UK, France and UAE Support India's Bid for Permanent Membership at UNSC
The UK, France and UAE extended support for India's permanent membership at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Dame Barbara Woodward, the UK Permanent Representative to the United Nations said that the Security Council must as others have said become more representative of the world today and the UK has long called for its expansion in both the permanent and non-permanent categories.
The UN Security Council is the premier global body for maintaining International peace and security. The Security Council, the United Nations' principal crisis-management body, is empowered to impose binding obligations on the 193 UN member states to maintain peace.
The council's five permanent and ten elected members meet regularly to assess threats to international security, including civil wars, natural disasters, arms proliferation, and terrorism.
The UN Security Council is composed of 15 members, including five permanent member states - China, France, Russian Federation, the United States, and the United Kingdom - and 10 non-permanent member states, which are elected by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Beautiful New Species of Flowering Plant Discovered
Botanists from the Universitas Samudra described a new species of the flowering plant genus Thottea from the lowland mixed forests of northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
Thottea is a relatively large genus of subshrubs and shrubs in the pipevine family Aristolochiaceae.
Usually less than 1 m (3.3 feet) tall, members of the genus are widely distributed in Asia, from India in the west to Sulawesi and Philippines in the east.
Thottea includes over 50 scientifically recognized species, some of which are important in traditional and Ayurvedic medicine.
The newly-identified Thottea species is a perennial subshrub up to 1.5 m (4.9 feet) tall.
Named Thottea beungongtanoeh, it is endemic to the eastern part of Aceh, the northernmost province in Sumatra.
It flowers and fruits in June, and differs from all previously described species in having 33-lobed style, the highest count for the genus.

Bank of Baroda's board approved the divestment of its majority shareholding in the Nainital Bank.
The board of the Mumbai-based bank authorised issuance of an advertisement inviting expressions of interest (EOI) through a preliminary information memorandum (PIM) from interested parties (IPs).
The government backed lender currently holds 98.57% of the total equity share capital of Nainital Bank.

IEX Become India's First Carbon-neutral Power Exchange
India's leading energy trading platform IEX said that it became the country's first carbon-neutral power exchange using market-based tradable instruments to offset its carbon emissions.
To reduce its carbon footprint, the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) voluntarily cancelled the certified emissions reductions (CERs) from clean projects registered under the Clean Development Mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. A CER is a certificate issued by the United Nations to member countries for preventing one tonne of carbon dioxide emissions.
Polish Tennis Star Iga Swiatek Wins Maiden WTA Player of Year Award
Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek was chosen for the player of the year award by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for the first time after her incredible run in 2022 that also saw her get to the summit of women's singles ranking. Swiatek, who was named Newcomer of the Year in 2020, had an exceptional season in 2022, leading the way in terms of finals appearances, awards won and matches won. She was crowned winner at eight tournaments, including six in a row and a 37-match winning streak.
Among the eigh championships were two Grand Slams, at Roland Garros and the US Open, as well as WTA 1000 titles at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open (Doha), the BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells), the Miami Open presented by Ita, Internazionali BNL d'Italia (Rome), and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix (Stuttgart). Swiatek won 67 matches this season in total as per the WTA Tour website.
Adding to the present collection of Geographical Indications (GIs), nine new items, including gamocha of Assam, Tandur red gram of Telangana, Raktsey Karpo apricot of Ladakh, and Alibag white onion of Maharashtra, were given the coveted GI tag. Kerala was awarded five GI tags for its agricultural produce.
With this, the total number of GI tags in India comes to 432. The top five states holding the maximum number of GIs are Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
India-Kazakhstan Joint Training Exercise 'Kazind-22' Begins at Umroi, Meghalaya
The 6th edition of Indo – Kazakhstan joint training exercise "Kazind-22" is being conducted at Umroi (Meghalaya) from 15 to 28 December 2022. The scope of this exercise involves a Command Post Exercise (CPX) at the Battalion level and Company level Field Training Exercise (FTX) on sub-conventional operations. During the exercise, participants will engage in variety of missions ranging from joint planning, joint tactical drills, basics of special arms skills, HADR and raiding a hostile target.
Joint annual training exercise with the Kazakhstan Army was instituted in 2016 as Exercise Prabal Dostyk, which was later upgraded to a company level exercise and renamed as Ex Kazind in 2018.

It was the "Greatest Ever Victory" and India rose as a regional power to reckon with.
The Indian Railways have won nine National Energy Conservation Awards for the year 2022, with the South Central Railways bagging the first and second prize in railway stations category.
These awards were given for the best energy management practices and presented by President Droupadi Murmu at a function held by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the aegis of Ministry of Power.
The first prize was awarded for Kacheguda Station (Telangana) and the second to Guntakal Station (Andhra Pradesh) for energy conservation measures in railway stations category.
Certificate of merit was awarded to the Kanpur Central Railway Station (NCR), Rajahmudry Railway Station (SCR) and Tenali Railway station (SCR) under this category.
Under the buildings category, Ajmer Workshop of North Western Railway was awarded the first prize. Certificate of merit was awarded to railway hospital Guntakal (SCR), Electric Traction Training Centre, Vijayawada (SCR) and Divisional Railway Hospital, Pratapnagar (WR).
Parliament Passes Bill to Rename New Delhi International Arbitration Centre
Parliament passed a bill to rename the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre as the India International Arbitration Centre.
The Rajya Sabha passed the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which was piloted by Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju.
The Lok Sabha had already passed the bill in August 2022, which expands this to include the conduct of other forms of alternative dispute resolution besides arbitration.
IIT Ropar, Army Training Command sign MoU to set up Centre of Excellence
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar and the Army Training Command (ARTRAC) of the Indian Army signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up a centre of excellence for studies and applied research in defence and security at the premier institute.
The MoU was signed by Rajeev Ahuja, director, IIT Ropar and Lt Gen SS Mahal, General Officer Commanding –in-Chief of the ARTRAC.
IIT Ropar will also curate training programmes as exchange of information on educational programmes for security practitioners of the armed forces, Central Armed Police Forces, intelligence agencies and state police forces run by it as part of its on-campus and off-campus programmes on research and innovation.

No Vacation Bench of Supreme Court to Sit during Winter Break
Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud declared that no Vacation Bench will conduct hearings during the upcoming winter break of the Supreme Court.
The CJI said that Vacation Benches were only formed when the Court went for longer breaks such as during summers in the months of May and June. However, the practice would not be followed during the winter break in December.
The Apex Court will go for Winter break from December 19 to January 2.
