Republican Kevin McCarthy New as US House Speaker

  • Republican Kevin McCarthy was elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives in a historic post-midnight 15th ballot, which elevated him to a powerful position in the chamber and is expected to bring an end to political paralysis that the country has seen for days now.
  • McCarthy replaced Nancy Pelosi of the Democratic Party, which lost the majority in the House after the November 8 midterm elections wherein the Republicans won 222 seats in the 435-member House against 212 of the Democrats.
  • McCarthy defeated Hakeem Sekou Jeffries by 216 to 212 votes, in the 15th round of votes.
  • McCarthy became the 55th House speaker after the fifth-longest contest in history.

Silent Valley Bird Species Goes up to 175

  • A bird survey conducted at the Silent Valley National Park, Kerala, in the last week of December 2022, identified 141 species, of which 17 were new. So far, 175 species of birds have been spotted in Silent Valley.
  • The survey held in December 2022 marked the 30th anniversary of the first bird survey in the Silent Valley. Although the first survey was held in the last week of December 1990, the anniversary could not be celebrated in 2020 December because of COVID-19 restrictions.
  • As many as 30 birders and forest staff took part in the bird survey by staying in seven camps inside the core area of the Silent Valley. Wildlife Warden S. Vinod said that another bird survey would soon be held in the buffer zone of the national park.
  • The survey was held in association with the Kerala Natural History Society.

UK Records 2022 as Warmest Year Ever

  • The year 2022 was the warmest year on record for the United Kingdom. Official figures released by country's weather agency showed the latest evidence that climate change is transforming Europe's weather. Across twelve months, the mean temperature in the country was 10.03 degrees Celsius, the highest since comparable records began in 1884. The previous record was 9.88 degrees Celsius set in 2014. With this, UK's 15 of top 20 warmest years on record have all occurred in this century. The top 10 were witnessed within the past two decades alone.
  • Britain is not alone. France's average temperature was above 14 degrees Celsius in 2022, making it the hottest year since weather readings began in 1900. Switzerland's meteorological service said, the alpine nation's annual average temperature of 7.4 degrees Celsius was by far the highest value since measurements began in 1864.

RBI Allows Six Entities to Test Fintech Products to Deal with Financial Frauds under Sandbox Scheme

  • Six entities, including HSBC and Creditwatch, were allowed to test their fintech products to prevent and mitigate financial fraud as part of the fourth cohort under the RBI's regulatory sandbox scheme. Regulatory sandbox refers to the live testing of new products or services in a controlled/test regulatory environment for which the regulators may permit certain relaxations.
  • The Reserve Bank had announced the opening of the fourth cohort under the regulatory sandbox in June 2022 for the prevention and mitigation of financial fraud.
  • The RBI had received nine applications under the fourth cohort, of which six entities were selected for the 'test phase'.
  • The six entities are -- Bahwan Cybertek, Crediwatch Information Analytics, enStage Software (Wibmo), HSBC in collaboration with Wibmo, napID Cybersec and Trusting Social.
  • The selected entities would commence testing their products in February.
  • The regulatory sandbox allows the regulator, innovators, financial service providers and customers to conduct field tests to collect evidence on the benefits and risks of new financial products.
  • The objective of the regulatory sandbox is to foster responsible innovation in financial services, promote efficiency and bring benefits to consumers.

Axis Bank Partners with OPEN to Launch a Fully Digital Current Account

  • Axis Bank partnered with OPEN to provide a fully native digital current account journey for its customers including SMEs (small and medium enterprises), freelancers, homepreneurs, influencers and more. This is the bank's first-ever partnership with a fintech player to launch a fully digital current account. Using this account, customers can avail 250+ banking services and claim up to 50 per cent cashback through grab-deals. With this partnership, all existing Axis Bank account holders also get access to OPEN's all-in-one digital banking platform that is used by over 30 lakh businesses currently.
  • The partnership aims to offer access to Axis Bank's holistic banking services coupled with OPEN's end-to-end financial automation tools for business management like payments, accounting, payroll, compliance, expense management and several other services to a larger business community.

Paytm Payments Bank Appoints Surinder Chawla as MD, CEO

  • Paytm Payments Bank received banking regulator RBI's nod to appoint Surinder Chawla as its Managing Director and CEO.
  • The RBI, however, continues to bar Paytm Payments Bank from on-boarding new customers.
  • Before joining PPBL, Chawla was working with RBL Bank, where he served as Head - Branch Banking and focused on expanding the CASA base, fee revenue, and cross-selling across channels.

  • National Council of Science Museums in association with Nehru Memorial Museum and Library organised Astro Tourism - A Sky Gazing event at Delhi's India Gate. The event was inaugurated by Minister of State for Culture, Arjun Ram Meghwal.
  • Mr. Meghwal said that the programme will help in developing scientific temper among the people.
  • The Astro Tourism event included various activities like Astro talks by expert astronomers, an exhibition on astronomy, storytelling related to celestial objects, an experience of using the telescope to see the craters of the Moon, Astronomy activities, a photographic panel exhibition, and astro-photography.

Manchester City Inks Deal with Reliance Jio to Spur India Push

  • Manchester City Football Club Ltd. signed a partnership with Jio Platforms Ltd., making billionaire Mukesh Ambani's digital services unit its official wireless network partner in India.
  • The English Premier League club's over-the-top platform — called CITY+ — will also be integrated into the JioTV platform providing fans in India further access to exclusive club content including match highlights, live Manchester City Women's team and other fixtures.
  • The pact shows that Ambani's refining-to-retail conglomerate is keen to make inroads in the global sports business and is relying on its dominant telecom network , the largest in India, to win partners.

Sania Mirza to Retire after WTA 1000 Event in Dubai in February

  • Sania Mirza, India's former doubles world number one, said that she would call time on her career aged 36 after next month's Dubai Tennis Championships, after her 2022 retirement plans were delayed due to injury.
  • Mirza, regarded as her country's greatest women's tennis player, has won six Grand Slam doubles titles and will compete in her final major this month at the Australian Open, where she bagged the women's doubles crown in 2016.
  • Mirza became the first Indian to win a WTA singles title, when she won her hometown Hyderabad event in 2005. She broke into the top 30 by 2007 and reached her career-high ranking of world number 27.
  • After being plagued by a recurring, career-threatening wrist injury, Mirza forged a doubles partnership with Swiss great Martina Hingis. The self-styled "Santina" team won 14 titles, including Wimbledon and the U.S. and Australian Opens.

M. Pranesh Becomes India's 79th Grandmaster

  • M. Pranesh from Tamil Nadu clinched the title in the Rilton Cup, the first tournament of the FIDE Circuit, and became India's 79th chess Grandmaster.
  • Pranesh crossed the 2500-rating threshold and became a GM, having completed his three norms before the Rilton Cup.
  • To become a GM, a player has to secure three GM norms and cross the live rating of 2,500 Elo points.
  • Seeded 22nd, the Indian made a clean sweep of the field in Stockholm, winning eight games and finishing a full point ahead of IM Kaan Kucuksari (Sweden) and GM Nikita Meshkovs (Latvia) as the tournament concluded.
  • Pranesh is now the early leader of the FIDE Circuit with 6.8 circuit points that he gets for this victory. The one who accumulates the most points by the end of the year qualifies for the 2024 FIDE Candidates.

Narendra Singh Tomar Inaugurates 'North East Krishi Kumbha-2023'

  • Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar inaugurated the three-day 'North East Krishi Kumbhar-2023' and took part in the 49th Foundation Day celebration of the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam.
  • The Union Minister said that North-east is the heaven of our country and Meghalaya's geographical scenario is such that we can develop it if we try with all our efforts.
  • The Union Minister also said that farmers and farming should always be treated with honour.
  • The highlights of the North East Krishi Kumbha -2023 included live demonstrations and exhibition of recent technologies through 102 stalls, by the host institute and its regional centres along with all the ICAR institutes.

Tanzania Govt Delegation Visits India to Learn about Best Practices in E-governance

  • A five-member delegation led by the Minister of State in the President's Office for Public Service Management and Good Governance of Tanzania, Jenista Joakim Mhagama called on Union Minister Jitendra Singh in New Delhi. While interacting with the Minister, Ms. Mhagama lauded India's governance practices and said that the Tanzanian delegation looks forward to learning from India's vast and varied experience in governance.
  • On this occasion, Singh observed that many of India's best practices in governance are being emulated by other countries of the world. He said that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a number of best governance practices evolved in the last 7-8 years.
  • As per Singh, India and Tanzania share multifaceted relations which in recent years have evolved into a modern and pragmatic relationship with sound political understanding, diversified economic engagement, and people-to-people contacts in the field of education and healthcare.
  • Singh assured Tanzanian Minister that India would be happy to support Tanzania to design and develop a "Performance Management Information System and Public Employee Performance Management Information System" to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public services in Tanzania.

India to Virtually Host Voice of Global South Summit

  • In a new and unique initiative, India will host a special virtual summit, the Voice of Global South summit, on January 12 and 13.
  • "The 'Voice of Global South Summit' under the theme 'Unity of Voice, Unity of Purpose' envisages bringing together countries of the Global South to share their perspectives and priorities on a common platform. More than 120 countries are being invited to participate in this Summit.
  • Global South refers to the developing and the less-developed countries of the world.
  • The initiative is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas and is underpinned by India's philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
  • India will work to ensure that the valuable inputs generated from partner countries in the Voice of Global South Summit deliberations receive due cognizance globally.

Indian Navy Signs Agreement for Autonomous Armed Boat Swarms under SPRINT Initiative

  • The Indian Navy inked an agreement with Sagar Defence Engineering Pvt. Ltd for acquiring armed autonomous boat swarms under the 'SPRINT' initiative, which aims to promote development and usage of indigenous defence technologies by domestic companies. The task of development of this technology is one of the 75 challenges that were introduced by the Indian Navy under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav last year (2022).
  • This is the 50th contract that was signed under 'SPRINT'.
  • Sagar Defence Engineering has the know-how to create the nation's first armed autonomous unmanned boat with swarming capabilities.

Gianluca Vialli,Former Italy and Chelsea Striker Passes Away

  • Gianluca Vialli, the former Italy and Chelsea striker, died aged 58. Gianluca Vialli was an Italian football player and manager who played as a striker. Vialli started his club career at Cremonese in 1980 in his native Italy where he made 105 league appearances scoring 23 goals. His performances impressed Sampdoria who signed him in 1984, and with whom he scored 85 league goals, won three Italian cups, Serie A and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
  • Vialli finished his playing career at the end of the 1998-99 season to focus on management and Chelsea would win the FA Cup and Charity Shield in 2000 under the Italian, before he was sacked early in the 2000-01 season.

Former Bengal and Bihar Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi Dies

  • Former Governor of West Bengal and three-time Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Keshari Nath Tripathi died at his residence in Prayagraj. He was 88.
  • Apart from West Bengal, Tripathi had held additional charge as the Governor of Bihar, Meghalaya and Mizoram.
  • Born on November 10, 1934 in erstwhile Allahabad, Tripathi was also a senior advocate at the Allahabad High Court. He joined RSS when he was just 12.
  • Tripathi was elected MLA for the first time in 1977 from Jhunsi assembly constituency in Prayagraj district. He went on to win six more Assembly elections and his last victory was in 2002 from Allahabad South seat. He contested the 2007 and 2012 Assembly polls too but faced defeat both the times.
  • In a career spanning decades, Tripathi was elected as the Speaker of the UP Assembly under different chief ministers including Kalyan Singh, Rajnath Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta, Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) or Non-Resident Indian Day is observed by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. The day is celebrated on January 9 to highlight the role of the Indian diaspora across the world and their contributions towards the country's progress. The celebration highlights the commitment of the Government of India to maintain and strengthen its ties with the overseas Indian community.
  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is observed on January 9 because it is on this day in 1951 that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi returned from South Africa. He contributed greatly to the cause of India's struggle for freedom against the British and came to be known as the "Father of the Nation."
  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was established in the year 2000, but was first celebrated officially in 2003, in New Delhi. Initially, the day was celebrated annually till 2015, following which the event became a biennial.
  • A particular city is chosen, by The Ministry of External Affairs chooses a city to host the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations and for the year 2023, Indore was chosen to host the event, which will run from January 8 to 10.

Jalna and Nagpur Police Win 'Best Police Units' Award

  • Jalna district police and Nagpur city police in Maharashtra bagged the 'Best Police Unit' awards for 2021 in the state under different classes for maintaining law and order, use of modern technology, evolving community policing and administration.
  • The Jalna police got the award in 'Class A' and the Nagpur police in 'Class B', as per the winners announced by Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Kulwant Sarangal.
  • Police units with less than 6,100 Indian Penal Code cases are grouped in 'Class A', while those with more than 6,100 IPC cases are grouped in 'Class B', according to a police circular.
  • The police units were evaluated on the basis of their performance on 45 pre-selected parameters.

CJI D. Y. Chandrachud to be Conferred With "Award for Global Leadership" By Harvard Law School Center On Legal Profession

  • The Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession (HLS CLP) announced Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud as the 2022 recipient of its "Award for Global Leadership" in recognition of his lifetime service to the legal profession in India and across the world. The award will be presented to him in a virtual event on January 11, 2023.
  • The "Award for Global Leadership" is the Centre's highest professional honour.
  • The Centre brings together leading academics, legal practitioners, and thought leaders to honour and recognise individuals whose achievements have been impactful to the legal profession.

S. S. Rajamouli Wins Best Director for RRR at New York Film Critics Circle

  • S. S. Rajamouli made history by winning several awards in the West for his pet project, RRR, starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan. The filmmaker won the Best Director award at the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) in the US. When his name was announced, a section of the attendees gave him a standing ovation and encouraged him. The filmmaker accepted the award and said that the West reacted to RRR the same way Indians did.
  • S. S. Rajamouli's RRR is a fictional story based on the lives of Telugu freedom fighters, Alluri Seetharama Raju and Komaram Bheem, played by Ram Charan and Jr NTR, respectively. The film's story is written by Vijayendra Prasad. For the uninitiated, RRR was submitted in 14 categories at the Oscars 2023 and won two nominations at the Golden Globes 2023.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh Inaugurates National Genome Editing & Training Centre

  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated "National Genome Editing & Training Centre" at National Agri-food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) Mohali, Punjab. The Minister also, at the same time, inaugurated a 4-day International Conference on Food and Nutritional Security 2023: – iFANS.
  • "National Genome Editing & Training Centre" (NGETC) is a one-roof state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a national platform to cater to the regional needs to adapt different genome editing methods, including CRISPR-Cas9 mediated genome modification. It will also empower young researchers by providing them with training and guidance about its know-how and application in crops. In the current climatic scenario, improving crops for better nutrition and tolerance to the changing environmental condition is a significant challenge. Genome editing could be a promising technology that Indian research could adapt to offer the desired tailor-made traits in crops.
  • The International Conference on Food and Nutritional Security (iFANS-2023) will be jointly organized by the National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), Centre for Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB), National Institute of Plant Biotechnology (NIPB), and International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) at NABI, Mohali.
  • The 4-day conference brainstormed how genome editing could enhance the country's food and nutritional security under changing climate in the country. The conference had multiple sessions with as many speakers from 15 different countries. They shared their experience through their contribution to plant sciences in the frontier areas of their research.

Tripura Launches 'Saharsh' in All Govt., Govt-Aided Schools

  • In an effort to encourage social and emotional learning, the Tripura government introduced a special education programme titled 'Saharsh'.
  • The 'Saharsh' was launched in August 2022 in 40 schools of the state on a pilot basis. It was extended to all government and aided schools of the state now.
  • A similar programme, which was found to be effective in social and economic development in research studies of Harvard and Columbia Universities, is being contextualised with local realities of India before implementing in Tripura.

Purple, First Inclusion Festival of India Concludes in Goa

  • The Purple Fest, Celebrating Diversity, the state's first-ever inclusive festival for people with disabilities (PwDs), took place in Goa. Panjim hosted the festival from January 6–8, 2023, with all the fanfare.
  • The three-day festival's purpose was to demonstrate to everyone how to promote diversity in our society and how to help one another.
  • The Goa State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, in collaboration with the Goa Directorate of Social Welfare and Entertainment Society, held the Purple Fest.
  • The festival received thousands of entries, and delegates from throughout the nation anticipated attended and took part in this magnificent celebration.
  • For Goan delegates and students with impairments, the programme was free, the rest has to pay a registration fee.
  • The Purple Fest featured a variety of entertaining live performances, including stand-up comedy, dance, and music events, among many other engaging activities.

International Kite Festival 2023 Begins in Ahmedabad, Gujarat

  • After a hiatus of two years, International Kite Festival 2023 began in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
  • The Kite Festival was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. Kite fliers from 65 countries will take part in the Kite Festival, which will be held in four Gujarat cities.
  • International Kite Festival with the theme of G20 will be held from the January 8 to 14.
  • Since 1989, the city of Ahmedabad has hosted the International Kite Festival as part of the official celebration of uttarayan, bringing master kite makers and flyers from all over the world to demonstrate their unique creations and wow the crowds with highly unusual kites. In past years, master kite makers from Malaysia have brought their wau-balang kites, llayang-llayanghave come from Indonesia, kite innovators from the USA have arrived with giant banner kites, and Japanese rokkaku fighting kites have shared the skies with Italian sculptural kites, Chinese flying dragons, and the latest high-tech modern wonders.

  • As per Sanyal, his new book is on the revolutionary movements related to the struggle for Indian Independence.
  • Sanyal, has authored best-selling books including "Land of the Seven Rivers," "The Ocean of Churn," "India in the Age of Ideas," and "The Indian Renaissance."
  • In addition to his work as an economist and author, Sanyal served as the Principal Economic Adviser to the Finance Minister of India for five years until February 2022. He is currently part of Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council.

Karnataka's Heritage Cities Mysuru, Hampi Among Sites to be Developed under Centre's Swadesh Darshan 2.0 Scheme

  • Karnataka's Hampi and Mysuru were enlisted in the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 Scheme, a Central Sector scheme launched in 2014-15 by Ministry of Tourism & Culture to promote, develop & harness potential of tourism & integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits.
  • Two locations each from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Goa, Gujarat and Kerala were selected for the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 project. Among these, Hampi and Mysore in Karnataka were also selected.
  • Swadesh Darshan scheme is a new milestone in the tourism development path of the country. There is no shortage of places to visit in India.

Petition Challenging Appointment of NUALS Registrar Withdrawn from Karnataka High Court

  • A petitioner withdrew his plea from Karnataka High Court, which challenged the appointment of Mahadev M.G. as Registrar of the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS).
  • The Division Bench of Justice K. Vinod Chandran and Justice C. Jayachandran, during the hearing, told the petitioner to file a representation before the UGC, considering the appointment was made in 2014.
  • After the Counsel for the petitioner asked for permission to withdraw the petition, the High Court granted the same.
  • Advocate Sanjai D. Rajan had argued in his petition that the appointment of the Registrar of NUALS was made in violation of the University Grants Commission Regulations and mandates.
