Italy Backs Appian Way's Candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • Italy's Ministry of Culture backed the Appian Way's candidacy to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first time such a bid has had national support in the country.
  • The Appian Way is a 2,300-year-old road connecting Rome to the south-eastern Italian city of Brindisi. When work on the road began in 312 BC, it was one of the largest infrastructure projects in ancient Rome.
  • Because the road is around 550 kilometre long, the candidacy of the Appian Way will have the backing of four of the Italian regions it passes through -- Lazio, Campania, Basilicata, and Puglia, as well as 12 provinces and cities, and 73 towns.
  • In addition to the Ministry of Culture, 25 universities and 15 national or regional parks have also backed the candidacy.

UK, EU Poised to Enter Final Stretch of Post-Brexit Deal Negotiations

  • The UK and European Union are poised to enter the final stretch of negotiations over post-Brexit trading arrangements for Northern Ireland. After years of distrust and tension both sides are optimistic that a settlement is within reach.

Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance and Punjab & Sind Bank Enter Strategic Partnership

  • Punjab & Sind Bank (PSB), a public sector bank, and Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance (BALI) entered into a corporate agency partnership.
  • The partnership will allow PSB's new and existing customers to avail a variety of retail life insurance products from BALI including term, savings, retirement and investment options.
  • It will allow BALI to offer protection and savings life insurance plans to bank's customers through its branch network.
  • PSB is the 25th Schedule Commercial Bank that partnered with BALI for distributing its life goals-based product suite.

HCLTech Becomes Mattel's Primary Digital Transformation Partner

  • Technology company HCLTech announced that global toy manufacturer Mattel Inc. selected it as primary digital transformation partner for the next several years.
  • HCLTech will drive transformation across Mattel's global technology landscape cutting across applications, infrastructure and information security domains. The IT major will support Mattel's future direction and continued digital transformation journey.
  • "With operations in more than 35 locations around the world, it is vital to have an IT services partner that can match our scale and adjust for our growth as an IP-driven, high-performing toy company," said Sven Gerjets, Chief Technology Officer at Mattel.

Cognizant appoints former Infosys president Ravi Kumar as CEO

  • IT giant Cognizant announced Ravi Kumar as its new Chief Executive Officer, replacing the outgoing Brian Humphries. Kumar was the president and COO of Infosys until October 2022, before leaving the company to join Cognizant the following week as President of Cognizant Americas.
  • Humphries resigned from the post that he held for four years, a move that has been linked to Cognizant's recent underperformance, including revenue decline in the third quarter of 2022.
  • Kumar worked in Infosys for over 20 years, and served as the company's president for the last six years of his stint. He also served on the boards of TransUnion and software services provider Digimarc Corp.

  • Men's Hockey World Cup, 2023 got underway evening with a spectacular opening ceremony at the picturesque Barabati Stadium in Cuttack that was witnessed by thousands of hockey lovers in attendance from across the country and abroad.
  • Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, International Hockey Federation president Tayyab Ikram and Hockey India chairman Dilip Tirkey were present at the glittering ceremony and welcomed members of all the 16 participating teams.
  • India vs Spain Group D match of the 2023 Men's Hockey World Cup was played at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on January 13, 2023.

At the inaugural ceremony of 'Jai Hindi' Light and Sound Show, Union Culture Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Minister of State for Cultures, Meenakshi Lekhi, Lt Governor of Dekhi VK Saxena, Minister of State, and Several other dignitaries were present.

Odisha Govt's CAMPA Steering Committee Approves Rs. 1,086 crore Action Plan for 2023-24

  • Odisha government's state level steering committee for CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management & Planning Authority) approved an annual plan of Rs 1,086 crore for 2023-24 fiscal with focus on reducing man-animal conflict.
  • Chief Secretary S.C. Mohapatra chaired the meeting which approved the annual plan. Mohapatra raised the issue relating to wildlife management activities which are being extensively being carried out through CAMPA funds.
  • He said afforestation programmes are also to be monitored using CAMPA tracker and through satellite in every six months and to be verified in the field though frequent inspection by senior officers.

'Saarang 2023' India's Largest Student-run Festival Begins at IIT Madras

  • The 28th edition of Saarang, India's largest student-run festival began at IIT Madras. Saarang 2023 will feature more than 100 events with participation from 500 colleges across the country. The Saarang 2023 is one of the largest student-run festivals held completely in physical mode. It is expected to see over 80,000 people at the festival. The fest will be held till January 15, 2023.
  • The theme of this year's Saarang edition is 'Mystic Hues' which celebrates how intertwined colors are with culture and tradition.
  • IIT Madras is hosting the Saarang 2023 after two years post Covid-19 pandemic.

BHU Launches Certificate Programme in Artificial Intelligence

  • The Department of Computer Science at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) launched a new specialised training and six month certification programme on Artificial Intelligence.
  • The acdemic session is scheduled to begin from February 1 and conclude in July. A total of 100 seats are being offered by BHU under this programme, and admissions will be done on entrance test basis.
  • Candidates who have bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, technology or equivalent are eligible to appear for the entrance exam. There is no course fee for the programme and all the participants who complete the course successfully will be awarded a certificate.

HM Amit Shah Releases a Book Titled 'Revolutionaries'

  • Home Minister Amit Shah released a book titled 'Revolutionaries - The Other Story of How India Won Its Freedom' at a function in New Delhi.
  • The author of the book is economist Sanjeev Sanyal who is also a member of Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Shah said that the country is celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and the Prime Minister has given a call of Panch Pran of which the two important resolves are - to remove any trace of colonial mindset and take pride in our roots.

Bench of Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Recuses from Hearing Review Plea against Appointment of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud

  • Chief Justice (CJ) Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad of the Delhi High Court rescued themselves from hearing a review petition challenging appointment of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
  • The review petition was filed against an order of the High Court dated November 11, 2022, by which the petition challenging appointment of CJI Chandrachud was dismissed by the High Court.
  • The same bench of CJ Sharma and Justice Prasad who rescued had passed the dismissal order then.
  • The Court in its November order, had put a fine of Rs. 1 lakh on the petitioner, Sanjeev Kumar Tiwari, who is the president of an organisation named Gram Uday Foundation.
