Vietnam's President Nguyen Xuan Phuc Quits, Blamed for Ministers' 'Violations'

  • Vietnam's President Nguyen Xuan Phuc submitted his resignation after the ruling Communist Party found him responsible for violations and wrongdoing of numerous officials under him.
  • Phuc, a former Prime Minister, has held the largely ceremonial position for less than two years.
  • There was widespread speculation about Phuc's resignation following dismissals of two Deputy Prime Ministers, who were working under him when he led the government.
  • To become effective, Phuc's resignation requires approval from the National Assembly.
  • Vietnam has no paramount ruler and is officially led by four "pillars": the powerful party's secretary, the President, the Prime Minister and the chair of the parliament.

Nepal PM 'Prachanda' Expands Cabinet to 23 with 6 Women in Ministry

  • Nepal Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda expanded his eight-member Cabinet to 23 with the induction of 12 ministers and three ministers of state, including six women ministers.
  • Prachanda the CPN-Maoist Centre leader was sworn in as the Nepal Prime Minister in December 2022, for the third time after he dramatically walked out of the pre-poll alliance led by the Nepali Congress and joined hands with opposition leader K. P. Sharma Oli.

Paytm Payments Bank Receives Approval from RBI as BBPOU

  • Paytm Payments Bank received final approval from the Reserve Bank of India to operate as a Bharat Bill Payment Operating Unit (BBPOU).
  • Under Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), a BBPOU is allowed to facilitate bill payment services of electricity, phone, DTH, water, gas insurance, loan repayments, FASTag recharge, education fees, credit card bill and municipal taxes.
  • BBPS is owned by the National Payments Corporation of India.
  • So far, Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) has been undertaking this activity under in-principle authorisation from RBI.

MoU Signed to Facilitate Low Interest Rate Loans to Farmers

  • To facilitate farmers in getting loans at low-interest rates, Warehousing Development Regulatory Authority (WDRA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Bank of India (SBI).
  • According to a Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution release, the MoU was signed with the intent of promoting awareness about the new loan product called Produce Marketing Loan to exclusively fund against e-NWRs (electronic Negotiable Warehouse Receipt) with features such as Nil processing fee, No Additional collateral and attractive interest rates.
  • It is envisaged that the product will have far-reaching consequences with regard to the acceptance of e-NWRs among small and marginal farmers. It has the potential to make a significant impact on the finances of rural depositors by preventing distress sales and releasing better prices for their farm produce.

Adani, Ashok Leyland to Develop Asia's First Hydrogen-mining Truck

  • Adani Enterprises signed a deal with Ashok Leyland and Ballard Power to launch a pilot project to develop a hydrogen fuel cell electric truck for mining logistics and transportation, a first in Asia.
  • The FCET is scheduled to be launched in India in 2023. The demonstration project will be led by AEL, a company focused on both mining operations and developing green hydrogen projects for sourcing, transporting, and building out hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Ballard, an industry leading PEM fuel cell engine manufacturer, will supply the FCmoveTM fuel cell engine for the hydrogen truck and Ashok Leyland, one of the largest manufacturers of buses in the world, will provide the vehicle platform and technical support.

IISc and McGill University Detect Radio Signals

  • Astronomers from McGill University in Canada and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru used data from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune to detect a radio signal originating from atomic hydrogen in an extremely distant galaxy.
  • According to an IISc, the astronomical distance over which such a signal has been picked up is the largest so far by a large margin. This is also the first confirmed detection of strong lensing of 21 cm emission from a galaxy.

Govt. to Ogranise First Global Tourism Summit in April as Part of G-20

  • The Centre will organise the country's first Global Tourism Summit in April as part of India's G-20 presidency, wherein all the member countries will participate.
  • CII is the industry partner for the event to be held on April 10-12, in New Delhi.
  • According to Arun Srivastava, Deputy Director General, Publicity, Ministry of Tourism, the summit is being organised to showcase various opportunities for investment and trade in the sector, especially in the hospitality sector. This will allow global visitors to explore Indian tourism products and services that will provide an opportunity to the local players to cater to the global demand and compete in this sector.

J. P. Nadda's Tenure as BJP President Extended Till June 2024

  • BJP President J.P. Nadda's tenure, set to end this month, was extended till June 2024 in view of the upcoming Assembly elections this year and the Lok Sabha elections next year.
  • Rising through the ranks, Nadda, who hails from Himachal, will oversee the 2024 General Election for the party which is eyeing a record third term at the Centre with Narendra Modi as Prime Minister.
  • The faith the BJP has put in him brings a massive responsibility for the 62-year-old, considering that a 2024 win would mean Modi would be the second Prime Minister after the late Jawaharlal Nehru to lead their party to three consecutive terms in power.

'Success Event of Womaniya Initiative Commemorated in New Delhi

  • The success of "Womaniya on Government eMarketplace" was commemorated in New Delhi. The event was held by Government eMarketplace (GeM) in partnership with the self-employed women's association, Bharat (SEWA Bharat), and attended by women entrepreneurs and participants from stakeholders' organizations and associations.
  • The initiative "Womaniya on GeM" is to empower women entrepreneurs and women self-help groups (WSHGs) to sell their products directly to various government ministries, departments, and institutions. The initiative aims to develop women entrepreneurship on the margins of society to achieve gender-inclusive economic growth.

Pankaj Kumar Singh Appointed Deputy NSA

  • Retired director general of the Border Security Force (BSF) Pankaj Kumar Singh was appointed as deputy national security adviser (NSA).
  • Singh, a 1988-batch IPS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, was appointed on a re-employment contract for a period of two years.
  • Singh retired as BSF chief on December 31, 2022.
  • When Singh took charge of the BSF on August 31, 2021, he had created history of a son and a father holding the top post of a paramilitary force during their services.
  • His father and retired IPS officer of the 1959-batch, Prakash Singh, had also headed the BSF from June, 1993 to January, 1994.

Sri Lanka, US Conducts Joint Exercises to Maintain Free Indo-Pacific

  • Sri Lanka and the US is conducting a week-long joint military exercises to prepare for disaster relief and maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific, amid China's increasing military manoeuvring in the strategic region.
  • The US Navy and Marine Corps commenced exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT)/Marine Exercise (MAREX) Sri Lanka 2023 with the Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force in Colombo.
  • This is the fifth CARAT/MAREX exercise between the US and Sri Lanka, and this year includes participants from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and Maldives National Defence Force.
  • CARAT/MAREX Sri Lanka is a bilateral exercise between Sri Lanka and the US designed to promote regional security cooperation, maintain and strengthen maritime partnerships, and enhance maritime interoperability.

World's Oldest Person, Lucile Randon, Passes Away

  • The world's oldest known person, French nun Lucile Randon, died aged 118 in the city of Toulon.
  • The sister was recognised as the oldest European, before the death of Japan's Kane Tanaka aged 119 in 2022.
  • Lucile Randon, also known as Sister Andre, was born in 1904 in the French town of Ales. A born survivor, she lived through the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918 and two World Wars.

Bhavin Rabari Bags International Press Academy (IPA) Award

  • Bhavin Rabari, the lead child actor in Pan Nalin's Oscar-nominated Gujarati film Chhello Show (The Last Film Show), bagged the International Press Academy (IPA) award in the 'Best Breakthrough Performance' category at the 27th Satellite Awards held in the United States.
  • The film is the first Indian film to be shortlisted for the Oscars in the 'Best International Feature Film' category after 21 years. The film has also bagged top honours in other international festivals like Tribeca, Busan, Mill Valley, and Seminci.
  • Rabari the child actor who played the character of the protagonist named Samay, is among the youngest recipients of the prestigious award, joining the list of former recipients such as Edward Norton, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Russel Crowe, and Hale Berry.

Infosys Inks MoU with JNTU-K to Accelerate Digital, Life Skills Development

  • Infosys signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University – Kakinada (JNTU-K) to accelerate digital and life skills development across India through its online learning platform, Infosys Springboard.
  • As part of the engagement with Infosys, JNTU-K will offer e-content on their website including self-learning material, assignments and projects, powered by Infosys Springboard, to accelerate digital skills development.
  • JNTU-K introduced 8 skill-oriented courses in collaboration with Infosys. Industry-relevant content will be made available, through Infosys Springboard, to 200+ affiliated institutions impacting about 1.5 lakh students. This will benefit not just students but members of their faculty too, to help implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Punjab: AAP Government to Launch 'Schools of Eminence' Project

  • The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab is all set to launch its first major education project, 'Schools of Eminence', on January 21.
  • The launch programme will be held at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Mohali. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is expected to be the chief guest.
  • Under the project, the AAP government will upgrade existing government schools into 'Schools of Eminence' for classes 9 to 12. The government plans to upgrade nearly 110 government schools as 'Schools of Eminence' in Phase 1.

India Second-largest Market for Singapore Tourism Sector in 2022

  • India was ranked the second-largest tourist market for Singapore in 2022 behind Indonesia, with 686,000 Indian arrivals, according to data provided by the country's tourism authority.
  • As per Singapore Tourism Board (STB), tourists from Indonesia, India and Australia were among the top spenders in the first nine months of 2022 with a spending of 8.96 billion Singapore dollars (SGD).
  • Malaysia with 591,000 tourists was in third place.

Default Bail Cancellation can be Considered on Merit, Says SC

  • Grant of default bail will not operate as an absolute bar to cancelling it once the charge sheet is filed and the same can be considered if a strong case is made out, the Supreme Court said.
  • A bench of Justices M. R. Shah and C. T. Ravikumar said this while asking the Telangana High Court to reconsider a CBI plea for cancellation of bail granted to accused Erra Gangi Reddy in connection with the murder of former Andhra Pradesh minister and Congress leader Y S Vivekananda Reddy and decide it on merits.

Supreme Court Disposes of Plea Seeking Allotment of Father's Chamber to Law Student

  • The Supreme Court referred a petition to the Chamber Allotment Committee, which sought allotment of a chamber belonging to a deceased lawyer to his daughter pursuing Law.
  • The Bench of Justice M. R. Shah and Justice C. T. Ravikumar told petitioner-in-person Anamika Dewan that it cannot pass an order for allotment of the Chamber to her as she was still a student, when there were hundreds of Advocates waiting for a chamber.
  • The petitioner then contended that she would be an Advocate in four months.
  • In the writ petition filed in the nature of Mandamus, the student submitted that her father, who was an Advocate on Record in the Supreme Court, had expired due to Covid-19. She said her father's hard work would go in vain as he toiled for 30 years for the chamber.
  • The Apex Court, while extending full sympathy towards the petitioner, told her that Chamber allotment would be done according to the seniority.
