EU Adopts Global Minimum 15% Tax on Multinationals

  • The European Union adopted a plan for a global minimum 15% tax on big business.
  • Leaders gave their final approvals after months of political wrangling.
  • The landmark deal between nearly 140 countries aims to stop governments racing to cut taxes in a bid to attract companies.
  • It was praised by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen as "an historic agreement which helps even the playing field".
  • Corporation tax is usually based on a company's profits. But often they might be able to pay less depending on where their offices are registered or how they invest in their business.
  • The newly-approved plan was drawn up under with the guidance of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and already had the backing of Washington and several major EU economies.

IDFC FIRST Bank Launches ZERO Fee Banking on Savings Accounts

  • IDFC FIRST Bank announced ZERO Fee Banking on savings accounts and waived fees on 25 commonly used banking services.
  • The banking services include savings accounts such as cash deposit and withdrawal at branches, third party cash transactions, demand drafts, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS, cheque book, SMS alerts, interest certificates, insufficient balance for ATM transactions, international ATM usage and so on.
  • Even customers maintaining as low as Rs. 10,000 as average monthly balance (AMB), as well as the Rs. 25,000 AMB savings account variant will enjoy these benefits. This will benefit all customers, and particularly those with lesser financial literacy who find it difficult to compute the fees and charges.

Indian Bank Launches Special Retail Term Deposit "Ind Shakti 555 Days"

  • Indian Bank launched a new special retail term deposit dubbed as "Ind Shakti 555 days" offering higher rate of interest for investment starting from Rs. 5000 to less than 2 Crore for 555 days in the form of FD/MMD with callable options."
  • The bank is giving an interest rate of 2.80% on deposits that mature in the next 7 to 29 days, and Indian Bank is offering an interest rate of 3.00% on deposits that mature in the next 30 to 45 days. On deposits maturing in 46 days to 90 days, Indian Bank is giving an interest rate of 3.25%, and on deposits maturing in 91 days to 120 days, the bank is promising an interest rate of 3.50%. FDs with maturities between 121 and 180 days will now pay interest at a rate of 3.85%, while those with maturities between 181 and less than nine months will now pay interest at a rate of 4.50%.
  • The bank is giving an interest rate of 4.75% on FDs maturing in 9 months to less than 1 year, whereas Indian Bank is offering an interest rate of 6.10% on those maturing in 1 year. The interest rate offered by Indian Bank is 6.30% for deposits maturing in less than 2 years and less than 3 years, and 6.50% for deposits maturing in less than 2 years and under three years. Deposits maturing in the next three to five years will now pay 6.25% interest, while those maturing in the next five years or more will now pay 6.10% interest.

Wipro Consumer Enters food Category; Acquires Nirapara

  • Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting signed an agreement to acquire Nirapara, one of the largest-selling traditional food brands in Kerala, for an undisclosed sum, to foray into the food business category.
  • This acquisition comes after Wipro's announcement of its foray into the food business in India and its aspirations to become a significant player in the snack food, spices, and ready-to-cook market.
  • Nirapara was launched in 1976 and is known for its blended spices.
  • The acquisition will also give Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting an entry into the Rs. 70,000-crore spices market.

Iran to Launch Two Home-grown Communication Satellites

  • Iran will launch two home-grown communication satellites by the end of the Iranian calendar year, i.e., by March 2023.
  • As per reports, in addition to the two communication satellites Nahid 1 and Nahid 2, others are to be launched later. The two satellites are both produced by the Iranian Space Research Centre, with Nahid 1 unveiled in late January 2017.
  • Nahid 2 is an improved version of the series, designed to be put into an orbit 500 km above the Earth. With a two-year lifespan, it has a three-axis control system and a propulsion system for orbital maneuvers.

Mbappe Gets Golden Boot at FIFA World Cup 2022

  • Some of the biggest names in football were recognised with Lionel Messi from Argentina confirmed as the best player at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
  • The Argentinian forward won the Adidas Golden Ball, which is awarded to the best player by the FIFA Technical Study Group.
  • Kylian Mbappe from France and Luka Modric from Croatia came second and third respectively.
  • The Adidas Golden Boot was won by Mbappe, with eight goals and two assists. Messi collected the Silver Boot and Olivier Giroud from France the Bronze.

Minister Jitendra Singh Inaugurates 'Prashasan Gaon ki Ore' Campaign

  • Union Minister for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh inaugurated Good Governance Week 2022 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The Minister also launched a five day "Prashasan Gaon Ki Ore" a nationwide campaign, to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
  • Around 3,120 New Services identified by District Collectors across the country will be added for Online Service Delivery under the campaign. During the preparatory phase of the Good Governance Week 2022, the District Collectors have also identified 81,27,944 applications for Service Delivery to be disposed of, along with 19,48,122 Public Grievances to be redressed in State Grievance Portals.
  • Earlier Secretary, Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances V. Srinivas informed that 373 best Good Governance Practices were identified for discussion in District level workshops on 23rd December.

PM Modi Launches "Grih Pravesh" Programme in Agartala

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the "Grih Pravesh" programme in Agartala for more than two lakh beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban and Rural schemes.
  • Addressing a rally in Agartala Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Tripura is now elevated to a new height of development with various projects.

Taj Mahal Gets Rs 1.9 crore Water Tax, Rs 1.5 lakh Property Tax Notices

  • Agra Municipal Corporation served notices on the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) asking it to pay property tax and water bills for the iconic Taj Mahal.
  • ASI superintendent archaeologist Raj Kumar Patel said that property tax is not applicable on monuments. We are also not liable to pay taxes for water as there is no commercial use of it. Water is used to maintain greenery within the premises. Notices related to water and property tax for Taj Mahal were received for the first time. It could have been sent by mistake.

BSF Deploys Women Guards in Sundarbans on India-Bangladesh Border

  • In a major step symbolizing women's empowerment, Border Security Force (BSF) South Bengal Frontier for the first time deployed Mahila Praharis to protect the international border passing through the marshy and inaccessible Sundarbans area surrounded by vast dense forests and rivers.
  • Securing borders in mighty Sundarbans spread over hundreds of square kilometres along the India-Bangladesh border in the North and South 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal is challenging.
  • The smuggling of cattle, drugs and infiltration from this region has been a continuous major problem. As the construction of land border outposts (BOP) is not feasible in the area, BSF maintains a round-the-clock vigil through floating BOPs.
  • This is the first time in the history of BSF that a platoon of Mahila Praharis has been deployed for border patrolling and operation of a Floating BOP in difficult terrain like the Sunderbans. Their deployment will be especially helpful in preventing smuggling by women smugglers.

International Human Solidarity Day

  • International Human Solidarity Day (IHSD) is observed annually on December 20 across the globe to celebrate the ideal of unity in diversity. IHSD highlights the goal of the United Nations and its member states to create awareness about poverty and the need to reduce poverty in independent nations. As part of the UN's Sustainable Development agenda, IHSD is promoted by the World Solidarity Fund and United Nations Development Programme.
  • As per the United Nations Millennium Declaration published on September 18, 2000, the word 'solidarity' was added to the UN as one of the fundamental values that are to be essential for international relations.
  • On December 20, 2002, the UN General Assembly introduced a World Solidarity Fund to help counter global poverty. This got included in the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) trust fund in February 2003. To commemorate the above day, the UN declared December 20 as International Human Solidarity Day.

West Bengal's 'Duare Sarkar' Scheme Wins Centre's Digital India Award

  • West Bengal's flagship 'Duare Sarkar' or government at doorstep scheme won the Platinum Award at the Digital India Awards 2022.
  • The scheme was awarded by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in the 'Public Digital Platforms — Central Ministries, Departments and States' category.
  • President Droupadi Murmu will give the award to the state on January 7 at a function in Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
  • Since its rollout in December 2020, 'Duare Sarkar' has been held in five phases and over 6.6 crore services were successfully delivered to the citizens through 3.61 lakh outreach camps.

Lok Sabha Passes Anti-maritime Piracy Bill to Promote Trade Security

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Anti-maritime Piracy Bill, 2019 that seeks to provide an effective legal instrument to combat piracy not only in territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) but also on the high seas.
  • The Lok Sabha had taken up the Bill for consideration on December 7. Notably, the Bill will empower Indian authorities to deal with piracy on the high seas beyond the exclusive economic zone which is 200 nautical miles from the country's coastline.
  • Jaishankar had earlier informed the Lok Sabha that most of the recommendations of the standing committee were incorporated in the bill. He said that India does not have a specific law or legal provision in the IPC or the CrPC on piracy.

IIT Madras Gets $1 Million from Google to Develop 'Responsible AI Centre'

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras received a grant of $1 million to set up a new multidisciplinary centre for research and development on responsible artificial intelligence.
  • The Centre for Responsible AI is under the aegis of the Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBC-DSAI). Head of the centre B. Ravindran said that the grant would help to bring in people from various disciplines to find solutions to ethical and technological concerns while using AI.
  • With the government proposing to use AI for its services there are concerns that must be addressed before it can be implemented. The concerns range from ethical and fair use of AI, framing policies and ensuring that the technology is fool-proof.
  • This centre is a first of its kind initiative in India that aims to bring together technologists, sociologists, policy and legal experts from academia, industry and the government to study all aspects of this domain called Responsible AI.

MP Govt. to Cover Fees for Engineering, Medical, Law Education for Students Scoring above 75% in CLASS 12 Board Exams

  • The Madhya Pradesh government stated that it will cover the costs of engineering, medical and law students who received more than 75% marks in their Class 12 board exams.
  • MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan already awards laptops to students scoring above 75% in their board exams. Now, he declared during a speech that the state would cover the costs of attending law school, IIT, engineering school, and medical school.
  • The CM also announced that the government of Madhya Pradesh also agreed to build playgrounds in 110 villages.

China to Open School in Dr. Kotnis' Name in Solapur

  • Paying homage to the legendary Indian physician, Dr. Dwarkanath Shantaram Kotnis, the Consul General of China announced that it will establish a school in his memory. The school will be opened in Dr. Kotnis' home district, Solapur. Dr. Kotnis travelled to China in 1938 and provided medical aid in the battle zone during the second Sino-Japanese War.
  • The announcement was made by Chinese Consul General Kong Xianhua in Mumbai. Kong also said good ties between New Delhi and Beijing are promoted by people.

The Court will have to Look at Resources Beyond the State to Enforce Order if the State cannot Implement it

  • The Meghalaya High Court observed that if the State is unable to implement the order or the subsisting orders of Courts and Tribunals which are binding on it, the High Court will have to look at resources beyond the state to enforce such orders.
  • The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W. Diengdoh heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) raising the issue of illegal functioning of coke plants in the Meghalaya.
  • The High Court recalled that despite the Court's efforts over the last several months to implement the orders passed by the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal to prohibit the illegal mining of coal and the illegal setting up of coke plants, the State government has done extremely little.

SC Directs Centre, IITs to Follow Quota Law in Recruitment of Faculty

  • The Supreme Court directed the Centre to follow the reservation policy for admission in research degree programmes and recruitment of faculty members at IITs as provided under the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers' Cadre) Act, 2019.
  • The top court was hearing a plea filed by S. N. Pandey seeking direction to the Centre and the IITs to follow the reservation policy with regard to admissions in research programmes and recruitment of faculty members, claiming the guidelines were being violated.
  • The matter came up before a bench of Justices M. R. Shah and C. T. Ravikumar and it was informed that the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers' Cadre) Act, 2019 stipulates such reservation and it is being implemented.
