an MoU in this regard, paving way for a number of initiatives to further the dissemination of vast and deep ancient Indian wisdom.
  • As part of the understanding, SSSUHE is instituting Sri Sathya Sai Scholarship for the students of Banaras Hindu University studying Veda, Sanskrit, Vyakaran, Astrology and other branches of Hindu Studies, like ancient Hindu Art and Aesthetics, Culture, Philosophy, Polity or management systems.
  • Under the scheme, one hundred UG, PG or research students will be provided an annual scholarship of Rs. 25,000 on merit cum means basis. Such students will also get an opportunity to visit SSSUHE campus and Vedic learning centers. The visits shall be sponsored by Sri Sathya Sai University.

Prof. Bharat Bhasker Appointed is New IIMA Director

  • Professor Bharat Bhasker was appointed as the director of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA).
  • Professor Bhasker, who currently holds the position of Professor of Information Technology and Systems at IIM Lucknow, will take charge as IIMA director on March 1, 2023.
  • In the interim, the Board of Governors appointed Prof. Arindam Banerjee as the director-in-charge from February 1 to 28, 2023. The term of the incumbent director, Prof. Errol D'Souza, is ending on January 31.
  • Professor Bhasker had served as the Director of IIM Raipur from March 2017 to March 2022.

Krishi-Mahotsav: Pradarshani Evam Prashikshan in Rajasthan

  • The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, in association with Department of Agriculture, Government of Rajasthan, organised a two-day event, - 'Krishi-Mahotsav: Pradarshani evam Prashikshan' at Dussehra Ground, Kota, Rajasthan to make Kota Division of Rajasthan advanced and leading in the field of agriculture and rural development. Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, Sanjeev Balyan, Rajasthan state Minister of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Lalchand Kataria, and Rajasthan Minister of State, Department of Cooperation, Udaylal Anjana were present in the inaugural ceremony. Apart from them, senior officers of Central Government, State Government and Indian Council of Agricultural Research and about 35,000 farmers, Agri start-ups, corporate bankers, extension workers and employees of private agricultural institutions were also present.
  • Through the exhibition, information about the various schemes of Central and State Government were disseminated through exhibitors. Also, private sector companies/institutions related to supply of various inputs of agriculture displayed their products through stalls. In this exhibition, 150 stalls were set up to provide updated information related to agriculture to the farmers. Keeping in view the need for start-ups in the field of agriculture, 75 stalls of start-ups were also set up, which was one of the main features of this exhibition.

Marriage Before 18 Years cannot be Annulled: Karnataka High Court

  • The Karnataka High Court ruled that the marriage of a woman that has taken place before her attaining 18 years of age cannot be annulled. The bench also quashed the earlier order in this regard by a Family Court.
  • The division bench comprising Chief Justice P. B. Varale and Justice S. Vishvajith Shetty gave the order, while looking into the petition in this regard by a woman.
  • According to the Hindu Marriage Act Section 5 (3), the age of bridegroom should be 21 years and bride should be 18 years. The rule specifying 18 years of age for marriage is being kept out of Section 11 of the Act, the bench said. Besides for cancellation of marriage, the facts have to be in contravention to the Section 5 and rule 1, 4 and 5. Hence, the annulment of marriage won't apply to this case, the bench said.

Scheduled Caste Status to Dalit Christians, Dalit Muslims: Supreme Court Dismisses Plea against Commission Set up by Centre

  • The Supreme Court rejected a petition challenging the setting up of a three-member Commission by the Union government in October 2022 to examine the possibility of granting the Scheduled Caste status to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims.
  • The Bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice B. V. Nagarathna disposed of the plea, observing that it did not see any ground to quash the appointment of the Commission.
