Atul Chaturvedi Elected as First Chairman of Asian Palm Oil Alliance

  • The apex edible oil industry associations from five major palm oil importing countries of Asia -- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal -- came together and formed the Asian Palm Oil Alliance (APOA).
  • APOA was launched during the Globoil Summit at Agra on September 21.
  • The first general body meeting of the Alliance elected Atul Chaturvedi, Director of Adani Wilmar Ltd and President of SEA, as the first Chairman. The website and logo of the APOA were also launched on the occasion. The APOA secretariat would initially be managed by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA).
  • APOA is expected to safeguard the economic and business interests of the palm-oil consuming countries and create a level-playing field for all fats and oils used in food, feed and oleo-chemicals in Asia. It will further work towards increasing the consumption of sustainable palm oil in member countries.

NCC, UNEP Sign MoU to Tackle Plastic Pollution

  • The National Cadet Corps (NCC) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to tackle the issue of plastic pollution and achieve the universal goal of clean water bodies through ' Puneet Sagar Abhiyan' and 'Tide Turners Plastic Challenge programme'.
  • The MoU was signed between Director-General NCC Lt. Gen. Gurbirpal Singh and Resident Representative, UN World Food Programme Bishow Parajuli in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
  • The aim of the MoU between the NCC and the UNEP is to synergise and collate efforts towards engaging youth for promoting clean water bodies.
  • The MoU, to remain in force for a period of three years, aims at consolidating, developing and detailing their cooperation and effectiveness to achieve the common objectives in the field of environment.

Biological E's Mahima Datla Richest woman in AP, Telangana

  • With a wealth of Rs. 8,700 crore, Mahima Datla and family, promoter of Biological E Ltd is the richest woman in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to feature in the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022.
  • She is in the 10th position when it comes to overall list of both the states.
  • Krishna Ella, chairman and managing drector of Bharat Biotech International Limited and his family for the first time figured in the list with Rs. 4,700 crore wealth in 18th position.
  • Commenting on the launch of the India Rich List, Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India, said, "The number of entrants in IIFL Wealth Hurun AP and Telangana Rich List has grown from just under three, 11 years ago to 78 today.

UCO Bank Becomes First Lender to Get RBI's Approval for Rupee Trade

  • Public sector lender UCO Bank received the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) approval to open a special vostro account with Gazprombank of Russia for trade settlement in Indian rupees. The Kolkata-based lender is the first bank to receive regulator's approval following the RBI's decision to allow Indian banks to settle trade in Indian currency.
  • The Russian lender, which was set up by world's largest gas producer and exporter Gazprom to provide banking services for gas industry enterprises has been operating since 1990. One of the top three banks in Russia, Gazprombank offers a whole range of banking and investment services to over 45,000 corporate and three million private clients.

Saturn's Moon Enceladus more Habitable than Previously Thought

  • New research presented evidence for a key building block of life on Saturn's moon Enceladus' subsurface ocean. Modelling indicated that the ocean on Enceladus is relatively rich in dissolved phosphorus, which is an essential ingredient for life.
  • Enceladus is one of the prime targets in humanity's search for life in our solar system. In the years since NASA's Cassini spacecraft visited the Saturn system, we have been repeatedly blown away by the discoveries made possible by the collected data.
  • NASA's Cassini spacecraft discovered the subsurface liquid water on Enceladus and analysed samples of plumes of ice grains and water vapour that erupted into space from cracks in the icy surface of the planet.

Harmanpreet Powers India to First Series Win in England in 23 Years

  • Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur smashed a scintillating unbeaten ton to power India to a comprehensive 88-run win in the second ODI, that sealed country's first series win against England since 1999.
  • A vintage Harmanpreet rekindled the memories of 2017 World Cup with a magnificent 143 not out which came off just 111 balls as India put on board a mammoth 333 for 5.
  • India bundled out England for 245 in 44.5 overs with medium pacer Renuka Singh (4/57) claiming four wickets.
  • The last time Indian women won an ODI series in England was in 1999 when they triumphed 2-1.

Nagaland Prison Department Introduces Mobile Attendance Application

  • Nagaland Prison Department went digital by introducing the mobile attendance application for Prison staff. Advisor for Prisons, Printing & Stationery, H. Haiying launched the Prison staff Attendance App at the District Jail, Kohima. The mobile app was initiated by the State Prison Department in collaboration with Excellogics Technology Solution Private Limited.
  • The Prison Staff Attendance is a mobile app along with an admin portal that aims to provide a comprehensive attendance management system that can make processes hassle-free and provide a seamlessly integrated system for monitoring and tracking the employee's attendance.

Sarbananda Sonowal Inaugurates Conference on Consciousness

  • An international conference -- Exploring consciousness non-duality to non-locality: A man-machine debate -- was inaugurated at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). The conference's vision is to exchange ideas and debate information in the domain and understand its importance in the scientific community.
  • It was inaugurated by Union Minister of Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, in presence of NIMHANS director Dr. Pratima Murty. Many national and international speakers from physics, biology, neuroscience, AI, allied fields and Indian spiritual schools discussed and debated on various topics. International experts like Dr. Terrence Deacon, professor, University of Berkeley; Dr. George Northoff, Royals Institute of Mental Health Research, Canada, and others were present.

Congress Issues Notification for Party President's Poll

  • The Congress' central election authority issued a notification for the party presidential election, setting in motion a process to elect successor to the party's longest-serving leader, Sonia Gandhi.
  • Election authority chairman Madhusudan Mistry issued the notification, which said that the process of filing nominations will be held from September 24 to 30.
  • The date of scrutiny of nomination papers would be October 1. The last date for the withdrawal of nominations would be October 8.
  • If there is more than one candidate, the election will take place on October 17. The counting of votes and declaration of results will be on October 19.

Two Diving Support Vessels of Indian Navy Launched in Visakhapatnam

  • The Indian Navy got two Diving Support Vessels (DSVs), indigenously built by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, Visakhapatnam.
  • Admiral R. Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, was the chief guest at the launching ceremony. The vessels were launched by Kala Hari Kumar, President of the Navy Welfare and Wellness Association (NWWA).
  • The first of its kind indigenously designed vessels are 118.4 metres long, 22.8 metres at the broadest point and will have a displacement of 9,350 tons.
  • These ships would be deployed for deep sea diving operations. Additionally, with Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) embarked, the DSVs are designed to undertake submarine rescue operations, in case a requirement exists. Furthermore, these ships will be capable of sustained patrolling, conducting search and rescue operations and carrying out helicopter operations at the high seas.
  • The contract for the construction of the two vessels was signed with the Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in 2018.

  • This will be the first time the two will make an on-screen appearance together. The company plans to target the millennial audience and convey the importance of having life insurance and build and enhance the importance of financial preparedness and protection through this strategic alliance.

Sukhadia and Parmar Receive 'Best MLA' Award Gujarat

  • The Gujarat Assembly gave the "Best MLA" award to BJP MLA Jitu Sukhadia for the year 2021, while Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar received the award for 2022.
  • Announcing the names, Speaker Nimaben Acharya remembered former Speaker Rajendra Trivedi who began these awards in the state legislature.
  • Vadodara, Sukhadia has been doing the work of this House for the past 20 years.
  • Shailesh Parmar who represents Danilimda constituency said that this was his fourth term as an MLA from Ahmedabad.

  • The Rajasthan Assembly passed the Rajasthan Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which proposes that the registration of companies would not be cancelled even if they fail to file the return for six months.

Panel Formed for UGC, AICTE to Work Together on Higher Education Policies

  • In a development that sets the stage for establishment of the proposed Higher Education Commission of India (HECI), a committee was set up to prepare a roadmap for University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to work together as a single regulatory entity.
  • The committee, set up by UGC chairperson Prof M. Jagadesh Kumar, would initially identify areas where the two regulators can work with a common approach towards drawing up policies and regulations.
  • The development came at a time when the government is planning to introduce the Bill to set up HECI in the winter session of Parliament.
  • Members of the committee include vice-chairpersons of UGC and AICTE, as well as the UGC secretary and AICTE member-secretary.

  • The book focuses on 86 speeches of the Prime Minister on various subjects.
  • The book portrays the Prime Minister's vision of a 'New India', which is self-reliant, resilient and capable of converting challenges into opportunities.

People with Criminal Antecedents cannot be Permitted to Work in BARC: Bombay High Court

  • The Bombay High Court said that the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is a place where sensitive work takes place and a person with criminal antecedents cannot be permitted to be apt of it.
  • The Court dismissed a petition filed by an applicant whose job application was rejected at BARC since he did not disclose a criminal case pending against him.
  • A division bench of Justices Sanjay Gangapurwala and Justice R. N. Laddha said that honesty and integrity are main requirements for a government job.
  • The Court in its order said that BARC is the nation's premier research centre which is engaged in advanced research and development activities of nuclear science.
  • The bench was hearing plea filed by Swapnil Parab, who had applied for the post of Hospital Work Assistant at BARC in 2016, but had not mentioned about a criminal case pending against him since 2012.
