India, China and Russia Abstain on First UNSC Resolution against Myanmar

  • India, China and Russia abstained in the UN Security Council on a draft resolution that demanded an immediate end to violence in Myanmar and urged the military junta to release political prisoners, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
  • The 15-nation Security Council, under India's Presidency this month, adopted the resolution after 12 members voted in favour, none against and India, China and Russia abstained.
  • This is the first Security Council resolution adopted on Myanmar in 74 years. The only other UNSC resolution on Myanmar was in 1948 after the country formerly known as Burma got independence from Britain when the Council recommended to the General Assembly that the Union of Burma be admitted to membership in the United Nations.

Worldline ePayments India Receives RBI Nod to Act as Payment Aggregator

  • Digital payments services platform Worldline ePayments India received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India to act as a payment aggregator (PA).
  • The authorisation by the RBI was under the provisions of the Guidelines on Regulation of Payment dated March 17, 2020.
  • Worldline ePayments India, part of Worldline group, offers solutions for all sorts of payment needs offering in-store, online, and omnichannel payments to its customers.

Delhi Leads with Highest Crypto Adoption in India: CoinSwitch

  • CoinSwitch, a cryptocurrency trading platform in an annual investor report informed that New Delhi had the highest cryptocurrency adoption in India followed by Jaipur, measured in terms of value invested.
  • According to the report, India's Portfolio 2022, providing an insight into how the country responded to a year of rising inflation, market downturns, and landmark events such as the Ethereum Merge.
  • An insight from the report was that investing patterns followed by men and women were largely similar in India, though, at 8%, women represent a small albeit growing pie of India's crypto investors.

NASA Formally Retires Mars InSight Lander after 4-year Mission

  • NASA formally retired its Mars InSight lander, the first robotic probe specially designed to study the deep interior of a distant world, four years after it arrived on the surface of the red planet (Mars).
  • Mission controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) near Los Angeles determined the mission was over when two consecutive attempts to re-establish radio contact with the lander failed, a sign that InSight's solar-powered batteries had run out of energy.
  • InSight landed on Mars in late November 2018 with instruments designed to detect planetary seismic rumblings never before measured anywhere but Earth, and its original two-year mission was later extended to four.
  • From its perch in a vast and relatively flat plain called Elysium Planitia just north of the planet's equator, the lander has helped scientists gain new understanding of Mars' internal structure.
  • Researchers said InSight's data revealed the thickness of the planet's outer crust, the size and density of its inner core and the structure of the mantle that lies in between.

Viacom18 Gets Broadcast Rights of Olympic Games Paris 2024

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Viacom18 Media Private Limited (Viacom18) secured the exclusive media rights to broadcast the Olympic Games Paris 2024, plus non-exclusive rights to the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024, in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Through the agreement, Viacom18 will provide multi-platform coverage of the Games, and free-to-air television coverage within the region. In 2024 Olympics will be hosted by France in Paris, beginning from July 26 to August 11.
  • The IOC works with media companies worldwide to ensure that as many people as possible can experience the magic of the Olympic Games. The Olympic media partnerships also contribute valuable revenue that provides the long-term financial security of the Olympic Movement.
  • The next Olympic Games will be held in Paris, France, from 26 July to 11 August 2024, and in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, in Italy, in 2026.

Suhel Ajaz Khan Named India's New Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

  • Indian Foreign Service official of 1997 batch, Suhel Ajaz Khan who is presently the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Lebanon was appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He will replace Ausaf Sayeed, a 1989 batch IFS officer. Khan is expected to take up the assignment shortly.

Defence Ministry's iDEX-DIO Signs its 150th Innovation Contract

  • The Defence Ministry signed the 150th contract for defence innovation under a framework called "iDEX" that was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.
  • Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) is the flagship initiative of the Department of Defence Production and it was rolled out to encourage start-ups and other such entities engaged in defence innovation.
  • The 150th contract was signed by Joint Secretary (Defence Industries Production) & Additional CEO/DIO Anurag Bajpai with CEO, Altair Infrasec Pvt Ltd Anil Anand in the presence of Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and other senior civil & military officials of Ministry of Defence in New Delhi on 21 December, 2022.

Gamaka Exponent H.R. Keshava Murthy Passes Away

  • Gamaka exponent and Padma Shri awardee H. R. Keshava Murthy passed away at his residence in Shivamogga district of Karnataka. He was 89.
  • Murthy was born in a Gamaka artists' family and got his training from his father.
  • Over the decades he has presented hundreds of programmes and trained many students. Through his performances, he publicised noted Kannada epics. Hosahalli, his native place, is known for many music talents.
  • Keshava Murthy has been honored with many awards inlcuding Shantala Natya Shri award, by the State government and different cultural organisations.
  • Gamaka, also known as kaavya vaachana, is a form of storytelling by singing that originated in Karnataka, India. One person reads a stanza of a poem with highest emphasis on meaning, applying suitable raga or a dhaati (melodic line), usually matching the emotion of the poem; the song generally has no established rhythm.
  • Another person then explains the meaning of the stanza with examples and anecdotes. Gamaka draws ragas from Kannada folk music, Yakshagana and Carnatic music. The singing itself is called gamaka and the singer a gamaki. The explanation of the rendering is called vyakyana. The emphasis in kaavya vaachana is on literature (Saahithya) and not on music where singer splits, compounds words in poems to make them easier to understand.

Kisan Diwas

  • Every year, India observes Farmers' Day or Kisan Diwas on December 23. Farmers are the driving force of the country's economy and deserve to be honoured. The day also celebrates the birth of the fifth Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh, who started as a farmer before earning his seat in the government. This day aims to promote awareness of the importance of farmers and their valuable contribution to the overall social- and economic development of the nation.
  • Chaudhary Charan Singh is a remarkable testimony to the fact that, despite having humble beginnings and living a plain lifestyle, one can go on to do great things. Kisan Diwas is celebrated on December 23 to honour the anniversary of this great man's birth.

Sudeep Sen, Shobhana Kumar Won Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize 2021-22

  • The Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize 2021-22 was jointly won by Sudeep Sen for his genre and formbender Anthropocene: Climate Change, Contagion, Consolation (Pippa Rann Books & Media, 2021) and Shobhana Kumar for her haibun collection A Sky Full of Bucket Lists (Red River, 2021).
  • The winners, awarded $10,000 and a Rabindranath Tagore statuette, were picked from a shortlist of 11 at India International Centre, with the Tagore Prize for social achievement going to Sanjoy K. Roy, producer of the Jaipur Literature Festival.
  • The Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize was started in 2018 to annually recognise literary and social accomplishments. In 2020, the award was won by Raj Kamal Jha, Chief Editor, The Indian Express, for The City and The Sea (2019, Penguin Books), and in 2019, it was awarded posthumously to Kabir for One Hundred Poems of Kabir, translated by Rabindranath Tagore.

J&K LG Manoj Sinha Announces 3 New Schemes for J&K

  • Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha announced three New Schemes- Holistic Development of Agriculture & Allied Sectors, Aspirational Towns, and Aspirational Panchayat for J&K Union Territory. These Projects were approved by the Administrative Council, chaired by the Lt Governor.
  • Speaking on the occasion Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha said, J&K is determined to move forward to touch new heights of success. He said, the projects which have now been approved by the administrative council, have an outlay of Rs. 5013 crore.
  • Over the next five years, these projects would transform the agriculture economy of J&K putting it on a new trajectory of growth with doubling the output of the sectors and making them sustainable and commercially viable. Lt. Governor said, this will herald a new phase of farmer prosperity and rural livelihood security in J&K.

Guru Nanak Dev University Becomes only University in India to Get A Grade by NAAC

  • The Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar got A grade by scoring 3.85 points in National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grading, thereby becoming the only University in India to get this score. GNDU is the only State/Central/Private University in India to get this score. Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is the only other educational institution with a higher grade of 3.89 in the country.
  • This assessment is based on set of seven criteria under different key aspects based on the functioning and organizational focus. These criteria include Curricular aspects, Teaching-learning and evaluation, Research, innovations and extension; Infrastructure and Learning resources; Student Support and Progression; Governance, Leadership and Management; Institutional Values and Best Practices.
  • The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) was established in 1994 as an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission (UGC) with its Headquarter in Bengaluru. The NAAC conducts assessment and accreditation of Higher Educational Institutions such as colleges, universities or other recognised institutions to derive an understanding of the 'Quality Status' of the institution.

Kerala Set to Host First International Beach Festival

  • The 'Spice Coast' in the far north of Kerala, better known as North Malabar, will bask in myriad colours and the pomp and splendour of the cultural extravaganza titled 'Bekal International Beach Festival' from December 24.
  • Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the 10-day first international beach festival, that captures the wholeness and the essence of the district's cultural and artistic uniqueness and displays the rich cultural diversity and grandeur of the country, at the majestic Bekal Beach Park.
  • The festival which also aims at revitalising the district's development by showcasing its potential, will offer a feast of cultural and musical nights, along with food festivals that capture the cuisine of Kasargod, exhibitions, and tour programmes.

CJI Constitutes Committee to Conduct Accessibility Audit of SC Premises

  • In a bid to remove the barriers to access, Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud constituted a committee headed by apex court judge Justice S. Ravindra Bhat to conduct an audit of "physical and functional access" of the top court premises to make them disabled friendly.
  • The 'Supreme Court Committee on Accessibility' was given a broad mandate to prepare and release a questionnaire for persons with disabilities, including the apex court employees, advocates, litigants and interns, who visit the top court premises to assess the nature and extent of problems they face.
  • According to a notice uploaded on the apex court website, the committee will prepare a report on the accessibility audit, result of the survey of persons with disability and recommendations/proposals geared towards removing the barriers to access.
