RBI, UAE Central Bank Discuss Mechanism to Trade in Local Currencies
The central banks of India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are discussing the creation of a mechanism to engage in bilateral trade in local currencies, in order to reduce transaction costs for exporters and importers, India's ambassador to UAE, Sunjay Sudhir, said.
India has prepared a concept paper (regarding rupee-dirham trade) and has shared it with the UAE. UAE's central bank has already designated a nodal person for this. The discussion is now going on between the central banks.
Typically exporters and importers lose money on currency exchange. For instance, during trade, the rupee is first converted into dollars, which is then re-converted into dirhams. In order to avoid this, central banks are discussing the percentage of trade that can be covered through direct rupee-dirham transactions.
UAE is India's third-largest trade partner and second-largest export market. Earlier this year, India and UAE signed a free trade agreement (FTA) that became operational in May.

McFall, who lost his right leg due to a motorcycle accident at the age of 19, won a bronze medal in the 100 metres at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.
The announcement came as ESA appointed a new set of astronauts for the first time since 2009 after whittling down 22,500 valid applications. ESA posted openings last year for people fully capable of passing its usual stringent psychological, cognitive and other tests who are only prevented from becoming astronauts due to the constraints of existing hardware in light of their disability. It received 257 applications for the role of astronaut with a disability. McFall will work with ESA engineers to understand what changes in hardware are needed to open professional spaceflight to a wider group of qualified candidates.

India Forms Panel to Revamp Only Govt. Job Guarantee Scheme
India's Union rural development ministry formed a panel to revamp its only job guarantee scheme in the hope of directing more work to the country's poorer regions.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, or MNREGA, was in high demand in the India's rural areas as they emerged from the pandemic amid soaring inflation and limited non-farm job opportunities.
Residents of relatively affluent states, however, may have fared better in securing work under the key anti-poverty job program, triggering calls for changes to the scheme.
The spending of states such as Bihar and Odisha, for instance, under the jobs scheme lags those of states such as Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan, which have a higher per-capita income, government data shows.
The MNREGA jobs programme, introduced more than 15 years ago, allows citizens to enrol for works such as building roads, digging wells or creating other rural infrastructure, and receive a minimum wage for 100 days each year.
