UN Approves Second Four-year Term for Environment Chief Inger Andersen
The UN General Assembly elected Inger Andersen of Denmark to a second four-year term as executive director of the United Nations Environment Program, after defeating a Russian-sponsored resolution that would have opened the job to other candidates.
The decision extends her leadership of the UN's environment agency, based in Nairobi, Kenya, from June 15, 2023, until June 14, 2027.
Before taking the helm of UNEP in June 2019, Andersen was director general of the International Union for Conservation of Nature for four years. Previously, she spent 15 years at the World Bank, including as vice president of the Middle East and North Africa region from 2011 to 2015.
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) appointed Manish Gupta as the president and B. Narasimhan as the vice president of the institute. They will be serving for the current year 2023.

B. Narasimhan is a postgraduate in economics and a fellow member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and has over 4 decades of experience in corporate law and management with a special emphasis on the capital market.

Tanishq Enters American Market

IIT Madras Develops BharOS - India's Indigenious Mobile Operating System
An IIT Madras-incubated firm has developed an Indigenous Mobile Operating System that can benefit India's 100 crore mobile phone users. Called 'BharOS,' this software can be installed on commercial off-the-shelf handsets. It provides a secure environment for users and is a significant contribution towards 'Atmanirbhar Bharat.'
BharOS Services are currently being provided to organisations that have stringent privacy and security requirements whose users handle sensitive information that requires confidential communications on restricted apps on mobiles. Such users require access to private cloud services through private 5G networks.
BharOS comes with No Default Apps (NDA). This means that users are not forced to use apps that they may not be familiar with or that they may not trust. Additionally, this approach allows users to have more control over the permissions that apps have on their device.
Centre Names Praveen Sharma as Director Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission
The Union government cleared the appointment of Praveen Sharma, a 2005 batch officer from Indian Defence Service of Engineers (IDSE) as director of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The appointment of Sharma was cleared after the ministry of defence recommended the name of Sharma for central deputation.
Inaugural Edition of Indo-Egypt Joint Training Exercise Cyclone - I Commences in Rajasthan
The first ever joint exercise between the special forces of the Indian Army and the Egyptian Army named "Exercise Cyclone-I" started at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. The exercise aims to bolster defence co-operation between the two nations and focus on sharing professional skills and interoperability of Special Forces in desert terrain while undertaking counter terrorism, reconnaissance, raids and other special operations.
Exercise "Cyclone - I" is the first exercise of its kind bringing the special forces of both the nations on a common platform. The 14 days long exercise which being carried out in the deserts of Rajasthan engages both the contingents to advance special forces skills such as Sniping, Combat Free Fall, Reconnaissance, Surveillance & Target Designation, sharing of information on weapons, equipment, innovations, tactics, techniques & procedures. The participants would also undertake joint planning and drills for Special Forces operations in a mechanised warfare setting as well as surgical strikes on terrorist camps/hideouts to include sniping of High Value Targets.
A. Vellayan Re-appointed as Chairperson of IIM Kozhikode's Board of Governors
A. Vellayan was re-appointed as the chairperson of the Board of Governors (BoG) of Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode for another four-year period. He was appointed under the IIM Act 2018. This will be his second tenure; he was first appointed as the chairperson in November 2018.
Under his leadership, IIM Kozhikode consolidated its position as the top 5 management institution in the country as per Ministry of Education's NIRF ranking.
India Participates in International Tourism Trade Fair FITUR in Madrid
India participated in an international tourism trade fair in Madrid to help expedite the recovery of the country's inbound tourism to the pre-pandemic level.
Feria Internacional del Turismo or FITUR was hosted in Spain from January 18-22.
The Indian delegation led by Verma, the additional secretary in the ministry, participated in key business meetings with senior leadership from Melia Hotels International, Palladium Hotel Group, Expedia Group, World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), Cushman & Wakefield, and the Indo-Spanish Chambers of Commerce.
FITUR is the global meeting point for tourism professionals and the leading trade fair for inbound and outbound markets in Latin America. FITUR is the second most important tourism fair in the world. Around 10,000 national and international companies take part in each edition and there are more than 50,000 visitors spread over the different days of the event.
Centre Notifies Appointment of Justice Sabina as Acting Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court
The Central government finally notified the appointment of Justice Sabina as the acting Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
The appointment of Justice Sabina's came into effect following the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice Amjad Ahtesham Sayed.
Exercising the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President appointed, Justice Sabina, senior-most Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, for performing the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court.
For Justice Sabina, this is her second term as an acting Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. She held this post in the year 2022.
