Pakistani Passport Ranks 4th Lowest in World

  • Pakistan was ranked 94th, sharing the slot with Somalia, in terms of passport strength while the UAE topped the list of the world's most powerful ones.
  • According to the list issued by Arton Capital, a Pakistani passport mandates travel to only 44 countries without a visa.
  • Below Pakistan were Iraq (ranked 95th), Syria (96th) and Afghanistan (97th).
  • In comparison, the passports of Yemen (93rd), Bangladesh (92nd), North Korea, Libya and Palestine (91st) and Iran (90th) were declared more powerful than that of Pakistan.
  • However, the passport of the UAE has been declared the most powerful across the world.
  • UAE nationals can travel to 180 countries without a visa.
  • Citizens of countries, including the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and others do not require a visa to visit 173 countries.
  • Pakistan was the lowest ranked country among South Asian countries.

ASK Capital Gets Central Bank of Ireland Nod to Launch India-based Fund

  • ASK Capital received approval from the Central Bank of Ireland to launch an India-based fund — ASK Indian Entrepreneur Fund — through the UCITS route. ASK is the fourth asset or wealth management firm in India to receive approval for an UCITS (Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities) fund. Kotak AMC, Whiteoak Capital and UTI AMC already have such funds.
  • UCITS is a regulatory framework of the European Commission for management and sale of mutual funds.

Centre Allows 100% WFH for IT Units in SEZs till December 31, 2023

  • The commerce department allowed information technology (IT) firms operating in special economic zones (SEZs) to permit 100 per cent work from home (WFH) or any place outside such zones till December 31, 2023.
  • According to the amended rule 43A under the SEZ law, employees of IT and information technology enabled services, employees who are travelling as well as those who are working offsite will be allowed to work from home (WFH) or any place outside SEZs.
  • In July, the Centre had allowed 50 per cent of the employees in SEZs, including contractual workers, to work from home. Till now, WFH was permitted for a maximum per­iod of one year in an SEZ unit.
  • The new rule states that a unit will have to only maintain the lists of employees who are allowed to follow WFH or from any place outside SEZs. The list will have to be submitted to the development commissioner whenever required.

Himachal polls: CM Thakur Tenders Resignation to Governor after Conceding Defeat

  • Conceding defeat in Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur tendered his resignation to the governor.
  • Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has accepted his resignation.
  • Congress crossed the majority mark and won 40 seats in the 68-member Himachal Pradesh Assembly. The Chief Minister said that he respects the mandate.
  • The BJP won 25 seats in the election. Three Independents have also emerged victorious.

AAP to Decide MCD Mayor after LG Appoints Date to Convene Municipal House

  • The AAP will decide on the probables for the mayor's post after the Delhi LG gives a date for the house to be convened.
  • The MCD will be approaching Delhi LG V.K. Saxena to seek a date on which the Municipal House can be convened so that the councillors can take oath, and a mayor can be selected.
  • The AAP got a shot in the arm after two Congress councillors joined it taking the total number of council to 136. There is no anti-defection law in the MCD.
  • The AAP won 134 wards, while the BJP won 104 wards in the recently concluded MCD elections, ending BJP's 15-year rule over the civic body.

Japan to Jointly Develop 'Next-genenration' Fighter Jet with UK, Italy

  • Japan announced that it will jointly develop its next-generation fighter jet with the UK and Italy as Tokyo looks to expand defence cooperation beyond its traditional ally, the United States.
  • The Mitsubishi F-X fighter jet will replace the aging fleet of F-2 that Japan previously developed with the United States.
  • Japan's F-X and Britain's Tempest, a successor to the Eurofighter Typhoon, will be combined into the next-generation combat aircraft for deployment in 2035.
  • The deal will give Japan greater support in countering China's growing assertiveness and allow Britain a bigger presence in the Indo-Pacific region.

  • UNICEF Day is observed on December 11 every year, to spread awareness on saving children's lives, defending their rights and helping them fulfil their potential from childhood to adolescence. The United Nations General Assembly announced this day on December 11 in year 1946. This was done to ensure the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.
  • The UN's International Children's Emergency Fund was established in the aftermath of World War II. Their mandate was clear, which was to help people whose lives and futures were at risk, no matter what role they played during the war.

Indian-American Krishna Vavilala Receives US Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award

  • US President Joe Biden recognised Indian-American and a long-time Houstonian, Krishna Vavilala, with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement (PLA) Award, the nation's highest honour for his contributions to his community and the country at large. The Presidential Lifetime Achievement (PLA) Awards, led by AmeriCorps, is an annual event held to honour citizens, who exhibit outstanding character, worth ethic, and dedication to their communities.
  • Krishna Vavilala is Originally from Andhra Pradesh. Vavilala is a retired Electrical Engineer, and currently, the founder and Chairman of the Foundation for India Studies (FIS), a 16-year-old non-profit organisation, whose signature project "the Indo-American Oral History Project" won the 2019 Mary Fay Barnes Award for Excellence.
  • Vavilala has also served as a President of the American Society of Indian Engineers, Telugu Cultural Association, Houston and Telugu Literary and Cultural Association.
  • He has received several awards and accolades from various organisations including the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston, the Indo-American Press Club and the Lifetime Achievement Award, from the India Culture Centre.

IIT Delhi Organises 4th Edition of Industry Day

  • IIT Delhi's flagship industry-academia partnership event, Industry Day 2022, was held on December 10, 2022.

Supreme Court Adjourns SLP against Bombay High Court Order Mandating Shops to Have Signboards in Marathi Language

  • The Supreme Court adjourned a Special Leave Petition, which challenged the Bombay High Court order that upheld the validity of Rule 35 of the Maharashtra Shops and Establishment Act, mandating signboards to be in Marathi language in Devanagari script on top and having the same font size as any other language.
  • The Maharashtra government, by way of an amendment, had recently incorporated Rule 35 into the main Act as Section 36-A, making it applicable to shops and establishments with even less than 10 workers.
  • A bunch of petitions challenging the constitutionality of this provision and also on whether the State could impose its official language in matters of trade and business came up for hearing before the Division Bench of Justice K.M. Joseph and Justice B.V. Nagarathna.
