Biden Nominates Veteran Foreign Service Officer as Ambassador to Russia
President Joe Biden formally nominated a veteran foreign service officer with years of experience in Russian affairs to be the next US ambassador to Russia.
The White House announced the nomination of Lynne Tracy, the current US ambassador to Armenia, to the post after the Russian government signed off on the choice. Tracy's selection had been known for some time but had not been announced pending Russia's approval. Ambassadorial nominations must be approved by the host government under the rules of diplomatic protocol.
Tracy, who speaks Russian, previously served as a senior adviser for Russian affairs in the State Department's Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, and as the deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Moscow.
Kotak Mahindra Bank Launches "Kotak IITM Save Energy Mission"
Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited and the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IITM) announced their CSR partnership and launched Kotak IITM Save Energy Mission. The Hon'ble Minister of Education, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the initiative.
Under Kotak's CSR Project on Environment and Sustainable Development, KMBL is funding IITM to establish five centres across India to promote energy efficiency for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector. IIT Madras (IITM) at the Chennai campus will be the hub of Kotak IITM Save Energy Mission, which in turn will engage with IIT Bombay (IITB), IIT Gandhinagar (IITG), IIT Indore (IITI), and IIT Ropar (IITR) to establish four satellite centres for carrying out energy efficiency and performance audits and encouraging adoption of various energy conservation measures in the Indian MSME sector. These audits will focus on identifying inefficiencies in energy utilisation, process operations and safety-related concerns. The hub at IITM will monitor and implement energy assessment activities across India.
The satellite centres will identify MSMEs that qualify for Industrial Energy Assessment services and carry out audits and share recommendations for saving energy with them. Further, Kotak IITM Save Energy Mission will provide assistance and training to MSMEs for periodic audits. Furthermore, an online platform will be developed to maintain the entire database on the energy audits conducted.
India's Rich Club Grows to 1,103; Zepto's Kaivalya Youngest in Hurun List
One hundred and forty nine new individuals joined the rich list club of 1,103 Indians across 122 cities who cumulatively accumulated a wealth of Rs. 100 trillion. Bengaluru -based Kaivalya Vohra, 19, of grocery delivery application Zepto is the youngest self-made and the youngest rich individual, according to IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022.
The report found 1,103 Indians with a networth of Rs. 1,000 crore each — an increase of 62 per cent over five years. There are 221 billionaires (Rs. 100 crore networth) in India on the 2022 list — down 16 compared with last year, while 13 people born in the 1990s made it to the list, all self-made.
Swiggy, Zomato Make it to top 10 Global Online Food Delivery Firms
Home-grown online food delivery platforms Zomato and Swiggy made it to the list of the world's 'Top 10' e-commerce-based food delivery companies, says a new report.
According to the Canada-headquartered global research firm ETC Group, Swiggy was placed in 9th place and Zomato on 10th.
Meanwhile, China's Meituan, the UK's Deliveroo, and the US' Uber Eats, a subsidiary of Uber, captured the top 3 positions, respectively.
RBI directs Mahindra Finance to Stop Outsourcing its Recovery Activity through Agents
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directed Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Ltd (MMFSL) to immediately stop any recovery or repossession operations through outsourcing arrangements, till further orders.
However, RBI said the NBFC may continue with recovery or repossession activities through its own employees.
The RBI action comes after a 27-year-old pregnant woman was crushed to death under the wheels of a tractor being forcibly driven away by the recovery agent of MMFSL in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand.

Elvis Ali Hazarika a veteran Assamese swimmer became the first from the North-east to cross the North Channel. The strait between north-eastern Northern Ireland and south-western Scotland is the North Channel.
Elvis Ali Hazarika also became the oldest Indian swimmer to swim across the North Channel. To attain this feat, Elvis and his team clocked a timing of 14 hours 38 minutes.
In 2019, he became the first person from Assam to swim across the Catalina Channel in the United States of America.
Elvis also became the first Assamese to successfully swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway of India, the Arabian Sea, in November 2021. The length of which is approx 38 kilometres.
Centre Appoints Retired Gujarat IFoS Officer Bharat Lal as Director General NCGG
The Union Government appointed senior bureaucrat and retired Gujarat cadre IFoS officer, Bharat Lal as the Director General, National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG).
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi cleared the appointment on contract basis, initially for a period of one year.
Bharat Lal had served as Gujarat government's resident commissioner in Delhi and has been known to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister of the state.
Earlier, during December 2021, Lal was appointed as the Secretary to the Lokpal.

The SCALE (Skill Certification Assessment for Leather Employees) app was unveiled by Minister of Education and Skill Development Dharmendra Pradhan at the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR)-Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) in Chennai. This app provides a one-stop solution for the education, testing, and employment requirements of the leather sector.
The Leather Skill Sector Council built the SCALE android app to revolutionise how skill development programmes are planned and delivered to trainees in the leather industry.
Defence Ministry Signs MoU with Bank of Baroda, HDFC Bank under SPARSH- System for Pension Administration Initiative
The Defence Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding, MoU, with Bank of Baroda and HDFC Bank under the SPARSH- System for Pension Administration initiative with an objective to cover seventeen lakh, defence pensioners, across the country.
Defence Secretary Dr. Ajay Kumar said that seventeen lakh pensioners out of the total thirty-two lakh defence pensioners would be added with SPARSH by the end of this month. The remaining pensioners would be brought at the earliest. The Defence Secretary highlighted that the average time in pension settlement has come down significantly to about 16 days.
The Ministry said that the MoU would onboard more than 14 thousand bank branches as Service Centres to provide an effective medium for pensioners to perform profile update requests, register grievances and seek redressal, pensioner data verification and many more. It mentioned that so far, the SPARSH initiative has crossed one million pensioners onboard mark and disbursed 11 thousand 6 hundred crore rupees in the 2021-22 fiscal year.
The International Day of Sign Languages is observed on September 23 every year. The UN General Assembly decided to commemorate the day as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realisation of the human rights of people who are deaf.
According to the UN, the International Day of Sign Languages was first celebrated in the year 2018 as part of the International Week of the Deaf.
The theme for International Day of Sign Languages 2022 was "Sign Languages Unite Us."

Govt. Approves PLI Scheme for Manufacturing Solar PV Modules
The Cabinet approved a Rs. 19,500-crore production linked incentive (PLI) scheme on 'national programme on high efficiency solar PV modules' with an aim to attract Rs. 94,000 crore investment in the sector.
One of the benefits expected from the PLI scheme is that about 65,000 MW per annum manufacturing capacity of fully and partially integrated solar PV modules would be installed.
The national programme aims to build an ecosystem for manufacturing of high efficiency solar PV modules in India and reduce import dependence in the area of renewable energy.
The initiative is expected to reduce import substitution of about Rs 1.37 lakh crore.
To cater for the growing need and demand for modern technologies, the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur would launch a new engineering-linked four-year BS programme in Chemistry and Physics with specialisation.
The Institute has designed the new programs aligned with global needs. The programs will impart fundamental knowledge in basic science and engineering in the first year. In the second and third years, the students will undergo comprehensive theoretical and experimental courses in advanced concepts of Chemistry and Physics in the respective programmes, and in the final year, these programmes will enable the students to specialise in a focused area in the forefront of science.
Union Minister of State for Culture Meenakshi Lekhi unveiled a vibrant mural in south Delhi depicting 75 major historical sites and famous places of the city, as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.
From the Mughal-era Red Fort to the British-era India Gate, and from Parliament House to the National War Memorial, a whole range of subjects have been displayed in the mural.
Qutub Minar, the giant statue of Lord Hanuman at Jhandewalan, Jantar Mantar, and Humayun's Tomb are among other landmarks portrayed in it.
The mural was done by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in association with Street Art India.
Supreme Court Concludes Hearing in Hijab Case, Reserves Judgment
The Supreme Court reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court judgement refusing to lift the ban on hijab in educational institutions of the state.
On March 15, the High Court had dismissed petitions filed by a section of Muslim students from the Government Pre-University Girls College in Udupi seeking permission to wear hijab inside the classroom, saying it is not a part of the essential religious practice in Islamic faith.
The state government had, by its order of February 5, 2022, banned wearing clothes that disturb equality, integrity, and public order in schools and colleges.
Several pleas were been filed in the apex court challenging the high court verdict.
A bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia reserved its verdict in the matter.
