Indian-origin Manpreet Monica Singh Sworn in as 1st female Sikh Judge of USA

  • Indian-origin Manpreet Monica Singh was sworn in as a Harris County judge, becoming the first female Sikh judge in the US.
  • Ms. Singh was born and raised in Houston and now lives in Bellaire.
  • She was sworn in as a judge of the Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4 in Texas.
  • Ms. Singh's father immigrated to the US in the early 1970s.
  • A trial lawyer for 20 years, she has been involved in numerous civil rights organizations at the local, state, and national levels.

Gabon Names Vice-president and New Prime Minister

  • Gabon's President Ali Bongo appointed the country's first female Prime Minister Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda to the role of vice-president and named a new PM to replace her.
  • Ossouka Raponda was appointed in July 2020 after her predecessor stepped down. She was Defence Minister before that.
  • Former Minister Alain-Claude Bilie By Nze will replace Ossouka Raponda and form a new government.

Ozone Layer Slowly Healing, Hole to Mend by 2066: United Nations Report

  • According to a new United Nations report, the Earth's protective ozone layer is slowly but noticeably healing at a pace that would fully mend the hole over Antarctica in about 43 years.
  • A once-every-four-years scientific assessment found recovery in progress, more than 35 years after every nation in the world agreed to stop producing chemicals that chomp on the layer of ozone in Earth's atmosphere that shields the planet from harmful radiation linked to skin cancer, cataracts and crop damage.

Meta Appoints former Tata CliQ CEO as Global Business Head in India

  • Vikas Purohit will head Facebook parent Meta's global business group in India, said the social media platform.
  • Purohit, the former CEO of Tata CLiQ, will lead Meta's strategic relationship with brands and agencies to drive revenue growth across key channels. He will partner with the media and others for accelerating the adoption of digital tools by advertisers and agencies.
  • Purohit has more than 20 years of experience in senior business, sales and marketing roles at major fashion and retail companies. An alumnus of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology (Varanasi), Purohit has headed business for Tommy Hilfiger, Reliance Brands Limited, Amazon Fashion, and Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail. His last stint was at Tata CLiQ, where he joined as COO and later became the CEO.

  • Kumar was present ECIL's Executive Director.

NASA Satellite Falls from Sky off Alaska

  • After almost 40 years circling Earth, a retired NASA science satellite plunged harmlessly through the atmosphere off the coast of Alaska.
  • Last week NASA had said that it expected most of the 5,400-pound (2,450-kilogram) Earth Radiation Budget Satellite to burn up in the atmosphere, but that some pieces might survive.
  • Space shuttle Challenger carried the satellite into orbit and the first American woman in space set it free. The satellite measured ozone in the atmosphere and studied how Earth absorbed and radiated energy from the sun, before being retired in 2005, well beyond its expected working lifetime.

Anahat Singh Wins Girls U-15 Squash Title at 2023 British Junior Open

  • Indian squash prodigy Anahat Singh clinched the girls Under-15 squash title at the most prestigious British Junior Open tournament in Birmingham.
  • She defeated Sohaila Hazem of Egypt, 3-1 in the final. Despite the first set being closely contested, she took the lead and won the tournament.
  • The British Junior Open is held in January every year in the UK where all the best players from all over the world compete to win the coveted title. This year it was held after a Covid-induced gap of two years from January 4 to 8.

Chetan Sharma Reappointed as Chairman of BCCI's selection committee

  • Chetan Sharma was reappointed as the Chairman of the senior selection committee, exactly two months after his entire panel was disbanded by the BCCI for the Indian team's semi-final exit in the T20 World Cup. Salil Ankola, Shiv Sunar Das, Subroto Banerjee and Sridharan Sharath are new members of the selection committee. The new committee was picked by the Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik. The committee further recommended Chetan Sharma for the role of Chairman of the senior men's selection committee.

Novak Djokovic Saves Championship Point to Beat Korda to Adelaide Title

  • Novak Djokovic defeated America's Sebastian Korda in a nerve-wracking final to win the Adelaide International men's singles title. The 21-time Grand Slam winner won the match 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in three hours and nine minutes.
  • After losing the first set, Djokovic faced a championship point with the score-line reading 5-6 in favour of Korda. However, once the Serbian took the match in the tie-breaker, there was no stopping him.
  • Djokovic also equalled Rafael Nadal's tally of 92 ATP singles titles in the Open Era. Nadal and Djokovic are joint-fourth in the list after Jimmy Connors (109), Roger Federer (103) and Ivan Lendl (94).

PM Launches Aspirational Block Programme

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the government's Aspirational Block Programme (ABP), which is aimed at improving performance of blocks lagging on various development parameters.
  • The ABP was launched during the 2nd National Conference of Chief Secretaries, which was held on January 5-7.
  • The Centre had announced its intention to launch this initiative in the Union Budget 2022-23.
  • Launching the Aspirational Block Programme, Prime Minister underscored the success achieved in various Aspirational Districts in the country under the Aspirational District Programme.
  • As per reports, the programme will cover 500 districts across 31 states and Union Territories initially. Over half of these blocks are in 6 states—Uttar Pradesh (68 blocks), Bihar (61), Madhya Pradesh (42), Jharkhand (34), Odisha (29) and West Bengal (29). However, states can add more blocks to the programme later.

National Health Authority to Grade Performance of Hospitals Empaneled under PM-JAY

  • The National Health Authority (NHA) is introducing a new system to measure and grade performance of hospitals under the flagship scheme Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).
  • The aim is to shift the focus of measuring performance of hospitals from volume of services provided to the value of healthcare services.
  • The new initiative will introduce the concept of 'value- based care', where payment will be outcome based and providers will be rewarded according to the quality of the treatment delivered. Under the new model, the providers will be rewarded for helping the patients improve their health, which consequently will reduce the effects of disease in the population in the long term.
  • The step promises significant increase in the overall health gains and is expected to be a win-win for all concerned stakeholders from patients to healthcare providers, payers and suppliers.

CM M.K. Stalin Launches Global Tamil Angels Platform

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched the Global Tamil Angels platform (www.tamilangels.fund) for investors from the global Tamil diaspora to make investments in the state's start-ups.
  • The platform was launched at the "Global Startup Investors Summit," jointly organised by the Tamil Nadu Start-up and Innovation Mission and FeTNA International Tamil Entrepreneur Network.
  • Global Tamil Angels is a platform by Start-upTN that makes fundraising easy for Tamil Nadu-based start-ups and investing easy for Global Tamil Angel Investors by helping them get connected. It aims to onboard angel investors from the Tamil diaspora across countries.

Rehman Rahi, Kashmir's First Jnanpith Awardee Passes Away

  • Noted academic, poet, and Kashmir's first Jnanpith awardee, Professor Rehman Rahi, passed away at his Srinagar residence. He was 98.
  • Prof. Rahi was an acclaimed poet who also translated the works of many renowned poets and writers into the Kashmiri language. In 2007, he was awarded the country's highest literary award, the Jnanpith, for his work "Siyah Rood-e-Jaerenn Manz" (In the black downpours). Among other awards, the globally acclaimed poet also received Padma Shri in 2000.

World Hindi Day

  • World Hindi Diwas or Vishwa Hindi Divas is observed on January 10 annually. The day is dedicated to the Hindi language and its rich cultural heritage throughout the world.
  • Vishwa Hindi Divas is celebrated globally to commemorate the anniversary of the first time that Hindi was spoken in the United Nations General Assembly in 1949. The day has great significance because it was an opportunity for global Hindi speakers to promote the language and its literature.
  • In January 2006, was celebrated for the first time, as announced by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

India and the UK Sign, Exchange Letters to Formalise Young Professional Scheme in London

  • High Commissioner of India to the UK, Vikram K. Doraiswami and Matthew Rycroft, the permanent secretary at the Home Office of the UK signed and exchanged letters for formalising the Young Professional Scheme at an event in London.
  • The Young Professionals Scheme will allow graduates aged between 18-30 to get a two-year visa to study in each other's countries and help the youth understand the culture of one another.

Uniform Civil Code: Apex Court Dismisses PIL Challenging States Forming Committees for Implementation

  • The Apex Court dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition which challenged the decision of the States of Uttarakhand and Gujarat for constituting committees for introducing and implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
  • A bench of Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud and Justice P. S. Narasimha termed a plea filed by one Anoop Baranwal devoid of any merit and said that constitution of such committees cannot be challenged as ultra vires before courts.
  • The Court talked about Article 162 and said that it indicates that executive power of states extends to what legislature permits it to. It further added that the Constitution of the committee cannot be challenged as ultra vires.
  • The bench stated that there was nothing wrong if states form committees as Article 162 of Constitution gives the power to executive to do so.

Authority Barred under Arbitration and Conciliation Act cannot be Appointed as Arbitrator: Allahabad High Court

  • The Allahabad High Court, while disposing an application, observed that a person or authority barred under Seventh Schedule of Arbitration and Conciliation Act 2013, can neither be appointed as Arbitrator nor nominate a person as Arbitrator.
  • Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal passed this order while hearing an Arbitration & Conciliation Application U/s 11(4) filed by M.J.S Construction and others.
  • The prayer made in the application filed under Section 11(6) of the Arbitration and Conciliation Application Act, 1996 is for appointment of an Arbitrator for resolution of dispute between the parties.
