UAE Names Sultan al-Jaber to Lead UN COP28 Climate Talks

  • The United Arab Emirates named a veteran technocrat who both leads Abu Dhabi's state-run oil company and oversees its renewable energy efforts to be the president of the upcoming United Nations climate negotiations in Dubai, highlighting the balancing act ahead for this crude-producing nation.
  • Authorities named Sultan al-Jaber, a trusted confidant of UAE leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who serves as CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co.
  • The 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28) to the UNFCCC will convene from 30 November to 12 December 2023. It will take place in the United Arab Emirates.

Infosys Appoints Govind Iyer Independent Director

  • IT major Infosys approved the appointment of Govind Vaidiram Iyer as an additional and independent director of the company.
  • The appointment is based on recommendation of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee of the Infosys board, and is for a period of five years, subject to the approval of shareholders.
  • Iyer, an industry veteran, retired as a partner from Egon Zehnder, a global leadership advisory firm. Prior to joining Egon, he worked at Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, and Heinz.

Govt. Approves Incentive Scheme for Promotion of RuPay Debit Cards

  • The Union Cabinet gave its nod to a Rs. 2,600 crore-incentive scheme, which is aimed at boosting low-value transactions done through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and promote Rupay debit cards.
  • The incentives will be provided on the use of Rupay debit cards and the person-to-merchant BHIM-UPI transactions of low value.
  • Under the scheme, the acquiring banks will be provided financial incentive for promoting point-of-sale (PoS) and e-commerce transactions for current FY2022-23.
  • The benefits of the scheme include the building of a robust digital payment ecosystem, and to promote UPI Lite and UPI 123Pay as economical and user-friendly digital payment options.

Kerala Breaks Guinness Record for Goals Scored

  • Kerala kicked itself into the Guinness Book of World Records by taking 4,500 penalty kicks in 12 hours. The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs made it possible for the football-crazy state to set the Guinness record at a Dream Goal penalty shootout organised at Payyanad Football Stadium at Manjeri.
  • The excitement was palpable at the stadium throughout the day as hundreds of footballers, students, teachers and football lovers queued up to take the penalty kicks. Many missed, but some netted with impeccable perfection.
  • The organisers arranged students from different schools and colleges across Malappuram district and they were set in batches of 50. Each batch was given 50 balls. Under the surveillance of the Guinness officials, the participants stood in queue after registering themselves by producing their Aadhaar cards.

Prime Minister Addresses 'Voice of Global South' Summit

  • In his opening remarks at the Voice of Global South Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the "world is in a state of crisis" and told the leaders of developing countries "your voice is India's voice" and "your priorities are India's priorities".
  • Global South refers to the developing and the less-developed countries of the world.
  • The Summit envisaged 10 sessions—four would be held on January 12, and six sessions on January 13. Each session witnessed the participation of leaders and ministers from 10-20 countries.
  • The inaugural and concluding sessions were at the Head of State/Government level, and were hosted by PM Modi. The theme of the Inaugural Leaders' session was "Voice of Global South – for Human-Centric Development" and that of the Concluding Leaders' session was "Unity of Voice-Unity of Purpose".

Vice President Inaugurates 83rd Conference of All India Presiding Officers' in Jaipur

  • Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurated the two-day-long 83rd conference of All India Presiding Officers in Jaipur. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Speakers and Deputy Speakers of various Legislative Assemblies including the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman were present in the conference.

ICG Ship 'Kamla Devi', Last Vessel of FPV Series, Commissioned

  • Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship 'Kamla Devi', the Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) designed, built and delivered by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd to the Indian Coast Guard was commissioned.
  • ICGS Kamla Devi is officially the fifth and last vessel of the series of FPVs designed and built by GRSE as per the specifications of the Indian Coast Guard.
  • ICGS Kamla Devi is 48.9 meters long and 7.5 meters wide with a displacement of 308 tonnes. With three engines and water jets, she is capable of a top speed of 34 knots and an endurance of over 1,500 nautical miles. She also has an Integrated Bridge System and is fitted with a 40/60 gun as the main armament.

Former JD(U) President Sharad Yadav Passes Away

  • Former JD(U) president and ex-convener of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance Sharad Yadav passed away. He was 75.
  • Yadav became a Lok Sabha member first from Jabalpur (MP), then Madhepura (Bihar) and later Badaun (UP). He was a seven-term Lok Sabha MP and a four-term Rajya Sabha MP, having served in public life for nearly 50 years after getting elected to the fifth Lok Sabha for the first time in 1974 from Jabalpur.
  • He was arrested under the controversial Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency.
  • In 1997, Yadav became the Janata Dal chief. The veteran later headed the JD(U), formed in 2003 with the merger of Samata Party and the Janata Dal faction headed by him. Between 2003 and 2016, Yadav remained the JD(U) chief.

Centre Renames Integrated Food Security Scheme

  • The Centre renamed the new Integrated Food Security Scheme as Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana, PMGKAY. Earlier, the Union Cabinet had approved new integrated food security scheme for providing free foodgrains to Antodaya Ann Yojna (AAY) and Primary Household (PHH) beneficiaries. Implementation of the new scheme started this year (2023), benefiting more than 80 crore poor and poorest of poor people.
  • Keeping in view the welfare of the beneficiaries and in order to maintain uniformity across the states, free foodgrains will be provided under PMGKAY for the year 2023 to all Primary Household and Antodaya Ann Yojna beneficiaries, as per entitlement under National Food Security Act. The integrated scheme will strengthen the provisions of National Food Security Act in terms of accessibility, affordability, and availability of foodgrains for the poor. Necessary steps have already been taken for smooth implementation of the PMGKAY in the field.

Indian High Commission to Establish Hindi Chair at Sabaragamuwa University

  • The Indian High Commission signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka to establish a Hindi Chair. The MoU was signed by High Commissioner Gopal Baglay, and Vice Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University Professor Udaya Rathnayake.
  • The MoU aims to establish the Hindi Chair as a part of India's cultural connection through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. The Hindi chair will help in familiarizing students of Sabaragamuwa University with India, its history, and its culture. It will also pave the way for popularising Hindi by deputing Indian faculties.
  • The Indian Mission will also award a gold medal to the best-performing student of the Hindi Chair.
  • The Sabaragamuwa University is a public university located in Belihuloya, Balangoda, Sri Lanka.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Inaugurates School of Logistics, Waterways and Communication in Agartala

  • The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, along with Manik Saha, Chief Minister, Tripura inaugurated the School of Logistics, Waterways and Communication in Agartala, Tripura. The school will enable the rich pool of talent of the region to become world class experts in the transportation and logistics sector. In order to unlock the promised economic potential of the north-east, the school will be enable the innate capacity of human resources along our opulent waterways.
  • The Centre for Logistic, Communication and Waterways would facilitate in conducting studies/research, training, workshops/seminars for stakeholders like businesses, exporters/importers, Chambers of Commerce and Industries, local entrepreneurs, tourist operators etc. It has been set up under State Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development (SIPARD). SIPARD is an autonomous body funded by the Government of Tripura and partially by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India.

  • Petta Thullal, the ritualistic sacred dance by Ambalappuzha group to celebrate victory of Lord Ayyappa over demon princess Mahishi was held at Erumeli town in Kottayam district, Kerala.
  • The event marked the last leg of the annual Sabarimala pilgrimage season.
  • The devotees started the ceremonial dance after sighting the sacred eagle (Krishna Parunthu) in the sky from Kochambalam.

  • Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the book titled 'Braving A Viral Storm: India's Covid-19 Vaccine Story' in New Delhi.
  • The book is co-authored by Aashish Chandorkar and Suraj Sudhir. The book launch came ahead of India's second anniversary of starting its COVID-19 vaccination drive in January 2021.Mandaviya said that the book is a transcription of the country's success story and will be New India's history.

Madras High Court Designates 62 Lawyers as Senior Advocates

  • The High Court of Madras High notified the designation of 62 lawyers as Senior Advocates.
  • The notification was issued under Section 16 (2) of the Advocates Act, 1961.
  • About 175 applications were received after the notifications were issued in September 2020 and June 2022. The permanent committee had approved 149 eligible applicants. Interviews with these applicants took place between November 16 and 23, 2022.
