ICAI hosted the 21st World Congress of Accountants 2022 from November 18-21, 2022 at Jio World Centre, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
The 4-day event was inaugurated by Om Birla (Speaker of Lok Sabha) and attended by the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal.
Its theme for the year 2022 was, "Building Trust Enabling Sustainability". WOCA has been organised in every four years since 2002. WCOA has been held under the auspices of the International Federation of Accountants.
Indian Embassy Organised Indian Film Festival in Korea
The 10th Indian Film Festival in Busan was held from Nov 18-20, 2022 in South Korea. It was organised by the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Embassy of India Seoul and supported by the Directorate of Film Festival, Ministry of I&B.
This Film Festival is a part of the ongoing annual flagship cultural programme of Embassy of India (Seoul) 'SARANG – The Festival of India in Republic of Korea'. The first was screened on this platform was Padmavat (Hindi movie).
Tamil Nadu Announced its First Biodiversity Heritage Site
Tamil Nadu govt has declared the Arittapatti and and Meenakshipuram villages near Melur in Madurai district as a biodiversity heritage site under Section 37 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
The site is situated in an area of 193.21 hectare. It is the first Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS) to be notified in the state.
The Arittapatti village is surrounded by a chain of seven barren granite hillocks. The site also features various megalithic structures.
India's Jindal Wins Botswana Coal-Fired Power Plant Project
India's steel, mining, and infrastructure company, Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) has won the tender to build a 300-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Botswana.
It is the only fossil fuel-based power plant the Southern African country plans to procure in the next 20 years. Under the project, Jindal will finance the plant and recouping its investments from selling electricity to the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC).
Subrat Kumar Appointed as Executive Director of Bank of India
Subrat Kumar has been appointed executive director of the Bank of India with effect for three years.
He has an experience of 27 years in commercial banks and asset management companies.
Previously he held the roles of Regional Head, Patna, Head of Treasury Management, Audit & Inspection, Credit Monitoring, and Corporate Credit.
He also served as the bank's Chief Risk Officer (eVB) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
Airtel Payment Bank Launches Face Authentication-Based Savings Account
Airtel Payments Bank has launched face authentication-based savings bank account opening for customers.
Its aim is to ease the account opening process and provide better customers experience. It is the first payments bank in the country to offer this facility.
It will also help business correspondents of the bank to open an account just by undertaking face authentication e-KYC. The authentication is processed by using a newly developed mobile application by UIDAI.
World Team Chess Championship: India Beat USA, Qualify for Quarterfinals
Riding on wins from Vidit Gujrathi and S. L. Narayanan, India defeated USA 3-1 in a fifth round Pool B match to qualify for the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Team chess championship at Jerusalem in November.
It was India's second win in the tournament and they will now take on France in the quarterfinals.
Gujrathi and Narayanan scored wins against Hans Niemann and Varuzhan Akobian respectively to set up the victory. Gujrathi downed the highly-rated Niemann in 37 moves, while Narayanan did so against Akobian in 38.
The 25th National Conference on e-governance will be held in Katra, Jammu & Kashmir from 26th of November.
The theme of the two-day Conference is Bringing Citizens, Industry and Government closer. The Conference will be inaugurated by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Minister of State of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions Dr. Jitendra Singh.
C. V. Ananda Bose Takes Oath as West Bengal Governor
Governor designate of West Bengal C. V. Ananda Bose on Tuesday arrived in Kolkata.
The new West Bengal governor will be administered the oath on Wednesday by the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other dignitaries, including assembly Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay and Leader of Opposition Suvendhu Adhikary, will be present at the programme.
IIT-Guwahati Director, T. G. Sitharam Appointed as New Chairman of AICTE
IIT Guwahati Director, T. G. Sitharam has been appointed chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for three years or till he attain the age of 65, whichever is earlier.
He will replace UGC chairman, Jagadesh Kumar, who was holding the interim charge of the AICTE chairman after the retirement of Anil Sahasrabuddhe on September 1, 2021.
Sitharam's tenure as an IIT director will expire in July 2024. AICTE HQ is in New Delhi.
Founder and chairman of Rasna group, Areez Khambatta has been passed away at the age of 85 due to cardiac arrest in Ahmedabad. Khambatta had established the popular orange-flavoured beverage brand in 1976.
He was awarded the President of India's Home Guard and Civil Defence Medal, as well as the Paschimi Star, Samarseva, and Sangram Medals. He was honoured with the National Citizen's Award for his outstanding contribution in the field of commerce.
Franca Ma-ih Sulem Yong Gets UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Prize for 2022
The 2022 Edition of UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize has been given to Franca Ma-ih Sulem Yong from Cameroon.
She is a President of the NGOs #Afrogiveness and Positive Youths Africa for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence.
The Prize is named after its benefactor, former Indian artist, writer and diplomat Madanjeet Singh (1924-2013) who was also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
This award is awarded every two years to individuals. She received a prize money of US$ 100,000.
Champions of the Earth 2022: India's Purnima Devi Barman Honoured with UN's Highest Environmental Award
Assam's leading conservationist Purnima Devi Barman was awarded the United Nation's highest environmental honor, 'Champions of the Earth', for 2022.
As per the United Nations Environmental Program, Barman who is a wildlife biologist won the award along with four others from different countries for their transformative action to prevent, halt and reverse ecosystem degradation.
The 'Champions of Earth' Award is given in various categories and India's Purnima Devi Barman received it in the Entrepreneurial Vision Category, for leading the 'Hargila Army'.
