South Korea's Mina Sue Choi Crowned Miss Earth 2022

  • South Korea's Mina Sue Choi was crowned Miss Earth 2022 during the pageant's coronation at Cove Manila, Okada Hotel, Parañaque City. There were 86 Eco-warriors, and only three queens were awarded the pageant's three elements titles.
  • Miss Fire 2022 was Andrea Aguilera of Columbia, Miss Water 2022 was Nadeen Ayoub of Palestine, and Miss Air 2022 was Sheridan Mortlock of Australia. During the pre-pageant activities, Choi bagged a few medals too. She won resort wear, long gown, beach wear, and swimsuit competition.
  • The new queen inherited the title from Destiny Wagner, who was the first woman from Belize to capture a major international crown.
  • Destiny Wagner won in a virtual competition conducted in 2021.

Senior Journalist Ravish Kumar Resigns from NDTV amid Adani Takeover

  • Ramon Magsaysay award-winning journalist Ravish Kumar resigned from NDTV, just a day after the channel's founders and promoters Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy resigned as directors from the board of the news broadcaster's promoter entity RRPR Holding Private Limited.
  • Ravish Kumar was an integral part of NDTV for more than two decades.
  • Kumar's resignation came amid an open offer by the Adani Group to acquire NDTV that is set to close on December 5.
  • Sudipta Bhattacharya, the chief technology officer of Adani Group; Sanjay Pugalia, senior journalist and CEO of Adani's AMG Media Network; and journalist Senthil Sinniah Chengalvarayan are taking over as directors of the board.

Infrastructure Finance Co IDFC AMC Gets SEBI Nod for Change in Ownership

  • Markets regulator SEBI approved the acquisition of IDFC Asset Management Company Limited (IDFC AMC) by a consortium comprising Bandhan Financial Holdings Limited, GIC and ChrysCapital.
  • Last month, the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) approved the deal and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) had given its clearance in August.
  • In April, the board of directors of IDFC Limited and IDFC Financial Holding Company Limited had approved the sale of IDFC AMC and IDFC AMC Trustee Company Limited to the consortium.

TCS Becomes Top Women Employer in India with 35% Female Staff

  • Axis Bank's Burgundy Private and Hurun India released the second edition of the top 10 women employers in the country. The 2022 Burgundy Private Hurun India list had some of the biggest employers of women in the country. The list was led by Tata Consultancy Services which employs about 2.1 lakh or 35 per cent of women employees of the total workforce.
  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was followed by Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies and Reliance Industries that employ 40 per cent, 36 per cent, 28 per cent and 18 per cent of women employees, respectively.

England Make History in Pakistan by Scoring 506-4 on Day One

  • England posted a world record as they smashed a mammoth 506/4 on Day 1 of the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, led by Crawley (122 off 111), Duckett (107 off 110), Pope (108 off 104) and Brook (101no off 81).
  • Crawley and Duckett, stitched together 174 runs in the first session, the most by any team. The previous record was held by India, who posted 158 against Afghanistan back in 2018. The duo went on to add 233 runs for the first wicket, becoming the quickest opening stand to cross 200 runs (off 181 deliveries).
  • First time in England's Test history, both openers scored 50 off 50 balls or less. While Crawley crossed the mark of 38 deliveries, Ben Duckett, who also scored a century on the day, completed his half century off exactly fifty deliveries.
  • England's total of 506 was the first time a team crossed the 500 run mark on day one of a Test match, eclipsing the previous highest first day total which was held by Australia, who posted 494/6 on day one of the Sydney Test against South Africa in December 1910.

Gujarat Assembly Polls Phase-1 End: 59.2% Voter Turnout Recorded Till 5 pm

  • An average 59.24 per cent voter turn-out was recorded as of 5 pm across 89 Assembly seats in the first phase of Gujarat elections. While voting began at 8 in the morning and ended at 5 pm, the final turn-out would be higher as the process continued at the polling stations where voters had arrived before 5 pm and were standing in queues.
  • The fate of 788 candidates will be decided in the first phase. Barring a few incidents, polling was largely peaceful across all 89 seats in south Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch regions which went to polls in the first phase.

Exercise Agni Warrior Concludes in Maharashtra

  • The 12th edition of a bilateral exercise between the armies of India and Singapore concluded in Maharashtra, and achieved its aim of improving interoperability between the two sides. The bilateral exercise involved showcasing joint firepower planning, execution and use of new generation equipment by the artillery arm of both the armies.
  • It also included participation by both sides in a computer war game as part of the joint planning process. Both sides utilised niche technology and artillery observation simulators as part of the joint training phase.
  • The closing event was witnessed by Wong Wie Kuen, High Commissioner of Singapore to India, Lt Gen S Harimohan Iyer, Commandant, School of Artillery, along with other dignitaries from Singapore and serving officers from both the armies.

Veteran Odia Film Actress Jharana Das Passes Away

  • Veteran Odia film actress Jharana Das died at her house. She was 77.
  • Das, a winner of the state government's prestigious 'Jaydev Puraskar' for her lifetime contribution to Odia film industry, was suffering from old age-related aliment.
  • Born in 1945, Das started her acting career in the '60s and had won several accolades for her brilliant performance in landmark films like 'Shree Jagannath', 'Nari', 'Adinamegha', 'Hisabnikas', 'Pujafula', 'Amadabata', 'Abhinetri', 'Malajanha' and 'Heera Nella'.
  • Das had also worked as a child artiste and announcer with the All India Radio, Cuttack. She had also worked as an assistant station director of Doordarshan in Cuttack. Her direction in the biographical documentary on former Odisha Chief Minister Harekrushna Mahtab was lauded by many.

National Pollution Control Day

  • National Pollution Control Day 2021 is observed annually on December 2 to remember the people who lost lives during 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy. It is also the day to raise awareness about the hazards of air pollution. Sadly nine among ten people across the world do not have access to safe air and consequently face risk of respiratory disorders, lung cancer, brain or kidney damage and heart disease in long run.

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

  • International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is observed on December 2 to highlight the importance of eradicating contemporary forms of slavery including trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, child labour, forced marriage, etc.
  • The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery was initiated by the United Nations General Assembly on December 2. The Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others was passed by the Assembly on December 2, 1949. Likewise, by resolution 57/195 of December 18, 2002, the Assembly notified 2004 the International Year to memorialise the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition.
  • The theme of the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery 2022 was 'Stories of Courage: Resistance to Slavery and Unity against Racism.'

World Computer Literacy Day

  • World Computer Literacy Day is marked on December 2 every year. This day is celebrated to drive digital literacy, specifically among women and children. Although the world is progressing toward an increasingly digital future, certain sections of society still have either limited or no digital access. As much as Computer Literacy Day is about celebrating computers, it is also about advocating for computer literacy in all sections of society.
  • The day was originally founded by the Indian computer company NIIT to mark its 20th anniversary in 2001. World Computer Literacy Day was first observed and held in the year 2001 on December 2.

Uttarakhand House Passes Stricter Bill against Conversion

  • The Uttarakhand Assembly passed a more stringent anti-conversion Bill that makes unlawful religious conversion in the state a cognizable and non-bailable offence, punishable with imprisonment for a jail-term of at least three years and a maximum 10 years.
  • On the second day of the supplementary Budget session, the House also passed Uttarakhand Public Services (Horizontal Reservation for Women) Bill, 2022, providing 30-per cent horizontal reservation to women in state-owned services.
  • Horizontal reservation can be explained as a quota within a quota. While a vertical reservation applies separately for each group specified under law, horizontal quota is applied separately to each vertical category, and not across the board. So once this law is implemented, 30% of the selected candidates in public service will have to necessarily be women in each vertical quota category, such as categories for SC/ST/OBCs, etc.

BIS Signs MoU with top six Engineering Institutes of India

  • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the top six engineering institutes of India for introducing Indian standards as an integral part of the curriculum. This initiative is towards institutionalizing engagement of BIS with eminent institutes to secure active participation of academia.
  • The MoU was signed with the Indian Institute of Technology BHU, Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur, Indian Institute of Technology Indore, Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and National Institute of Technology Trichy.
  • The establishment will promote excellence and leadership in teaching and research & development in the field of science and various disciplines in the respective institutes.

Nagaland: 23rd Hornbill Festival 2022 Kicks Start

  • The 23rd Hornbill Festival 2022 kicked started this evening. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio officially opened the Hornbill Festival by beating the Gong.
  • Now it has been more than 20 years that the Hornbill Festival of Nagaland has welcomed visitors from around the world. In 10 days festival, a visitor gets the opportunity to view all the Naga tribes, their culture and distinctiveness in one place.
  • Hornbill Festival of Nagaland is also popularly known as the 'Festival of Festivals' and showcases Nagaland's rich culture. It is organized by the Government of Nagaland, mainly to encourage inter-tribal interaction and to promote the cultural heritage of Nagaland.
  • The daily cultural events include activities such as music festivals, photo fest, fashion shows, adventure sports, night carnivals, etc.
  • The 23rd Hornbill Festival 2022 will conclude on December 10.

Book on Chipko Movement Bags Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Prize

  • A book on the popular forest conservation campaign Chipko Movement, written by historian-activist Shekhar Pathak, was named the winner of the Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize 2022.
  • Translated from Hindi by Manisha Chaudhry, "The Chipko Movement: A People's History" was selected from a diverse shortlist of five books covering a wide expanse of modern Indian history and encompassing distinct topics and perspectives.
  • The other shortlisted books were "Accidental Feminism: Gender Parity and Selective Mobility Among India's Professional Elite" by Swethaa S. Ballakrishnen; "Whole Numbers and Half Truths: What Data Can and Cannot Tell Us About Modern India" by Rukmini. S; "Midnight's Borders: A People's History of Modern India" by Suchitra Vijayan; and "Born a Muslim: Some Truths about Islam in India" by Ghazala Wahab.
  • The Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize recognises and celebrates excellence in non-fiction writings on modern or contemporary India by writers from all nationalities. It carries a cash award of Rs. 15 lakh, a trophy and a citation.

Supreme Court Refuses to Stay MCD Polls in Delhi

  • The Supreme Court refused to stay the elections of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), scheduled to be held in the national capital on December 4, observing that once an election notification was published, it could not be stayed by the Court.
  • The Bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Abhay S. Oka dismissed a petition challenging the Delhi High Court order, which had also refused to stay the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections.
  • As per the Apex Court, since the elections were scheduled to be held in three days, the passage of time had made the petition infructuous.
  • Earlier on November 9, 2022, the High Court of Delhi had refused to stay the MCD elections. The Division Bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramanium Prasad had given the same reason as the Apex Court for dismissing a bunch of petitions challenging the delimitation of certain wards and their reservation.
