HPCL Forays into Petrochemical Business, Launches HP Durapol

  • Maharatna oil company Hindustan Petroleum Corporation made a foray into the petrochemical business through polymer marketing with the launch of polymer brand 'HP Durapol'.
  • The Secretary for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Pankaj Jain, launched the HPCL's first polymer brand in the presence of HPCL Chairman and Managing Director Push Kumar Joshi and senior officials from the ministry. They inaugurated the brand, logo, product brochure and package for the polymer products.
  • As per the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, HP Durapol would cover various grades of high-density polyethylene, linear low-density polyethylene and poly propylene.

SBI Funds Management Appoints Shamsher Singh as New MD, CEO of Company

  • SBI Funds Management Ltd appointed Shamsher Singh as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company.
  • Singh, who was Deputy Managing Director at State Bank of India (SBI), took over the charge from Vinay M. Tonse following his repatriation to the public sector lender.
  • Singh has more than 32 years of rich experience working with SBI in various verticals, including investment banking, treasury, corporate banking and branch banking. He had joined SBI as probationary officer in June 1990 and moved up the ranks to become deputy MD by successfully managing leadership roles across domains besides serving international stints in the US, Bahrain and UAE.

Aloke Singh to be Chief of Air India's Low Cost Carrier Business

  • The Air India management appointed Air India Express CEO Aloke Singh as the chief of Air India's low-cost airline business from January 1, 2023.
  • The Low Cost Carrier (LCC) business will consist of AirAsia India and Air India Express. In November 2022, Air India signed agreements to complete the acquisition of 100 per cent shareholding in AirAsia India (AAI) and to subsidiarise it under Air India.

Goa to Host First Ever World Table Tennis (WTT) Series Event in India

  • Goa will host India's first ever World Table Tennis (WTT) series event from February 27 to March 5. The top tier WTT Star Contender Goa 2023 will take place at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor stadium, located at the Goa University Campus. Stupa Analytics, a homegrown sports analytics firm, will be the tournament host with active support from the Goa government.
  • WTT Series is the official professional table tennis series of events, with the world's best players facing each other off in various category tournaments throughout the year with the four Grand Smashes being the ultimate prize to win.
  • World Table Tennis (WTT) was created by the International Table Tennis Federation in 2019 to create and manage professional men's and women's Table Tennis events around the world. The WTT organizes a series of events around the year and the highest ranked tournament being the four Grand Smashes.

'Veer Guardian 23': India, Japan to Conduct First-ever Air Combat Exercise

  • India and Japan are set to conduct their first-ever bilateral combat air exercise over 10 days in Japan next month (January 2023).
  • The exercise named 'Veer Guardian 23' will be conducted from January 16 to January 26. The Japan Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF) will conduct a bilateral fighter training with the Indian Air Force (IAF).
  • The exercise aims to promote mutual understanding and strengthen defence cooperation between the air forces.
  • IAF will be fielding its Russian-origin Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft drawn from a squadron under the Western Air Command.
  • Japan will field its F-2 jets which are derivatives of the F-16 plane of the US. It will also field the F-15, like the oones used by the US too.
  • The exercise will at Hyakuri Air Base north-west of Tokyo.

  • India celebrates National Consumer Rights Day on December 24 every year to spread awareness about consumer rights and responsibilities. This day commemorates the day when Consumer Protection Act received the assent of the President on December 24, 1986 and came into force. Since then, National Consumer Rights Day is celebrated each year to educate people about their rights as consumers.

  • The prestigious 'Sahitya Akademi Award' for 2022 will be conferred on authors Badri Narayan and Anuradha Roy.
  • Narayan would be conferred the award for his collection of poems in Hindi titled 'Tumadi Ke Shabd'.
  • Roy will be awarded the award for her novel 'All the Lives We Never Lived' in English and Anis Ashfaq for his novel 'Khwab Sarab' in Urdu.
  • The awards announced for 23 languages include seven poetry collections, six novels, two story collections, two literary criticisms, three plays and one autobiography.

Indian Scientist Professor Thalappil Pradeep Receives VinFuture Special Prize 2022

  • Renowned researcher and Madras IIT Professor Pradeep Thalappil bagged the VinFuture Prize 2022 instituted by the VinFuture Prize Council to honour breakthrough research projects.
  • Thalappil was awarded the 'Special Prize dedicated to Innovators from Developing Countries' for his development of a low-cost filtration system to remove arsenic and other heavy metals from groundwater. The prize consists of a purse of Rs. 4 crore.
  • The award was presented by Prize Council Chairman Richard Friend at a ceremony in Vietnam's capital Hanoi.

Piyush Goyal Tables Jan Vishwas Bill in Lok Sabha for Ease of Doing Business

  • Commerce and industry Minister Piyush Goyal introduced Jan Vishwas Bill in Lok Sabha, which seeks to decriminalise minor offences by amending 183 provisions in 42 Acts with a view to promote ease of business.
  • The Bill was later referred to a 31-member joint committee of Parliament for scrutiny. It proposes to amend 183 provisions across 42 Acts administered by 19 ministries. Introducing the Bill, Goyal said that there are many laws in the country, under which punishment provisions are there for minor offences and for that people have to approach courts.

UI Ranks MAHE as most Sustainable University in India

  • The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) was ranked number-one in the country, as per the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Green Metric World University rankings. A total of 1,050 universities from 85 countries participated in the ranking in which MAHE was also awarded the 121st world's most sustainable university in the year 2022.
  • MAHE's total score for the ranking was 8050 in six criteria of setting and infrastructure, education and research, energy and climate change, waste, water and transportation.
  • The ranking is a recognition of green campus and environmental sustainability initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010. It measures each participating university's commitment to developing an environment-friendly and sustainable university.

Petroleum Ministry Organises Musical Event 'Dance to Decarbonise'

  • The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas organised a one-day event called 'Dance to Decarbonise', where renewable energy generated through dance was used to charge electric vehicles. This unique event held on December 23, 2022, at National Stadium, India Gate, in New Delhi was a run-up to the India Energy Week that will be held in Bangalore in the month of February 2022.
  • The event aimed at showcasing India's target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 weighing against the country's growing economy, rising energy requirements, and the implementation of responsible energy sources over transformational energy systems for the future.

Assam Grants Industry Status to its Tourism Sector

  • As the growth in the tourism sector is vital for socio-economic development in a state, the Assam State Cabinet led by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma approved the proposal for grant of industrial status to the tourism sector in the state.
  • It has been highlighted that with such industry status, fresh investments in tourism infrastructures permanent in nature will contribute towards rapid employment generation, public-private partnership and infrastructure development.
  • With the grant of industry status to the tourism sector, now, restaurants, cafeterias, health clubs, spas and wellness centres among others are eligible for incentives under the industrial policy. This move will further encourage and boost private investment in the above areas of the tourism sector.

Allahabad High Court Directs Registrar General to Identify Unruly Advocates

  • The Allahabad High Court directed the Registrar General to conduct a discreet inquiry and submit a report identifying the unruly advocates.
  • The Division Bench of Justice Suneet Kumar and Justice Syed Waiz Mian dismissed a petition filed by a practising advocate seeking the transfer of a case on the ground of an unfair investigation being conducted by the police.
  • Additional General Advocate, at the outset makes a statement before the High Court that the relief claimed by the petitioner with regard to transfer of the investigation, the Commissioner of Police, has transferred the investigation to the Crime Branch. He further submitted that on the allegations made by the petitioner with regard to the unfair investigation, an inquiry has been set up on the administrative side on the alleged conduct of the police officials.
