Piyush Goyal Takes Part in the First in-person Ministerial Meeting of the Indo-Pacific Economic Forum

  • Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal attended the first in-person Ministerial meeting of the India-Pacific Economic Forum (IPEF) in Los Angeles.
  • Interacting with media on the side-lines of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Ministerial Meeting, the Minister assured that India would take decisions on different aspects of the frameworks of IPEF based on our national interest.
  • Goyal said that there have been very useful engagements with the 14 members of the IPEF and added that the officials from member nations had worked very hard to prepare ground for such fruitful interactions.
  • He expressed hope that in a day's time, IPEF would finalize a framework within which member nations could interact on different areas of mutual interest.
  • Ahead of the Ministerial meeting of the Indo Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, Goyal had met Australian Trade Minister H.E. Don Farrell in Los Angeles.
  • Goyal also held a meeting with US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on the side-lines of IPEF Ministerial meeting in Los Angeles.

King Charles Proclaimed Britain's New Monarch

  • King Charles III was officially proclaimed Britain's monarch rday in a historic ceremony at St. James' Palace. Charles automatically became the king when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died and in a ceremonial step the Accession Council formalized him as the sovereign- officially confirming his position.
  • The ceremony at St. James's Palace, a royal residence in London, was attended by the Accession Council which comprises senior politicians and officials who advise the monarch.
  • King Charles III was accompanied at the ceremony by his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, and his eldest son Prince William who will now be heir to the throne and known by the title Prince of Wales.

India stays out of Trade Policy Pillar at IPEF (Indo-Pacific Economic Forum)

  • India stayed out of the joint declaration on the trade pillar of the U.S.-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework ministerial meet in Los Angeles, with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal citing concerns over possible discrimination against developing economies.
  • India was the only one of the 14 IPEF countries, which included South East Asian countries, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Japan, not to join the declaration on trade.
  • The decision to stay out came just four months after the launch of the talks by the IPEF leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the sidelines of the Quad Summit in Tokyo in May.

Fortune India Rich List 2022: 142 Billionaires Worth $832 Billion

  • The wealth of 142 billionaires based in India is collectively worth $832 billion (Rs 66.36 trillion), according to a Fortune India's list of 'India's Richest' for 2022.
  • The maiden list, made in collaboration with wealth management firm, Waterfield Advisors, is primarily based on the wealth of entrepreneurs of listed firms; where the entity is unlisted, the price-earnings (PE) multiple of the sector's index, and, in the absence of an industry index, the PE multiple of the closest-listed company from the same industry was used.

Sonjoy Mohonty Replaces Abinash Verma as New ISMA Director General

  • Sonjoy Mohonty was appointed as new Director General of Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the premier body of private sugar millers in the country. He replaced Abinash Verma, who stepped down a few months back.
  • Mohonty was secretary general of the International Spirits and Wines Association of India. He has over 35 years of work experience in corporations across oil and gas, micro banking, healthcare, telecom and durables.

SpiceJet Appoints Ashish Kumar as CFO

  • Budget carrier SpiceJet appointed Ashish Kumar as its Chief Financial Officer.
  • Kumar succeeded Sanjeev Taneja, who quit the struggling carrier on August 31.
  • Before joining the Gurugram-based low-cost airline, Kumar was serving as vice president for corporate finance at Interglobe Enterprises since January 2019.
  • Previously, he served as Chief Financial Officer at Interglobe Hotels for five years from 2014 to 2018.
  • "Restructuring SpiceJet and putting it back on a path of rapid growth is the best job in the aviation industry today. Ashish's experience and proven track record will ensure that he can successfully lead this effort," said Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet.

Water-rich Exoplanets Discovered Outside Our Solar System

  • In a major accomplishment in the investigation of life beyond our Earth, researchers found a third category of exoplanets, rich in water, revolving around the red dwarf stars, the most common and long-lived stars. It is an epochal step because, for the first time, the habitability of other planets can be scientifically proven.
  • According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), an exoplanet is a planet that is orbiting other stars beyond our solar system.

Australia Captain Aaron Finch Retires from ODI Cricket

  • Aaron Finch, Australia's captain announced his retirement from one-day international cricket after Australia's third and final ODI against New Zealand. Finch would continue to be the captain of the Australian cricket team for T20 and would lead it in defense of its world title in the T20 World Cup which is going to be held in October and November in Australia.
  • Finch is known as one of the most damaging opening batters in the world, Finch has scored 5,401 runs in the ODI format with an average of close to 40, and 17 centuries.

US Open 2022: Iga Swiatek Clinches Maiden Women's Singles Title

  • World number one Iga Swiatek scripted history when she beat Tunisia's Ons Jabeur 6-2 7-6(5) in the US Open final) to clinch her maiden trophy at Flushing Meadows and third Grand Slam crown. Poland's Swiatek fell on her back and covered her face with her hands after prevailing in the tight second set tiebreak, having sealed the win when the fifth seed's shot sailed long.

Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lanka Beat Pakistan

  • Coming off a socio-economic crisis and the worst turmoil in its country's history, the Sri Lankan cricket team gifted the island nation joy and the sixth Asia Cup title as they defeated Pakistan by 23 runs in the final in Dubai, their fifth T20I win on the trot. Batting first, Sri Lanka rode on Bhanuska Rajapaksa's unbeaten 71 off 45 balls to power the team to 170/6 in 20 overs. In reply, Pakistan was never in the chase losing early wickets.

Chhattisgarh CM Inaugurates 2 New Districts in the State

  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel inaugurated Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur and Sakti as the 32nd and 33rd districts of the state.
  • Sakti is carved out from Janjgir-Champa while Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur has been demarcated from Koriya district.
  • The Chattisgarh Chief Minister said that people have been demanding the creation of the Manendragarh district for a very long time and it has been a long-term struggle to create Manendragarh as a district.

E-FAST- India's First National Electric Freight Platform

  • NITI Aayog, in collaboration with World Resources Institute (WRI), India, launched the country's first national electric freight platform – e-FAST India (Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport – India). Supported by the World Economic Forum, CALSTART and RMI India, the platform brings different stakeholders together, from across the freight ecosystem. It will help strengthen partnerships and identify and support innovative freight solutions. The platform also aims to raise awareness on freight electrification bolstered by on-ground demonstration pilots and evidence-based research.

Bihar CM Inaugurated India's Longest Rubber Dam on Falgu River

  • Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar inaugurated India's longest rubber dam 'Gayaji Dam' on the Falgu River in Gaya. The dam was built at an estimated cost of Rs. 324 crore. Experts from IIT (Roorkee) were involved with the project. There would be enough water in the dam round the year for the convenience of pilgrims. With its construction, now at least two feet of water would be available in the Falgu River near Vishnupad Ghat throughout the year for the devotees who come here to do Pind Daan.
  • The rubber dam on the Falgu River, which is a vast stretch of sand dunes, would draw more pilgrims and change the landscape. The dam, aimed at providing uninterrupted water supply to Vishnupad Temple in Gaya throughout the year.

Indian Army, Air Force Conduct Joint Exercise 'Gagan Strike' in Punjab

  • Army's Kharga Corps and the Indian Air Force conducted a joint exercise to showcase the might and prowess of the armed forces.
  • Termed "Gagan Strike", the exercise was conducted over a period of four days in several areas of Punjab, bordering Ambala in Haryana.
  • The operation validated the Apache 64E and Advanced Light Helicopter WSI as potent weapon delivery platforms.
  • Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding, Kharga Corps, who spearheaded this exercise, also showcased precision firepower by attack helicopters in coordination with ground forces' mechanised columns.
  • The exercise was also attended by Lt Gen Nav K Khanduri, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Command, who exhorted the forces to continue to evolve such concepts and remain prepared to counter any contingency on the western borders.

Wildlife Board Okays New IAF Base in Ladakh

  • The standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) cleared the setting up of a new IAF base in Ladakh where Indian and Chinese troops have been facing off along the Line of Actual Control since May 2020.
  • The clearance for the IAF base was given at a high-level meeting. The base, which would be located in the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary in eastern Ladakh, would be spread over 508.187 hectares of land, not very far from the LAC.
  • The NBWL cleared eight Defence projects in the Changthang and Karakoram wildlife sanctuaries as India takes steps to ramp up its defence infrastructure near the LAC to match similar initiatives being taken by China to upgrade its military infrastructure in the area.

Indian Navy Launches Stealth Frigate 'Taragiri' in Mumbai

  • Taragiri', the third stealth frigate of the Indian Navy's Project 17A, was launched in Mumbai. This ship was built using an integrated construction methodology which involved hull block construction in different geographical locations and integration and erection on the slipway at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL).
  • The keel of 'Taragiri' was laid on September 10, 2020. The ship is expected to be delivered by August 2025. The vessel is being launched with an approximate launch weight of 3,510 tonnes. The frigate is designed by the Indian Navy's in-house design organization, the Bureau of Naval Design. The MDL undertook the detailed design and construction of the ship which is also overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai). The total value of Project 17A is around Rs. 25,700 crore.

Pintola Names Sunil Chhetri as Brand Ambassador

  • Pintola, the homegrown food brand, got onboard the skipper of the Indian national football team, Sunil Chhetri, as brand ambassador.
  • The renowned Indian football player would be the face of the entity's nut butter brand in a multi-year deal. With this collaboration, Chhetri marked his first collaboration with an FMCG brand in the country.
  • Pintola was launched in 2012, and since then it has been helmed as one of the leading brands in India in its respective category. It is also one of the major brands in online sales across e-commerce mediums.

Archaeologist B. B. Lal Passes Away

  • Veteran archaeologist and Padma Vibhushan awardee BB Lal died aged 101. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid rich tributes, saying that he will be remembered as a great intellectual who "deepened our connect with our rich past".
  • Mr. Lal served as the director general of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) from 1968 to 1972. He had reportedly found temple-like pillars during excavation at the Ayodhya site in the mid-70s, where the Ram temple is now being built.

WB Govt. UNICEF Rope in SHGs to Stop Child Marriage, Teenage Pregnancy

  • The West Bengal government in collaboration with UNICEF would form child-friendly 'sanghas' (clusters), comprising members of self-help groups (SHG), to curb child marriage and teenage pregnancy in the state, which is the highest in the country.
  • To stop these twin menaces, the state government and UNICEF planned, as a pilot project, to form 110 child-friendly 'sanghas' in the next six months in 87 blocks in all 23 districts of the state.
  • This initiative is aimed at addressing the issues that affect the lives of SHG members and their family members," Vibhu Goel, State Mission Director and CEO of West Bengal State Rural Livelihood Mission (SRLM), said at the end of a validation workshop.

US Issued the Highest Number of Student Visas to Indians in 2022

  • As per the US Embassy in India, the United States issued a record of 82,000 student visas to Indians in 2022, the highest than any country.
  • This shows that the United States remains for most Indian families the most sought-after country for higher education.
  • Indian students comprise nearly 20 per cent of all international students studying in the United States, with the Open Doors report in 2021 showing there were 1,67,582 students from India in the 2020-2021 academic year.

NCERT Approaches UGC for 'Deemed University' Status

  • With the government's proposal of making the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) an "institute of national importance" on the back burner, the NCERT is now vying for another tag — deemed to be university.
  • NCERT, an autonomous academic body advising the Centre on matters of school education, is learned to have applied to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the "deemed university" status under the de novo category.

Transgender Denied Job by Airlines, Supreme Court Directs Centre to Frame Policy for their Employment

  • The Supreme Court directed the Central Government to frame a policy, in consultation with the National Council for Transgender Persons, regarding employment avenues for transgender persons under the provisions of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.
  • The Bench of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli further asked the Department of Personnel Training (DoPT), Government of India and the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment to consult all stakeholders in formulation of the policy.
  • The top court of the country noted that the 2019 Act marked a watershed in the rights of transgender persons, but the same needed to be implemented in letter and spirit by formulating appropriate policies.
  • The Apex Court passed the order on a petition filed by transgender Shanavi Ponnuswamy, who was allegedly denied the cabin crew position by Air India, due to her sexual orientation.
