Sri Lankan President Says Full Implementation of 13A Needed for Unity

  • Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that his government is hoping to fully implement the 13th Amendment to its ­Constitution as mooted by India to facilitate unity among all the communities so that they could live as one.
  • India has been pressing Sri Lanka to implement the 13th Amendment which was brought in after the Indo-Sri Lankan agreement of 1987.
  • The 13A provides for the devolution of power to the Tamil community.

Govt. Extends Tenure of Bank of Baroda MD Sanjiv Chadha by 5 Months

  • The government extended the tenure of Managing Director (MD) and CEO of Bank of Baroda (BoB) Sanjiv Chadha for about five months till June 30, 2023.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the proposal of the Department of Financial Services for extending the term of Chadha till June 30, 2023, when he attains 60 years, the retirement age.

India, UK to Launch Young Professionals Scheme in February

  • India and the UK will launch the Young Professionals Scheme next month that will allow degree-holding Indian nationals in the age group 18-30 years to live and work in Britain for up to two years.
  • The scheme would be launched on February 28, according to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement issued after the 15th India-UK Foreign Office Consultations (FOC).
  • Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra led the Indian delegation while the British side was helmed by Philip Barton, Permanent Under-Secretary, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
  • The UK-India Young Professionals Scheme will offer 3,000 places annually to 18 to 30 years old degree-educated Indian nationals to come to the UK to live and work for up to two years.
  • The programme will be reciprocal, also allowing UK professionals in the same position to participate in a professional exchange by living and working in India.

Axis Bank Tops Re-bond League Table for 16th Consecutive Year in 2022

  • Axis Bank trumped every competitor for the 16th consecutive year in 2022 as a rupee domestic bond issue arranger, cornering 19.20 per cent market share or Rs. 92,904.5 crore across 127 issuances.
  • Significantly, the top three spots were retained by private sector lenders with the second position maintained by ICICI Bank with a market share of 17.67 per cent or Rs. 85,486 crore and HDFC Bank third with 17.29 per cent or Rs. 83,667 crore of the total share, according to the Bloomberg league table for 2022.

Indian Pair of Yuki-Saketh Wins Bangkok Open Challenger Title

  • The top-seeded Indian team of Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni won the Bangkok Open title, their sixth together on the ATP Challenger Tour, as they beat Christopher Rungkat and Akira Santillan.

Viacom18 Bags Women's IPL Five-year Media Rights

  • Reliance-backed Viacom18 secured the Women's Indian Premier League (WIPL) media rights for five years (2023-27).
  • Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah said that Viacom18 had committed Rs. 951 crore for five years, translating into a per-match value of Rs 7.09 crore.
  • Disney Star was the other broadcaster to place a bid.
  • However, Disney Star's bid amount could not be ascertained immediately. Sony-Zee opted to stay out of the auction.

Yonex- Sunrise India Open 2023 Begins in Delhi

  • A new platform 'Gorkha Swabhiman Manch' was formed for the resurrection of the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state in the hills by the opposition trio, namely Hamro Party's Ajay Edwards, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM)'s Bimal Gurung and influential hill leader Binoy Tamang.

The 21st Edition of Naval Exercise 'Varuna' between India and France Begins

  • The 21st edition of the bilateral naval exercise between India and France commenced on the western seaboard.
  • Initiated in 1993, the exercise was christened 'Varuna' in 2001 and has become a hallmark of IndiaFrance strategic bilateral relationship.
  • This edition of the exercise will witness participation of indigenous guided missile stealth destroyer INS Chennai, guided missile frigate INS Teg, maritime patrol aircraft P-8I and Dornier, integral helicopters and MiG29K fighter aircraft.
  • The French Navy is represented by the aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle, frigates FS Forbin and Provence, support vessel FS Marne and maritime patrol aircraft Atlantique.
  • The exercise is being conducted over five days from January 16 to 20 and will witness advanced air defence exercises, tactical manoeuvres, surface firings, underway replenishment and other maritime operations.

Mukarram Jah, Titular Eighth Nizam of Hyderabad, Passes Away

  • Mukarram Jah, the titular Nizam VIII, passed away in Istanbul, Turkey. He was 89.
  • The eighth Nizam was born in 1933 and moved to Turkey where he was residing till his death.
  • Mukarram Jah was born to Prince Azam Jah and Princess Durru Shehvar, the imperial princess of the Ottoman Empire, on October 6, 1933 in France.
  • He was coronated as Asaf Jah the Eighth on April 6, 1967, after the passing away of Mir Osman Ali Khan in February 1967.

Writer K. Venu Receives Federal Bank Literary Award

  • Noted writer K. Venu bagged the first-ever Federal Bank Literary Award 2022 for his autobiography 'Oranweshananthinte Katha'.

Gujarat Vidyapith Appoints Incharge VC after High Court Direction

  • A senior professor of the Gujarat Vidyapith was asked to take over as its in-charge vice chancellor, ahead of the High Court's deadline of January 17 for action against VC Rajendra Khimani, who resigned, based on a University Grants Commission report.
  • Professor Bharat Joshi, from the Department of Education of the Vidyapith, founded by Mahatma Gandhi, was asked to take charge until the new appointment is made. Joshi confirmed he received a call regarding the same. He agreed to take charge.
  • The UGC in November 2021 directed the chancellor of the Vidyapith, a deemed university based in Ahmedabad, to remove Khimani as VC after its inquiry report identified a procedural lapse in his appointment. There were also certain lapses on Khimani's part in the administrative and financial functioning of the Gujarat Vidyapith as the registrar between April 1, 2004, to April 30, 2019.

First Edition of Chennai International Book Fair Begins in Chennai

  • Focussed on facilitating the exchange of knowledge between publishers in Tamil Nadu and those from across the world, the first edition of the Chennai International Book Fair kicked off at the YMCA Grounds in Nandanam.

Supreme Court Issues Notice to Centre, National Medical Commission on Mandatory Internship for China-educated Medical Graduates

  • The Supreme Court issued notice to the Union government and the National Medical Commission (NMC) on a petition filed by 70 China-educated medical graduates challenging a circular that made a two-year internship compulsory for them.
  • The orders were passed by a Bench of Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice Vikram Nath.
  • A batch of petitions were been filed in the Apex Court by Indian medical students studying in Ukraine, China and Philippines, seeking to continue their education in India.
  • The top court of the country had segregated the pleas made by China-graduated students from others in November, as they had resorted to online education in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, and not because of any war-like situation, which was the case in students educating in Ukraine.
