For First Time One of North Korea's 23 Ballistic Missiles Lands off South's Coast

  • North Korea fired at least 23 missiles into the sea in a single day, including one that landed less than 60 km (40 miles) off South Korea's coast, which the South's President Yoon Suk-yeol described as "territorial encroachment".
  • It was the first time a ballistic missile had landed near the South's waters since the peninsula was divided in 1945, and the most missiles fired by the North in a single day. South Korea issued rare air raid warnings and launched its own missiles in response.
  • President Yoon Suk-yeol noted North Korea's provocation today was an effective act of territorial encroachment by a missile intruding the Northern Limit Line (NLL), a disputed inter-Korean maritime border, for the first time since (the two Koreas') division.

Ghana Assumes Presidency of UN Security Council

  • West African country, Ghana assumed the rotating monthly Presidency of the United Nations Security Council. During the month of November 2022, Ghana shall preside over the meetings of the Council (adoptions, debates and consultations) and, under its authority, shall represent the Security Council in its capacity as an organ of the United Nations.
  • In its capacity as President of the UN Security Council, Ghana is focusing on enhancing Global Peace and Security for Sustainable and Inclusive Development, particularly on the continent of Africa.
  • This will be by fully addressing underlying causes and drivers of conflict linked to the growing youth bulge, poverty, climate change and the absence of resilient institutions.
  • Ghana rejoined the UN Security Council on January 1, 2022. It is the third time Ghana is holding a non­permanent seat on the Council.
  • Ghana was first given the opportunity to serve on the council from 1962 to 1963, and was back for the period of January 2006 – December 2007.

No Glaciers on Kilimanjaro by 2050

  • According to a UN report, glaciers across the globe - including the last ones in Africa - will be unavoidably lost by 2050 due to climate change.
  • A third of glaciers located in UN World Heritage sites will melt within three decades, a UNESCO report found.
  • Mount Kilimanjaro's last glaciers will vanish as will glaciers in the Alps and Yosemite National Park in the US.
  • They will melt regardless of the world's actions to combat climate change, the experts say.
  • The report, which marked projections based on satellite data, came as world leaders prepare to meet in Egypt for next week's COP27 climate change conference.
  • About 18,600 glaciers have been identified across 50 UN World Heritage sites. They represent almost 10% of the Earth's glacierised area and include renowned tourist spots and places sacred to local populations.

Bandhan Bank Opens Currency Chest in Guwahati

  • Bandhan Bank opened its currency chest in Guwahati which will cater to the northeastern region including Assam, an important market for the private lender.
  • This is the second currency chest of the bank after Patna.
  • As per the bank, the currency chest will help cash management for MSME and traders in the North East.
  • A Currency Chest is a depository that belongs to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The central bank stores excess money for banks and ATMs in such a Currency Chest. Such chests are held at the premises of select bank branches across India.

HDFC ERGO Launches First-of-its-kind Satellite Index-based Farm Yield Insurance Policy

  • HDFC ERGO announced the launch of a technology backed farm yield insurance policy for farmers.
  • This is a first-of-its-kind insurance solution, where a satellite-based index will be used to provide localised farm level coverage. It will provide comprehensive cover across the crop life cycle from sowing to harvesting, basis satellite-based data.
  • The product is targeted at farmers under corporate/farm input company (FIC) contracts and is valid for food, oilseed, commercial or horticulture crops.
  • A threshold Index value is calculated for every yield by using the historical satellite imaging data of the specific crop and a remote sensing mechanism available in the public domain. The threshold/benchmark index will be then compared with the actual index value arrived at by the reference satellite for the insured crop, to determine if the yield is at loss.
  • Since the policy is entirely based on technology, no manual survey is required during the claim assessment of the crop.

  • Bank of Baroda and Visa launched two new premium debit cards for Bank of Baroda customers – bob World Opulence - a super-premium Visa Infinite Debit Card (Metal Edition) and bob World Sapphire - a Visa Signature Debit Card.
  • The two debit card variants come with a best-in-class and powerful rewards proposition exclusively designed for the Bank's High Networth Individual (HNI) customer segment.
  • The BoB World Sapphire card will come in two sub-variants – BoB World Sapphire (Male) and BoB World Sapphire (Female), offering customised privileges to customers.

SpaceX Launches World's most Powerful Rocket 'Falcon Heavy' on Space Force Mission

  • SpaceX's Falcon Heavy, the world's most-powerful active rocket, lifted off for the first time in more than three years through dense fog at Florida's Cape Canaveral, with Elon Musk's company sending satellites into orbit for the U.S. Space Force.
  • The rocket system, consisting of three Falcon 9 boosters strapped side-by-side, took off from a SpaceX launch pad, with two satellites from the Space Force and a group of smaller satellites bound for orbit.
  • This mission marked the first use of the rocket by the Space Force, a U.S. military branch established under former President Donald Trump to oversee much of the Pentagon's defense activities in space.

Virat Kohli Becomes All-time Leading Run-scorer in T20 World Cup History

  • Virat Kohli overtook former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene to become the all-time leading run-scorer in T20 World Cup history.
  • Kohli, who boasts of an average of more than 80 and a strike rate of over 130 in T20 World Cups, reached the milestone during India's Super 12 match against Bangladesh.
  • Kohli playing his fifth T20 World Cup went past Jayawardene's 1016 runs in the seventh over of the Indian innings.
  • He is also the highest run-getter in all T20 internationals ahead of compatriot Rohit Sharma (3811), New Zealand's Martin Guptill (3531) and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (3239).

Union Cabinet Approves Naming Hollongi Airport as Donyi Polo Airport

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved naming of greenfield airport at Hollongi, Itanagar, as 'Donyi Polo Airport.
  • The resolution was passed by the state government of Arunachal Pradesh to name the airport as 'Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar', which reflect the people's reverence of the Sun (Donyi) and the Moon (Polo) to symbolize the traditions and rich cultural heritage of the state.
  • The Centre had granted an 'in-principle' approval for development of Hollongi greenfield airport in January 2019. The project is being developed by Airports Authority of India (AAI) with the help of central government and the Arunachal Pradesh government at a cost of Rs. 646 crore.
  • The Donyi Polo Airport in Itanagar is northeast India`s 16th airport.

Goa Hosts Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) Asia Pacific Conference

  • Goa hosted the three day Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) Conference from 1st to 3rd November 2022. Across the three days, delegates and exhibitors from the Asia Pacific region and beyond discussed and collaborated on the key issues that will help shape the future of Asia's aviation industry and turn the Complete Air Traffic System (CATS) Global Council's vision for the skies of 2045 into a reality. Dr Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa, General (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.), Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, and for Road Transport and Highways, Simon Hocquard, Director General, CANSO and Rajiv Bansal, Secretary of Civil Aviation addressed the conference. "Think Global, Collaborate Regional, Accomplish Local" was the theme of this year's conference.
  • CANSO – the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation – is the global voice of the air traffic management (ATM) industry and is shaping our future skies. Its members support over 90% of the world's air traffic and include air navigation service providers, airspace users and operators, manufacturers and aviation industry suppliers. The organization looks on global Air Traffic Management performance by connecting the industry to share knowledge, expertise and innovation.

Khattar Launches 'CM Dashboard' for Live Monitoring of Departments

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched the "CM dashboard" and said that the portal will have real-time data of all departments and decisions taken on major schemes.
  • Live monitoring of every department at the block, district and panchayat levels will be done.
  • The portal will also have information about decisions taken by the administrative wing on major schemes. This will enable tracking of methodology and analysis of reports, further helping in comparison of old and new data.
  • Departments will link their day-to-day activities for effective monitoring, the Chief Minister said. "Whether timelines and deadlines of a particular task are being met can be known. Which department had set what target for a particular task, whether that was achieved or if anyone defaulted and for what reason will be known.

India Secures First Contract for Naval Guns with Indonesia

  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T) secured a contract to deliver 40 mm naval gun systems to the Indonesian Navy, which marks the first-ever export of the weapon system from India to Indonesia.
  • A contract for the weapons was signed with the Indonesian Navy, and it covers the delivery of two Teevra 40 units. L&T will work with Indonesian defence firm BTI Defence on the contract, and the latter will provide after-sales service for the weapon system while it is operational.
  • The Teevra 40 is a naval gun system that has a maximum range of about 11,800 m. For surface targets, it has an effective range of about 3,500 m, while for aerial targets the effective range is about 4,500 m. It can fire various 40 mm/L70 standard NATO rounds.

Elaben Bhatt: Prominent Gandhian, Founder of SEWA Passes Away

  • Elaben Bhatt, founder of Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) and renowned Gandhian, passed away in Ahmedabad. She was 89 years old.
  • Bhatt was a qualified lawyer and had served as the chairperson of the Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust (SAPMT) in the past.
  • She was among the foremost Gandhians of India. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Ela founded SEWA in 1972 which today has a membership of over 2 million self-employed women across 18 states in India.
  • She later founded the Women's World Banking (WWB), a network of microfinance institutions. Between 1984 and 1988, she was the chairperson of WWB. At one time, she also served as the advisor to the World Bank.
  • Bhatt was appointed as the chancellor of the Gujarat Vidyapith, which was also founded by Gandhi. But in 2022, she resigned from the post.
  • In 1985, she received India's fourth-highest civilian honour, Padma Shri. Subsequently, in 1986 she won the third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan. In 2011, for her efforts in empowering women through entrepreneurship, Bhatt received the Gandhi Peace Prize.

Punjab Govt Launches 'Business Blaster Young Entrepreneurship' Scheme

  • With the aim of developing young entrepreneurs at the school-level, the Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains launched the Business Blaster Young Entrepreneurship scheme.
  • According to Bains, the scheme provides Rs. 2,000 as seed money for class 11 students to start businesses.
  • Initially, 31 schools will be involved, including those in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Sangrur, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, Rupnagar, and Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar.
  • Children will be asked to submit business proposals first, and then those proposals will be discussed with established industrialists. Students will be divided into eight groups for a proposal if it is found to be suitable, and they will be given complete guidance.

Garuda Aerospace, IISc Sign MoU for Research Projects, Geographical Surveys

  • City based drone-as-a-service (DaaS) company Garuda Aerospace inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for collaborative research projects.
  • According to Garuda Aerospace, the collaborative research projects using drones, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for applications for geographical surveys for the government and society.
  • The collaborative operational and research projects in these areas may be taken up by Garuda Aerospace and IISc's Department of Aerospace Engineering.
  • According to Agnishwar Jayaprakash, Founder and CEO, Garuda Aerospace, the association with IISc is a step towards realising the company's potential to provide developments of digital input processing packaging tools, including yield estimation from a given image, diagnoses of crops, surveillance and mapping of fields and lands.
  • "This partnership will facilitate the collaborative development of new technology related to surveillance applications using drones that will benefit the farmers, the government and the country as a whole. IISc will provide a central cloud platform for storage of data.

French Author Rene Naba Releases New Book "Nuclearization of Asia"

  • French Author Rene Naba has authored a new bilingual book in both French and English titled "De la Nucléarisation de l'Asie"(Nuclearization of Asia). The book discusses the nuclear emergency and threat posed by the nexus of Pakistan and China. The book published by Golias was released at the Geneva Press Club which was attended by the in­person participation of 35 people and 23 of them participated in virtual mode.
  • René Naba is the author of 2 books on Asia. The 1st book was "Pakistan facing the challenge of the post­Western world and Eurasia" Golias 2018, the first book in French on the strategic mutation of Pakistan. Rene Naba is the former head of the Arab Muslim world in the diplomatic service of AFP and vice president of the International Center for the Fight against Terrorism.

SC Dismisses Plea to Block Justice Chandrachud's Appointment as Next CJI

  • The Supreme Court dismissed a petition which sought to stop Justice D. Y. Chandrachud from taking oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI).
  • The petition sought contempt of court and criminal action against Justice Chandrachud besides restricting him to be appointed as the next CJI.
  • As per the bench of CJI UU Lalit, and Justices S. Ravindra Bhat and Bela M. Trivedi, the petition was entirely 'misconceived'.
  • The petition was filed by lawyer Mursalin Asijit Shaikh who alleged that Justice Chandracud had, on many occasions, wilfully disregarded the binding precedents of larger benches of the apex court and denied justice to litigants.
