One of the World's Most Twisted Towers, 180-Metre-Tall 'Dance of Light', Unveiled in China

  • One of the world's most twisted towers was unveiled in Chongqing, a megacity in western China. The 180-metre-tall 'Dance of Light' skyscraper has been inspired by northern lights, according to architectural company Aedas, which designed it. The tower, situated on Xingfu Plaza in Chongqing's Jiangbei district, features two double-curved sides that give the sense that the structure is twisting.
  • The Dance of Light tower, designed by architecture firm Aedas is 590 feet tall and features a twisted facade that emulates the shape of northern lights.
  • The unique 39-story building is meant to serve as a landmark in the business district, where each structure has been inspired by stars and other celestial phenomena.

Liz Truss Britain's Next PM, Defeats Indian-origin Rishi Sunak

  • Liz Truss was named leader of the governing Conservative Party and Britain's next Prime Minister, taking power at a time when the country faces a cost of living crisis, industrial unrest and a recession.
  • Truss was declared the winner of the Conservative Party leadership election with 81,326 votes, defeating Rishi Sunak, who received 60,399 votes.
  • Long the front-runner in the race to replace Johnson, Truss became the Conservatives' fourth prime minister since a 2015 election. Over that period the country has been buffeted from crisis to crisis, and now faces what is forecast to be a long recession triggered by sky-rocketing inflation which hit 10.1 per cent in July.
  • Truss is set to become Britain's 56th Prime Minister and the third woman to hold the position. She will travel to Balmoral Castle, Scotland where she will be invited by Queen Elizabeth II to form a new government.

Priti Patel Resigns as UK Home Secretary

  • UK Home Secretary Priti Patel resigned from the Cabinet in a letter to the outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson and said that she plans to support his successor Liz Truss from the backbenches of Parliament.
  • The Indian-origin senior minister, a close ally of Johnson, was widely expected not to be included in the top line-up of Prime Minister elect Truss' top team.

New Species of Pearl Oyster Discovered

  • Marine biologists described a new species of the oyster genus Pinctada from the east coast of Phuket Island, Thailand, in the Andaman Sea.
  • Pinctada is a genus of saltwater oysters in the bivalve mollusk family Pteriidae.
  • There are approximately 20 scientifically recognized Pinctada species.
  • They are widely distributed from shallow to deep waters of the tropical and subtropical regions between the Indo-Pacific and western Atlantic.
  • They are not closely related to either the edible oysters or the freshwater pearl mussels.
  • Several Pinctada species produce the pearls of jewellery quality that seem to have sustained from ancient times the human definition of beauty and rarity.

Zimbabwe Moves 2,500 Wild Animals because of Climate Change

  • Zimbabwe began moving more than 2,500 wild animals from a southern reserve to one in the country's north to rescue them from drought, as the ravages of climate change replace poaching as the biggest threat to wildlife.
  • About 400 elephants, 2,000 impalas, 70 giraffes, 50 buffaloes, 50 wildebeest, 50 zebras, 50 elands, 10 lions and a pack of 10 wild dogs are among the animals being moved from Zimbabwe's Save Valley Conservancy to three conservancies in the north — Sapi, Matusadonha and Chizarira — in one of southern Africa's biggest live animal capture and translocation exercises.
  • Project Rewild Zambezi," as the operation is called, is moving the animals to an area in the Zambezi River valley to rebuild the wildlife populations there.

Binesh Kumar Tyagi Takes over as CMD Shipping Corporation of India

  • Binesh Kumar Tyagi took over as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Shipping Corporation of India.
  • Tyagi was heading the Liner and Passenger Services Division as Director (L&PS) since January 7, 2021 in the company.
  • Tyagi joined SCI in 1990 as Trainee Nautical Officer (TNOC). He served onboard various ships, in different ranks, including as Master.
  • In 2004, he was absorbed ashore, wherein he served at various management level positions and performed technical, vetting, chartering, training, marine HR, liner, passenger, inland waterways, offshore, among others.

Tata Motors Rolls Out India's First CNG-powered Truck in M&HCV Segment

  • Tata Motors launched the country's first CNG truck in the medium and heavy commercial (M&HCV) vehicle segment in the 28- and 19-tonne nodes.
  • Most truck makers, including Tata Motors, currently offer CNG only in the small and light commercial vehicle segments. The company also launched a fleet of seven trucks in the intermediary and light commercial vehicle (I&LCV) segment, meant for varied applications.
  • With the launch of the new advanced trucks that boast a host of features, including the new-age Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), Tata Motors is hoping to create strong differentiation and recoup some market share it has had lost.

Krishnan Sankarasubramaniam Takes over as Tamilnad Mercantile Bank MD & CEO

  • Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Ltd said that veteran banker Krishnan Sankarasubramaniam took over as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect.
  • Sankarasubramaniam succeeded K. V. Rama Moorthy and his term would be for a period of three years, which was approved by the Reserve Bank of India.
  • Prior to taking up the new role, Sankarasubramaniam was serving Punjab and Sind Bank as its Managing Director and CEO.

India to Develop Reusable Rockets for the World: ISRO Chairman

  • India plans to develop reusable rockets for the world, government officials informed. The agency will design and build new reusable rockets for the global markets in order to cut the cost of launching satellites.
  • The agency chief while addressing the seventh 'Bengaluru Space Expo 2022' noted that currently, it takes $10,000 to $ 15000 to put a one-kg payload into orbit. "We have to bring it down to USD 5,000 or even USD 1,000 per kg. The only way to do that is to make the rocket reusable. Today in India we don't have reusable technology yet in launch vehicles (rockets)," he said.

Anishka Biyani Wins Gold in Malaysian Age Group Rapid Chess Championship

  • Six-year-old Anishka Biyani won the gold medal in the Malaysian Age Group Rapid Chess Championship at Kuala Lumpur.
  • Anishka, a first-grade student of Dhirubhai Ambani School, achieved the feat in the under-6 open category with an impressive score of four points out of a possible six to clinch the title in the girls' category.
  • Participants from as many as eight countries took part in the competition. Earlier this year, Anishka had also qualified as one of the best under-7 players in the All India FIDE rating chess tournament held in Yousufguda, Hyderabad.

HM Amit Shah Launches Mascot & Anthem for 36th National Games in Ahmedabad

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the mascot and the anthem for the 36th National Games at Trans Stadia in Ahmedabad. The mascot is named 'Savaj' which means cub in Gujarati. The anthem for the national games is based on the theme of 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat'. The National Games are going to be organized from 29th September 2022 to 12th October 2022. It will be played in six cities of Gujarat including, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar.
  • The Government of India has left no stone unturned to promote sports and sports persons in India. The budget allocated for the National Games 2014 was 866 crores, this year, the allocated budget for National Games 2022, it is increased to two thousand crores. Home Minister Amit Shah also launched the official website and mobile app of the National Games Gujarat at the raiser ceremony.

  • Leh is all set to host the first-ever Mountain Bicycle, MTB, World Cup- the 'UCI MTB Eliminator World Cup in India. The 'UCI MTB Eliminator World Cup' will be organized in collaboration with the Administration of Union Territory of Ladakh and the Cycling Association of India. The Ladakh leg of the Eliminator World Cup is part of ten professional race series held in various cities across the world.
  • UCI MTB Eliminator World Cup is going to be a short track race with Cross Country Eliminator, XCE, the format of five hundred meters with natural and artificial obstacles. In this upcoming event, a total of 20 international, 55 national, and local cyclists are going to participate. Since the UCI MTB Eliminator World Cup is going to be held for the first time in India, all cyclists are excited about the event.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Wins Majority Test

  • Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren won the trust vote amid a threat of disqualification in an office of profit case.
  • Soren got 48 votes, while the BJP walked out during the House proceedings.
  • He claimed that the BJP was attempting to poach UPA MLAs, which prompted him to take the step of tabling a confidence motion in the Jharkhand Assembly.
  • The Chief Minister lambasted the BJP for creating uncertainty in the state.
  • Soren's government is running with the support of Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal.

GoI Announces to Rename the Rajpath as Kartavya Path

  • The government of India announced to change the name of Rajpath and Central Vista lawns into Kartavya Path. The decision is said to shed remnants of the British colony in India. The decision came after a special meeting, convened with the aim of renaming the Rajpath and Central Vista lawns. Earlier, the Modi government had changed the name of the road on which the Prime Minister's residence is, from Race Course Road to Lok Kalyan Marg.
  • Kartavya Path includes the entire avenue and area from the Netaji Statue to the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The route runs from Rashtrapati Bhavan on Raisina Hill through Vijay Chowk and India Gate to National Stadium in Delhi. The decision comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation on Independence Day where he stressed the factors leading to the abolition of symbols and signs relating to the colonial mindset.

Chhattisgarh's First Ethanol Plant to Come up in Kabirdham District

  • Chhattisgarh's first ethanol plant will be constructed near Bhoramdev Cooperative Sugar Factory in Kabirdham district. The district administration has identified 35 acres of vacant land adjacent to the factory for setting up the plant.
  • Implementation of the project was accelerated after Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said he would include the agriculture-based ethanol plant as one of the priority schemes of his government. The plant will have a capacity of 80 kilo litres per day (KLPD).
  • The Chhattisgarh government has decided to involve private players for financial and technical participation in the project to strengthen the state's economy. The state's first ethanol plant will be set up under the public-private-partnership (PPP) model.

  • President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari conferred the Honorary Rank of General of the Nepal Army to Gen. Manoj Pande, chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army.
  • The President at the Shital Niwas, the official residence of Bhandari, conferred the honorary rank -- a long tradition of exchange of visits by the army chiefs of Nepal and India and conferring the title of honorary General to both the army chiefs -- during a special ceremony in Kathmandu.
  • The tradition started in 1950. India also confers the honorary rank of "General of Indian Army" to the Nepal Army Chief.

Court Cannot Become a Tool for the Petitioner's Resume: Delhi High Court

  • The Delhi High Court has come up very badly on a frivolous petition filed by a law student, seeking compensation for detrimental effects of air pollution on his health.
  • The petition was heard by a single-judge bench of Justice Yashwant Varma who not only rejected the plea but also said that court is a serious place which cannot become a tool for the petitioner's resume or CV.
  • The petitioner had moved to the Court for seeking compensation of Rs. 15 lakh and health insurance of Rs. 25 lakh.
  • In its findings, Court noted that no evidence or medical report was found, which could clarify the claims made.The Court noted that there was no medical proof to show any personal injury to the petitioner and the plea is misconceived.
