Israel's Netanyahu Needs One more Party for Coalition, May Seek more Time

  • Israeli Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu was still one partner short of a coalition to secure a parliamentary majority after an ultra-Orthodox Jewish party signed up, with the deadline for forming a government looming.
  • The deal with United Torah Judaism (UTJ) promised Netanyahu control of 53 of the Knesset's 120 seats with his conservative Likud party. That left Shas, an ultra-Orthodox party with 11 seats, as Likud's last likely ally.

Three Indian Billionaires on Forbes Asia Heroes of Philanthropy List

  • Gautam Adani emerged as one of the three Indian billionaires who featured in Forbes' philanthropy list 2022.
  • Shiv Nadar, and Ashok Soota, as well as Malaysian-Indian businessman Brahmal Vasudevan and his lawyer wife Shanthi Kandiah, joined Adani in the 16th edition of Forbes Asia's Heroes of Philanthropy list released in December.
  • According to Forbes, the unranked list "highlights leading altruists in the Asia-Pacific region who demonstrated a strong personal commitment to philanthropic causes."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy TIME's Person of the Year

  • Time magazine named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy "Person of the Year 2022", saying that he inspired Ukrainians and won global accolades for his courage in resisting Russia's devastating invasion.
  • Refusing to leave Ukraine's capital of Kyiv at the outbreak of the war as Russian bombs rained down, the former comedian rallied his compatriots in broadcasts from the capital and travelled across his war-torn nation, the publication noted in bestowing its annual title.

Cryptic New Species of Rhinoceros Snake Identified in China

  • Scientists described a new species of the snake genus Gonyosoma from Hainan Island, China.
  • Gonyosoma is a genus of snakes in the family Colubridae (commonly known as colubrids).
  • The genus is comprised of almost 10 scientifically recognized species endemic to South Asia.
  • The newly-identified species, named Gonyosoma hainanense, inhabits subtropical rainforests of Hainan Island in the Chinese province of Hainan.
  • It is the second largest island in China, covering an area of more than 30,000 km2, and harbors many endemic species.

Arun Kumar Singh Appointed Chairman of ONGC for Tenure of 3 Years

  • In the first instance of a retired official being brought back to head a public sector utility in the oil and gas sector, ex-Chairman of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Arun Kumar Singh, was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) for three years. Singh had retired from BPCL in October 2022.
  • The country's largest oil and gas producer has been without a regular CMD since April 2021, with the senior most director on the board having been entrusted with the additional charge. The company has had a record three interim heads.

Spice Money Partners with Axis Bank for Financial Inclusion in Rural India

  • Fintech player Spice Money partnered with Axis Bank to facilitate opening of instant, zero balance savings or current accounts for rural citizens through its Adhikari network.
  • Through this association, Spice Money aims to bridge the rural-urban divide and bring financial inclusivity by providing access to banking products to the last mile at their doorstep, thereby financially empowering thousands of rural citizens living in the hinterlands of India.
  • Axis Bank is the third largest private sector bank in India. The bank offers the entire spectrum of services to customer segments covering large and mid-corporates, SME, agriculture and retail businesses.

NHPC Appoints Mohammand Afzal as Govt. Nominee Director on its Board

  • State-owned hydro power giant NHPC's board appointed Mohammad Afzal as government nominee director.
  • The company also informed that Afzal is not related to any of the directors of the company and not debarred from holding the office of director by virtue of any order of the Securities and Exchange Board of India or any other such authority.
  • Afzal is presently working as Joint Secretary (Transmission) in the Ministry of Power.

Sukant Kadam Strikes Gold at Peru Para Badminton International

  • World No. 3 Sukant Kadam smashed his way to a gold medal at the Peru Para-Badminton International, defeating ace shuttler defeated Singapore's Chee Hiong Ang.
  • India won 14 medals in total (6 gold, 1 silver and 7 bronze).
  • Sukant defeated Chee Hiong Ang in straight sets with a score line of 21-14 and 21-15. The match lasted 32 minutes.
  • In the women's category, Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan and Mandeep Kaur clinched the titles in the SH6 and SL3 singles sections.
  • Indian men's doubles pair Nehal and Breno Johann (SL3-SL4) and the women's doubles duo of Parul Parmar and Vaishali Nilesh Patel (SL3-SU5) claimed gold medals in their respective categories.

Rohit Sharma Becomes First Indian to Hit 500 Sixes in International Cricket

  • Captain Rohit Sharma became the first Indian, and just the second batter world-wide, in international cricket to hit 500 sixes, during the second ODI against Bangladesh.
  • Rohit's tally of 500 international sixes is bettered by only West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who has 533 sixes. No other Indian batter has more than 400 sixes. M.S. Dhoni with 359 sixes is the closest to Rohit among Indian players.
  • The likes of Shahid Afridi (476), Brendon McCullum (398), Martin Guptill (383) are the third, fourth and fifth place respectively in the list of most number of six hitters in international cricket.

MCD Poll Result 2022: AAP Marks Maiden Win Ending 15-year BJP Rule

  • The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) recorded its maiden victory in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, winning 134 seats and ending the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 15-year term at the helm of the civic body. However, with 104 seats in hand, the BJP suggested that it would still have a say in choosing the capital's next mayor.
  • The high-stake civic poll was the city's first since three erstwhile municipal corporations were merged to constitute a unified MCD in May. The total number of municipal wards was also reduced from 272 to 250, as part of a delimitation exercise.

Govt. Appoints N. Chandrasekaran as Chair of B20 India

  • The government appointed Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran as the Chair of B20 India, (industry body CII).
  • He will lead the business agenda during India's G-20 presidency.
  • The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) was appointed as the B20 India Secretariat by the Indian government to lead the B20 India process.
  • The Business 20 (B20) is the official G-20 dialogue forum with the global business community.
  • Established in 2010, B20 is among the most prominent engagement groups in G-20, with companies and business organisations as participants.
  • The B20 leads the process of galvanising global business leaders for their views on issues of global economic and trade governance and speaks in a single voice for the entire G-20 business community.

Government Plans 10 more Nuclear Power Plants

  • The government plans to set up 10 more nuclear power plants based on indigenous technology, Minister of State for Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh said in the Lok Sabha. These 10 plants will be in addition to the 11 reactors that are under construction.
  • The government has accorded an administrative approval and financial sanction for the construction of 10 indigenous 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors. It has also accorded in-principle approval for five new sites for these nuclear plants.

Four Diplomats, US Lawmaker Honoured with 2022 'Diwali- Power of One' Award at UN

  • Four veteran diplomats and a US lawmaker were honoured with this year's (2022) annual 'Diwali- Power of One' Award for their efforts in working towards a peaceful and secure world. The award, which is also known as the 'Oscars of Diplomacy', is presented to former top diplomats of the United Nations or a member state for their effort to help form a more perfect, peaceful and secure world for all."
  • Former Permanent Representative of Georgia to the UN and current Ambassador to Canada Kaha Imnadze, and former Permanent Representative of Grenada to the United Nations Keisha McGuire were among those who were honoured.
  • The other three who were awarded were former Interim Defence Minister and Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the UN and current Ambassador to the US Georgi Velikov Panayotov, former Permanent Representative of Benin to the UN and now Ambassador to the US Jean-Claude do Rego and former Chairman, Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives Eliot Lance Engel.

Kerala Govt. Tables Bill to Remove Governor as Chancellor amid Controversies

  • The Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government tabled a Bill seeking removal of Governor as Chancellor amid controversies over appointments in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
  • Apparently, the ongoing nine-day special session has been convened after an Ordinance on the same continues to be with Governor Arif Mohammed Khan with no action taken.
  • State Law Minister P. Rajeev piloted the Bill which was vehemently opposed by the Congress-led Opposition, especially Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan who said that the Bill does not mention the qualifications required for the Chancellor.

IIM-Raipur to Launch Executive Certificate Programme for Chief Supply Chain, Operations Officer

  • The Indian Institute of Management, Raipur collaborated with Imarticus Learning to launch its Executive Certificate Programme for chief supply chain and operations officers. The course will be 10 months long and candidates require a graduate degree to apply for the course.
  • The programme aims to help aspiring professionals in the field of supply chain and operations to up skill and gain better employment and promotion opportunities. And those who are already established in the field, it will help them acquire leadership skills in the area of strategy, operations and technology.
  • There would be over 150 hours of live sessions from experts of IIM Raipur and a three-day immersive session on campus. The graduates from this programme will also receive a certificate from the institute.

UGC Forms Panel to Work on Textbooks in Indian Languages

  • University Grants Commission (UGC) chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar met representatives of international publishers to discuss a roadmap for translating their books as part of plans to introduce undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Indian languages across disciplines.
  • The UGC also constituted an apex committee to prepare the roadmap to introduce undergraduate and postgraduate courses in regional languages in disciplines including commerce, humanities, and science across the country.
  • The UGC has sought the translation of textbooks for undergraduate programmes in languages such as Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu. "The UGC will also provide hand-holding to the publishers regarding the identification of textbooks, translation tools, and experts for editing to these publishers.

  • While Supreme Court judges retire on attaining the age of 65 years, high court judges retire at 62.
