Nepal's Former TV Anchor Lamichhane Becomes Deputy PM, Home Minister

  • Rabi Lamichhane, a former TV anchor whose newly-launched party won a surprisingly huge mandate in the November 20 elections, joined Nepal's new government led by former Maoist rebel chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda as the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.
  • Lamichhane's Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which was formed just months ago, won 20 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives and is the third largest party among the ruling alliance.

Serbia is Terminating Visa-free entry for Indians

  • With an intention to control illegal immigration and follow the requirements of the European visa policy, the government of Serbia decided to end visa-free travel for Indians. According to the statement, from January 1, 2023, Indian passport holders will no longer have the luxury of traveling to Serbia without a valid visa.
  • Earlier, diplomatic and official Indian passport holders were allowed to visit the country for 90 days without any visa, while the duration was 30 days for ordinary passport holders.
  • Earlier, Indian citizens with ordinary passports and other necessary travel documents did not require a visa to enter Serbia. Indians could also live, without a visa, in the country for a period of 30 days a year. However, the Government of Serbia has now withdrawn this existing arrangement keeping in mind the requirements of the European Union visa policy.
  • The new change in visa rule will not be applicable to Indians who have a valid Schengen, UK and US visa, or a residence permit for any of these countries. The statement from the embassy mentioned that Indian passport holders having a visa or permit from these nations will continue to be allowed visa-free entry into Serbia on or after January 1 for a period of up to 90 days.

'Bomb Cyclone' Winter Storm Hits US with Life Threatening Extremely Cold Climate

  • Bomb Cyclone thrashed US and Canada with extreme climate and has trapped the residents inside their houses with snow and power outages. During the Christmas season, the Bomb Cyclone occurred due to a low temperature of -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Thousands of flights were cancelled and several highways were blocked. People were advised not to step outside their homes as was be life-threatening.
  • Due to Artic Blast, the US experienced an extremely cold climate, heavy snow, and intense wind. The authorities ordered to put a halt on travelling during the Christmas season because of the Bomb Cyclone.
  • Bomb Cyclone is created when the air of different masses whether cold or dry comes together. The warm air rises and makes a cloud system which lowers the air pressure. These cloud system forms storms and circulates counter clockwise in the low-pressure area. A Bomb Cyclone is a mid-latitude storm in which the central pressure drops fast at one millibar per hour for 24 hours.

RBI's Revised Bank Locker Rules to Come into Effect from 1st January

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that all leading banks should issue the locker agreement to its holders before January 1, 2023, as the new locker rules will be implemented from that date. Earlier, the RBI had announced revised guidelines on August 8, 2021, which became effective from January 1, 2022. And now, all the locker owners must display their eligibility for a new locker arrangement and sign a renewal agreement prior to January 1, 2023.
  • The central bank directed all lenders to use the Indian Banks' Association IBA-drafted Model Locker Agreement, in line with the Supreme Court's orders and guidelines. RBI has instructed banks to ensure that any "unfair terms or conditions" are not covered in their locker agreements. The revised guidelines add that the terms of the agreement shall not be more "onerous than required in ordinary course of business" to secure the interests of the bank.
  • RBI advises the banks to install CCTV camera at entry and exit points of the strong room and the common areas of operation. It mandates to preserve its recording for a period of not less than 180 days.
  • According to the guidelines, if any customer has complained to the bank that his/her locker is opened without his/her knowledge and authority, or any theft or security breach is noticed/observed, the bank shall preserve the CCTV recording till the police investigation is completed and the dispute is settled.

RBI Emerges as the Largest Gold Buyer among the Central Banks across the Globe

  • With 132.34 metric tonnes (MT) of gold purchase, RBI emerged as the largest buyer of the yellow metal among central banks between April 2020 and September 2022. Also, RBI was the top gold buyer among its peers in 2020 while it stood third in 2021. In 2020, it bought 41.68 MT of gold while in 2021 and 2022 (till September end) it bought 77.5 MT and 31.25 MT, respectively.
  • Every major central bank keeps a portion of its reserves in gold as it plays a fine hedging instrument in the time of uncertainty and economic turmoil. During the balance of payment crisis in 1990-91, Indian government pledged 67 MT of gold to the Bank of England and Union Bank of Switzerland.

SpiceJet Shareholders Approve Re-appointment of Ajay Singh as Director

  • Shareholders of SpiceJet approved the re-appointment of Ajay Singh as a director of the no-frills airline.
  • At the annual general meeting, the shareholders also gave their nod for the adoption of audited financial statements for financial year ended March 31, 2022.
  • Currently, Singh is the Chairman and Managing Director of the no-frills airline.
  • Singh was originally appointed as director on November 4, 2004 and subsequently resigned on August 27, 2010. Thereafter, he was appointed as Managing Director of the company on May 21, 2015.

Football Player, Beth Mead Wins BBC Sports Personality of Year 2022 Award

  • Beth Mead was awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2022 as she was the player of the tournament and top scorer at Euro 2022. Beth Mead defeated Germany in the final at Wembley to win England's first major women's football trophy. She competed against Ben Stokes and Ronnie O'Sullivan for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2022 award.
  • England secured their first major trophy for the first time since 1966.
  • They also won the team of the year and coach of the year for Sarina Wiegman.
  • England's Cricketer Ben Stokes was second with winter Olympics curling champion Eve Muirhead third.
  • Bethany Jane Mead was born on 9th May 1995. She is an English Professional footballer who plays forward for the women's super league club Arsenal and the England national team. At UEFA Women's Euro 2022, she became the Golden Boot Winner, Player of the Tournament, and top assist provider, leading England to win a major tournament for the first time.

Lovlina, Nikhat Win National Boxing gold, Railways Lift Team Trophy

  • Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain and reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen registered contrasting wins to clinch gold, while Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) lifted the team trophy with 10 medals at the Elite Women's National Boxing Championships in Bhopal.
  • Assam's Lovlina beat Arundhati Choudhary of the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) 5-0 in the 75 kg final, while Nikhat faced a stiff challenge from RSPB's Anamika in the 50 kg clash and won the match in her favour 4-1 to defend the title.

Cricket Australia Renames Test Player of the Year Award in Honour of Shane Warne

  • Australia's men's Test Player of the Year award was renamed to honour legendary spinner Shane Warne.
  • The Shane Warne Men's Test Player of the Year award will be presented annually at the Australian Cricket Awards.
  • Cricket Australia (CA) chief executive Nick Hockley and Australian Cricketers' Association CEO Todd Greenber, announced the renaming of the award during the Boxing Day Test against South Africa as a tribute to Warne.

Garuda Aerospace Receives Type Certification and RTPO Approvals from DGCA

  • Drone manufacturer Garuda Aerospace received the Type Certification and RPTO (Remote Pilot Training Organisation) approvals from the Director General of Civil Aviation for the indigenously designed kisan drones. DGCA Type certification is provided on the basis of the quality check and is issued after a rigorous testing process of the unmanned aerial vehicles.
  • The kisan drones are developed for agricultural purposes and with the Type Certification received for the GA-AG model, Garuda Kisan drones were eligible for Rs. 10 lakh unsecured loans from the agri-infrastructure fund offered by the Centre.
  • According to DGCA, a remote pilot training organisation is an organisation authorised by the DGCA to impart remote pilot training to any individual seeking for a remote pilot certificate under Rule 34 of Drone Rules 2021.

Santosh Yadav is New NHAI Chief

  • Senior bureaucrat Santosh Kumar Yadav was appointed as chairman of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
  • Yadav is a 1995-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre.
  • Subhasish Panda, a 1997-batch IAS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, was appointed as Delhi Development Authority (DDA) vice chairman.
  • Ganji Kamala V Rao was named Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • Rao is a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre.
  • He has served as the Chairman and Managing Director of India Tourism Development Corporation Ltd in the rank and pays Of Additional Secretary by the Appointment Committee of Cabinet. He has also served as the Principal Secretary of, the General Administration Department, Government of Kerala in Trivandrum.
  • FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standard Authority of India. It is a statutory body under the Ministry of health and family welfare, the Government of India. The FSSAI was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, of 2006.

Former Central Railway GM Lahoti Appointed Railway Board CEO and Chairman

  • Anil Kumar Lahoti was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Railway Board. The former General Manager of Central Railway was appointed as Member (Infrastructure) of the board a week ago, and will be taking over the chairmanship from Vinay Kumar Tripathi on January 1.
  • Lahoti belongs to the 1984 batch of Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), and his appointment is a part of an overhaul at the top management of the railway board.

International Day of Epidemic Preparedness

  • International Day of Epidemic Preparedness on December 27 serves the purpose of creating awareness about epidemics. This day encourages every individual, every institution, and every government to prepare its citizens in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national contexts and priorities, through education and awareness-raising activities, in order to highlight the importance of the prevention of, preparedness for, and partnership against epidemics.
  • In its 75th session and 36th plenary meeting on December 7, 2020, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution which declared December 27 as the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness. The decision is part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The declaration recognised the "devastating impacts of major infectious diseases and epidemics," especially of the current COVID-19 pandemic, on people's lives and the long-term damage to social and economic development. The UN General Assembly also noted how the present pandemic had overwhelmed the medical faculty and health systems globally, disrupted supply chains and disproportionately affected the livelihoods of people in poorer countries.

Karnataka Passes Bill on Hiked Quota for SC/ST in Educational Institutes

  • The Karnataka Assembly unanimously passed a Bill enhancing reservation for SC/STs in government educational institutions and State government services.
  • The Bill proposes to increase the quota for the Scheduled Castes from 15 per cent to 17 per cent and for Scheduled Tribes from 3 per cent to 7 per cent.
  • The Bill aims to replace the ordinance passed by the government in October 2022.
  • Welcoming the Bill, the Opposition said that the new reservation policy would not benefit the targeted people as government jobs were curtailed due to privatisation.
  • The Opposition said the government should make provision for reservation in the private sector too.

Odisha Govt. Health Scheme Helps over 600,000 poor People Get Free Treatment

  • Over 6 lakh people belonging to poor families in Odisha availed of cashless and free treatment in several private hospitals under the state government's health scheme, Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY), in 2022.
  • As many as 6.31 lakh poor people, having either the BSKY smart card or the PDS card, were provided high-quality and free treatment in different speciality hospitals in the private sector from January 1 to December 25, 2022.
  • The information was revealed at a performance review meeting chaired by Health and Family Welfare secretary Shalini Pandit.
  • The state government has paid around Rs. 1,389 crore to the empanelled private sector hospitals towards free treatment of the poor patients.

IIT Madras' Courses Win Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Awards

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) won key recognition in Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Awards, which is often referred to as 'the Oscars of Education.'
  • This time, IIT madras' BS in Data Science and Applications won a silver prize in the 'Best Online Program' category. Additionally, NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning), a joint initiative of IITs and IISc, won the gold in the 'Lifelong Learning category.'
  • The IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications was awarded the best online degree programme for providing a hybrid mode of teaching/learning facilities, utilising multimedia and a combination of electronic and traditional educational models.

Allahabad High Court Directs Uttar Pradesh Government to Hold Municipal Elections without OBC Reservation

  • The Allahabad High Court, while observing that Uttar Pradesh was yet to fulfil the Triple Test Formality, as laid down by the Supreme Court, directed the state government to conduct the Municipal Elections without OBC reservation.
  • The Division Bench of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Saurabh Lavania passed this judgement on the bunch of petitions raising alleged grievance arising out of a notification dated 05.12.2022 issued by the State Government in the Department of Urban Development which is a draft order in terms of section 9-A (5)(3) of Uttar Pradesh Municipalities Act, 1916, inviting objections to the proposed determination of number of offices of the Chairpersons of different Municipal Bodies to be reserved for the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and Women.
  • Challenge, however, is confined to the proposed determination for providing reservation to the Backward Class of citizens in respect of seats and offices of Chairpersons of these bodies.
