UK PM Liz Truss Appoints Diverse Cabinet in Complete Shake-up of Old Guard

  • Prime Minister Liz Truss held her first Cabinet meeting at 10 Downing Street in London after announcing one of the UK's most diverse Cabinets, with key frontline posts going to ethnic minority members of Parliament, including Indian-origin Suella Braverman as the Home Secretary.
  • Another Indian-origin minister in the Cabinet, Agra-born Alok Sharma, retained his climate action job as the COP26 President, as did Defence Secretary Ben Wallace in a new top team that is otherwise a complete shake-up of the old guard.
  • London-born junior minister Ranil Jayawardena, of mixed Sri Lankan and Indian heritage, was promoted as the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
  • Many senior Tories, who had backed Truss' rival, British Indian former finance minister Rishi Sunak, find themselves without a job including former justice secretary Dominic Raab, transport secretary Grant Shapps and health secretary Steve Barclay.

Eastern Economic Forum 2022 Held in Vladivostok

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a video address at the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum 2022 held in Russia's Vladivostok. Prime Minister Modi was the Chief Guest at the EEF in 2019. At the seventh Eastern Economic Forum participants from more than 60 countries participated. The theme for Eastern Economic Forum 2022 was "The Path to a Multipolar World".

Tripura Sets up the India's First Bio-Villages

  • Tripura became the first state in India to have the first modified bio-village. The Daspara village of Tripura is converted into a nature-based lifestyle and livelihood and reduced the use of chemical fertilizers. Dasapara is a home for 64 families which depends on agriculture and fishery. Daspara is one of the five successful bio-villages 2.0 conceptualized in Tripura after the BJP came into power and adopted the Climate change mitigation endeavor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PSU Banks Set to Open about 300 Branches in Unbanked Areas by December 2022

  • As part of the financial inclusion drive, public sector banks would open about 300 brick-and-mortar branches in the unbanked areas of various states by December 2022. These new branches would cover all remaining unbanked villages with a population of more than 3,000. A Maximum number of 95 branches would be opened in Rajasthan followed by 54 in Madhya Pradesh. The public sector banks would open 38 branches in Gujarat, 33 in Maharashtra, 32 in Jharkhand and 31 in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Bank of Baroda will open 76 branches, while State Bank of India will establish 60 branches. Financial Inclusion is a national priority of the government as it is an enabler for inclusive growth.

Mahanagar Gas Ltd Appoints Mahesh V. Iyer as New Chairman

  • State-run city gas utility, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), appointed Mahesh Vishwanathan Iyer as the company's new Chairman. Iyer was director (Business Development) with GAIL (India) Limited till last month. Gail is the promoter of MGL. Iyer is an electrical engineer with more than 36 years of experience in the execution of projects in the areas of gas pipelines, LNG terminals, city gas distribution projects, renewables etc, amounting to Rs. 40,000 crore.
  • Iyer was part of the core team of Gail for the implementation of various long-term and short-term strategies and is chairperson of Konkan LNG Limited and Central U.P. Gas Limited in addition to holding directorship in ONGC Tripura Power Company Limited.
  • Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) is an Indian natural gas distribution company, incorporated on 8 May 1995. MGL is an enterprise of GAIL (India) Limited (Maharatna Company of Government of India) and the Government of Maharashtra.

Axis Bank Ties up with PayNearby

  • Axis Bank aims to meet its priority sector lending targets in an organic manner, and partnered with technology-based company PayNearby to boost its credit growth in the segment.
  • The tie-up will be used to set up current and savings accounts for both retail and individual customers in remote areas.
  • As per Reserve Bank of India guidelines, 40 per cent of net bank credit is to be extended to the priority sector, which includes agriculture and micro, small and medium enterprises.

TCS to Redesign Nokia's Human Capital Management System in 130 Countries

  • Telecom gear maker Nokia selected Tata Consultancy Services for redesigning its employee management system across 130 countries where it operates.
  • Under the agreement, TCS would redesign Nokia's human capital management processes and deploy a new cloud-based platform to drive simplification for a better employee experience.
  • In 2021, Nokia had launched its 'One Nokia Digital' strategy to support the company's competitiveness by digitalising its operations.
  • Nokia is now replacing its on-premise HR systems with a new cloud-based Human Capital Management platform (HCM) to standardise HR processes on a common data platform. This will enable Nokia to provide a consistent employee experience across teams and more easily manage and scale HR services globally.

PCA Renames Stands at Mohali Stadium after Home Grown Stars Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh

  • Cricket is set to return to the IS Bindra PCA International Stadium at Mohali on September 20, with the Punjab Cricket Association adding to the cheer by giving fans the option of witnessing the action up close and personal from stands renamed after two local legends of the game — Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh.
  • The Punjab Cricket Association renamed its famous Terrace Block after former Indian spinner and current Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh — who has represented India in 103 Test, 236 ODI and 28 T20I and picked up a total of 711 wickets in all the three formats. The North Pavilion of the stadium, similarly, has been named after Yuvraj Singh, who played in 40 Test, 304 ODI and 58 T20I matches for India and scored 11,778 runs, besides claiming 148 wickets in all three formats.

61st Edition of Subroto Cup International Football Tournament

  • The 61st edition of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament began after a gap of two years, at the BR Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi marking the start of the most prestigious football tournament for schools all over the country. The tournament, organised by the Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society (SMSES) along with the Indian Air Force, kicked-off the first match in the Under-14 Boys category between National Cadet Corps (NCC) and Govt. Model HSS, Sector 36, Chandigarh which finished in a goalless draw.
  • A total of 92 schools representing 25 States and Union Territories of India have qualified across the three (U-14 Boys, U-17 Girls, U-17 Boys) categories and Air Force School, Bangladesh will also be competing in the tournament.

Government Sets Up Kirit Parikh Committee to Moderate Gas Prices

  • The government set up a panel to review the formula that dictates the pricing of gas produced by companies like ONGC and Reliance as it looks to moderate the steep increase that producers would have otherwise got. The committee under former planning commission member Kirit Parikh would suggest a fair price to the end consumer.
  • The panel, which will include representatives of the gas producers association as also producers ONGC and OIL, has been asked to submit its report by the month-end.

Amit Kumar Appointed as Next Ambassador of India to Republic of Korea

  • Amit Kumar, an IFS officer of the 1995 batch, was appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea.
  • Earlier, the position was held by Sripriya Ranganathan, an Indian Foreign Services (IFS) officer of the 1994 batch. Before joining the Foreign Services, Ranganathan obtained her Master's Degree in History, with a specialisation in Modern Indian History, from Delhi University.
  • She served in Myanmar as the second in command at the Embassy of India, Yangon. Her other overseas postings were in Ankara and Hong Kong.

Digital India Mission: Uttar Pradesh Tops in Use of e-Prosecution Portal

  • Uttar Pradesh, with 9.12 million cases, ranks at the top in the number of disposal and entry of cases through the e-Prosecution portal managed by the Union government under its Digital India Mission. According to the figures till the end of August, Madhya Pradesh followed in second spot at 2.31 million, Bihar with 859,000, Gujarat with 487,000 and Chhattisgarh with 383,000 cases. UP also ranked at the top in disposal of online cases on this portal, with about 470,000 entries, followed by 170,000 for MP and 125,000 for Gujarat. The portal launched by states two years ago is an initiative of the home, IT and law ministries for helping courts and the prosecution system in accelerating criminal trials in heinous crimes.

India Successfully Test-fires Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile System

  • India successfully completed flight-tests of six Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur off the Odisha coast. The flight tests were conducted as part of evaluation trials by the Indian Army.
  • The flight-tests were carried out against high-speed aerial targets mimicking various types of threats to evaluate the capability of the weapon systems under different scenarios, including long range medium altitude, short range, high altitude manoeuvring target, low radar signature with receding and crossing target and salvo launch with two missiles fired in quick succession.
  • As per DRDO, during these tests, all the mission objectives were met establishing pin-point accuracy of the weapon system with state-of-the-art guidance and control algorithms, including warhead chain.

Indian Boxer Birju Sah Passes Away

  • Indian boxer, Birju Sah passed away at the age of 48. He was the first Indian boxer to win medals at both the Asian and Commonwealth Games. Birju Sah won bronze medals at both the Commonwealth & Asian Games in 1994 and also won bronze in the light flyweight (45-48kg) division.
  • Birju Sah, though once ranked seventh in the world rankings, struggled to make ends meet after his retirement. He worked as a security guard in the Tatanagar area in Jamshedpur but stayed connected with his sport by coaching underprivileged kids from nearby areas for free.

International Literacy Day

  • International Literacy Day recognised by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is observed on September 8, every year. Since 1967, this day has been observed to remind the world about the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity, and human rights and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.
  • The concept of International Literacy Day emerged at the World Conference of Ministers of Education held in Tehran in 1965. To address the global problem of illiteracy, on 26 October 1966, UNESCO declared September 8 as International Literacy Day.
  • The theme for International Literacy Day 2022 was 'Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces'.

World Physical Therapy Day

  • World Physical Therapy Day is observed globally on September 8 every year in order to raise awareness about the contribution of physiotherapists in healthcare and encourage people to be physically active and ensure good overall health. Every year a different theme is followed to generate awareness of the topic, and the theme for World Physical Therapy Day 2022 was 'Osteoarthritis'.
  • World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) founded World Physical Therapy Day on 8 September, 1996. This is the same day on which WCPT was founded in 1951.

IISc Bangalore Students Declared Winners of James Dyson Award (National Category)

  • Two engineering students from the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore were announced as the national winners of the James Dyson Award for the year 2022. They innovated 'EpiSHOT' — a single hand-operated autoinjector to deliver emergency medicine intramuscularly or subcutaneously to treat life-threatening situations like anaphylaxis (or allergic reaction) with the provision for reloading and sterilisation for reuse within two minutes of first use.
  • Arjun and Krishnan would receive prize money of approximately Rs. 4.6 lakh and would get to represent India in the international round where the final winners will be picked up by Sir James Dyson himself. The international shortlist would be announced on October 12, and the international winners on November 16.

Rajasthan Launches 100-day Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme

  • The Rajasthan government launched an ambitious scheme to provide 100 days of employment to needy families in urban areas on the lines of rural employment guarantee scheme MGNREGA.
  • More than 2.25 lakh families have already registered for the Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Scheme which was proposed by chief minister Ashok Gehlot in the state budget this year.
  • The scheme launched covers works like environment protection, water and heritage conservation, garden maintenance, and removing encroachments, illegal sign boards, hoardings, banners etc.
  • Sanitation, cleanliness and other such works will also be undertaken under the scheme.
  • People from the age group of 18 to 60 are eligible for the scheme.

Economist Bibek Debroy Appointed Chancellor of Pune's Deccan College

  • Economist and author Bibek Debroy was appointed as the Chancellor of Pune's Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute.
  • Debroy, who is presently the chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), would succeed well-known archaeologist A. P. Jamkhedkar.
  • Debroy's career took off from Kolkata's Presidency College and spanned across the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and United Nations Development Program on legal reforms at the Ministry of Finance.
  • He has been associated with the National Council of Applied Economic Research and Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies and Centre for Policy Research.

Warangal in Telangana, Thrissur and Nilambur in Kerala join UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC)

  • Warangal, Thrissur and Nilambur joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) in recognition of their outstanding efforts to make lifelong learning a reality for all at the local level.
  • Warangal in Telangana, Thrissur and Nilambur in Kerala are among the 77 cities from 44 countries which joined this network of the world body.
  • UNESCO GNLC is an international network consisting of cities that successfully promote lifelong learning across their communities.
  • It includes 294 cities from all around the world that share inspiration, know-how and best practice among each other.

NMC Allows Ukraine Returned Indian Students to Complete Education in other Countries

  • The National Medical Commission, NMC, issued a notice stating that it would agree to consider the academic mobility programme which is being offered by Ukraine that would allow war-torn Ukraine Indian students to complete their education by allowing them to be relocated to universities in other countries.
  • Under the academic mobility programme offered by Ukraine, these students would be able to complete their education and the degree would be awarded by the parent Ukrainian university only.

Women Reservation Bill: Petition Filed in Supreme Court Seeking Reintroduction of Bill

  • Supreme Court received a petition seeking reintroduction of Women's Reservation Bill which will provide 33 percent reservation for the women in the parliament and State legislatures.
  • A bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice J.K. Maheshwari said that it is a pertinent matter and has ordered the petitioner to serve a copy of the same to the Central government. The bench also posted the case for further consideration.
  • The Women's reservation bill also known as the One Hundred & Eighth Amendment Bill, 2008 contemplated reservation of 33% seats in the Lok Sabha and all State Legislative Assemblies for women.
  • The petition was filed before the Apex Court by the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) through advocate Prashant Bhushan stating that the action by the respondent in not placing the beneficial legislation before the Lok Sabha.

'Paperless' Constitution Bench to Hear Delhi Govt. vs Centre Case

  • It will be a paperless Constitution Bench hearing of the tussle between Delhi Government and the Centre for control over bureaucracy in the national capital.
  • A five-judge Constitution Bench led by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, which took up the matter, said that it would be a "Green Bench" using no paper files during the hearing. IT staffs of the top court were ready to train senior lawyers to enable them to function in a paperless manner.
  • The Bench – which also included Justice MR Shah, Justice Krishna Murari, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice PS Narasimha—tentatively agreed to commence hearing from October 11 even as it said it will fix the timeline for hearing on September 27.
